Thanks for the excellent video, the real world side by side comparisons are really good, the cave comparison is on point. Wondering if you shot everything in the cave just handheld and if you used the Gyro data to stabilise that footage? Would be really cool to see a video demonstrating hand held Gyro stabilised footage of the A7Siii vs the non-Gyro stabilised footage in a real life situation - e.g. walking up and down hills/mountain side, walking in the caves on uneven surfaces and maybe demonstrating how it looks when you do a hop (perhaps over a stream) as well. The Gyro data is really intriguing.
You're welcome! In the cave I used a tripod in the cave since I was running in and out a bunch and I wanted to keep things exactly in the same spot. I plan on doing a comparison video with gyro vs standard vs active stabilization soon! Cheers
Always appreciate that you're actually outside in the field talking to the camera and using it. The A7III is still one of the best hybrid camera's out there. Can't wait for the new version to come out!
The one thing I notice immediately is that the SIII has much better detail both in photo and video, and I think it's because of the lack of AA filter. When I moved from the original A7S mark I to the A7III, I noticed that my A7S had much better detail even though it was only 12mp. I find the A7III rather quite soft when you look at edges or high contrast scenes. I also notice the same thing with my old Fuji X-Pro1 which also has no AA filter, it has a much nicer/sharper look (though very bad dynamic range compared to the A7III. Still, the A7III is a great camera with a lot to offer but I do miss the details of the S series. Great video.
I don't find it wasteful but a good indication of where Sony is taking their cameras. I think the A7iv will have some nice improvements inherited from the A7sIII. Cheers
I was expecting raw footages to grade to see if I want to buy the camera..the only thing I don't like about the A7 series is that the slog-2 are complicated to grade..does 10 bit on the a7siii make it better than the 8 bit color on the a7iii to grade footage?

Agreed but it’s quite difficult with the UA-cam compression. However I will continue to put samples out there for people to download and see/test for themselves!
Great video. I'm new to Sony, so what's a good all-rounder first lens for the these two cameras? What lens did you use for the side-by-sides in the vid? Thanks.
Glad to hear it. Most all of these shots were filmed with the tamron 17-28 which is a great lens! For a great all rounder I’d look at the tamron 28-75 or the 17-28 depending on what kind of stuff you shoot. I have a video of the lenses I use and why here: ua-cam.com/video/eqVEIj_zPww/v-deo.html
Great video - thanks. I have an A7S3 and was wondering if it was worth getting the A73 for photos as I want to print around A3 size, ore do you think the A7S3 is going to be good enough. Mainly portrait photos? Cheers again
The A7sIII is good enough for A3 with no issues. if you want a higher megapixel camera for photo work (I do a bit as well) then I would recommend waiting to see what the A7iv has to offer later this year. Cheers!
Thank you for the comparison, I see that A7III still has some advantages over A7SIII. I just want the flipping screen though but I think I'll hold on to my A7III for now. Their shots are indistinguishable side by side.
They are very close very very close. I would wait for the a7iv which will probably come next year and will likely get some of the video features from the A7sIII. Cheers!
