  • Psych2Go started the channel with the intention of making psychology more accessible for everyone through short animations and skits. However, we also recognize that sometimes we want advice and strategies to help improve our own lives or those around us. Hence, we put together a video on how to help someone with depression. In it, we share our own personal experience with it and some ways we can help those around us who have depression.

    My grandma almost always hugs me in the morning when I wake up. I usually wake up early but always stay in bed for a couple of hours, and she knows at what time I'm already awake. So she peeks inside my room to check if I am indeed awake and then proceeds to jump on my bed.

      Well listening and trying to understand what they are going through and not asking to many questions as this could feel like your trying to interrogate them and checking up on them and most important be there for them no matter what and if it gets to much to handle have them call a suicide hotline like the Trevor project if they are a youth and identify as LGBTQ and the live in the us I believe they service Canada as well

    To the supporters be kind also to yourself. People with mental health issue very often only see their own needs, it can be part of the illness. So being kind to them and supporting them as much as is possible but also take care of yourself.

    The worst for me is the feeling of emptiness. I was feeling mentally bad since something around 3 years now and I didn't even bother to think about it, because I had to go forward, to catch up with others, but 1,5 year ago it hit me so badly. The whole world suddenly lost its colors. I was alone and nobody could see that something was wrong with me. I finally started to care. I did my research and found out I could have depression. I was reading a lot about it, but just reading. I didn't do anything to stop it. Some time ago I finally decided and asked someone as anonymous how can I go and ask for help. Before that, I was so sure I need help, but... when I finally got my answer... I started to doubt myself. I am still not sure if I need help, if my problem is even worth help, but the worst part is that for me world seems so... distance? I can only feel emptiness and it scares me.

    I have a 28 year old son who suffers from depression. I try to offer him help with anything when I see he is becoming overwhelmed. I will complement and celebrate his accomplishments in college. I let him know that he has so much more potential than he realizes. He is up to taking three courses and this semester he has an A+ average after being a C student in high school. Deans list three semesters in a row. Try to help in relieving stressful situations.

    So much confirmation! I'm doing all of the above... just feels natural since I suffered with Depression for years and I had to do all these things for myself to get myself out of it... I am grateful for the support of my husband, children, parents, extended family and friends who also did these things for me from time to time. I am so much better and now able to help others way more!! This list is legit!!

    My mum has depression, and keeps thinking of suicide. My dad has Parkinson's, so in about ten years he'll be drooling in a wheelchair. My siblings and I will all have moved out by then, so my mum sees her future as bleak and lonely, and I don't know how to reassure her or to make this better. She overworks herself, and gets depressed at the state of our house when she comes home late at night and feels like no one talks to her or appreciates the work she does for us. I just want her to be happy and feel appreciated and loved, but I don't know how. Any advice anyone? 😢

      Donny Kruft-Welton try casually, everyday including her in your future. Like often make an offhanded comment
      maybe express how much you mean to her by: helping out, making sure everything's tidy, etc.

    I have a friend from Junior High who i've been coming back into contact with this past year, and she has suffered so much bullying and harassment and all of this stuff, and I often find it really exhausting to be her friend. Every other night I have to talk her through her depressive episode and let her know I care. She constantly contemplates suicide and let's her past harassers get to her in spite of being cut from her life. I do my best of course, I try to balance out her negativity with positive reinforcement, but it's definitely difficult. The biggest challenge is how naturally reluctant she is to help herself. Every time I suggest she gets more sleep or get something healthy to eat or do something constructive she always stands stagnantly defiant of anything I'm suggesting. I understand that sleep is especially difficult because often times their depression just keeps them wide awake at night but (and I apologize for how ignorant this may sound) I seriously think she'd be a lot better off adjusting her sleep cycle to go to bed earlier, because her depressive episodes almost always happen late at night. That said, I'm not sure what the state of her environment looks like in terms of cleanliness and I've also never fixed her up a healthy meal before (mostly because . . .and I'm embarrassed to say . . . I don't know how to cook). But maybe I should try bettering myself before bettering her, since I don't exactly practice what I preach.

