Great video Jake! I do like ur point about the autofocus being usable even in extreme under/over exposed conditions. But the a7iii seems to be holding its own in a lot of situations!
Thank you so much! Yeah aside from the great lowlight performance of the auto focus and of course much more options for video shooting the a7iii is still a FANTASTIC camera for all around creators. Cheers!!
My thoughts exactly,I mean we hear everything about it having greater dynamic range ans better colour science but is it worth the extra 2 thousdand dollar upgrade...not so sure,am glad I came across this review

You have the most in depth and useful reviews + comparisons that I've come across, and seeing the cameras being used in the field have made it so much easier for me to decide what will work best for my situation. Thank you so much and keep doing what you do!
Thank you so much!!! That is the reason I do the reviews the way I do. I want to show everything in use in the real world as much as possible to help people decide
The a7iii is an amazing camera for the hybrid shooter. Even tho the low light isn't as good as the A7siii, it's still waaayy better than everyone else. Great video 👌🏽

@@JakeSloan So the shots from your video were shot also with that lens right? I am asking because I am working with Sony A7m3 but using mostly nativ lenses (Zeiss 55mm, Sony 28 and 35 mm). But seems like its time to purchase first zoom lens. And this Tamron is my first choice so far.
As a ghost hunter shooting in low to hardly any light id like the A7 iii but lordy lord id absolutely LOVE the A7 siii! Unfortunately until I can get Sony money I'll have to continue making my Canon m50 mark ii work. It's great in well lit areas, trash in low light. The m50 mark ii struggles at higher iso, I'm limited to 800-1000 before there is so much noise that I cant get rid of it in post :(
The one thing I notice immediately is that the SIII has much better detail both in photo and video, and I think it's because of the lack of AA filter. When I moved from the original A7S mark I to the A7III, I noticed that my A7S had much better detail even though it was only 12mp. I find the A7III rather quite soft when you look at edges or high contrast scenes. I also notice the same thing with my old Fuji X-Pro1 which also has no AA filter, it has a much nicer/sharper look (though very bad dynamic range compared to the A7III. Still, the A7III is a great camera with a lot to offer but I do miss the details of the S series. Great video.
I tend to do more video, am thinking the Sony A7Siii may be the better for me...both look like great cameras though! Great comparison review on both cameras Jake!
Thanks for being super informative and providing an honest opinion about which camera you feel is best for which type of shooter, it was exactly the video I was looking for thanks man! Super well done visually too!
Thanks for the excellent video, the real world side by side comparisons are really good, the cave comparison is on point. Wondering if you shot everything in the cave just handheld and if you used the Gyro data to stabilise that footage? Would be really cool to see a video demonstrating hand held Gyro stabilised footage of the A7Siii vs the non-Gyro stabilised footage in a real life situation - e.g. walking up and down hills/mountain side, walking in the caves on uneven surfaces and maybe demonstrating how it looks when you do a hop (perhaps over a stream) as well. The Gyro data is really intriguing.
You're welcome! In the cave I used a tripod in the cave since I was running in and out a bunch and I wanted to keep things exactly in the same spot. I plan on doing a comparison video with gyro vs standard vs active stabilization soon! Cheers
Hi, you mention that A7S3 isn't that good for astrophotography - I'm planning to get into more of Astrophotography, I'm confused between the A7C (which is same as the A73 in many ways) and the A7S3, but the lack of ability to shoot the milky way in all its glory will be a deal breaker for me. At the same time, A7C is just 8bit which is annoying. I would love to hear your advice please, thank you.
Love this location! I was just out there the other night shooting the Aurora! I only have the a7s and some a6xxx at the moment though. The new cameras look amazing
Oh man!!! I was out there the other night hoping to catch the Aurora too but apparently I missed it! My hope was to film the Aurora rather than do the typical time lapse of it. I drove to the end of arch angle road. Where did you end up and what time did the Aurora come out?
I was expecting raw footages to grade to see if I want to buy the camera..the only thing I don't like about the A7 series is that the slog-2 are complicated to grade..does 10 bit on the a7siii make it better than the 8 bit color on the a7iii to grade footage?
There is a link in the description but also some slog 3 files can be found through the link in this video: ua-cam.com/video/YfuBIppRVwA/v-deo.html in short though slog 3 is fantastic and 10 bit makes a huge difference in color grading in post
I wished you had compared the APS-C video option of the A7SIII with full frame video shoots. Splitted into footage done with full frame lenses versus APS-C lenses.
@@JakeSloan Yes sir, was planning this October. Will see. If I do, we should do a little comparison video of my EOS R5 and your A7siii. Would be really interesting :)
Great video - thanks. I have an A7S3 and was wondering if it was worth getting the A73 for photos as I want to print around A3 size, ore do you think the A7S3 is going to be good enough. Mainly portrait photos? Cheers again
The A7sIII is good enough for A3 with no issues. if you want a higher megapixel camera for photo work (I do a bit as well) then I would recommend waiting to see what the A7iv has to offer later this year. Cheers!

