*A complete & concise drum lesson on Bonham drum kit-played triplets (proper Bonham sequence LEFT-RIGHT-KICK). Please also see: • JOHN BONHAM TRIPLETS *... for great exercises to perfect this pattern. *Also, I have over 140 John Bonham/LZ Drum Lessons and Infovids on my channel at / bonzoleum .
**This video is the "how to" for the basic, yet all-important, tom-toms/bassdrum combo triplet riff made very popular by John Bonham.
I have a few videos on "Bonham triplets" posted, but I feel this is the most complete and comprehensive of the Bonham Triplet tutorials from a learning/fundamental standpoint.
I have included in the video a link to another 'Triplet Video' I recently made, where I explain my 'isolating the corners' concept.

Wife starts vacuuming as soon as the drums come out. Classic.
hahaha
i guess I am kinda randomly asking but does anybody know a good site to stream newly released tv shows online?
@Kamari Leland i would suggest Flixzone. You can find it on google :)
@Wallace Julian Definitely, been watching on Flixzone for since march myself =)
@Wallace Julian thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I appreciate it!!
This is the vid I learned this from about two years ago. I've just now got it to where I can play it in public. This lesson really stuck with me.
Thanks
I'm a guitarist but my heart's always been hooked on Bonham's drumming aesthetic. This is a great video. You rock.
Great job ! Love your videos ! Thank you !
i was taught in the 70 s by a man named mike gerardi in schenectady new york and he used to teach the same exact way he was a jazz drummer....emphases on the swing.Keep up the wonderful instruction......brought tears to my eyes.
It's like learning drums from Ray Liota
Don't "yeah, yeah" me, Lois! This is important.
bonzoleum Brilliant film!
He does look like Ray Liotta. LOL
@@ryanwalters2789 WHOSE < RAY LIOTTA LOL > ???????
haha!
Pretty sure this was the video I stumbled upon a few years ago that finally made sense of these triplets, love this guy very kool dude thank you.
+Ryan Chappell Thanks Ryan! TK
I’m 55, and never knew the way to do this.. til now. Great explanation. Thank you man!! 👍🏼
I'm glad it helped IPC417!
At last someone makes it clear and goes over it, this guy is brilliant.
Absolutely love this guy's teaching style. It's like getting drum lessons from Columbo
I have a tendency to start my triplet with my foot, if you can believe that. Your videos are awesome & I plan to watch all of them. You are a great teacher which are hard to find.
Thank you, Steve!
+steve kuhlman I do this too. If you want to try and mix it up, play the kick on the last upbeat instead of the downbeat and you'll end up getting the timing of starting with your snare or whatever
I believe that starting on the bass drum is the only effective way to incorporate a triplet into a fill... bass, right, left!
steve kuhlman Me Too
steve kuhlman I find that if you’re doing a quick fill, it’s easier to start with the bass drum. However, in a solo, the optimal sound and also the best way to keep it going is starting with the hands
I love this guy. He takes a great deal of time to explain things, and make sure that you can really understand him. I realize some people are just having fun making funny comments, and that's cool. But you snarky bastards...... quit yer bitchin'. Go find something that makes you happy. Life is too short to waste by going to people's posts and pissing on them. Unless perhaps you can do it better? ;-)
Who loves ya, baby?
+bonzoleum we do, big daddy
Well said!!! I've learned so much from this man.
I couldn't agree more. Anyone who takes time out to share knowledge, and maybe help others in some way is cool in my book. To hell with the sarky and negative b......s!
First Video that I've seen that really explains it. Awesome teaching!!!!
Quit hating. This guy is rad. Very helpful video!! Thank you!!!
His enthusiasm is so infectious. Thank you for your uploads and your time :-)
I only have one question! How in the hell did 92 people find this a thumbs down? I guess it must be those that just give up..... *candyasses* (good word ) I found it to be very useful and informative. SUBBED
You are awesome bud. I love how you don’t try to tidy up the basement and it looks like you are busy and just stumble upon a podcast and crawl in.
I stopped in the middle of the video and ordered the book on Amazon. Can't wait to get it!
It took me a second watch to understand everything you said in this video, but it was worth it.
