How OFF-ROAD capable is the 2020 Kia Telluride AWD?

- the 2020 Telluride is here and Kia has made a big splash into the 3-row SUV segment. One thing that Kia has really marketed in their advertisements for the 2020 Telluride is it's sophisticated AWD system. Come take a ride through Telluride, CO with us as we put the Telluride through it's on-road and off-road paces.

I'm seriously considering a Telluride because of your videos.
That really means a lot Steve! It was pretty spectacular!
Baahahahaha...
i guess I am kind of off topic but do anyone know a good website to watch newly released series online ?
@Anakin Brentley I watch on FlixZone. You can find it on google =)
@Malachi Diego Definitely, I have been using Flixzone for since march myself :)
I love my Telluride EX trim~!!! Worth every penny~~~~~
Thanks for sharing that from your actual ownership.
congrats and enjoy it!
telluride having 4x4 low and high
This video is awesome. I don't understand reading the comments and seeing so many people saying that this is not off road and that any sedan can do this... Bro, I dare you to do this with your sedan and I assure you that 98% of the people will get stuck. Those muddy roads are pure evil, your Camry or Civic will slip and get stuck not to mention that water hole he hit in one part of the video. If you want to climb mountains and drive over rocks, go get a 90k Land Cruiser... I think Kia is talking and showing serious business here, this SUV will became an American classic. Great review, I've been binge watching your channel for the last 2 weeks and I'm addicted hahaha. Keep the hard work.
Nice too see both of you away from Florida.. hitting the big time Raiti..your the best and well deserved..
Thanks for letting me share this whole journey with you!
@@RaitisRides I enjoy you and what you do Raiti...your the best my friend.
I think the Telluride is a home run. Love that color. It's not in your face but subtle enough to be different. For some reason the front looks like an Escalade at certain angles. It was great seeing that thing go through the mud.
Not in big kia of cerritos dealer i think.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and share your input!
Wow raiti, 49k subscribers now and going strong. I still remember when you were still teaching at ridgewood high and were only at 1,000 subscribers. Now we you made it here. I would not be surprised when you make it to 100k subscribers. Go get that UA-cam play button, you deserve it.
Hi Alex! It truly is a dream come true for me! Thank you so much for being part of it and letting me share it with you! I miss you bud!
he will be at 1mil now within a year i bet
You might want to mention that the road from Gareway to Telluride goes from an elevation of circa 4600 to 8700 feet above sea level. The effect on performance of the NA V6 is about the same as filling the vehicle with a load of NFL linebackers compared to driving in Florida. OF course, skeptics will point out that the dirt road you drove wasn't Hell's Gate in Moab, UT, a hundred miles or so from where you started and where KIA filmed their well known Sorento commercial. But it was a great demonstration of the worst conditions 90% or more Telluride owners will encounter. For a vehicle not meant for rock climbing, it acquitted itself quite well.
I live in the Puget Sound region and own a Kia Sorento. Essentially the same AWD system as the Telluride without the various user controlled AWD settings (other than a 50/50 torque split for getting out of messy conditions). It's been great for trips from the island where we live to skiing in the Cascade mountains. Only moderately challenging for the most part with mostly plowed roads. But last month we had the biggest snow storm in the Puget Sound in 40 years. Getting from the road to our house about 500 feet higher up a long driveway covered by a foot of snow was something of a challenge and the Sorento dug in and conquered it without an issue on all season tires. Meanwhile several of my neighbors left their SUV's parked beside the road below. (I was proud of her. :) )
Journalist reviews, sales, and waiting lists for the Telluride have largely eliminated the typical "Yeah, but it's a KIA" comments. They've been replaced by well deserved comments along the lines of "Yeah, and it's a KIA!" :)
Thanks for sharing that great information! I really appreciate the detailed comment! You made some excellent points!
Spill the beans. What were the SUVs parked at the bottom of the hill . . . .