    Thank you for the video. I've watched a few video about depression and it's the very first time I watch one talking about what I experienced when I had one. I didn't have any friend back then, my parent couldn't help me because they had their problem on their own, but my sister was there and since then she has always been. Sometimes I wonder if we would have become close like we are now if it didn't happen. So this experience makes me smile now.
    I still am very negative about everything, especially myself and there are still some points I still do. I almost got back to the state I was in, dropping school again. But I fought it, knowing what I was about to do and eventually, ended college and got my diploma. So I think there is hope and I'll try to do my best.
    Also your voice was very soothing to hear and I think the advice were great !

      I couldn't find any way to contact you via UA-cam PM so I'll just answer here. I'm sorry you've got to face this. I'm glad that, you ended up here in your situation though, because it means you're looking for an answer, some help to get better, it's really important. So you're on the right path, keep going !
      As for your family, maybe they think it's too big for them and they can't handle that because they don't know what's oppressing you, that's why they think you need professional help. You can still try to talk to them if you think they can help you, talking about something you might not be sure to understand, or explain what you understood about yourself to them.
      If you can't you can try to send a message on Psych2Go Facebook group, there are a lot of people here to help each other and you'll be more able to elaborate what's troubling you.
      If you care about being anonymous I'll suggest using the contact page of Psych2Go's Tumblr, you won't need to create an account and people using tumblr will help you, as well as the persons who manage the blog.
      A lot of people are in the same dark place. We can all help each other with our experiences, sharing our light and getting better together. You've done a great job so far, I hope you're proud of that.

    I can definetely agree with some of the things shown in here. I have had dyslexia for almost 2 years and I am on my way to get better, but I still remember how hard brushing my teeth was or that at times I just came home from school, did not do any homework and just threw myself into my bed with a bunch of junk food, watching videos on UA-cam and shutting down the lights. I was not exercising, I was not really educating or challenging myself, I basically wasn't doing anything. People with depression can also suffer from heavy mood swings. I remember that at times I felt like on top of society, while at other times I felt like society was on top of me. I often yelled at my parents and insulted them - the only people there for me - as I was convinced they weren't caring about me or making any effort to adjust to my depression. They also had a hard time coming to terms with my condition as theu never suffered from it and also didn't know anybody else who did. But now we've all been living through it together. Supporters are so important during these hard times. ♡

    I think I have depression but I'm normally the one trying to make my friends laugh even when I feel like s**t and I just want one of them to turn around, give me a hug and say that I matter and that they love me :) that never happens. And I'm now giving up.

    Hello, and thank you very much for this video. Right now one of my friends is going through depression, and I don't know what to do to help him.
    He hasn't eaten much for days, and I saw a side of him that I had never seen before. It scares me, and I want to be there for him for whatever he needs.
    A day after I found out, I had no clue where to start, how to help, how to act - and I figured that it would somehow be better if I tried to make him feel like everything was normal again, which was not the best way to deal with it, and I had no idea what to do when he told me the details of what happened.
    I'm researching ways to help now, and this has already been helpful. I've been with him every day, and he has opened up more and more. We've hugged, and I helped him clean his room and get out of the house as well.
    But... it's still not okay. I would want to talk in private to give details, and ask for advice, if you see this comment.

      Hey, really happy to hear that you are trying your best to be there for your friend. Have you consulted your parents or others about the issue and see how you can help?

    • @achieryph8897
      @achieryph8897 8 років тому +1

      +Psych2Go Yes, I have talked to his parents about it, and they have been grateful for me being there for him. They wanted to know whether he was self harming, and if he had said anything to me about it, and luckily he wasn't.
      But I find that when he opens up to me, I don't know what to say to comfort him, and there doesn't seem to be any way that I can help to solve the problem other than just be there for him. It has to do with his girlfriend leaving him for another guy, and it was really messy when it happened. But he still loves her, and he's mad at her at the same time, so I don't feel that I can say much about her because I will offend him or say something wrong.

    I dealt with it myself was lucky enough to find a way that worked with me:
    I decided that whenever I'd start thinking about sad moments or depressing things occurring or that have occurred, I decided to look more openly. I walk down the street and I make myself to notice things. I see that the sunrise peaks out and I am suddenly witnessing the start of a day just as other people could have had in the past, that leads to me thinking that any plants I walk past depend on that every day life to bloom or grow pretty - the amazement gets rid of depressing things.
    I sit on a train and see that a lady drops her change for the train ticket just as the train guard goes past - I call out and tell her that her left over coin is under her seat (or even go and get it for her) and give it to her -- this is a reaction I do without thinking about it anymore. Although this is classified as selfish because you get the smile or thanks of appreciation of the help, it stills make you think that if you had not been there in that exact moment the lady might not have found her coin to pain for her train ticket. This was the reason I got out of bed every morning after I experienced what caused me to be depressed. If I didn't get out that day, I imagine all the things and moment I would have missed = that magic trick you try to do with traffic lights, the sunrise the sundown, the people I met, the helpful gestures I saw from others during the day, the happiness the worrisome of others around me - the living of people and all in just one small part of the world.

