Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! I have a question about the 12mp. Would the video be pixelated on a say 50inch tv? Does tv resolution have the same effect on 12mp?
You do an exceptional job explaining things about the capabilities of the camera without spending too much time on the specs which will bore most viewers. The landscape scenes are phenomenal!
well then you will LOVE this camera!! I have a hard time shooting with anything else lol. the colors and dynamic range of this camera is just incredible!! Plus the photos are super clean
Jake. Thanks for this. I bought the A7s3 last year and was thinking about getting the A7R5 as well for resolution. But as you say, this camera takes great pics and the additional cost is hard to justify. Your photos with it are fabulous and what a beautiful place you live in. Stunning. Thanks again. 👍🙏

I saw that! The astro shots in this video were from me going out to try and catch the aurora but it never showed up so I shot the time-lapse instead lol. I have a 24mm 1.4 and this camera so I can shoot the aurora which should be spectacular later this month! Great point about shooting panoramas to get more detail as well! Cheers

Thanks Jake, this is very helpful. I think if your a social media content creator then this camera checks all the boxes - Im pretty sure I could crop in for social media. Personally I think its about 7 - 8 years ago since I did a large print for a client (from a D700 12mp). Ive done a exhibition stand and the images were from my D750 24mp, but the images I used were down-res on upload for Google Photos Album - so I reckon they were probably about 12mp and again they worked fine because you don't view them up close on a exhibition stand. I can get one from my grey market seller for £3000 (down £500) Im hoping it'll drop to near £2500 (my budget) when the A74 is released.
Heya, just wondering - I know its a dual iso camera, with dual iso's kicking in at 12800 for Slog3 and 2000 for Cine's - but what Iso does the dual native iso kick in on photo mode? anybody know?
Hey Tom, the second step in the ISO always kicks in at 4.3 stops above the base iso for whatever profile you are shooting. if you shoot in RAW the base ISO is 80 so the second step kicks in at 1600. Hope that helps cheers
@@JakeSloan honestly so so much! Legend thank you. It was doing my head in that my picture profiles base iso was still being applied in manual photo mode (shooting slog and shifting to manual photo mode and my lowest iso is still 640 - must be a firmware thing) - but great to know that the dual native doesn’t carry over!)
lol Thanks very much! It was a wet 5 mile hike out too. It started raining pretty hard but the worst of it waited till I got in my car thank goodness! Cheers
Nice review Jake. I agree, the stills in the right conditions really have a je ne cest quoi about them, it’s an absolute beast at sunset as that ultra clean iso starts to come into play. I think I had a faulty one as frame rate seemed very uneven and footage looked sketchy and unnatural, something I didn’t experience when I upgraded to the 7IV. Still, I do miss it for stills in low light, and who knows, maybe I’ll pick up a used one again sometime!
I agree with what you say about using this camera for photography. I am a retired photographer( not running a studio ) when I retired I was using a Nikon D200 aps c camera that was 10 mega pixel. I made a lot of enlargements with that camera 16x20 20x24 and larger. I photographed weddings families senior pictures and families. I rarely depended on cropping to make something larger. I always had the thought get it in camera so you don’t have to crop or fix it later in photoshop.
I completely agree. You can certainly blow these photos up larger and if you are standing back a bit it really isn’t noticeable at all. People talk about “needing” 45mp etc but you really don’t for most uses. Getting the framing right in camera is a better way to approach photos anyway lol. Cheers and thanks for the kind words.
completely right. If your viewing distance is more than a few feet say like 8-12 feet away you can actually print a 12mp photo up quite large and have no issues since you don't need as high of a dpi on the image.
Landscapes would NOT be what I would use it for. However, I'm curious as to how well it would do for wedding photography where cropping and high resolution is not needed as much. The low light capabilities and small file size seem like it might be perfect for this. I used my 12MP Nikon D700 for years after I owned a D800 for the exact same reason.
Hey Jake, excellent work as usual. Just a question regarding using the Focus Magnifier in live view stills mode. When I shoot at night and focus on the stars I can only get a maximum of 4x in that manual focus magnifier. On my Nikon Z6 I can go in to about 10 or 15 X magnification to fine tune manual focus. This is my first Sony camera but my understanding is that the other A7 series camera can zoom in a lot more than 4x .. even the A7S2 can go to 8x and it's also a 12 mpx sensor. Just wondered if that's what you found and if you had any suggestions.
