  • There is a town on the coast of Guatemala that can only be accessed by boat. The small fishing village of Livingston is not like the rest of the country because here is the home of Garifuna people that are also called Black Caribs.
They are basically descendants of African-Carib populations from Caribbean Islands and they speak their own language, they have their own traditions, food and music!!
In this video Be ready for some dramatic scenes, dance, pain, flirt and a lot of laughs while I'm learning more about this unique culture of Garifuna and their significant differences with Mayan.

Mr. Patron (tour guide) has a lot of wisdom and yes, he is definitely right. That said, I really don't think the younger guy was trying to scam you. He was polite. And yes, Tim...you are very street smart and would never get taken advantage of by paying more. You let the old man have his say, and that my dear brother, shows your character. You were so respectful, even though your tour guide overreacted just a little bit.
All in all, every person was very nice and it's such a blessing to connect with beautiful people on your travels.
Tim, you have the privilege of journeying all over the world and you live each day with a passion to connect, learn and show love and respect. You handle yourself well and you treat others so good.
You are a blessing to this world and people's lives; you have such an amazing effect on everyone that you come into contact with.
I see a part of myself in you when I was 24, only you are much more outgoing and gifted with compassion, social skills and showing that you really care.

That dude was looking out for your ass. HE nailed it, you fell right into their trap.. The guy with the alcohol who easily convinced you to come around corner with him for a drink. Talk talk talk then next thing you do you have a bar tab owed and no friends around.... I am glad that the elder man wasn't too irritated to come back and help you. He sees that hustle too often and you can tell how sick of seeing it he is. Especially with his reiterating the point over and over.
Be safe and don't trust everyone.

+++ I like the $$$ dynamics. Twenty year old males don't work and don't hustle except drinks from tourists $0.00. Mayan 65 year old man works 8 hours for $10.00. Grifinican Lady briads hair for 5 minutes and makes $8.00. That's time money management. Notice she turned her head when the dude tried to low ball her for $5.00 or $6.00. Mr. Philip made $20.00 for maybe an hour of his time as a guide and showing his culture.

That guy has no patience and doesn't realize that Tim is a tourist, so he's innocent to their way of life. Its no different than some foreigner visiting where ever anyone reading this lives. Anyone can be victim to fraud and deception, if one is a tourist. I know many would be in serious trouble if they were to visit where I live, there are far more dangerous places in the world than that town. As an elder, that guide should have spoken to Tim with respect, kindness and told him about the risks sitting down and drinking with those people. Tim is an adult, not a child so more consideration should have been shown to that guest. Due to the negative attitude I would have told that guy to walk. The man drinking I'm sure after a few drinks would be more than happy to guide Tim around, and he's seemed to be in a better mood. One cannot enforce their way of life onto others, some people drink and that's o.k. and some don't.

