  • In this video we will go over how to add Google Home to Samsung SmartThings as smart devices so that SmartThings can actually make Google Speak. This NEW method works even with SmartThings EDGE Drivers. Setting up this capability is a big game changer for your home automation rules, and can really add another dimension to SmartThings.
This will be accomplished by installing and setting up cast-web-api, which can be installed on several different devices such as raspberry pi, Windows, Mac, Linux, and even Android devices! For this video I will be going over how to install on a raspberry pi, but setup and automation tips and tricks are the same no matter where cast-web-api is installed.

How do you use Google Home announcements in your automations? Let me know below!

You don't have to do that anymore. Google sees SmartThing's 'Virtual switches' which from SmartThings you can activate.
That allows me to trigger an ST virtual switch that in turn, activates a Google routine. For example...
A Zwave smart plug that detects when the washer's power drops below a set point.
Triggers an Automation in ST to alert my phone that Laundry is Finished, as well as flip a virtual switch.
Have a Google routine setup that when that Virtual switch is flipped it triggers a routine to broadcast "Laundry is Finished," on all or any Google home speakers.
This also allows for ST to control devices on Google Home that aren't supported on ST like my Deebot Vacuum cleaner.
The only drawback now is there's Virtual switches in both Google Home, and ST. But you can easily stash them in a separate room.

Thanks for the tip and examples! I wasn't sure if that was rolled out to everyone or not yet.
There are a few more drawbacks that people will want to consider when comparing the two:
      - SmartThings has a device limit of 200 devices, and I don't believe there is a way to bypass that. While you can use the vEdge creator to make more virtual devices past the limit, the virtual devices count towards the max limit for physical devices. So if you have 175 devices and 35 virtual devices you aren't able to add any additional physical devices, even though you only have 175.
      - Having the automations partially triggered from Google Home means that you'll have multiple points to troubleshoot and configure when dealing with automations. Not the end of the world but I do like to keep as much of my home automation control in one place, makes things easier over all.
      - Setting up routines within the Google home app can be a bit tedious compared to a web based automation tool such as sharptools. If you have to setup 15+ automations just for notifications that could be cumbersome.
I do like that with triggering the audible notification from a Google automation that it wont interrupt audio playback, but I'm at my device limit already so don't really have a choice personally lol

Is the smartthings hub, device running cast manager, and google home devices on the same network?

@@BeardedTechGuy, thanks for you reply! I got the device running cast manager (Raspberry) now connected with a cable and got connected to cast-web-API.
The next step, add Google Home. ST doesn't find the Google device.
