I would imagine that many shoers would not go to these lengths to help a horse. Pauly is a real trooper and a very caring person.
Many would not! We and the horses are very lucky to have him. :-)
Paulie is lucky to have a rescue/ owner will to spend what it takes to help that moma to be....not all farrier/ trimmers are that lucky 😢 which is extremely sad for any horse to have to go threw so much pain all because of people not wanting to spend the money....🤬

I held my breath the whole time he was putting the clogs on her. She was very brave. You can just see how ouchie she is. Prayer they bring her some relief. God bless you all for what you do. It's got to be one hell of a tough job.

I am Very pleased to see Sugar Plum looking so much better. Abscesses in all four feet must have been unbearable. Now she's happy to pick up her feet and is clearly comfortable. ❤
Sad truth if Janis wasn't in foal she would have been put down or as other people call it (the last act of kindness) she is that bad and in so much pain i am a novice but still with her being unable to walk she is showing how much pain she is in. Thank you Pony Tales for doing what you can for her and that you can get her feet to where she is not in so much pain.
That is the very sad truth. On the plus side, she definitely is showing signs that she is feeling better and we hope to have an update out soon!

Omg....my heart is shattered for Janis! Can't stop crying, poor mare. I really hate people, probably why all my best friends are animals. Some of us want a horse so badly and can't get one. While others abuse, neglect and just plain forget about them in the pasture. I pray she finds enough relief so that she is a little more comfortable and delivers a healthy foal....
I’m glad Paulette was able to engineer the wooden clogs to make them work. That poor draft horse is in such bad shape and pregnant. Such patience to get the job done, so kudos to your farrier and the team.
Oh Paulie!! The work you do is so dangerous, those draft horses are so huge and you are not a big man so you must be incredibly strong to keep doing what you do!!! You continue to put yourself in very dangerous positions when you’re vulnerable to being kicked, knocked down, and seriously injured or even killed!!! Yet your dedication to these horses sees you showing up time after time to try to go the extra mile,to try one more thing that could possibly help to get them to the point where they are out of pain and are stable and comfortable enough to be able to not have to be euthanised but can go on to live and be happy for perhaps the first time in many years!!! You give them this gift Paulie through your skills and dedication and shear hard work and determination never to give up!!! You are an incredible man and an inspiration!!!! The draughts look so much better with a decent tail.
It's sad when the Amish hack them off instead of just cutting the tail hair so it could grow back. Tail docking is barbaric.
Dogs do too, it'd be nice if lopping - which is literally amputation - would be banned!

I really hope the clogs help poor Janice. She's been through so much! And many prayers that much thanks to Pony tails and Pauly for doing everything they can for Janice to help her get to foaling. And it's wonderful to see that Sugar Plum is abscess free! That's wonderful to hear!

“Adopted and returned” I hate those words. Be sure people, these horses have been through enough. They are sentient beings and not disposable.
It is bad, but let's not shame them. I don't know what happened in this case but usually no one can never be sure that their life won't ever change for the worse. It is a hard decision but when you realise and accept that you cannot provide for an animal properly, the only good option is to give them up to a good place.
You can lose your home, your job, your money, or your health. Sometimes people decline slowly and they have time to arrange things, sometimes there come an accident or a stroke that leaves you in a salad-state. And when you cannot even care for yourself how could you take care of others?
At least that poor horse had a home for that time and the shelter had a place for an other horse to save.
No one is every happy when a horse has to be returned, but we are happy that they return them rather than sell them off or stop caring for them. So while it's not ideal, it is better than the alternatives. Life happens. No one can control that and sometimes once an adopter gets them home, they just don't do well for any number of reasons.

Pauly is an absolute angel, poor Janice hopefully the clogs give her a bit of relief. I just don't understand the cruel acts some humans inflict on poor defenseless animals, there is a special place reserved in hell for Janice's prior owners.
I was in tears and scared all at the same time! In tears for Janice and fear for Pauley. Hopefully when she gets used to them the clogs give her relief. Pauley there are no words!

Pauly’s progress on Sugar Plum (I think that’s who it was with the 4 abscesses) speaks to his skill. It’s amazing how much better she looks. Janis is a mess for sure! but she is lucky that she is being tended to by Pauly! I’m praying for that poor girl. God bless the whole lot of you for doing the best you can in an impossible situation ❤ not only are you doing impossible things but you have to see the heartbreak every day. That is not easy!🥺❤
That was heart wrenching. You all are amazing. Whatever the outcome, you've gone above and beyond for Janis. I don't even know what to say for Pauly, just "THANK YOU" for your commitment to helping horses, for caring enough to go to these lengths. In all the years I spent working in show horse barns, with farriers who were artists at their profession, I've never seen anything like I just watched Pauly do. I hope and pray you can maintain that poor mare til she foals, and even after if it's at all possible so that she could be with her foal at least for a time.