I was looking at that as well and I haven't found any way to change it from the 4.1x default. I don't remember going more than that on my a7III either but I never looked deeply into it either. I will be doing some aurora and astro later this month so stand by on the suggestions lol. My default is always encouraging people to find infinity focus before going out at night but that doesnt always work. My second is find infinity focus using something far off illuminated by car headlights and then keep the camera on till you're finished shooting. However when I did do my one astro shoot with this camera so far I had no trouble cranking the ISO to where I could find and focus on the mountains in the distance using the EVF which worked out really well. I hope that helps! Love your channel by the way. fantastic stuff! Cheers
Swear to god, you're not just selling me on the camera, you're making me want to go back to Alaska again. Haven't been there since I moved away at age 16 ♥
Thanks for the video, im still going to wait for a7iiii to drop to buy my next camera but honestly i been thinking of getting a7siii for photography since my a7riii just has way too much detail for portraits
The a7iv will likely come early next year and will probably be a fantastic camera. I’ll be trading in my a7iii when it does. For now the a7sIII is fantastic and for more photo heavy work my a7iii does really well. Cheers!!
I've blow these up to 30inchs on the longest edge (did a test print) and to be honest even standing an inch away from I can't see any pixels, you'dd have to have to a decerning eye to see noise/pixels especially if printing on to a photo rag, the texture of the paper will eat any of that up. I know the a7 3 has much the same qualities, but personally id take a high Dr and clean image with outstanding video for family stuff any day EDIT to my eye the A7s 3 has better tone also. especially for portraits
I haven't yet. They changed the shutter significantly and it's I really like the way it sounds, but I haven't had the need to use the silent shutter yet
Is the a7siii autofocus that much better than the a7iii? I am trying to decide between the two based mainly on the autofocus quality and reliability for video. Not so much for the video codecs. Also use it for photography.
it is much better but if you want to save some money and still get the better auto focus and larger image resolution get the A7c you can see my comparison here: ua-cam.com/video/HGP4Y6N4LdQ/v-deo.html
GREAT video.. THANK You..I also kept my A7lll... I received the camera last..went out and shot some video and photos....BUT. why can't I open my images?? I can download the clips and see them BUT my RAW files are there but show just a white face..there is no picture??? Any suggestions?? A wrong setting on my part?? Again...great video and channel!!
You will want to use this: imagingedge.sony.net/en-us/ie-desktop.html to be able to view your photos. Since Sony is using new file formats it may take a bit for the normal computer software to be made compatible but until then the Imagine edge software from Sony works pretty well. Cheers
If you can wait till around January to see what sony has in store. I don't know anything but I suspect if they are going to announce the Sony A7IV it will be early next year. Cheers!!
With certain power banks that have USB C Power out delivery, it will just run and run and run. Plug it into the wall with the MacBook Pro charger and it runs indefinitely.
Jake, You touched briefly on the smaller file sizes due to the 12 mp images. I've watched your other A7SIII videos and was wondering if you could touch on the file sizes for filming and how your computer (what are you using?) handles editing and everything? I don't remember you mentioning it previously. I'm still waiting on my preorder to arrive and other creators have made me a bit nervous about massive file sizes, storage needs, and computers struggle to handle the files. I'd be interested in your settings, editing setup, and how you're managing it. Thanks!
That video is coming soon!! lol If you shoot in XAVC S 10bit 4:2:2 the file sizes are only slightly larger than files from my a7III but you have much better color info. My computer handles those just fine as well. The HS codec takes a lot more work from my computer to edit and the I codec file sizes are quite a bit larger. I hope that helps. My settings video should be coming next week! Cheers
HelloJake, I love your video on Sony A7s III Photography. I am placing an order to purchase this camera. The lenses I chose are Sigma 85mm DG DN Art 1.4 and also Sigma 14-24mm Art lens. Please let me know if I have chosen the right lenses for video and photography? Thanks
I still work with the A7S (first gen) and however his 35,8 cms. real size files, I sent to print pictures of one shot to 80 cms., and some composite of 4 shots (because the nature of the scene) even to a 150 cms. (everyone of you know there is some good resize softwares, isn't?) The detail in my 150 cms. pictures is amazing, no one believe those images where did with 12,3 mpx. (mesure which is not all about real detail... I can show everybody how much face detail my portraits have) My music concert works are thankful of that sensor.

