Could You Pay The Price? - Arcane, a Video Something

  • I'm always late to the party, but Arcane was a party worth having. I'd say "Welcome to the Playground", but there are enough references in this video to snuggle a chicken into choking oblivion, which is starting to sound too much like one of those live - in all the wrong ways - mukbang videos, and I'm not THAT twisted.
    Anyway, Arcane is awesome and this video, hopefully, showed you a few reasons why, taught you something about life and, miraculously, made you breakfast. So you thank it for breakfast while I thank you for watching and then we both praise Riot and Fortiche for their work on this show... and the soundtrack for this video, which Riot also provided. If you want to listen some more, look up "Sessions: Diana" for, well, more.

      Yeah but still, Jayce (and presumably Caitlyn) made/ate those sandwiches, chose to leave them out, etc. Then you have to consider all of the steps that led to each ingredient being prepared and shipped and ultimately bought, delivered, and combined into the sandwich Powder ate. Technically everyone involved in making the food is partly to blame for the sandwiches even being there for Powder to find.

    99.9% follow you with the 0.01% being Heimerdinger who I think you're shortchanging. We see Vander and Silco eye the price tag for their ambition and decide it's too high. Heimer doesn't seem to know there was a cost until he looks down from his ivory tower at the rubble Jinx left and asks somewhat rhetorically "How did it come to this?" Now we're seeing him on a road to Damascus which meanders through The Lanes. Presumably when the furball gets there he will realize the price for his City of Progress continues to be paid on an installment plan by an underclass that's been getting increasingly resentful for 2 centuries.

    • @JohnnyValmaggia
      @JohnnyValmaggia  2 роки тому +16

      First of all, thanks for the thoughtful comment, quigs. Second, that's a nice take, because it also connects the price of ambition to the theme of class. My issue with Heim and the reason I say he comes across as mostly "magic = bad" with the sparse but worthy exceptions that are his care for his students (a lighter sentence for Jayce and an ear to listen for Viktor) is because that is all we see him do. We are told that he rules the city, but aside from his judging of Jayce, he is never again shown to have any control over what the council says or where the city directs its ambitions (he is even missing in some of their discussions to raid the Undercity). His own, personal ambition is also not a focus for the story and that made it so I never formed a connection between Heim's ambition and Piltover's progress. His speech to Jayce at the beginning of Episode 4 also painted a different picture for me - one of a brilliant mind, a philosopher, a thinker, a teacher who loves his students, but not necessarily a politician or leader - that role I assigned to Mel, who I view as much more business and progress oriented. And although he does lead in the beginning, I never felt he wanted to. This leaves me with three reasons why I may not have reached your same conclusion: 1) I did not get the impression that Heim's ambitions went further than his research and students; 2) I interpreted Heim having already asked himself the question before the show ever begins, which is why he feels comfortable in the knowledge that his students will achieve bigger contributions than he ever could; or 3) I'm just dumb, haha.
      Either way, Heim is the only character that left me wishing we could have had at least one more scene with. Picture Heim alone in his study, musing aloud to the bemused ears of his furry pet about how he is trying to and frustrated that he cannot find a way to help Viktor with his decease or both him and Jayce to more safely study their field. I feel like that would have made his character even more nuanced than it is now. Then again, you seem to be the one familiar with the lore of this universe, so if this scene would not be congruent with that, I would love to know. Again, thanks for the comment, quigs.

      @@JohnnyValmaggia Idk, that felt very intentional, Heimer's whole thing is his immortality leading him to always think almost solely in the future, and be way to disconnected to the present, he ends up blind to the inequalities and sufferings of the undercity in the civilization he helped create, he backs off and lets others do as they do as he seemingly nearly solely focuses on mentoring, with Victor he's sad over his near death but he doesn't challenge it, he just accepts it and try's to tell Victor and Jayce to accept it too.
      Which is what makes Ekko the perfect foil to him that will lead to growth in season 2, since Ekko is the character most focused on the present.

    The effort u have put in for this video is unreal. 22 minutes of pure facts about an already (in my opinion) 10/10 show. I’ve rewatched the show 5 full times - yet somehow I hadn’t realised even half of the links that u did. The entire idea of the ‘cogs playing their parts’ is so cool to think about. Love the analysis, especially the breakdown on Powder around 12:20. I disagree that Vi’s ambition is for the undercity, as she puts it to Vander, it’s so Powder can live a life where she’s not arbitrarily less than the topsiders. Not for Vi herself - although I think she wants the same but is jaded against it - but for Powder.