@@JakeSloan after I saw your video, I did a little search on that matter, and I realize the same thing on the other videos I saw with the same comparison. I believe that the fact that the a7iii is doing a downsample from a 6k sensor gives it a little detail advantage in 4K. But in fact I really like the “softer” look of the a7siii, more filmic maybe... great video by the way! New sub here :)
You're the best! Hope you reply to my comment too.. So detailed and so much to show, day time, cloudy, walking, driving, dark cave moments everything included! I've see you replied to every one of your comments, your the king! Maybe little advice to me? So if I'm beginner and don't wanna spend 10k on a gear + specific memory cards that cost 300-400$, lenses etc.. Would you recommend 7 lll to get started into videography and photography? I do have experience, just wanna step up more into intermediate level or better save up, spend some extra money and get the beast 7S lll?? Can't decide 7Slll, 7lll or 7c? Thanks!!:)
If you want to do mostly video work then I would recommend the a7c and some of the tamron lenses to start. if you want to do both video and photo work then get the a7III. You can see some of my favorite tamron lenses here: ua-cam.com/video/eqVEIj_zPww/v-deo.html and you can see a comparison of the a7c and a7iii here: ua-cam.com/video/HGP4Y6N4LdQ/v-deo.html Cheers
I have sony alpha37 but I want to upgrade for my traveling/landscape photography ( same vibe like this video ) and at first I was thinking about a6600 vs. a7III but now I am also considering a7C , a7rIII or a7sIII. I thought the decision is simple but I'm getting more and more confused 😱 please, help :(
In conclusion : the A7III has a fabulous price/performance ratio compared to the A7SIII ? A price difference of 1500 to 2000 euros is almost two fold. And its competitive towards the A7c too, because of the stabilisation...and the better grip. I really think the A7III is still the best performer from Sony in bang for buck terms..
Another awesome review Jake! Currently have the A7III for Real estate work. Would you think the A7Siii would be a good hybrid for photo and video for real estate?
well if you plan to use my affiliate link then YES. lol So if all you do it real estate photos and video then I would say sort of. The video is a big improvement in dynamic range etc so if you are doing higher end properties that you want to show off the interior as well as the views through the windows at the same time then yeah this camera will do that. If you want to film from outside into the interior or the other way around then yes since it has the shockless white balance (transitions smoothly through white balance changes) but if you don't really need those things then I'd stick with the A7III until next year when the a7iv is released. It will likely inherit some of the video features etc and be a better photo camera as well.
Jake Sloan totally agree! I shoot my videos in 60 frames so having 4K 60 10bit 422 would be niceee, could always use a7iii for photos and siii for video
Very true and the 4K 60 and 120 is just amazing on this camera. I’m pretty much doing the same. A7iii is photos and a7sIII is video (and photos in a pinch or when I’m traveling light) cheers!!
Hey im considering the a7 siii . now im far from a professional videographer but looking for some solid advice . I record rap battles and vlog , my main things im looking for 4k of course that can also record past 30 minutes 45 - 0ne hour preferably and up to date.future proof / and it has to be less than a year old which camera should i go for??
I wished you had compared the APS-C video option of the A7SIII with full frame video shoots. Splitted into footage done with full frame lenses versus APS-C lenses.
I think the A7iii is something special, and after watching this have zero desire to upgrade. The photo comparison put the nail in that coffin. Excellent video, btw.
This comparison showed me I don't need s series... A7iii is enough... Though cheaper a7iv I might purchase later on.. I love photos and get photo job... Often. You are doing really good content
Nice and comprehensive comparison, thank you, Jake Sloan! I currently own an A6300, I use it mainly for video. I saw the difference between A7iii and A7Siii. But I wonder, is there a mind-blowing difference between A6300 and A7iii in the video department, or should I go straight to A7Siii? It's a big financial difference as you know. Thank you! I would really appreciate your opinion.
The difference between the a6300 and a7III would not be huge, you would see a bigger difference between the 6300 and the A7c which has better colors and much better auto focus plus the flip out screen and the battery light would be considerably better.
@@JakeSloan Thanks! Got it! I'll stick to A6300 for now, I'll get a 18-105 f4, besides my Sigma 16 f1.4. I'll save some more till I'll have enough for A7Siii, mean time maybe A7IV will be released.
Hey Jake, I have an a6500 at the moment. I mainly do video but also really enjoy shooting portraits and landscape photography. Do you think the a7sIII would provide a good enough image quality for paying clients who want portraits??? Eventually I'd want a camera for video and a separate camera for photography, but at the moment I cannot afford to do that. Excellent video by the way. It's great to see a reviewer who actually provides well thought out real world examples instead of just talking about the cameras behind a desk!