Another question, I want to be a vlogger but I am concerned about the price , so should I go with the sony 20mm f 1.8 lens or should I just spend the extra 900 dollar investment on the sony 14mm f 1.8 lens?
Hey! I'm pretty new to photography, and just bought a A7iii (upgrading from the RX100 vi) would you say that the A7s is better than the A7iii for low light photos?
Thanks for the vid and super thanks for providing the RAW photo samples! Thinking of switching to the FX3 from my A7IV due to my experience with the A7IV overheating in video...but I'm still a hybrid shooter, so I need to know if the 12mp is acceptable for my work. Your vid and samples helped me a lot.
Well doing mostly photography, I wouldn't trade my A7R2 for an A7S2 that I tried, why? Doing the scaling down of your processed 42MP image to a 12MP image gives SOO much more detail and clarity, in fact after denoising, the R cameras take as good of an image regarding noise, if not better that the S series. R series also give you the details in the portraits' eyes or when you really need a little more resolution (landscape etc) While I see no need for the 61MP of the R4, I dont think you should neglect your work station when you work with good gear. Depending on your PC/Mac and software, you shouldn't have issues with the processing. What's your setup?
@@JakeSloan Thanks! If you had to pick a camera that would work great for video and photo, would you go for the a7Siii, a7Riv or the A7c? Thanks in advance! Not sure how much difference 8bit vs 10 bit in video will make when just learning.
Man at this point I’d be extremely happy to just shoot with the a7sIII. The photos are amazing the video is incredible in every situation I’ve thrown at it.
I am working on my video of the a7c and a7iii to release tomorrow. If you would rather save some money but like the flip out screen and the fantastic auto focus that is in the a7sIII then I would pick the a7c for sure. stay tuned!
Great review really appreciate it just one question, would you recommend it for product photography? I would love to use its video capability but I would also want to use it for product photography as well but cant find anybody talking about that. Thanks.
yes and I have, This camera takes incredible good photos. unless I know I will need the extra resolution for cropping etc I rarely use my a7III anymore. The photos coming from the a7sIII are just better
I have been using the Tamron 17-28 a lot the sony 24 1.4 GM and the tamron 70-180 a lot. I would start with the 17-28 or 28-75 from tamron. great lenses at a great price. you can see my reviews of them here: ua-cam.com/play/PLxSrVyzW8T0ofLHscBKHuKe0wSZXfPMhz.html
Hello Jake, found you via Kevin's talk you guys had the other day...great channel you have going here. I have a question about the A7SIII...I'm heavily invested in EF "L" Glass and higher end Sigma and Tamron glass too...can this glass be adapted to the A7SIII? Starting to really hate what I see from the R5 and R6 vs. A7SIII...but don't want to spend a bunch on new glass with the A7SIII costing close to $4,000 after tax. Thanks
adapting glass is possible but very hit/miss when it comes to autofocus performance. It can be done and works fairly well in photo mode but video auto focus is very inconsistent unfortunately. Thanks for checking out my channel!! Cheers
Kind of going like backwards less detail resolution slapping my old mirrorless olympus compact camera sensor to ff camera body. 8-12mp bare minimum to get by...but nowadays 24mp should be standard...r6 20mp is sweetspot to get by both day and night shots rather low light or not. BUT 24-32 is the best..I think higher mp is overkill unless very big prints in very high resolution or alot cropping...which unlikely and you have to be close to tell difference.
Not really. Since it’s 12mp they didn’t include apsc mode because you would have a very small photo in the end. There is clear image zoom and I’ll have a video coming about it soon!
Sunrise Water Media for this video the first 3 shutter sounds you hear is just a sound effect. The 4 shutter you hear at 1:17 is the actual shutter sound recorded by my GoPro.
Love the videos you create for us so thank you! I also love that you are spending time showing how amazing the photography side of this camera is so also thank you! I would love more photos videos on this fantastic camera. The weather sealing I’ve been so wondering about. #ThatCreativeLife
Hello! I'm thinking about to buy a new camera. i know that Sony A7 SIII has the best 4K, but... Are 12MP good for stills? Landscapes, persons, animals, citys, stars in the night... What do you think? Thanks!
