  • In this video, I'll be demoing the Ryobi 18V Lithium Ion Pole Saw. This was just under $150 at Home Depot (it came with a battery and a charger). I'm pretty impressed with how well it cut. It did get stuck on a very dense poplar branch... but hey, it was a tough branch. :) I shot this with a GoPro on my head.

    I have this 18v Pole Saw and really like it. Much better than my old manual pole saws. Like others have mentioned, the proper way to use the pole saw for cutting down a branch involves 3 cuts. First cut is an undercut about 6" from the trunk, about 1/3 of the limb. Second cut is the normal overcut about 7" out, which you cut all the way through because the branch will break off at the undercut. Third and final cut is the finishing overcut to trim the branch right alongside the trunk. When I started using the 3 cut system, I stopped binding my saw. I don't use my Ryobi pole saw but maybe a couple times a year, but it is a tool I am glad I have.

    I am about to go buy a pole saw and this 'review' tells me the truth, and I appreciate this. Most 'reviewers' would probably have edited that 'stuck saw' segment.
    I can see that in using these, it is essential to wear a helmet and face shield, and that should be just common sense to keep in mind, wouldn't it?
    Thank you for showing this one in action,..I am certainly going to have a look at this Ryobi model when I go shopping tomorrow.

    Good info here, such a handy saw, and the extension is a great addition.

    I’ve had one of these for a couple of years, occasional use. Just watch that, like all chainsaws, the chain will stretch at first - keep it fairly taut. The bar oil tends to leak into the head so I either empty the reservoir after use or, when
    I’m being lazy, just keep it inverted in a bucket to catch the oil.

    Wear a helmet, work gloves, and safety glasses is a must. Safety boots and shin guards should be considered as well.

    I got one of these last year. love it. but it smoked the motor after a few uses. took it to a factory repair shop. they had it for several months waiting on parts. after complaining a bit Ryobi sent me a complete new set up. One thing I am not real liking is it is not real rigid when the extensions are installed

    Thanks for the demo, appreciate it. I think with one of these, plus a ladder, plus the persons height, we could get the job done.

    I wish ryobi could make a 2-in-1 pole saw so it can be converted to a mini chainsaw

    I bought the Ozito pole version a year ago and it cuts faster on the branches he is cutting on here so I won't be buying this one.

    Hey I was wondering does it need oil to work? I used this to cut my tree but, it stopped just as we were finishing.

    • @Matt_Bryant
      @Matt_Bryant  4 роки тому +1

      It takes a gas/oil mix. There's no 'separate' oil reservoir. Do you think the battery may have run out of juice? If that's the case, that's what they do - suddenly stop running. Thanks for watching. 👍

      Thanks so much for replying man I appreciate it! We used it for like an hour do you think the battery needs to be recharged? I was also wondering what the white tube thing that is near the blade. Do you know what that is?

    • @Matt_Bryant
      @Matt_Bryant  4 роки тому

      @@bittersweeter5882 Try recharging the battery for sure. They generally don't run for more than 30 min to 1 hr per charge. The white thing near the blade is for the chain oil reservoir. Make sure that has oil in it so the blade will spin smoothly. I should have mentioned that in my previous comment. At first I thought you meant engine oil. Sorry about that. Yes, chain oil for the blade, gas/oil mix for the engine. 🙂

    Safety first: never ever cut wood on the ground. When not if, the chain hits the ground going into the dirt it will quickly dull the chain. Even worse, cutting on the ground is known for hitting unseen rocks thus throwing and breaking chains; not fun.
    Are you wearing a helmet cam? If yes, mount the camera on a tripod. It is quite difficult focusing on what you are attempting to show us. Think about watching a movie where the camera is bouncing all over the place, it fast becomes very annoying and spatially disconcerting.

    Hmm but what about the 36v multi head thing? Or would it be cheaper to just buy a 36v brushcutter and the rest 18v.
    I belive you are meant to do a small cut underneath the branch as well?

    • @Matt_Bryant
      @Matt_Bryant  6 років тому +1

      I don't have any experience with the 36V. Sounds nice though... Yes, I should have made a cut underneath. I wasn't expecting the saw to get bound up like that. LOL Thanks for watching. :)

    9:09 a tutorial on how not to use this tool, they give you specific instructions for this cut to prevent this in the manual, I just got mine today haven't used it yet but I did read the book. LMAO.