    What a phenomenal video. I only expected to learn something about Arcane, and I did learn a lot about Arcane, and that was fantastic, but also learned something about the people around me and myself, which is priceless. Thank you.
    Something that I've actually noticed during watching the show is that Silco's wants and needs directly contradict Jinx's wants and needs, and they both have to pay the price and actually constantly interfere with each other. Jinx interferes with Silco's wants and Silco inteferes with her needs, and they keep dancing that dance and amplifying each other. Silco doesn't realize it, but by putting his wants over what Jinx needs, he's directly making her mental instability worse, go AWOL and mess up his missions, and interestingly it's also what directly leads to Piltover wanting her captive in the first place, and I just think that's... Well. Horrible, but amazingly written.
    Either way, hope this is an okay addition, just an observation for the void. Thanks again for this absolutely spectacular video!

    Ok i have seen a lot of excellent videos essays but this is one of the best ones I’ve seen, possibly my favorite, and I think it’s all the better for having been made JUST NOW, after so many essays have already been made. You brought up points I haven’t seen anyone else being up, or if they have, they did not articulate them as clearly.
    One of the lines in this that haunts me is how Violet represents what it means to choose, and jinx represents what it means to suffer the consequences of choices. It’s even more chilling whe I step back and remember the show as a whole - Violet tries so hard to choose correctly and at every step, her choices are undone. Jinx never makes a conscious choice but because of extenuating circumstances and her ptsd, she ends up being the trigger to all manner of tragedies, many of which she wishes she’d never been involved in.
    Also I’m obsessed with how you glaze over all the visual parallels but still make the effort to quickly show them to us.

    @leodouskyron5671 2 роки тому +9

    Love what you did. I don’t agree that ambition is the main point because the series makes clear that there are many and ambition is not the main point of them. Morality (writ large as justice and small as honor), power (rulers of both cities control of knowledge to even the two magic/science powers and how to use it) and need/family (mostly in terms fictive kin and relationships but even moser so in learning what that is and how to live that). One could toss resources in there and arrogance.
    I think when Ekko says ‘people need more then to just survive - they need to live’ he gets it. Arrogance no. But a need to live that always was at the heart of it all. The undercity does not want to take over the upper city. The upper city does not want to rule the world. They want to learn to live a better life and not just survive as they are. But (so far) Ekko gets it in that you have to see the bigger picture. You have to do great things as you do good things. You have to heal and not just harm. You have to demand justice and accept no less for yourself.
    That is the path that they are (season 1) trying to fail and failing at. And it is in that failing that the tragic epic of Arcane works best. A broken orphan girl with mental issue in anger and desperation has the final say … walking the path that was put in front of her and the world burns….
    I am off topic but still loved what you did. Hope to see more from you. I

    All the characters in ARCANE are Greek Tragic Heros; they all have Hamartia (tjhe fatal flaw), go through peripeteia (reversal of circumstances), and reach anagnorisis in each's arc (discovering true nature of their own circumstances). People will talk about ARCANE's theme of duality as father/daughter, mentor/student, 'brotherhood'... and those are true but where the duality really intertwines is the dualities of Hamartia, Peripeteia and anagnorisis among the characters. Even supporting characters like Sky, Sevika, and Marcus have tragic hero arcs.

    Arcane is basically a series of people doing and saying the wrong things at the wrong places at the wrong time. And everyone suffers the consequences that might've been avoided had things gone slightly different. That's what makes it so frustratingly beautiful.

    I feel like one thing we never really get to see is how Powder lived as a kid. I always thought it was odd that she would fall in with Silco so fast. It just occurred to me that she may have planned to kill him and then never went through with it.

    What's especially tragic is that, if Powder didn't interfere, everyone would still be dead. Yes, Clagger opened the wall but Vi was losing and Vander was still tied down. There were still more bricks to kick in, more clasps to be undone and Vi was down for the count; they were dead either way.

    Perhaps you might like to look at the bottom right hand corner of your cog graphic and note that the teeth do not mesh but seemingly turn the gears. It might be a profound statement or a misunderstanding that we need to interact to keep the world turning.

    Ok but the one thing I’m wondering is why Jayce left the hex balls out there like that. He had a lot of unauthorized equipment and the hex stuff is super touchy so why didn’t he just hide them in a locked box or attic in case he might get caught?

    I think the theme was explicitly stated as "duality" by the creators but the overlapping multi-layered way they interpreted that theme really brings to life the interconnected nature of the characters motivations and responsibilities as you've described so well.

    Sevika didnt betray anyone, Vander betrayed her. He changed his way, he wasnt willing to fight anymore. And his will to fight for the cause was the reason Sevika followed him. When he changed paths, she changed sites. Just because Sevika doesnt blindly follow someone, doesnt mean she's a traitor. Thats just how Vi sees it.

    Arcane and Breaking Bad are both supreme tragedies, while in Arcane is hard to place the blame on any one person, in breaking bad you can easily blame Walt's ego for dragging things out

    If we accept the destruction of Jayce's apartment as the "inciting incident" from which all the following drama issues, then we can point to the two character choices that most directly led to that incident: Jayce's choice to carry out illegal experiments that involve/require highly volatile hex crystals (in his apartment no less), and Vi's choice to carry out a burglary in said apartment. Both actions are illegal and perhaps morally unjustified such that neither is more or less "wrong" from that perspective. But in playing the game of What Could Have Been, where I am allowed to change only one thing (i.e., one character's choice) in order to "fix" the events as shown, I would choose to eliminate Jayce's choice rather than Vi's. I freely admit, however, that this is only because I like Vi ten times more than I like Jayce, and if it's anyone's "ambitions" that I'd prefer to see squelched in order to save Powder from the trauma she endured, it is Jayce's.