I dont ever comment on stuff but I just really wanted to say that this is the type of drum instruction ive been looking for. your video on the bonham triplets (which i didnt know that other people called them that) was a huge help. Ive been trying to get those down for what seems like forever now. Im like 80% percent of drummers (leading with my right, as i am right handed). Ive tried it leading with my left and i think its sounds more authentic but it feels so weird.
like this guy very helpful, negative comments don't help,
john milton Thanks John!
The technical break down at the end was terrific. I liked how you broke it down in to all the different combinations of 2 beats before weaving everything together into 3. Thank you for sharing.
I found doing the triplets with the kick so difficult. I tried your "Isolating The Corners" technique and it is working miracles in a very short time. It even allowed me to lead with the left hand which is against my normal wiring. Terry, I think that is genius, it really is amazing the way that it works. It just takes a little patience and the speed increases. I have always found it easier to count triplets as 1 Ba Da, 2 Ba Da, 3 Ba Da but never used the kick in the mix. Thanks a million for that technique.
John Repp Thanks John! I appreciate the very nice words!
bonzoleum, I find myself returning to your videos because your very discriptive throughout your lessons. Nice! Thanks for your effort.
First let me say i am no drummer but i am a musician. Your energy is wonderful and the tuts are great. Your comments about click tracks have made me rethink my recording techniques. It is very easy to get hooked into "click-o-mation ",software amps etc. At 65 years young i forgot those days man!..thanks again
My "triplet" heroes, outside of jazz are Benny Benjamin (Motown) and Earl Young (Philly).
your drum lessons on bonham technique are great...i have been haunted by this one pattern...have never been able to do.....i'm starting to learn it by using your guidance. working at about 140 bpm now and can't get faster...just takes time. thanks!!!!
Bonham triplets are hard to do. It takes a lot of practice to be able to do them fast, and evenly. By evenly I mean time wise, and dynamically. This is the only video I’ve found that gives great exercises to develop this beat. Great job.
this is the first video that made the gears click inside my head and helped me become a better drummer. thank you for taking the time to make these videos
Thank you Dads!!!
I just want to thank You for sharing the Jon Bonham Triplet excercise,I would have never imagined it wit speed....the Train groove& finding out which hand to start with ended years of research!!! Thanks so much, regards,Roger.
This is absolutely THE MOST helpful triplet lesson I've found on youtube, and I've seen all of them. On top of that, you do the triplet with the LEFT hand lead as did Bonham. All of your other Bonham videos are excellent too! Thank you thank you!!!!
Great vid. I've only watched two of yours so far, but both had a vacuum cleaner start up. Your house must be the cleanest ever!
those red drums look awesome.
thanks, this is useful to beginners
Being a bit of a drummer myself,I really appreciate his lessons. I like how he explains virtually every detail. Thnx!
Absolutely something I will use. Thanks so much for breaking this down...got on my kit at the ten minute mark and came back to finish the video with a huge grin!
Thanks Bonzoleum. Couldn't drum the triplet and this vid was just avoided cos it was a challege to high to clim, Christmas just gone gave me loads of time and think iv now cracked it. Your advice that British drummers start with left hand was amazing to learn, it's now opened up lots of other oppertuneties starting with left hand. Thank you
You’re very welcome Billy, and thank you!
Always fascinated to learn something new (I lead right handed and I didn’t know that 15 minutes ago) thanks man, fills a hole in my head
"So that's what I've been doing!" Explained concisely. "Train beat" sycopation. I learned, and I remember the moment - "Ramble on" was it. I had to do that. Try that lesson. Also, "We're gonna groove". Irresistible left foot included! Keep it up!
I like your demeanor on this video. Too many guys are totally full of themselves. You present your self as one of my buddies trying to share something cool. I enjoyed watching your video very much. If you don't mind an opinion though... what's weird to me about your theory on which hand to start on, is that the shuffle or train beat is different than the triplets as follows - if you lead with the left hand on the train, the down beat is on the right hand. With the triplet, if you lead with the left hand, the left hand is on the down beat. So, in effect, they would be the opposite of each other. This is not necessarily a bad thing though. I believe that everything you do right handed you should also be able to do left handed. If you can master everything both lefty and righty, you become an incredibly versatile player.