Thank Nathan! I LOVE the a7sIII for photo work and I have used it for commercial work without anyone having an issue. I actually like it a bit better for some photo work since it has such great dynamic range. I would have no issue using it for photo work at all, I did a video about it here and do touch briefly on portraits: ua-cam.com/video/pCBGg-oeGJ4/v-deo.html Cheers!
hey jake love from india , im pretty confused which camera to buy with a very tight budget A7iii would be better or A7siii ??? keep making videos and stay connected
I did a whole video about the a7sIII photography here: ua-cam.com/video/pCBGg-oeGJ4/v-deo.html but it Depends on the end use of the photos (print vs web etc) I’ve used mine for a lot of paid jobs that were mostly destined for web but I did just sell a few photos for a catalog. I would go higher megapixel (a7riii or rIV
Hey man ! Loved the comparison ! I'm interested in the videos you make of your hikes, cave exploration, and so on, do you have an other channel with them ? Cheers !
I would go with the A7III for more photo work or the A7rIII if you can afford it. If you can wait a few months the rumors are that Sony will be releasing the A7IV early next year. That said the A7III is a great price right now at 1,600 USD on sale
Well I was high up but also had been pushing hard to get up there and started filming before I really caught my breath. I bet those ice caves looked amazing on your LG!!
As a ghost hunter shooting in low to hardly any light id like the A7 iii but lordy lord id absolutely LOVE the A7 siii! Unfortunately until I can get Sony money I'll have to continue making my Canon m50 mark ii work. It's great in well lit areas, trash in low light. The m50 mark ii struggles at higher iso, I'm limited to 800-1000 before there is so much noise that I cant get rid of it in post :(
Great comparison. And the most obvious thing is the 10 Bit 4:2:2 - it is so obvious! Amazing! Photography: For my eyes and based on the photos in your video: A7III all the way ... but I'm a video guy - so it really doesn't matter to me :) Low light - of corse the S-model is far better, but I know that from my good old A7SII, which still works pretty good. If I wouldn't use the FS5II, I would get the A7SIII. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the great video! Take care!
I agree the 10bit 4:2:2 is just so much better even after UA-cam crushes it lol. I still plan to use my a7III for photos but video and just run and gun stuff the A7sIII will be it. Photos are great too but the video is just wonderful. Thanks for watching! Cheers
Jake Sloan that 10 Bit dynamic range is just so wonderful! Makes everything look so......(over used I know) Cinematic. So 🔥.....the flip out screen and touch menu though.....and it still has custom buttons lol
Hi, you are the only person right now who can confirm this. Does the infamous "star eater" problem still exist in the A7S3 for astrophotography/capturing stars? :( I am so confused, I've watched your video back to back :(
@@JakeSloan So the shots from your video were shot also with that lens right? I am asking because I am working with Sony A7m3 but using mostly nativ lenses (Zeiss 55mm, Sony 28 and 35 mm). But seems like its time to purchase first zoom lens. And this Tamron is my first choice so far.
I would love to get my hands on the A7S III, maybe one day :P Btw cool timelapse at 11:37 but I would turn off AF to keep it from hunting at times. Thank you for this sweet comparison video
I have downloaded both of your raw file and when i zoomed in a7ii pics looks blurry and a7s ones looks way more sharp and crisp why is that?? Is there anything wrong with my device bcoz a7 iii pictures are double the size.. but in clarity they are way behind.. is a7s more sharper??
@@JakeSloan hope u used same lens??? Something is wrong i think if not then a7iii is not the camera to buy.. its way behind in video and now all the 24MP looks just numbers
Appreciate the fact that you linked a raw material for me to download for free to see if my laptop can do well in editing! You saved me %0 bucks of renting a camera!
why is it Sony A7s III have 12 MP and the & a7 III have 24 mp what is the difference why is it the 12mp have great quality while the 7 III have more pixel than the s III :)
it has 12mp sensor so the pixels of the sensor are larger and let in much more light with much less noise and much cleaner image. Thats why the a7sIII has such great low light performance. The a7III is more of a hybrid photo and video camera so it has more mp for photo work
Thanks Jake - very useful comparison. Im a hybrid shooter mainly for social media content. Im just trying to figure if the A7S3 is overkill for my business. I really want my next camera to have excellent AF as I have to work so fast. I considered the A7C but cant figure if the ergonomics would slow me down.