Thanks Stephen for the information, fascinating. We often forget vehicles are tools that must always remain functional to our environment under the skin, it's a bonus when they are stylish just like this Telluride. We have similar challenges to a much lesser degree, I work in the city at sea level and home is rugged rural high mountains 1150 feet above sea level - currently commuting with 2015 Kia Grand Sedona on all season tyres - a truly small heaven for family transport.
As much as I loved my Cadenza, I stepped up and traded for the 2020 Telluride EX and love It!
Hi Don! Congrats on your new Telluride! It is an awesome SUV!
Legendary video. Doing the tests nobody else does
Thanks for saying that! You are so awesome!
Every sedan can go with this road
Thanks for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
بجد إيش رأيك عنه انت عجبني كثير يكفي وسييع جدا و فخم من الخارج و الداخل
You're right it's a dirt road no heavy mud or water it was checked to make sure it wouldn't need actual 4wd not awd to make it and the guys are amping up easy 4wd terrain
@@RaitisRides tell your subscribers it's just awd not 4wd
It will get stuck on a steep incline of 4 inches of unplowed snow
I can tell u ride on flat roads a lot. This vehicle is nice but will only get so far off the shoulder of the road you were on before getting stuck.
Man, what an awesome experience, the Telluride did awesome IMO, it should be a hit for KIA. Great stuff Joe
You are so very right! I am glad that I could share it with you!
They’re coming out with an Off road capable edition. I think X line pro
Great Job Guy's Good to see you out side Florida still at this price point Not to bad. Ha great to see the Man behind the Camera. 💪💪🎥👊👊🎬
Thanks Armando for letting us share this with you!
Off road? Where? I did not see any difficult track.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and perspective, I appreciate you watching!
Juha Juonio ; The Telluride is not made for wheel articulation rock crawling. It’s not a Jeep Rubicon Wrangler. What Joe did was show you over and above what the average person will do in a Telluride. Can it do even more? Sure it can but that was not the intended purpose of the video.
lol, no doubt, I could easily have driven this road in my lowered '96 Civic.
You just try and drive on those clay roads, seriously slick, been stuck on these exact roads many times in full blown 4x4 trucks!
Wow that was some serious task Telluride was made to perform. I have no doubt that Kia Soul will ever sweat here as well.
Thanks for letting me share it with you!
I really like this SUV. Tons of features for the money. It favors a GM product from the front. Super refined. I love these videos! Edited just heard you mention it's being built in Georgia! Niiiice!
Thanks for letting me share it with you!
Couple quick observations as I watch this almost 25 minute video. The sound dropped down at around the 2:20 mark faster than that 8 speed automatic Joe. Just a heads up. Also, the Honda Passport is not a competitor for the Telluride because the Honda has no 3rd row of seats. Only the Pilot is competition from Honda. Thank you for doing a review on one of the most interesting “cars” of 2019.
Also, I like your different (off-road) take on the Telluride. Everyone and their Mother has done a review of this SUV. We didn’t need another one. Ok back to the video...
So I just finished the whole video. That was a fast 25 minutes! That was fun! Romping thru clay/mud/water/rocks/creeks. I feel like you only scratched the surface of what this thing can do.....and all accomplished on street tires! Now that’s impressive! I’m glad that KIA went all in making this new entry into a very crowded and extremely competitive market. At the moment America has an unquenchable thirst (pun intended) for big, powerful SUV’s. Gas as we speak is rapidly increasing in price. We are back to $4.00/gallon at many gas stations here in NJ. At what price point does this put the brakes on the sale of large SUV’s?? The dealerships in my area sell everyone that hits the lot. I do not see any mark ups over MSRP but there is no dealing on these things either. You pay MSRP or someone else will later that day. Princeton NJ reporting in sir.
Awesome video, I think the telluride is the best full size suv especially when you consider a fully loaded one is under 50 grand, it out classes anything in its class, it’s very luxurious, it even has cooled rear seats. Plus the warranty can’t be beat
Thanks Edward for the compliment and I totally agree with you!
although we wont be seeing wet mud or snow on a daily basis
at least we know that the Telluride is a capable off roader
It really performed well!