This is a great video to really master from. I’ve been playing drums for over 40 years. Easily explained.
Great vid and instructions. Triplets are something I've always struggled with and I think your left hand vs. right hand explanation - something so rudimentary, yet I never thought about it - may help me master this technique. Thanks!
Wish I'd had a drum teacher like you back in the day - well , you're here now and we must be close in age cuz every vid so far has covered most all my favorite drummers - Thanks , great job and you gotta Brother in Detroit now !!
Man..i'm a guitarist but you're a great teacher...I WANT SOME DRUMS !!!
Great lesson. Great depth, conversational, and the message is repeated oft enough to truly sink in. Thanks bonzoleum!
Great energy, enthusiasm, and knowledge...bonzoleum, you are the 'Goodfella' of drumming, sir!
I love discovering videos you madenin the past, today! Love watching a new Bonzoleum video!!!
Ah yes, Brent-there are jillions of them. Thanks for being a fan!
As always a great job....many drummers wanting to learrn more skills I know will appreciate your lessons...thanks so much for taking the time to put these together !
Dude.... Thank you so much for this video. I have always loved triplets, but I suck at playing them. This really opened doors for me that have probably been there all along,I just wasn't really looking. Thanks again... Now to find out which is my leading hand........
Learned to do the triplet thing around the standard drum kit leading with my left from listening to Mitch Mitchell moreso than John Bonham however. Listening to Hey Joe you can hear Mitch use this pattern slowed way down and you can tell he's leading with the left to get the descending riff and they way he does it and tunes his kit is instructive and amazing! Thanks for the great lesson Bonzoleum!
"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.."
Love the delivery.....many are overly systematic, you made it as plain Jane as it truly is!!
I love your videos! You are a natural teacher. Thank you!
Your're a great teacher and drummer, greeting from Colombia. :)
Wish i had a drum tutor like you. you explain your lessons very well. Cheers!!
I am now more enthused to persist in getting this damn triplet frustration sorted. Best instructional video I've seen. You are a natural at this, as most online teachers make you just want to throw away the sticks and take up knitting...
My actual drama is that I am ambidextrous and both hands want to dominate... very messy...
Thanks again though...
Thanks bonzoleum for posting all your easy to follow instructional videos! Very helpful !!
Very good training method, i'm left handed so it was easy to do triple tom tom kick , now need to improve the other lead right!!!
If you think about it, this type of music (hard rock drumming) is what paved the way for metal drumming
I found your videos when I was looking for a good tutorial on "Rock and Roll" and now I'm a fan and a long distance student.
ssgdean1969 Thank you!
I've been drumming for yrs & yrs but I still appreciate your approach from the ground up... I still havn't perfected my triplets. This clip is great - time to pull those drums back out of the closet... tim
you remind me of like a Jack La Lane type of teaching-you make it very easy to follow-thank you sir please share more.
you are into my top five drum's teacher of youtube.... thank you very much :-)
I acctually really like this guy he's definantly my favorite drummer on UA-cam
great drum instructor
Great videos im a huge bonzo fan and i am learning so much from these videos been playing for many years and at 45 i have been really trying to get the bonzo beats down thanks again for sharing about one of the greatest drummers ever
Thank you very much 😊 you explain how to play triplets the best way 👍😊👍
"Good drummers must think when they practice, but remember when they play." That is the way of practice!!
Very helpful !! I have tried for years to duplicate Bonzo's triplets but never had it explained by starting the fill before the initial down beat. I am right handed and always have started with the right. You are correct, it is very difficult to lead off with the left. But treating the left as prior to the down beat helps get the groove going..
Oh wow bongo, you getting some hits here. Grats
dude u r like the freaking awesomest drum teacher ever
I’d love to have just one drum lesson from you. That would be a dream come true
Really useful . Many thanks . Subbed from Scotland!!
Thanks again Bonzo :-) from the Drummer from Down Under
Good stuff man. Thanks for sharing your personal findings and encouraging individual style. Dig your drumming.
Thanks, Lou!
Thank you thank you thank you! The train beat and the break down of the thee parts and it's just clicked for me. I've been try to get fast leading with my right hand because I'm right handed. But using your theory about the train shuffle I discovered I can do it easier leading with the left.
