Disagree. You are prabably using it the old way with the old outlook in my witch is the reason why people hate it. Gmail is much more modern then most system.
Almost instant fix for you would be installing a 3rd party app called Gmail reversal tool and I'll bet a million to one you hate Gmail because of how it lands you in the sequence of emails but this 3rd party app has made a lot of fans for us out of clients that absolutely hated Gmail to start with. It will always keep your emails in line of newest to oldest or oldest to newest depending on how you prefer and you will never be dropped in the middle of any emails again

Gmail has the worst user interface of all email platforms on the planet…. HATE Gmail
The Gmail's UI does need significant improvements. So does Outlook 365.