@Timmy Karter I just came across your video about Livingston today. I was raised in NY and now live in North Carolina but was born in Puerto Barrios Izabal, Guatemala. More specifically I am from a town calle el rastro. Thank you for this video show casing a portion of what Livingston has to offer. There's so much more to Livingston, puerto barrios and el rastro regarding the Gariguna people that the rest of the world has yet to see or hear about. That guy you met at 46 minutes roughly, the one that took you from your tour guy, i know him. His a really good dude and very humble. anyway, not sure where you at these days, but, if you ever find yourself in guatemala and want to do a follow up video on guatemala and livingston, I would love to be there and or get you with the right people to show you a bit of everything; garifuna food, garifuna drinks, night life, beach life, day life. and the experience would be at no cost to you. I would just love to see more youtuve videos about garifuna people around the world. Because we are everywhere/. Including Greece, spain. I lived in Spain for over 4 years. I had a somewhat similar experience when I visited Livingston in 2005. In 2002 I visited St Vincent and picked up the story of the Garifunas. So I knew some things before I came to Livingston. In Livingston I met a Garifuna guy and we talked a lot. He invited me to come to his house the next day for some home cooked Garifuna meal. He wanted me to give him some money to buy vegetables. I gave him some money and we parted ways and were supposed to meet the next day. When I came back to my hotel run by creoles and told them about my encounter they said: " Oh you have been fooled. He is just going to take the money and disappear". Anyhow I went to the place were I was going to meet the Garifuna guy the next day. And he was there. He had bought the vegetables and now we were supposed to go down to the sea and buy some fresh fish. By the sea I saw some fishing boats far out but they were coming closer. The boats came to the shore and we bought a big fish. At this time we had met a Norwegian girl and she came along. We went through the village and came to his house. He called upon his mother and gave her the fish and the veggies and told her to start cooking. The Norwegian girl, me and the Garifuna guy sat outside and we talked a lot about the situation for the Garifuna people. This time my previous knowledge came in handy. He had a similar story to tell like your "Boss" but he was actively trying to help Garifuna people and teach them to be proud of their culture and history. It was a very interesting chat. The food came, a fish soup, and we started to eat. To this day it remains one of the most delicious fish dishes I have ever tasted. So I really had a great time with my Garifuna friend. When I came back to my hotel I couldn't wait to tell them that their prejudices against my Garifuna friend had been totally unfounded.

Never leave your tour person when your in another country. Because he knows who you should avoid and this young man and the camera man could have gotten into some serious trouble. All because he wanted some alcohol. I hope he remembers this going forward. Stay blessed.

Thanks for sharing ur experience. This was nostalgic for me since my family is Garifuna and it has been a while since I have gone back. The girl with the baby braiding ur hair really had me laughing. The guy who want you to buy him a beer, hilarious. When I would go to Livingston, there was a woman who would say to me.... " Hola Prima!" And then ask me for 20 quetzales. And I would give it to her. I didnt know her and I found out she wasn't my cousin! Anyway this was great content. LMAO! The Patron Philip is the wisest man from ur video. He is full of knowledge...You pick a good tour guide.

That town looks so nice and welcoming. I used to live in a place like that in El Salvador back in the early 90s

What a great experience, and great video, and the people there was so nice accept the tour guide. Because he was very disrespectful to the tourist man and the people that live there and that has nice houses, and saying that the people really don't do much which there was one man that had a bottle of some sort of liquor that pretty much was hanging out and won't disrespect the man because it could be possible that he does work. But I saw alot of people working slicing fishes, ladies cleaning clothes, man maintaining the streets with a shovel in his hand and he's sixty five yrs old, ladies maintaining a restaurant, ladies hairstylist even though the last hairstylist did much more better than the others. And this bitter old rastafarian man walking away from his tourist because he's rushing him probably because he wants to get paid and upset because the tourist stop to look around and to get to know the people, and if you notice when the tourist was drinking the rastafarian said I don't give a f##k I'm out of here, but when it came to the rastafarian to get water it was ok, and when he received the water then he preceded quickly left the tourist once again, and there's something he says when he gets payed he donates to the children, but we don't know if its true or not, because according to the way he acts sounds like he only care of himself and finishing the tour. But all and all I had a great time watching this video, i have to give you credit for the video and for being very patient and respectful to the tour guide that was complaining through out the whole tour, and I'm glad he wasn't around through out the whole video, and if people think I'm being to harsh on the old rastafarian oh well somebody had to say it, because I wouldn't of take it if it was me, and he had the balls to say people are not doing much when clearly they had alot of people working to make it better for everyone.

Mostly it was the women who were working though. The younger men were sitting around drinking.

I meet a girl from Livingston, I work in a shelter and she told me that she was Guatemala and she was black. It took me a long time to believe her until we looked up her home town on UA-cam. She was a riot....😉

ATTENTION!!! Is your heart right with God? We can not hide our sins for God. Jesus Christ loves you and He died for your sins. Repent and put your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Savior and you will be saved. Matthew 4:17 ...Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