Thank you Jake. Several videos say this is not a good camera for photography. You’ve sufficiently proven the a7sIII is quite the opposite for all the reasons highlighted here.
You should be an main stream actor. Ma sha Allah You have the look. Now with reg to review I have sonya7iii, purchased sony 20-70mm f4. Dont think its a good match for indoor shoot. What do you say
Great video. Thank you. What are your thoughts on the more recent AI tools such as Adobe’s enhance or Topaz Gigapixel? I have been using the a7siii for photography for a while now, and some times just for fun, I use a combination of those tools plus photoshop to resize some rest images to ridiculous sizes, and it is so surprising to see just how far you can push it!!
GREAT video thanks so much. I have the amazing a7siii which I bought after getting the Fuji XT4 at beginning of the year and the stabe being unusable for video (but love it for photography), and I’ve been wondering whether I’d regret selling the Fuje. But at the same time committing to 2 systems going forward is a big ask especially as I don’t own much glass and I primarily shoot video. You’re helping me come to the conclusion that the a7siii can still give me incredible shots (I don’t need to crop) and I could streamline my kit and at the same time put the money from selling towards new Sony glass. Do you know if the a7siii specifically has AUTO DRO? I can see it listed on the Sony spec page but can’t find settings ANYWHERE (despite having “DRO AUTO” on screen). I’ve played with DR bracketing but I really want an in-camera auto HDR option when I want to get things edited quick! If anyone knows please comment! Thanks!
Awesome! The A7sIII does have auto DRO but that isnt the same as HDR, That being said the A7sIII does have incredible dynamic range and can shoot in HDR settings
Thanks! No sharpening in post. This was all shot with the default camera settings no picture profile and using my tamron 17-28 lens or in some cases my Sony GM 24 1.4. I’ll be sharing a setup and settings video soon! Cheers!
@@JakeSloan Thank you, I am a new sub and waiting for the settings video :) Would be nice to see a comparison between default settings and standard profile which I was told looks great too. Any need to shoot in S-slog3?
I agree 100%. Also when people talk about prints very few people realize that you can print pretty large and if you are standing 6-8 feet away you still won’t see the pixels.
I will be honest, the photos look grainy and muddy. For video I would love it but for stills I think coming from a nikon d850 I would be very frustrated.

I can get one from my grey market seller for £3000 (down £500) Im hoping it'll drop to near £2500 (my budget) when the A74 is released.
Nice! I agree 12mp is more than enough for social media these days. Hopefully the a7iv coming will drop the price on the other cameras a bit.
Great video, loved your photos and the way you ended the clip was great. “Off for a 5 mile hike out”. 😂. Subbed
lol Thanks very much! It was a wet 5 mile hike out too. It started raining pretty hard but the worst of it waited till I got in my car thank goodness! Cheers
This video actually helped me so much, thank you!
Glad to hear it. Cheers!
Thanks! It really is fantastic but I do look forward to seeing what Sony has in store for the A7sIV!
@@JakeSloan absolutely agree, i had many exhibits with prints 30x45 cm from 12-20mp cameras and they looks good
completely right.
I think it would be fantastic for that
The images are stunning! wow!
Thank you very much!
Nice video! Been wondering about this. My initial thoughts were it’d be great for photo, despite 12MP. Thanks!
It actually is fantastic. I Love the photos coming out of it. simply great quality
Jake Sloan Oh I could tell by your photos! I’m very close to ordering mine 👍
Excellent.
Cheers
@@JakeSloan Thanks a lot Jake, appreciate your assistance.
Question , I know the a7siii is amazing for low light , but what about the image stabilization when filming handheld with no tripod at all ?
It’s not bad. Provided you can hold it reasonably steady
Swear to god, you're not just selling me on the camera, you're making me want to go back to Alaska again. Haven't been there since I moved away at age 16 ♥
oh dang! I hope you get back up here for a visit!
I know the a7 3 has much the same qualities, but personally id take a high Dr and clean image with outstanding video for family stuff any day
EDIT to my eye the A7s 3 has better tone also. especially for portraits
exactly right!!
