- Speed Racer (Wachowskis, 2008) isn't just a "cartoony" movie; it's also about cartoons. This video essay examines how the visual design of Speed Racer reflects on the technological processes behind the illusion of motion and cel animation.
Specifically, the video looks at how Speed Racer's visual design reproduces what Thomas Lamarre calls "animetism," a style of representing motion specific to anime.

Hands down, the best live action remake of animation to ever exist.
The peak of live action remakes, it never got better than this.
I was obsessed with this film as a kid. Its great to see it through a more mature lens. I knew I loved the look of it, but never made the connection to animation.
Great Video!
Speed Racer is one of my favorite movies, but I had never looked at it in this way. Really awesome video, love the incorporation of your references and LOVE the editing-I'm amazed at how you were able to work with such chaotic material and keep everything very easy to visually process.
thanks so much! i've been mostly watching your vids and What's So Great About That for editing inspo, so that means a lot.
This is a very important video that everyone should watch
thanks!
Agreed! Very interesting break down.
Speed racer was a big time childhood favorite for me. Really enjoyed this essay, I haven’t seen the movie but after watching this I’m definitely going to.
Good work man, subbed and thumbs upped!
The layering and compositing choices of this movie is something I heavily appreciated during my most recent rewatch of this film. I noticed how most of it looked like a surreal animated collage and this video put my thoughts into words! ❤
oh I LOVE this, this is amazing and explains a lot about why I love the aesthetic of this film!
thanks!
Some people said the movie was bad. But the feel of anime of color and movement made it AWESOME!!!🏁 I learned a lot of it. Thanks For It😊
Honestly, when I was adolescent I saw the first minutes of the movie and thought it was cheap garbage, until I was an adult and understood that the whole thing was carefully crafted I enjoyed the movie for what a great experience it was.
great vid! learning about cinematism for class and this really helped me grasp the concept! (even quoted some of the content I've been assigned)
cool! check out Pause and Select's video (in the info) for another great video on the subject.
I've rewatched this movie sooooo many times it's just sooo damn good, too ahead of it's time if it was release during winter instead of fall or came out a year later it probably would've done great
This is a really great explanation with enjoyable editing. Thanks!
Great! I love how all of your ideas and arguments fall into place neatly through the video. Introduced and then reintroduced. A bit cheesy, but it reminds me of grandmaster chess games, where an simple move turns out to be essential much later in the game.
thank you!!
I like the way that pops spins John Goodman did a great job there
This has been my favorite movie since I saw it in the theater and I've never thought of it with this perspective. Great analysis!
Ey yo! This video is perfect!
Damm!! You might be close to making a video about everything. Every single time I get interest in some theory you already made something. Thank you so much 🙏🏽
thanks! sounds like we have a lot of overlapping interests.
WOW! You brought something completely new to the table in terms of subject. Great job!
If you haven't seen Red Line yet, be sure to watch that.
I like Red Line a lot!
If you like fast speeds, I also recommend playing a game I'm doing a video on right now called XF Extreme Formula. It has the potential to surpass even that of F Zero GX. @@filmandmediastudieschannel
Brilliant video and brilliant film. I've thought about a lot of this for a long time.
dude this was a fantastic video! probably the best analysis of the visual style of speed racer on youtube, and an extremely informative video too! i actually learned a lot from this video! thank you for making it!
hey thanks!
This video is just amazing, just like the movie. Thank you for this. I will recommend it to everyone I know! (while still absorbing the knowledge taught here)
thanks much!
This video was a really big help with my thesis. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks, Shaughn! Did I misgender the Wachowski sisters in referring to them as the "Wachowskis"? Or are you referring to the quotation from the critic? If the latter, I think it might've been preferable to choose a different quotation that didn't refer to them that way. If the former, please let me know if referring to the Wachowski sisters as "The Wachowskis" is inconsistent with their preferences, as I wasn't aware of this.
@@filmandmediastudieschannel Oh no that was totally my fault for mishearing that.I watched again just in case. So sorry. I'll edit my original comment. Thanks again!
The zebra might actually be more directly referencing a zoetrope which ties it more closely to animation rather than Muybridge.
👀
hi joe
We were thrilled that they actually did the movie. Did enjoy it, BUT, they made it TOO cartoony, I mean, over the top cartoony. Broke our heart.💔🏁
I just love this essay
This is really a great video, really insightful and perfectly crafted ! Bravissimo
one of the best action/race movies of all time (:
I just watched the movie, is beautiful and perfect love it
Great video
Ill never understand why people like Jordan, who know so much about filmmaking (and the theory!), dont make their own films.
if jjba have a live action adaptation, they should do it like this.
It does have a live-action adaptation. Takashi Miike adapted the first few chapters of Diamond is Unbreakable a while back.

Oh, the visual language represents a non-normative way of experiencing/moving through the world. So this film is awesome because it's trans
Great video