Kia is really sending everybody out there to review this vehicle. I wouldn't even know this vehicle existed.
It's great because they understand the power of UA-cam!
Another great review, going on the dirt really added to it, especially your reactions from being out of your comfort zone. The diversity of the content of your videos has increased, from race cars in St. Pete, to drag car Mustangs, hot hatches, trucks, and soccer-mom SUVs. I'll never buy a SUV or a truck but I'm still drawn to watching your videos of them because your enthusiasm for what you are doing comes through and it makes it interesting. It's good that "Big Guns" is getting in on the act, you guys were starting to get like Penn and Teller. JK, keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for saying that! I really appreciate your support! I truly do love types of vehicles and love to share my passion for anything with an engine with you! I am glad that you are here!
Awesome video!!
Cristho Sanchez thanks 🙏🏻
As a 32 year member of the army most in the guard, we just call that a dirt road & I once broke a alternator bracket getting down in muddy conditions and the mechanics were pissed cause they knew we abused the hummv 😎
Thanks Ben for sharing that back story on yourself!
cool trip joe and tom my sister lives out there just moved I might drive the armada out there this summer
elvis 1 it would be a crazy adventure!
With all the tech in this car at it's price point i wonder if KIA is taking a loss. This vehicle surpasses even some german brands. I hope they keep the price like this because I'm planning on BUYING one in 2023 when my current lease is over.
Fabulous review, rivetting drive.
Thanks Linda for letting me share it with you!
Tell us what you think of the engine sound. On the video the revs came off sounding a little like a 4 banger, I know its a V6.
It actually sounded pretty good. I think that is the perception of the camera.
Too bad! Black Bear Pass is probably closed this time of the year. That pass scares the hell out of most who take it.. Kia is really becoming a solid manufacturer of autos. Joe you might reach 100,000 subs soon!!
Thanks George for your very good points! I really appreciate you watching and being part of the family. It's going to happen!
The only thing I zonk is the name of it! Great video!
Thanks for the compliment!
Love this video......you definitely need to do more on road/off-road reviews like this
That looked totally fun
It was a total blast!
Congrats on making it to the big leagues, Joe! You definitely deserve it. How does this compare to the XC90 in both performance and fit/finish?
Thanks Brad! That really means a lot and truly is a dream come true. This Telluride would surprise you parked next to a XC90. I need to get a review done on one of the those!
Alright,
I am seriously looking to buy a car.
Here is my selection so for:
Volvo xc90 r design, ford explorer sport and now the Telluride.
Any thoughts guys?
Looks like a good ride. I Think it will appeal more to the masses than lets say the Honda Passport (which I own). I say that because most people don't need more offroad capability or performance, but they'll want more luxury. I think Kia/Hyundai marketing should really really really focus on the value of the creature comforts and luxuries while making a point that the Telluride/Palisade are compliant offroad. The off road capabilities don't look too bad, at least on paper. Crawl ratio is extremely important, I hang out with alot of Subaru guys, and that's going to be their major weakness, especially the newer ones with the CVT. The Subaru CVT crawl ratio's are in the 13 to 14's. Those crawl ratio's aren't bad, their actually average. A good crawl ratio for a traditional automatic transmission is around 16:1. The Kia Telluride has a 1st gear ratio 4.81 and axle ratio 3.65. Calculating crawl ratio is simply multiplying the two numbers. If a vehicle has a transfer case, multiply that in too. The crawl ratio in the Hyundai is at a healthy 17.56:1. This is above average! Ground Clearance at 8.0" isn't too shabby, but it doesn't look like their much space in the wheel wells. I'd be worried you wouldn't be able to put tires 2 inches taller on this thing. Up sizing tires is typical business to make a vehicle more offroad capable, let's say you go 2 inches taller, this effectively gives the vehicle a 1 inch lift. The telluride comes with 245/60R18 which is a 29.6" tire. Comparing the Telluride to a Honda Passport, the Passport has more room in the wheel well. I've personally mounted 31.6" tires on my Passport and having 9.1" of ground clearance is a good place to be on the trails. Now speaking of the Honda Passport (a vehicle that I purchased after trading in my 2015 Subaru Forester XT) I have a crawl ratio of 20.4:1, and to further increase capabilities, I have a rear LSD/Locker. Just a week ago, I crawled up this very difficult offroad obstacle called "Kramer's Arch" (check out my channel, to see it happen).