      I think, there are two inciting incidents in the show. (If I got the definition of "inciting incident" right)
      It's Vander and Silco leading their rebellion over to bridge against Piltover.
      And Jayce and his mom meeting that mage guy in blizzard.

    Heimerdinger having 32 full minutes of screentime is the reason why I gave Arcane 9/10 instead of 10/10.

  • @Vizible21
    @Vizible21 8 місяців тому

    Saying Heimmerdinger is the fault why there's a Jinx is like saying Obamma is the reason why american's doesn't have a free healthcare. If there's anything we can learn from the real world is that no matter how powerful you are you can't change the world yourself.

  • @kevind3974
    @kevind3974 2 роки тому +3

    Why is himerdinger responsible for most of this
    Simple
    Because he failed everyone even the world at large by not doing his job
    He had almost 200 years to make sure that something like this would not happen. Instead he wasted that time playing professor and waxing poetic at the most prestigious, hardest to get into and toughf school in the world. He will say it was for our future to lead to progress. Then be willfully ingnorent of the fact that he leads the city thus he’s doing a piss poor job at it because he’s barely doing his actual job.
    Himerdinger needed to get kicked off the council because he needed to understand just how much he failed everyone. The truth needed to be shoved in his face or he would have just acted willfully ignorant and blamed others while not looking at himself.
    Himerdinger is the biggest villain of the story because it would never have happened if not for his actions or lack there of.
    This understanding is why I love Himerdingers cherictor. He’s pure ironony and something that could have been

    Yeah, Jinx is less a character and more an element of world-building. Makes the whole character a little boring to me, but whatever. It's not the only part of the show after all.

  • @rvio-zy1xf
    @rvio-zy1xf Рік тому

    I think what made Jinx such a powerful character is that it was her fault, and a lot of anti-hero stories today, or enemy stories justify the behavior because they were bullied or had a rough life. Arcane has a different message, that as cute and innocent as Powder was, her own actions are what created Jinx, and she knows it, hence the pain being amplified. Yes, Mylo gave her a tough time, but everyone else was very patient with her. I actually think this mimic's real life more accurately. It's not painting her as a victim, it's painting her as a tragedy based on bad choices, and fear.

    sometimes we need to fight tho.... I come from a country that was occupied for over 48 years, our people were oppressed and murdered by a bigger and more powerful country , Vander put his gloves down and stopped fighting but that meant the fact that Zauns people continued to be oppressed and poisoned, if it comes to Zaun then I agree with Silcos point of view...its just the means how he tried to receive the free nation of Zaun that were very questionable and radical if I am honest then if I see the last scene with Jinx nuking the council...in my opinion council had it coming.... they are responcible for Zaun and people in Zaun are oppressed and poisoned....it was only matter of time until someone rebels and kills council members

    Ok, lots of interesting thoughts about the ineresting themes in the show, but hasn't anyone thought Jinx being blamed for the outcome of the fight at Silco's hideout was a little... forced?
    I get the plot needs momentum and Jinx was already a character before her backstory was thought out. Yet, the motivation for Vi turning on Jinx was absurd. Fine, be resentful or disturbed later, just don't leave a child, of well intent, alone in an alley. You were already in a life or death situation; if she didn't do something, you would probably die anyway.
    Honestly, it was so comically shocking, that when Vi turns back to stop Silco, I imagined Vi thinking, "Bish wait, I'm dumb as Hell, lol XD!"
    I'm all on board for the Jinx-train. Maybe she'll just kill Vi later, and finish the job. Sincerly, fuck Vi.

    • @xCoatlicuex
      @xCoatlicuex 2 роки тому

      I found interesting how many people play gymnastic to excuse Jinx for being a "traumatized child" but Vi bing a even more traumatized child gets blamed for "don't take proper care of her sister" as if were Vi responsability being parentified as Powder mother, while being herself also a child who were strugling taking care of a bunch of childs and traumatized for the bridge masacre and having her parents murder. Just to then see all his friends gruesome murdered, his father figure kidnaped, tortured, mutated, she hersef being beaten to pulp,and all her hopes crushed by her sister
      Yes, Jinx screwed in Silco Hideout, and Vi taking a few stepts away so she could calm down and not harm her murderorus sister more was the right move. After that point while Jinx shows that she really didn't care for her family so much since she jumped to her new daddy right away, Vi wasn't nothing but plainly tortured for years. And sisnce all was related to Jinx who has been nothing but mean agaisnt Vi all the time I really don't know why should she want her back.