Love this location! I was just out there the other night shooting the Aurora! I only have the a7s and some a6xxx at the moment though. The new cameras look amazing
Oh man!!! I was out there the other night hoping to catch the Aurora too but apparently I missed it! My hope was to film the Aurora rather than do the typical time lapse of it. I drove to the end of arch angle road. Where did you end up and what time did the Aurora come out?
@@JakeSloan previewed on my 1440p display, the a7iii appeared sharper, I’m on my phone now, but I’ll update this tomorrow with more detail. I also have one more thing, you opened this video recording on the a7s, (flip out screen) your jacket looks “x” red on the FPV shots, then you showed two shots (comparison) of The cameras with tie jacket in the frame, the supposed “a7iii” shot had the same “x” red, while the a7siii red looked different. Additionally the color appear better on the a7iii. Still happy to write this off to display calibration, export and youtube compression and my tiredness. Thats the Tamron 17-28
@@JakeSloan Thanks Jake great content!
which drone did you use? is that the mavic 2 pro?
This was the mavic 2 pro yes
Amazing footage bro. Looks super cold though!
Thanks bro!!
One more Subscribe Jake, nice and perfect Vlogs! thx
Thanks very much!
Good stuff Jake, you got yourself a new subscriber! Question, what is the tripod you were using in the video?
Thank you very much!! I use the Peak Design travel tripod now. It's great light weight and handles conditions well. Cheers!!
I like the A7III colors better personally.
They are very close, much closer than I thought they would be for sure
Great video - thanks. I have an A7S3 and was wondering if it was worth getting the A73 for photos as I want to print around A3 size, ore do you think the A7S3 is going to be good enough. Mainly portrait photos? Cheers again
The A7sIII is good enough for A3 with no issues. if you want a higher megapixel camera for photo work (I do a bit as well) then I would recommend waiting to see what the A7iv has to offer later this year. Cheers!
@@JakeSloan thanks and appreciated
Great video. I appreciate the comparisons between both and I really liked your low light performance comparisons.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it
Can you try on the 16-35 MM F4 with lens stab on?
I think I will be able to make that happen
Apologies if this has been asked already but are these shots straight out of the camera or graded? thanks!
Nope they were straight out of camera
@@JakeSloan cine color profile?
Great comparison! I have the a7iii and was looking to pick up the a7siii to do more video work. This review was exactly what I was looking for.
Awesome so glad to hear that!!
give me old one i want to shoot a movie ... but i don't have any camera
Cheers!
it is me or the a7siii looks much softer than a7iii? I'm watching in 4k in a 32 inch Benq monitor
interesting. I don't think it's softer...
Awesome vid bro!
Thanks brother! I can't wait till you have your own. I hope we get the chance to meet up and create something awesome together some day
so The Places from Death Stranding is Real
yes... yes they are lol
I’ve decided which camera I’m going with and is definitely a7siii... i love that camera tho
It's fantastic
I thought the decision is simple but I'm getting more and more confused 😱 please, help :(
If you are thinking mostly photography then go with the a7iii or a7riii if you want to do both video and photo work then look at the a7c. Cheers!
Agreed!
Dude thanks for putting out another amazing video. I wanted to ask what lake/ ice cave you're at...it seems like an awesome hiking/camping spot.
The lake is called Upper Reed Lake and those caves are part of Byron Glacier! Cheers
I would highly recommend the sony a7c for you! great camera for video work but less expensive than the a7siii
I wished you had compared the APS-C video option of the A7SIII with full frame video shoots. Splitted into footage done with full frame lenses versus APS-C lenses.