Hey bonzoleum, I've been playing drums for many yrs as I'm sure you have and also just love triplets. I think triplets and paradiddles are my two favorite rudiments. I also teach my students to play all rudiments leading with either hand. Or, hand foot combo's. It really opens up yr drumming skills. Anyway, really enjoyed your video; keep up the solid work my friend!
Thanks a lot for the help I was stuck on this for a while
Funny last joke, thanks for your videos, have been really helpful so far, greetings from Chile
Awesome,watching from Australia.
The train beat connection was fantastic. I lead with my left on that, and I never even realized it. I think once I connect the train beat to the foot, I'll be super smooth with my triplets. Thanks for a great lesson!
Amen
Thank you for defining the rythyms.excellent
I'm not a drummer.. at best I'm a recreational guitar wanna be experimenter. I spent enough time in high school band to follow your video, and it was actually entertaining and I feel very informative, even not as a drummer. I enjoyed your video, I feel it is a useful video, and I very much hope it inspires others to pursue music
on a side note, my time in high school band was as a trumpet player... I love playing brass, it has such strong roots in jazz, but no musical style can survive without a percussion section to keep time.
I really like your videos! Been playing for about 30 years and spent MANY hours learning this Bonham stuff. You do a great job breaking it down. I noticed a funny thing with my playing based on your observations. I do the train beat the same as you, but have a hard time leading triplets with my left hand. Weird.
Im a big fan of your videos. I found the train beat analogy really helpful getting the accent in the right place and how to place it in time in a song. Yay Bonzoleum!!
Thanks BBB!
Thanks Andrew! I've never met or communicated with him, though it would be great. He's a great guy and fine drummer.
I wish that I had learned this when I was sixteen. Back then(1975), in the sleepy L.I. town of E. Setauket there was only one drum teacher of any repute, who you had to treat with 'kid' gloves if he was going to consider giving you lessons. It took many years to realize that he was only interested in students who came from wealthy families and prodigies(who you didn't have to teach anyway). It's okay, I'm learning and the sound is amazing!! Left perception is 'alien' if you're not a born lefty.
Very Informative video!! ( I'm not a drummer, I'm a guitar player! but I enjoyed your video lesson!! )
thank you !! i watched yours video 3year ago !
today I did it.
Terrific! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
this is a great video bonzoeum
Great tips...I will follow them!!! (From Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
Good stuff. Thanks for the lesson. Still trying to get to Buddy Rich speed but this helps.
Growing up in the 50's really sucked for musicians. We didn't have the equipment in those days. Drums were way to expensive for the average family I along with Anton Figg (Dave Letterman's Drummer) and many others started playing with pads. YUK.
This video will knock your socks off; it surprised the hell out of me and it shows just how much cooler it is to be a drummer nowadays.
The video is: Good Times, Bad Times - Led Zep (Drum cover) by Alexey.
Unless I'm missing something Alexey is the ripe old age of what? 7? 9? Amazing what the kids of today can do. She's already better than 90% of the drummers that were in their teens and 20's when I was growing up.
You sir are a great drum teacher! I enjoyed the video very much. I don't hear an accent in your voice like the others, might be because I was born in Hammond, right next door. lol, I get that where I live too.
You're great man. I really enjoy your teaching and comedy
Thank you, Spencer!
cool, thanks for the free tips.....my playing has improved in just a few days
Actually, this guy understands the concept of teaching to a much greater extent that most "teachers" today. Being sound with communication doesn't make you a good educator.
I´m right handed playing on a right handed kit and I lead with my left hand. This causes problems when doing a fast fill and ending it on a cymbal on the right side of the kit. My solution for about 20 years has been to do a "double-tap" on the last stroke with the left hand. I´m trying to correct this and practice leading with the right hand. Love your videos!
Hey toots, you,ll always be a star..on drums and in life
Makes me think maybe I'm obsessed with getting rid of sympathetic snare buzz. Listening to someone else's kit without all the fancy recording equipment is refreshing.
Happy New Year, Ben!
Very Very helpful, thanks.I'm a lefty,i set up left, have a hard time leading triplet starting w right hand,so thanks man.
Great lesson, thank you