Question :dual ISO, where are the sweet spots for stills
The sweet spot is the same as with video. The second stage is 4.3 stops above your base ISO
Have you used the A7Siii silent shutter? I wonder how it compares to other Sony full frames such as the A7iii or the A9. Thanks in advance.
Cheers
@@JakeSloan WOW.. I did not know this..THANK YOU so much!!!
@@JakeSloan Just an FYI the recent update in adobe is for the A7slll..just found out.. Thanks again for your help.
Fantastic I've been hoping they would add the update quickly! Cheers
good at landscape, but what about smaller subject matter?
It's great at smaller subject matter
Great video, thanks! Subbed. We are growing old waiting for the A7iv and am starting to think if i should just buy 7siii
If you can wait till around January to see what sony has in store. I don't know anything but I suspect if they are going to announce the Sony A7IV it will be early next year. Cheers!!
Can you hook up a power bank to this camera to make the battery last longer?
yes you can
With certain power banks that have USB C Power out delivery, it will just run and run and run. Plug it into the wall with the MacBook Pro charger and it runs indefinitely.
Jake,
You touched briefly on the smaller file sizes due to the 12 mp images.
Thanks
Those lenses will be excellent! Enjoy
Thumbs up from Kingsport, TN!
Cheers!!
DUDE! I'VE BEEN THERE!! SUCH A BEAUTIFUL HIKE!!!!
NICE!!! and yes it is!!
I still work with the A7S (first gen) and however his 35,8 cms. real size files, I sent to print pictures of one shot to 80 cms., and some composite of 4 shots (because the nature of the scene) even to a 150 cms. (everyone of you know there is some good resize softwares, isn't?)
The detail in my 150 cms. pictures is amazing, no one believe those images where did with 12,3 mpx. (mesure which is not all about real detail... I can show everybody how much face detail my portraits have)
My music concert works are thankful of that sensor.
exactly right!!! mp isnt everything, image quality and good composition make or break an image
Could you create a super-resolution photo to make large prints with the A7S III 12mp camera?
yes you could!
@@JakeSloan Thank you very much
That is about it. The photos are fantastic and the video quality is superb.
Considering the a7siii myself…thanks! I’ll be photographing in AK early September. Would love to know where that lake is you were by in this video?
This is reed lakes trail a GREAT day hike that is easy to get to by car!

Another question, I want to be a vlogger but I am concerned about the price , so should I go with the sony 20mm f 1.8 lens or should I just spend the extra 900 dollar investment on the sony 14mm f 1.8 lens?
just get the 20mm, it's great for vlogging
Hey! I'm pretty new to photography, and just bought a A7iii (upgrading from the RX100 vi) would you say that the A7s is better than the A7iii for low light photos?
Yes a bit but not a massive amount. You can see lots of low light examples shot with the A7III here: ua-cam.com/video/ElbyOSClk0o/v-deo.html
You're welcome!
I know you can film low light with the a7siii in 4k 60fps, but should you film 4k 60p in low lighting?
No
This is why I’m so excited to shoot with this camera. My 42mp A7R3 just slowed me down.
It's a TON of fun to shoot with. Cheers!
R series also give you the details in the portraits' eyes or when you really need a little more resolution (landscape etc)
While I see no need for the 61MP of the R4, I dont think you should neglect your work station when you work with good gear. Depending on your PC/Mac and software, you shouldn't have issues with the processing. What's your setup?
Hi Jake, do you have the same version of the photos from the A7III, trying an experiment with scaling up the photos using some Topaz software.
I have a few and the link is in the description of my a7sIII VS A7iii video here: ua-cam.com/video/0ICp7U1JR8M/v-deo.html
@@JakeSloan Thanks for the input. Of course you had to pick the most expensive option of the bunch! 😂 Appreciate your content. It's always helpful.
I am working on my video of the a7c and a7iii to release tomorrow. If you would rather save some money but like the flip out screen and the fantastic auto focus that is in the a7sIII then I would pick the a7c for sure. stay tuned!
Great review
really appreciate it
just one question, would you recommend it for product photography?
I would love to use its video capability but I would also want to use it for product photography as well but cant find anybody talking about that.
Thanks.
yes and I have, This camera takes incredible good photos. unless I know I will need the extra resolution for cropping etc I rarely use my a7III anymore. The photos coming from the a7sIII are just better
Thanks, will check raw photo today )) interesting
Cheers!
