Jim McCann - The Rose of Tralee

Jim McCann was a member of The Dubliners from 1974 to 1979. Returning to his solo career he had a huge hit with the song ‘Grace’ and released an album of love songs by the same name. This is one of the songs taken from that album,.

I am lonely tonight for my rose of Tralee. That song is based on a true story. William was from the posh side of town and Mary was a poor girl who was a servant in his house. They fell in love but his family disappeared and made him join the army and go to,fight the war. We were a British colony back then. He was blinded by a shell and discharged but the day he returned to Tralee was the day of Mary's funeral. Now every August we have a festival in our town where girls from all over the world come to compete for the title Rose of Tralee
