thats typical for physical sciences.. esp. for GRE.. No one in the science department really cares what you got on verbal unless you failed.. just meet the minimum score.. Think of it like this.. if I were to review a science publication with a ton of non-science fancy words I would probably reject the publication.. and tell the writer to dumb it down.. its not a literary paper.. its a science paper and get to the point with simple words..

The PhD student has a really really close to nativelike pronunciation. In just a few sentences she might fool a native into thinking she's American, and after speaking a bit longer I think most people would be able to tell she's not a native speaker but would have no idea where she's from. I'd probably assume she was from a Germanic language speaking country since it's most commonly people from those countries who achieve this level of accent.

During the interview, you mentioned your distinctive Asian accent. It's truly inspiring to witness students from diverse backgrounds, such as yours, enriching the academic community at Harvard. Accents are a wonderful testament to our individual experiences and cultural roots. Much like the young student leader during the Tiananmen Massacre who fervently declared, 'It's my duty!' with an authentic native accent, your own accent can similarly convey a genuine sense of authenticity and identity.

I agree with the man who said that in high school, you have to study things you don’t really like. I had to study very hard in high school to get average grades in subjects I was not interested in. Once in undergrad, that experience was still there but to a lesser degree. The classes in my major field of study were engaging. When completing postgraduate work, my level of ability was at it’s highest. Yet somehow, even though the work was demanding, it felt easier than the years before. I think that your level of passion (and ability) for the subject just makes the biggest difference!

To be able to speak English without an accent. You have to expose a child in early childhood to native English teacher. That is one of the reasons China pays English speaking expats to come particularly its young kids. I predict in a few years more and more Chinese students speak with minimal accent. Although I am afraid many would have Scottish, Canadian and Australian accent which may be more acceptable to Americans in general.

Once upon a time, it would have been exceptional to graduate from top US/UK universities because it almost guarantees landing a high paying job at a fortune 500 company. But we all know the trend is shifting, where future major corporations will be in China and Asia and will pay the biggest bucks on the planet for top talent. These corporations will hire local graduates to deal with their growing Asian market. In addition, the elite students are choosing to stay in Asia for concerns about hate, safety and gun violence. And you'll soon see Asian Universities moving fast up the rankings (Tsinghua, Beida, NUS, HKU, NTU etc). The perception of prestige in the brand of foreign U's is rapidly changing and CN-US de-coupling only accelerates this.

You notice the PHD girl tiled her head up and toward Chris when she was talking about her "strong asian accent"? yeah, that's called Boasting. She's looking for the "No way" type of responses back. I've seen that way too many times. Proud of her speaking skills of course. More people should work on bettering themselves, rather than keep using the excuse of "oh i can speak at least 2 languages. Americans can understand me regardless. I'm good enough."

Harvard admissions just love catering to the rich and powerful. It's gratifying, and I don't think these students are performing, to hear them acknowledge that every university is potentially an excellent school depending on the interests of the student. Harvard isn't a good school if it cannot complement your goals