Back to my main point of this Post. THE KIA TELLURIDE IS IMPRESSIVE because it offers so much luxury and value for the price you pay! Kia's offroad capabilities aren't impressive, but they're above average and compliant.
Thanks for sharing that great input and perspective!
Saw Tom and thought he was Ryan Huck from extreme terrain at first and that yall were doing a co-video together! But it was just Tom😂cool to finally see the face behind the camera tho.
Thanks for letting me hare the guy behind the camera with you!
I NEED THIS. Maybe I'll trade in my Cadenza for an SX model Telluride.....I love my Cadenza so much though :'(
Thanks for your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
I have a 17 cadenza sxL and I love it. I rebadged mine and I still get ppl asking what kind of car it is. But now I want the Telluride. Why can't I just have both?!?! Oh yeah, because I can't afford to. Lol
@@nphillips81 I just got hit by a truck while riding my motorcycle on Tuesday, unfortunately I won't be driving my Cadenza anytime soon😅, glad that so many people are loving new Kia's.
Kia just took a big leap 😂 pretty decent for a suv
AGREED!
Great video, and motivating. But, I was disappointed your "off roading" was just a slick, smooth muddy road. I would love to hear how it handles in gravel, sand, articulated, and rocky trails.
We had to stick to a course plus it just got done pouring! I appreciate your feedback!
OurBusinessHero I want to see it rock crawling next to a lifted wrangler with some 37’s on it.
The first camera angle makes it look like you’re going down a very long hill. I’m not a fan of Kia but nice video. 🇺🇸👍🏻👍🏻
L S I totally see that! I think we might of been! Lol
Should I trade an Evo X for this SUV? need inputs... thanks
Has your lifestyle changed? Kind of comparing apples to oranges.
Well family has grown and also want to get a vehicle to be able to haul things when I get a house....yet I want to hold on to the Evo because that have stopped making them
Is it a final edition then? You’d be stupid to get rid of that anytime soon
Amazing you didn't miss a beat (Cattle notwithstanding)
Dude, how you gonna' have a video on driving dirty, and not freaking show it driving from the outside? Just you ramblin' on from the inside. Thumb down.
Im so undecided between this and the Twin Turbo Ford Flex, not alot of people like the Flex but i live in Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA and the flex is pretty popular here because of its size and spacious interior. But its interior is now very outdated.
Jose Luis Ruiz Ford flex reminds me of a hearse. Don’t get it. Get anything over it and it’s a Ford. Stay away from crappy Americans cars
@@kbk011 yeah, everyone makes fun of it but its basically a station wagon with an SUV type shape. Its unique but not everyone will like it. Lets hope the 2021 Telluride gets a twin turbo V6 this time, because i really like that Telluride but the horse power it has is concerning to me. That HP has to be able to pull its own weight, the weight of the car, the possible max wait of its passengers and anything that may be pulled in its cargo area. For me i dont care about the fuel efficiency, i care more about performance, This is where a Twin Turbo V6 or better yet a powerful V8 with over 330HP would work well with it. Design wise though this Telluride is Gorgeous!!!!!!
You need to go take one of these for a spin!
I am not the biggest fan of the Flex. I am actually surprised Ford still makes them.
Those are some great points that you bring out!
can you leave it in normal mode when you lock awd? I heard snow mode starts it in 2nd gear which lowers the crawl ratio. so i want know if you can stay in 1st gear with and lock.
Otherwise awesome!! Still hitting that like button
Should have taken it off the dirt road! Car & Driver got theirs hung up on loose dirt during a Michigan to Seattle drive.