Awww. Poor Janice. Her eyes show her pain. Some " humans" are a disgrace for letting her be so neglected, then get her bred. Shame on them.

We tried treats and grain. She was not interested. Petting her and talking softly to her helped a bit though.
And the end has the nail biter: will Paulie live through this, and will this poor mare get some relief. Praying. ok Paulie survives another dangerous situation.

I feel so bad for Janus but her foal is now maybe close to 10 months along.
The thing I don't understand about poor Janice's clogs is why the bottoms are smooth wood??? They have to be slippery as all get out. Isn't there a coating that could be applied to give them a little grip?? Maybe a piece of something relatively rough glued to the bottoms of the clogs? Well, heck ... what do they coat concrete steps with to make them non-slip for the general public?? Oh, I know!! Golf cleats!! 😂😂 At any rate, Pauly deserves a medal AND a free massage for sticking with the unsedated Janice!
She's on strict stall rest so won't be walking around the barn unless she needs care outside hense why they turned two stalls into one huge one just for her.

Team Ponytails and Pauley, Janice's situation is so heartbreaking. I commend all of you for working so hard to give her some comfort. It is such a hard situation for her, all of you, and Dr. Kristen. Hopefully the finish line is close and she will foal soon. It is just incredibly infuriating that her previous owner was such a heartless POS to have put her in this situation. This is the saddest thing that anybody could neglect/abuse a horse this much to allow this kind of suffering. It is obvious Janis is in so much pain. I appreciate all Pauly, the vets, and Horse Tales are doing to help Janis and all these horses. This is not a cheap endeavor. People need to realize the amount of money and time it takes to own, train, feed, condition, provide proper foot care, etc for horses. Horses can live 30+ years and so many people are not ready for that kind of commitment. Horses require constant upkeep and assessment to assure they are healthy and happy. To me Janis is the epitome of abuse and neglect. Not only to her, but her unborn baby. Hugs to all the people involved in the rehab and last act of kindness to these horses!
Pauly is without a doubt the most impressive farrier I’ve ever seen in my life! He’s just so amazing when it comes to getting the job done!

This episode is the first i think Ive actually cried at, lots of tears. I hope she delivers that foal earlier than expected and that the foal will be all fine.Thank God she hasn't got long to go.
You guys do such a great job with the vidoes. The only thing I would suggest is lije with penny's case with all the abcesses on all four of her feet is to show what thet looked like then and what they look like now.
You can always go back and watch the previous episodes too 😊 I remember her feet well! I would imagine it takes even longer to edit videos if they had to dig through the archives. I’ve been so happy about the more frequent videos, I‘d rather have it this way than perfectly edited TV-quality that takes longer to produce.

Is there a point where Janice could be induced, to get the foal safely born, and some of the extra weight off her forefeet?
I think they said on another Chanel that they don’t induce horses. They are premature if they are less than 310 days gestation. Of course, Pony Tales doesn’t know what date she was bred.

The look on Pauly’s face when he was looking at her hoof/how bad the bulging actually was from the coffin bone was heartbreaking. You could see pure panic in his eyes. Poor mare 😢

Paulie is a maestro of a farrier ... my wife and i sat watching him working with her feet it was a breathtaking video..on her way to the stocks we could feel her pain in each step she took..on her way back to the stall we could see a big difference subtle yet humongous ! Thankyou to all in pony tales and to paulie for doing everything you can so she can carry her foal full term and hopefully be around for a tiny bit to mother her foal... its a sad situation but you all are treating janis with compassion and respect .. and some sad day after her foal is born she will follow her namesake and be free of the earthly pain..as janis joplins last words were. Oh lord wont you buy me a mercedes benz my friends all drive porsches i must make amends worked hard all my lifetime no help from my friends oh lord wont you buy me a mercedes benz .. hahaha thats all folks .. through her baby janis will run with the wind once more...