    God heals me of my depression. It always happens, sometimes I stray a little far from him by getting caught up in the fleeting moments of this rough life, but when I really make a commitment to make room for Him again and again, He never fails me. Never. I don't stray and come back over and over because I'm an opportunist, not at all. I simply am human but deep down I always know that He is the answer to EVERYTHING and not just my problems. I almost burst out crying today because just a few hours ago, He healed me yet again in a way that only the people closest to me see, and I am forever grateful for His infinite love and infinite care for me: someone who doesn't deserve all that He has given me. God is love, and in my heart I KNOW I am living proof of His love and Mercy.

    Woaah:0 thank you so much!!! But what if they want to speak about their problem? I mean that if they thinking about that problem all day, but they really want to tell it somebody (for me :) ) so what should I do? Should I listen him always, or just try to take his thoughts to a better way (e.g. speak about how beautiful life is, or anything else) i hope you will understand what am i trying to explaining now :D

    • @Psych2go
      @Psych2go  8 років тому

      +zsofi22 If they want to speak about their problem, that's actually a good sign that they want to open up. At least hearing them out would help. But if you sense that they are complaining or just being down right pessimistic, then maybe you can try to convert/change the direction of the conversation to something more positive. Sometimes, people can get so stuck in their way of thinking.. that all it takes is a distraction. Do note that I'm not a professional though. Hope this helps!

  • @anieslll
    @anieslll 7 років тому +1

    sometimes going out to the nature can be depressing as well, because you see all the beauty and you cannot connect to it, you just know it is beautiful, but you don't feel it. you just look at it and you are depressed because you cannot feel any passion about it. same goes with loved ones trying to make you feel better, you just look at them and know what are they doing and why, but you cannot feel the emotions yourself. and that makes you more depressed again, because there is no love in you to give back, you cannot experience it in the moment and you see your loved one trying hard and pointlessly.. that's how it feels sometimes.

    I am currently in a relationship (kinda) where my girlfriend of nearly 3 years is back in a dark place. She had bad depression when she was younger and went to therapy. During our relationship she never really got too bad. and because I never saw how bad it could get I never truly understood it. I saw it as something that with time she would get over. I know better now. It kills me that i did not take it seriously from the beginning. We broke up a bout a month and a half ago. She said that she was like a light switch that constantly kept telling her to leave, and to stay. After 2 weeks she broke down and wanted me to come back. Of course I wanted to jump back in, and I personally have abandonment issues. So I pushed her to make it official on social media so that guys would stop texting her trying to flirt. She was then left hanging by her roommate after 3 weeks in their new house. So I told her maybe this is a sign that we can finally move in together and I can show you that I am ready to be an adult with you (Im 19). So she agreed and we live together happily for a month. I then got sick and she took care of me, with 36 hours of me getting better, she started acting distant and not giving me any affection. She told me that her head had so many thoughts and a relationship on top of everything right now is too much. She didn't kick me out, but I have so much love and affection that I needed to give to her that when she rejected it and told me to sleep on the couch, I broke down. repeatedly. I had a couple good days where I stayed strong, but it all came crashing down and I broke down. Thats when she said it was probably best if I go stay at my moms for a few days and give her space. So during that transition everything went from being "Our room' to "her room' and "our bed" to "her bed". Now I am trying to stay strong and be patient. I see that all I can do right now is support her, but the thought of losing her forever scares me and makes me panic. She hasn't changed our relationship status on facebook, but when she was happy she had told me that she was never going to leave again and I was the only one who truly understood her, and that my love was a blessing. So to have a complete flip of emotions really sucks and is straining my heart. I will do whatever it takes to make sure she gets healthy, but possibly losing her like this is killing me.

    Whenever she says that I just go speechless or say i love you itll be alright and etc.
    But really, what CAN I say?