Thank you for the comparison, I see that A7III still has some advantages over A7SIII. I just want the flipping screen though but I think I'll hold on to my A7III for now. Their shots are indistinguishable side by side.
They are very close very very close. I would wait for the a7iv which will probably come next year and will likely get some of the video features from the A7sIII. Cheers!
Hey Jake, I have an a6500 at the moment. I mainly do video but also really enjoy shooting portraits and landscape photography. Do you think the a7sIII would provide a good enough image quality for paying clients who want portraits??? Eventually I'd want a camera for video and a separate camera for photography, but at the moment I cannot afford to do that. Excellent video by the way. It's great to see a reviewer who actually provides well thought out real world examples instead of just talking about the cameras behind a desk!
Thank Nathan! I LOVE the a7sIII for photo work and I have used it for commercial work without anyone having an issue. I actually like it a bit better for some photo work since it has such great dynamic range. I would have no issue using it for photo work at all, I did a video about it here and do touch briefly on portraits: ua-cam.com/video/pCBGg-oeGJ4/v-deo.html Cheers!
I would go with the A7III for more photo work or the A7rIII if you can afford it. If you can wait a few months the rumors are that Sony will be releasing the A7IV early next year. That said the A7III is a great price right now at 1,600 USD on sale
Thanks for that video, I use my A7III for photography only (for film I have a RED Komodo) and I was in doubt if I should upgrade for the A7SIII. Now I know that I don’t need that! 🙏🏻 thanks!
I have a very low level question from a newbie to nature photography: How do you protect your fancy cameras when you are outside during the winter time ? I would also be interested in how you protect your camera outside in the rain. Thanks.
You're the best! Hope you reply to my comment too.. So detailed and so much to show, day time, cloudy, walking, driving, dark cave moments everything included! I've see you replied to every one of your comments, your the king! Maybe little advice to me? So if I'm beginner and don't wanna spend 10k on a gear + specific memory cards that cost 300-400$, lenses etc.. Would you recommend 7 lll to get started into videography and photography? I do have experience, just wanna step up more into intermediate level or better save up, spend some extra money and get the beast 7S lll?? Can't decide 7Slll, 7lll or 7c? Thanks!!:)
If you want to do mostly video work then I would recommend the a7c and some of the tamron lenses to start. if you want to do both video and photo work then get the a7III. You can see some of my favorite tamron lenses here: ua-cam.com/video/eqVEIj_zPww/v-deo.html and you can see a comparison of the a7c and a7iii here: ua-cam.com/video/HGP4Y6N4LdQ/v-deo.html Cheers
I have sony alpha37 but I want to upgrade for my traveling/landscape photography ( same vibe like this video ) and at first I was thinking about a6600 vs. a7III but now I am also considering a7C , a7rIII or a7sIII. I thought the decision is simple but I'm getting more and more confused 😱 please, help :(
Yeah dude, price is never lie. But My budget still on a7 iii.. Do you recommend this camera in 2021, still worth it to buy? Probably i use for videography, filming, hobby, sometimes job maybe.
Great comparison. And the most obvious thing is the 10 Bit 4:2:2 - it is so obvious! Amazing! Photography: For my eyes and based on the photos in your video: A7III all the way ... but I'm a video guy - so it really doesn't matter to me :) Low light - of corse the S-model is far better, but I know that from my good old A7SII, which still works pretty good. If I wouldn't use the FS5II, I would get the A7SIII. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the great video! Take care!
I agree the 10bit 4:2:2 is just so much better even after UA-cam crushes it lol. I still plan to use my a7III for photos but video and just run and gun stuff the A7sIII will be it. Photos are great too but the video is just wonderful. Thanks for watching! Cheers
Jake Sloan that 10 Bit dynamic range is just so wonderful! Makes everything look so......(over used I know) Cinematic. So 🔥.....the flip out screen and touch menu though.....and it still has custom buttons lol
Hello, i just have aquick question about the difference between a7s3 and a7m3 because i want to buy a7s3 but the retailer said me it is named as a7m3 so it is s3 or still a73 (the old one)?
Hey man ! Loved the comparison ! I'm interested in the videos you make of your hikes, cave exploration, and so on, do you have an other channel with them ? Cheers !
I just bought this camera last November and yesterday app of a sudden I can't get memory slot a to read my sd card I even tried using a different card and ran into the same problem . Any suggestions?
I have neither camera, but am looking to get a good hybrid. Should I wait til the A7 IV?? R5? A7s3? I shoot photography more than video, probably like 65/35, 70/30
If you can wait till early next year then wait. Sony will likely release or at least announce the a7iv and it would be a great camera for you. The R5 and r6 are excellent photo cameras if you only ever need to shot short clips of video here and there but the over heating issues really need to get worked out to be able to use them for significant video use.
Yeah then you could def go for the R5 or R6. If you do lots of landscape or bird photography then go for the R5 but if you do Astro or low light then go for the R6. It has better low light performance
I recently discovered your channel when I needed to set up my Ronin SC. I can't wait to finally get my hands on an a7SIII so I'm saving this one. BTW, what lav mic are you using? I need a good one and the audio quality is great!

