  • How to identify Retiboletus ornatipes, commonly called the ornate-stemmed bolete mushroom*. In the Southeastern US, this edible but not-too-tasty mushroom grows in association with oak and beech. The mushroom is bright yellow and often gets pretty large at 5" or more.
The ornate-stemmed bolete gets its name from a highly recognizable feature: prominent reticulation that runs far down the stem. Reticulation is a netted overlay of tissue on the stems of many boletes, including porcini and other Retiboletus species. But in the case of ornate-stemmed boletes, the reticulation goes to 11.
    * This specific mushroom left yellow stains on my fingers like Aureoboletus auriflammeus, which is kind of weird. I also note that "Retiboletus ornatipes" is a best-estimate name for the fancy-stalked yellow boletes in North Carolina and will probably end up being called something else. I am not sure why I added this caveat, it seems self-evident if you're interested in mycology. Whatever, I already wrote it, and I encourage you to correct or add any detail in the comments.

That was awesome!! I found these on my property for the first time this year. Trying to identify it the only thing close was Aureoboletus auriflammeus and I knew that was not right. Thank you for adding the yellow finger-staining! None of the books I have mention that for Retiboletus ornatipes. That's why we need your field guide. :)