I would have liked to do that as well
Thank You for this!!!
youre welcome
I have Sony zv e10 and Sony a7iii, I need to sale one. I do mainly youtube talking head videos... which should i keep
I’d keep the zv-e10 since it had the flip around screen!
@@JakeSloan is the a7 iii camera not good for anything else?
I think the A7iii is something special, and after watching this have zero desire to upgrade. The photo comparison put the nail in that coffin. Excellent video, btw.
The a7iii is a fantastic value camera
Awesoome color , in videos love it
thank you!
This comparison showed me I don't need s series... A7iii is enough... Though cheaper a7iv I might purchase later on.. I love photos and get photo job... Often. You are doing really good content
I'm glad to hear this, it's exactly the reason why I made this video. new cameras are exciting but not always needed. Cheers!!
Great channel! I'm trying to decide whether canon r5 or sony a73 or sony a7s3. Useful info. Thank you!
you're welcome!
I would have no issue using it for photo work at all, I did a video about it here and do touch briefly on portraits: ua-cam.com/video/pCBGg-oeGJ4/v-deo.html Cheers!
hey jake love from india , im pretty confused which camera to buy with a very tight budget A7iii would be better or A7siii ???
keep making videos and stay connected
if you are on a tight budget then get the a7iii for sure
@@JakeSloan thank you so very much jake 🥰❤️❤️
How is the a7siii when it comes to product photography or portrait photography, like in paid jobs?
I did a whole video about the a7sIII photography here: ua-cam.com/video/pCBGg-oeGJ4/v-deo.html but it Depends on the end use of the photos (print vs web etc) I’ve used mine for a lot of paid jobs that were mostly destined for web but I did just sell a few photos for a catalog. I would go higher megapixel (a7riii or rIV
very practical comparison. great review. thanks Jake
You’re welcome! Cheers
Hey man ! Loved the comparison ! I'm interested in the videos you make of your hikes, cave exploration, and so on, do you have an other channel with them ? Cheers !
Not specifically I do try and include some of the story of getting to these places in some of my videos on this channel though
@@JakeSloan Too bad, would be cool. Maybe an idea to think about, you seem to live an exciting life :)
Nice video.
Low light performance of a7siii will be better than a7iii because of lower megapixel bigger pixel size
exactly right
Im making the switch to mirrorless. I do more pictures over video. Would you recommend a7iii or a7sii?
I would go with the A7III for more photo work or the A7rIII if you can afford it. If you can wait a few months the rumors are that Sony will be releasing the A7IV early next year. That said the A7III is a great price right now at 1,600 USD on sale
I wanna go Alaska after watching this vid
You should!
Well done! I really appreciate the real-world examples used and your side-by-side comparisons are so simple yet effective. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you very much! Cheers
good work. the video is glorious on my LG OLED display. BTW you must be at 12,000 feet as you're breathing heavy just talking.
Well I was high up but also had been pushing hard to get up there and started filming before I really caught my breath. I bet those ice caves looked amazing on your LG!!
I shoot on the A7III, I would love to know what lense you used on both cameras in the video
I used the Tamron 17-28 for everything you saw in this video. Cheers!!
@@JakeSloan Which adapter do you use?
@@bigwaynz1 you dont need an adapter for the tamron 17-28 E mount.
@@bigwaynz1 it's a e mount for Sony. Very good lens. You will love it.
The m50 mark ii struggles at higher iso, I'm limited to 800-1000 before there is so much noise that I cant get rid of it in post :(
dang!
I am watching it, again.
Awesome. Watch as many times as you like 😂
You make me grateful about a choice. Because sometimes to get something good doesn't have to be expensive. Thank you
Exactly right!!
So 🔥.....the flip out screen and touch menu though.....and it still has custom buttons lol
and crispy and buttery and I think there are one or two more words all the cool "you tubers" use...