I have it linked here: geni.us/rT3BQI7 Cheers
Im making the switch to mirrorless. I do more pictures over video. Would you recommend a7iii or a7sii?
I would go with the A7III for more photo work or the A7rIII if you can afford it. If you can wait a few months the rumors are that Sony will be releasing the A7IV early next year. That said the A7III is a great price right now at 1,600 USD on sale
Thanks for that video, I use my A7III for photography only (for film I have a RED Komodo) and I was in doubt if I should upgrade for the A7SIII. Now I know that I don’t need that! 🙏🏻 thanks!
Nice!
I have a very low level question from a newbie to nature photography: How do you protect your fancy cameras when you are outside during the winter time ? I would also be interested in how you protect your camera outside in the rain. Thanks.
I use a rain cover from Think Tank when needed but most of the time I don't worry about it unless it will be in heavy rain
Hey Jake I do reflexions videos, like 15 min short movies , which one would be better ?
I would get the A7sIII if you can
@@JakeSloan tanks jake , can you recommend me a lengs for movie ?
Can some make a video on how to set up the a7s iii for vlogging/filmmaking
I have one here: ua-cam.com/video/tX9OWvV67cQ/v-deo.html
Awesoome color , in videos love it
thank you!
I have sony alpha37 but I want to upgrade for my traveling/landscape photography ( same vibe like this video ) and at first I was thinking about a6600 vs. a7III but now I am also considering a7C , a7rIII or a7sIII. I thought the decision is simple but I'm getting more and more confused 😱 please, help :(
If you are thinking mostly photography then go with the a7iii or a7riii if you want to do both video and photo work then look at the a7c. Cheers!
Astounding comparison thank you.
Thanks!
@@JakeSloan Jake I think you may have done the most work ever for a comparison between 2 cameras.
Which lens did you had at the opening of your video?
Thanks! From Germany.
Thats the Tamron 17-28
@@JakeSloan Thanks Jake great content!
Yeah dude, price is never lie.
But My budget still on a7 iii..
Do you recommend this camera in 2021, still worth it to buy?
Probably i use for videography, filming, hobby, sometimes job maybe.
Nice It's still a fantastic camera, but for more video work I would get the A7c instead
wait for the A7 iv later this year
Great comparison.
So 🔥.....the flip out screen and touch menu though.....and it still has custom buttons lol
and crispy and buttery and I think there are one or two more words all the cool "you tubers" use...
Hello, i just have aquick question about the difference between a7s3 and a7m3 because i want to buy a7s3 but the retailer said me it is named as a7m3 so it is s3 or still a73 (the old one)?
no the A7sIII is different than the A7III. The A7sIII is: ILCE7SM3 and the a7III is: ILCE7M3
Hey man ! Loved the comparison ! I'm interested in the videos you make of your hikes, cave exploration, and so on, do you have an other channel with them ? Cheers !
Not specifically I do try and include some of the story of getting to these places in some of my videos on this channel though
@@JakeSloan Too bad, would be cool. Maybe an idea to think about, you seem to live an exciting life :)
I shoot on the A7III, I would love to know what lense you used on both cameras in the video
I used the Tamron 17-28 for everything you saw in this video. Cheers!!
@@JakeSloan Which adapter do you use?
@@bigwaynz1 you dont need an adapter for the tamron 17-28 E mount.
@@bigwaynz1 it's a e mount for Sony. Very good lens. You will love it.
I just bought this camera last November and yesterday app of a sudden I can't get memory slot a to read my sd card I even tried using a different card and ran into the same problem . Any suggestions?
See my reply to your other comment
Great comparison 👊🏻😎
You’re welcome!
Can you try on the 16-35 MM F4 with lens stab on?
I think I will be able to make that happen
I have neither camera, but am looking to get a good hybrid. Should I wait til the A7 IV?? R5? A7s3?
I shoot photography more than video, probably like 65/35, 70/30
If you can wait till early next year then wait. Sony will likely release or at least announce the a7iv and it would be a great camera for you. The R5 and r6 are excellent photo cameras if you only ever need to shot short clips of video here and there but the over heating issues really need to get worked out to be able to use them for significant video use.
@@JakeSloan Yeah, I won't really need to shoot like 10mins continuous ever, and if I do, it'd be in like 4k30 which doesn't overheat apparently.
Yeah then you could def go for the R5 or R6. If you do lots of landscape or bird photography then go for the R5 but if you do Astro or low light then go for the R6. It has better low light performance
Hello m’y friend thank you for the review, may I know which song is it please ? In your video. Thanks a lot
I have no idea, this video was made too long ago to remember lol
Fantastic job. 👏
Ty
I recently discovered your channel when I needed to set up my Ronin SC. I can't wait to finally get my hands on an a7SIII so I'm saving this one. BTW, what lav mic are you using? I need a good one and the audio quality is great!
Thanks! For almost all my on camera audio I use the Deity D3 Pro mic. You can see my review of it here: ua-cam.com/video/Jf_fXBjaIUw/v-deo.html Cheers!