There's not many farriers that would have the patience and skill and that's exactly what these desperately sore horses need. Good job all round, I hope she feels some relief once shes had a chance to settle and calm down
I think with the job that Pauly has to do being a Ferrier, you almost have to have some veterinary skills too. He’s more caring to these horses than I’ve seen from other farriers. The ones I’ve had experience with….years ago….seemed just there to make money, and didn’t really care about the horses like Pauly does. He deserves triple what he makes doing this. He has enormous heart for these horses! ❤️❤️❤️

I honestly think that Janis was much better on her front two with the clogs she even stood with her front fright foot at an angle coming out of the stocks. I think there will be such a difference once the rear ones are done too, and she will be used to the front ones by then..we know its only until she has her baby..if she's out if pain she might be able to nurse it for a while before the dreaded act is done. What a crap owner.. worked to death.. no proper hoof care..bred her knowing she couldn't work because she was lame so at least they'd get a foal out of her ..cruel bastards..I'm not usually a swearer..but this is just plain cruelty and neglect..I'm no horse expert but for the coffin bone to be pushing out means that poor horse has been Iving in absolute AGONY for ages..Sugarplum you little Rockstar !! No abcesses now !! You go, girl.. Daphne.. you're a sweat girl with more cruel and neglectful owners.. but hopefully, these new shoes will help you too.. Fred is a sweetheart..just badly overgrown hooves, but not anymore!! Sweet boy.. that yearling draft sold because he has only one decended testicle.. you lucky boy..no being worked to desth for you..!! A quick snip, and you'll be finding a good home where you'll be loved.. I love seeing Nate, too.. encouraging Cindy to do a bit of tractor work😂.. Poor Janice is such an ethical dilemma. It must hurt to see her hurting so bad, there's just no easy answer here. In the end you've just got to do the best you can. People suck.

That stock needs more reinforcement, please. Every time a draft goes in and it creaks, I fear it's going to collapse with poor Paul under it.
I had an OTT that was so stressed from his racing days. I did a lot of research on supplements to help him with it. I ended up giving him magnesium in his feed. The first dose I gave was more than the recommended amount but I wanted for it to make a difference for him asap. It made an absolutely huge amazing difference to him. He was so relaxed and chilled out. A completely different boy. I stuck to the correct dosing after the first and only used it for a few months to help him relax so he could understand that he was OK. He became such a good boy that I was able to put complete beginners on him, took him to shows etc. Magnesium has been proven to work on animals and the human animal. Maybe that is something that you could look into to help rescues to be OK with all of the new things in their lives. Just my thought😊

Yay!!! That's awesome about Sugar Plum! Which Polly is a great foot dr... Her feet look amazing...and a big improvement with her letting him pick up her foot!
I hope that Janice will walk better with those clogs and it is not far till she foals and i think that when she foals her hoofs will get better as my friends mare went like Janice did after she was bred and it was from the hormones from being in foal and after she had her foal her hoofs would not hurt her and she was worth her weight in gold and that is why she had clogs on her feet when she was in foal and her foals never had that problem she did it was never passed on to her fillys and her foals was bought by others because of how good she was at working cattle and rounding up wild horses on my friends farm and the mare could not be ridden because of a injured leg from going down a rabbit hole when she was in her paddock
Well from the X-rays it seems that the entire coffin bone is not only disintegrating but also pushing through the bottom of the hoof. It's like all the bones in your foot are not only disappearing but also pushing out of your heal. The clogs are to give support and stability until she can have her foal
Sadly there is no hope of recovery for her feet. The bone is disappearing so once she foals and gets too much pain she will have to be given the last act of kindness. It's a heartbreaking situation to be in.
I dont know what to say.... other than Pauly is an huge angel in chaps. He does magic whit the horses feet. Im happy for Janice, but Im soo angry of her previous owners. They must have know that the coffinbone was giving her this pain and STILL breed on here! I hope karma gets them. She is a gentle soul and so much in pain. Thank you Pony tail and Pouly. Love you all for your work.

You can’t blame the horse for acting like that , her freaking feet hurt!
Are you going to look for an adoptive mother for Janice’s foal so that her pain can be ended sooner? Or is the hope that she will be less painful once she has foaled and is a little lighter?
We are hopeful to keep her comfortable enough where she can nurse her foal and losing the baby weight should definitely help her. Obviously anything can go wrong during foaling though, so we just have to be prepared for anything. Praying everything goes well for her for the first time in her life.

Have you guys tried to use a flavored salt lick treat for these difficult to handle horses when you have to seal with their feet? Give it to them when you need them to be still, remove when they move? Works well
Yes, they are brilliant and I use one for my abused Irish Cob when the farrier does him. Steve Young uses them for difficult cases . I actually thought the same. I'm sure Janis is in so much pain that it probably wouldn't work with her but who know, worth a try
We have tried the licks. They have never worked.

My heart breaks for Janis. I think the clogs might be an improvement? She's so accustomed to compensating for every painful step that it looked like she was trying to figure out just how to walk in the clogs more than trying to reduce the pain. There's only so much that can be done to limit her pain, but I commend you all for your efforts. It's hard to watch as it reminds me of going through it with my mare.