Great review, many thanks. Is 12mpx enough to print on A3 format please?
yes it absolutely is
any lens recommendation for A7S III?
Cheers
@@JakeSloan Thanks for the reply...
really beautiful landscape, stunning.
Thank you
Kind of going like backwards less detail resolution slapping my old mirrorless olympus compact camera sensor to ff camera body.
Agreed
Great video! Is there an apsc mode in stills for this camera? I can’t find that information anywhere!
Not really. Since it’s 12mp they didn’t include apsc mode because you would have a very small photo in the end. There is clear image zoom and I’ll have a video coming about it soon!
The A7S (first gen) it have APS-C mode and let you a 8 mpx file.
It has a apsc mode
Does it capture enough details in photos when zoomed in
It captures plenty of detail for most of my work. Your needs might be different though
Is the shutter sound "real" or just a recording played through a speaker?
Sunrise Water Media for this video the first 3 shutter sounds you hear is just a sound effect. The 4 shutter you hear at 1:17 is the actual shutter sound recorded by my GoPro.
How much for complete price with lens and extra Mike ???
Right around 4,200.00 USD
Jake Sloan thanks for replying
Love the videos you create for us so thank you! I also love that you are spending time showing how amazing the photography side of this camera is so also thank you! I would love more photos videos on this fantastic camera. The weather sealing I’ve been so wondering about. #ThatCreativeLife
Thank you very much! I’ve been very impressed by the weather sealing so far. It’s certainly better than the a7iii was. Cheers.
Hello! I'm thinking about to buy a new camera. i know that Sony A7 SIII has the best 4K, but... Are 12MP good for stills? Landscapes, persons, animals, citys, stars in the night... What do you think? Thanks!
thats what this video is all about it... yes it is
thank you thaaaaank you very much for this video!!!! :)
You're very welcome!
Hi Jake, thank you for the informative video, would you recommend this camera for wedding photography?
Video work yes absolutely but for wedding photography I’d probably recommend the new A7rV
You think the a7siii would work for product/ commercial photography?
it does, I've used mine a lot for that
Last time I printed out larger than 20' was in 1987.
Lol
What amazing camera 😍
Agreed!!
How to open these raw files??
You will need the image viewer from Sony look for Image Edge Desktop software from sony. Cheers
Thank you Jake. Several videos say this is not a good camera for photography. You’ve sufficiently proven the a7sIII is quite the opposite for all the reasons highlighted here.
Awesome. I’m glad it helped you
Thank you this video was awesome
You’re welcome thanks for watching!
Why do my photos always have noise, even during the day?
make sure you keep your ISO as low as possible
You should be an main stream actor.
Ma sha Allah
You have the look.
Now with reg to review
I have sonya7iii, purchased sony 20-70mm f4. Dont think its a good match for indoor shoot. What do you say
it's a great camera and that combination will work fine indoors until you get in very very low light
Would it be good for sports pictures
yes it would be decent for that
Is it me or just everyone hyped to have a new 📷? Haha this is serious photography, this video was a beautiful, I'm just wondering...
Of course I want one too
LOL oh it is an awesome camera...
Great video. Thank you. What are your thoughts on the more recent AI tools such as Adobe’s enhance or Topaz Gigapixel? I have been using the a7siii for photography for a while now, and some times just for fun, I use a combination of those tools plus photoshop to resize some rest images to ridiculous sizes, and it is so surprising to see just how far you can push it!!
they are good. I have messed with them a bit and it adds something to the photos for sure
@@JakeSloan Thanks man, such a shame considering its a feature on the other A7 series cameras. I wonder why the omitted it?!
Your video looks very good. What lens do you use? what settings, profile, etc? do you do any sharpening in post to make that image so clear?
Any need to shoot in S-slog3?

worth to buy this in Q3 ,Q4 2023!?
cause the price drop and a lot of video the user said it's suprisingly good comment !?
it's still a fantastic camera that I use every day for both video and photo work!
12 Mpixels is plenty for most applications. The phone manufacturers understand this.Large print and print is becoming a smaller market as we speak.
I agree 100%. Also when people talk about prints very few people realize that you can print pretty large and if you are standing 6-8 feet away you still won’t see the pixels.