The Canadian version of Telluride gets mud & sand plus the snow terrain option. Is the landscape in Canada that much different than her in the US.
I am saddened that the road noise from having this camera (GoPro?) on the window.
What are your thoughts on the fully loaded 2019 Hyundai (Kia Parent Co.) Sante Fe vs the Kia Teluride?
I would go Telluride all day long. I love the exterior and interior a lot more.
The camera picks up more noise from the motion of the vehicle than what you actually hear in the cabin.
Do you feel it needs a turbo?
Do be honest even at the higher elevation not at all.
Question, How would the Telluride perform in Black Bear Pass or Imogene Pass?
I would be hesitant to take it on anything tougher than a 2-rated trail because it lacks a two speed transfer case and doesn't have much height with that long-wheelbase. Which is a shame, because I was really looking forward to it.
The locking center differential is nice, and it's going to be a comfortable ride for the highway and great in the snow. It can handle maintained county/forest service roads (as seen here). It's just not made to tackle technical terrain. For many prospective owners, that is enough, but the drivetrain isn't really setup to handle Imogene and Black Bear. You could consider taking it on Ophir Pass (low range is still nice on this trail though), but it's more suited for work like the Great Divide though.
I 'mo tell you off in my telluride. Did you see Airwolf there?
That would of been really cool!
Kia did it~~~ step up~~~~
AGREED!
Joe is this SUV better than our domestic brands?
In it's class I would take this over an Explorer or any of GM products.
How much does it cost?
Fully loaded around $43k
you didn't go off road though... would have been nice if you did since that was the title.
Uhm..... you should watch the video.
@@RaitisRides I did watch the video it was all asphalt and gravel roads
@@johnbbrose486 Mud is neither asphalt or gravel, so maybe you didn't watch the video!
@@wasichuwacanta7010 yes, i'm sure my eyes deceived me-move on people I'll watch some videos that actually test the vehicle off road. Thanks for the argument anyway! Sorry i wasted my time
@@johnbbrose486 For 99% of people, that WAS "off road"! This vehicle is not going to be marketed to people who need locking diffs, or solid axles and disconnecting sway bars; it's a soccer mom's people hauler, and a damn nice looking one at that! I can see people who like to go to National Parks, or camp (somewhat) off the beaten path, considering this, but it's not a Raptor, and won't compete with one. I get your point that it was referred to as "off road", but how many people with 4 WD ever go where Raiti just took it, which was off (normal) road?
Funny how any roads today with a little of mud on them are considered "Off-Roading", hell, I've done much worst in my 1969 Ramble American with 3 on the column. Nice SUV, but I'll buy the Honda Passport over this.
Thanks for your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
Are you kidding? That mud and water is not 30% of what a typical Midwestern drives through in the winter!
I’ve been to Telluride many times ... it’s not a Kia kind of place. Is there even a Kia dealership in Grand Junction? Pretty far away at best.
That is very true but Kia is changing that!
Like to know if video was sponsor supporter endorse by Kia?
Usually you start off immediately with an exterior walk around don’t like that change

What about the 😍Palisade, Joe?
Stay tuned because it is coming soon!
Yeah. Let’s see the palisade with those stupid 20’s go through that trail
I followed Big Guns!
He is the man!
The Pilot competes with the Telluride, not the Passport.
Thanks for your info! They both do.
@@RaitisRides i think his point is that the pilot and the telluride both have 3rd row seating where as the passport does not so it competes with the sorrento.
During your whole ride I kept thinking, what if you run into an on-coming vehicle? Do you draw for shortest straw to see who has to go down the ravine? Or do you just push the on-coming off the cliff? lol Did Kia make you sign a waiver before hand? FWIW, I understand Ms. Lori has now doubled her beneficiary benefits on your life insurance policy. Smart woman that Lori. lol Hope you carried the Wave with you to Colorado. Oh yeah, speaking of Waves, did you test drive the new AWD Vette in the canyons? Aha! Bet you didn't know GM was out there testing, did you? Hey, I'm not always asleep at the switch you know. lol Save the Wave.