I have one more question, what microphone have you been using on this video? Its sounds sooo clear and crisp. Has the sound been edited at all?
on pretty much all my videos I use this one: ua-cam.com/video/Jf_fXBjaIUw/v-deo.html
I may have missed it, but did you talk about the dual ISO capability on the siii?
I touched on it briefly but I talk a bit more about it in my low light video.
Nature Scenes are mesmerising can let me know where this is shot (which place on earth is this )
this is in Alaska
Hi, you are the only person right now who can confirm this. Does the infamous "star eater" problem still exist in the A7S3 for astrophotography/capturing stars? :( I am so confused, I've watched your video back to back :(
No the A7sIII does not have a star eater problem. That is really a problem with the high resolution cameras like the A7rIII and A7rIV
@@JakeSloan Thanks so much mate, really appreciate it :)
0:20 Is it Tamron lens 17-28 f.2.8. ??
yes it is, I shoot most my videos with it
@@JakeSloan So the shots from your video were shot also with that lens right? I am asking because I am working with Sony A7m3 but using mostly nativ lenses (Zeiss 55mm, Sony 28 and 35 mm). But seems like its time to purchase first zoom lens. And this Tamron is my first choice so far.
What an excellent video. Attention to explanatory detail is mighty impressive
Thanks
Fantastic video! Thank you so much for the valuable information.
Thank you very much and you're welcome!
I would love to get my hands on the A7S III, maybe one day :P Btw cool timelapse at 11:37 but I would turn off AF to keep it from hunting at times. Thank you for this sweet comparison video
Yes it did lol. Cheers man. I hope you do get your hands on one
I think that has to do more with the focus capabilities of the a7sIII because I have noticed the same thing...
You saved me %0 bucks of renting a camera!
cheers
why is it Sony A7s III have 12 MP and the & a7 III have 24 mp what is the difference why is it the 12mp have great quality while the 7 III have more pixel than the s III :)
it has 12mp sensor so the pixels of the sensor are larger and let in much more light with much less noise and much cleaner image. Thats why the a7sIII has such great low light performance. The a7III is more of a hybrid photo and video camera so it has more mp for photo work
@@JakeSloan thanks sir
Thanks Jake - very useful comparison. Im a hybrid shooter mainly for social media content. Im just trying to figure if the A7S3 is overkill for my business. I really want my next camera to have excellent AF as I have to work so fast. I considered the A7C but cant figure if the ergonomics would slow me down.
The a7c would be the one I’d recommend honestly. It’s really great for video work.
@@JakeSloan Yeah I have a astro modded a7s and have been waiting to try shooting video this year. I'm sure it will be amazing on the new a7siii.
Maybe we will get the chance to do something together!
can you tell me plz where is this location.. I loved it and I wanna visit it As soon as possible
Can the a7sIII write Full HD 10 bit 100 fps with sound? (Not S&Q mode). And if so, what bitrade?
No it doesn’t. It will do 100/120fps with sound in 4:2:0 8bit only @100mb
@@JakeSloan Thanks!
Why they did this? This is also the most necessary setting for events!
Agreed... I assume they think everyone would rather film in 4K 120
hey i think you've gotten them wrong no joke
like in the comparison shots in the first two minutes
im 100% sure they're swapped
they are not swapped, I made sure to get them correct for this video. Why do you think they are?
Although when i thought of writhing this the moment i saw the first couple shots, i couldnt hello but notice how much better in my experience the a7iii shots looked like.
Regardless, great vides man, love your content. Beautiful scenery, well put together. If you’re happy, do this, if you’re looking for feedback, cut down on slack, 4 second transition? Make it a overlaid title while you’re speaking. People get bored fast, length doesnt matter, but into/unit of time does. That’s why Gerald undone exhausts and his 40 min reviews get views. That was a really good video
I have a question I have 3 Sony’s A7iii I don’t want to buy any gear right now because there is no a lot events for me :(
But I really like the colors you did on the a7iii what PP are you using you said default but what is it ?