It was so different then any other review that I had done before.Funny thing is there was anything we had to sign. think it is one of those things that if you go down the ravine you don't get invited back anymore. I must of just missed the AWD Vette. The last I heard GM can't get the C8 to stop looking like pretzels!
I think GM has made some progress in that it's now more like a Twizzler.
why does the title has off road in it?
I guess you didn't watch the video did you? Look at the thumbnail pic.
@@RaitisRidesso are you saying that this suv can only do that, you should have done some real off roading
Let the name reflect the player

OK naysayers, those roads are pure clay/slime on the way to Telluride CO, I've driven them before and just to be able to make it across this stretch is impressive, those clay roads are the most intense driving you can get into, great job Telluride! Until you've driven on wet Colorado/Utah red clay just keep your opinions to yourself you are only showing your regional ignorance.
Thanks for chiming in on this one!
Nice vehicle, scenic area, but to me Y'All seemed to over react to the dirt road and little drop off. And I'm from Kentucky not Colorado. Our hills ain't as big as what they have out their. Sorry if I come across cranky but it just hit me that way. And in case it matters no I can't claim to be any offroader.Maybe its perspective. Although I will admit that I wouldn't mind having a Telluride.
Thanks for your feedback! I am from Florida and we don't have anything like that besides speed bumps in a parking lot! lol
Hey Joe! What do ya say the next video is a pants off version.
For the right amount of money I can make that happen.
Looks amazing but totally worthless as an AWD or 4x4. This doesn't even have 4 low gearing...or downhill decent assist so you are dead coming down a steep hill on ice and snow... so don't think about driving this to ski resort in a real storm. Believe me I live on a mountain peak and 4 low has saved my life endless times. At least the palisade, pathfinder, forerunner, Taureg, etc. have either low gearing or downhill decent assist control. But most people see AWD and think they are good to go... but they are clueless. This is a beautiful vehicle though if you are just looking for a city street SUV that looks cool and runs well...
Thanks for sharing your great input and perspective on this one.
This is not exactly off road, this is more like dirt road I didn't see anything he went through that I couldn't take my truck through in 2 wheel drive.
Thanks for sharing your input and perspective! I appreciate you watching!
Kia is now hyundai. Seems like the guy next to the driver is falling asleep.
My Cadillac Seville could have run that no prob
I usually don't comment on these but the vehicle caught my eye & I was hoping for a True Test in the "wet mud" LOL. But maybe in someone else's video. Want to do a True test like maybe following me in my Range Rover & see how far it gets. THAT, would be a true test. Anyone can & Has put LED lights, heated & cooled seats, cameras, etc. in a vehicle & they should, it's 2019. Question is! IS it Functional or is it just another grocery getter shopping bag hauler for stay at home moms & guys that run to the hardware store for filters & a gallon of paint. I do not see where it will instill in me the confidence to pull off the highway to go around an accident in the snow or "wet mud". Can it pull a boat, jet skis, or a motorcycle up a hill or a 4wheeler through a path? Real Test Please, not just overly excited nonsensical comments & explanations of irrelevant "features" of overly used accessories that Everyone has. I Hope this helps.

Raiti's Rides thank you for your on point content as always it's enjoyable and informative
It could have 600 hp and there would still be people saying it’s underpowered. To me driving on flat ground and in the mountains I think it has enough power.
the middle between Germany and Japan
That's not even real off roading. Most vehicle would be able to travel down those roads with minor difficulty. Deep (not seriously deep) mud and moderate obstacles and moderate ruts would show if the Telluride can go off road. For the record I'm not hating on the Telluride since me and the wife actually like it a lot and went to our local dealership to check out. Awesome SUV, but I seriously doubt it can handle real off road conditions.
I think kimchee would stain those seats?
That is so very true. I rather go with the darker interior that they do have!
