Hi guys I would recommend putting some timber or metal anchors behind your sleepers as over time that wall will continue too push out, in you time lapse you can see it’s already moved with the clay back fill. I would do it asap before you have too start all over again. Great too see your confidence and enthusiasm for new tasks
Came here to say something similar, that wall is clearly not strong enough. There's reasonably easy fixes; now is the time to get it right, as horrible as it sounds "deadman wall" may be a quick and easy option, however, that's rearly the recommended path to take. Good luck!
Should’ve put the sleepers on the inside of the posts otherwise you just have a few screws holding back the soil! Also need internal bracing to hold it all vertical!! Good effort though guys love the enthusiasm and progress.
Idea! It would be so cool if you installed an old container where the new sleepers are.. to create a hidden, underground room! It would do the same job of holding back the soil and you could grow grass on top! You could put bi-fold doors face ing downhill and have a hidden room or underground shed!
I have found sleeper steps more slippery than slabs and needing anti fungal cleaning a couple times a year, in spite of which still tend to be slippy when wet, but they do look lovely xx well done you grafters 😅
Sleepers are lovely. I built a big sleeper retaining wall myself…I did “filled” steps with pebbles/rocks because the wood is really slippy with moss and water etc. also doesn’t clean up as easy with say a pressure washer like slabs do
Have been following ye up from beginning of your journey, back from first camper van build on Facebook camper group few years back, i wasn't even been able to finish my camper while ye finished 5-6 😂 and traveled europe and usa! I work hard myself in mud, rain, digging and lifting last 17 years all by hand, so i know what mean beying knackered after hard work. Harry and Nicky its lovely to see young hard working couple fulfilling their dreams through the hard work, Nicky you work harder then most man nowadays 💪 keep up the good work and it will be all worth at the end! Regards Slovakian Peter from Ireland❤
Thinking the clever commentators could have advised you weeks ago .Chins up. It really is the weather that is hampering you.Keep going with the things you can do.🎖️🎉😀
really should be studying for my last Uni exam next week😭 but how the heck could I ever skip one of your videos! happy building :) ohh and so relatable with the cold and building breaks, at least the mud isn't as dirty when frozen🥳
Love seeing the videos. I feel tired for you that’s hard work but you’re doing great. I think we may have a theme though. Alfie’s boxers loved the orange ones. We need different colours each time Alfie is in the shot , could be the highlight of the build 🤣🤣
Another great vid! Happy new year guys! I would seriously consider thinking about a ramp instead of steps (or as well as) so you can get lawnmower, wheelbarrows etc up and down the garden easily when everything is finished. Your future gardening selves will thank you.
Fab video again. My experience of sleepers is they will very quickly rot and your retaining wall will slide. There are several UA-camrs in the landscaping game who dip the posts in treatment and the taper the mortar to prevent the posts from rotting! great to see you using DPM behind the sleepers to stop the constant submersion of water....remember the weather we have in the UK is not great :)
Happy New Year 🎉 I love your positive energy and can do attitude. Great you had the team out to help with this labour intensive job. Nicky your editing skills are so good making these videos enjoyable to watch. Have a great time skying. ❤
Looking great. Obviously, wood will rot eventually, but it's not exactly going to be next year. By the time they need replacing, you will have long finished your house and probably want a whole garden remodel too. You've done a fab job.
Very glad you're back! Hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year! I reckon rendering the wall and steps will be less slippy. Riddle - I definitely said Umbrella or Beach Towel before coming to the comments 😂😂 Anchor makes waaaay more sense 😆 Also, the graft youre putting in for this house is next level... the feeling you're going to have when its done will be truly amazing! What an epic project! Love your vision!
You guys are grafters! It’s been so cold this week, fair play for your determination and carrying on. BTW, I would go for patio steps, sleepers can get slippery so aren’t ideal really (although they look great).
In case you didn't know there are interlocking retaining bricks you can purchase that don't require cement I done mine with Marshalls interlocking pavers (Croft stone), but you can only go 1m high. I opted for interlocking because you don't need to worry about drainage, the gaps between the bricks naturally let the water flow out and it's cheaper than sleepers
Happy New Year Nicky & Harri! Hope you're feeling much better. The temperatures are hopefully on the rise tomorrow. I hope you've had time to wind down & look after yourselves. Take good care ❤x
I bought a house just before Christmas and it needs a full renovation (luckily doesn’t need an extension) and over Christmas the first job I did was to sort the garden out a bit and put a retaining wall in with sleepers and you honestly made it look easy! Definitely keeps you warm doing all that work which is a bonus during winter 😂 keep up the good work. house is coming along lovely!
Great episode cant beat it with a coffee nice to see alot of progress the fire is a good option you could get a drum to keep warm also great your getting help more hands mean faster progress but still take your time all the best
Yayy was waiting for this episode to pop up. What a week with the weather guys...when things fo wrong or take longer...like it did with myself last week...I repeated the same words as you Nicky I don't care anymore...lol. Keep up the good work, it's brilliant to show the down side as well as the upside.. true format of what you guys are achieving. Thank-you x
Been there done it.... jezz this brings back good and bad memories. Lucky for me my muck was dry and little clay so easier to move. Only one thing I noticed get a spirit back on your retaining walls, not sure if it was just in the editing but when you were back filling them, they defo looked to have shifted a good bit, and last thing you want is them to continue to lean forward and then collapse. Best of luck guys it gets easier as the weather improves trust me!!!
Cheers Andy, we’re glad we could take you back down memory lane! We can’t wait for the weather to get better, Winter is chipping away at us! We keep telling ourselves we’re through the worst of it though! 😅🤞🏻
Happy New Year! If you're concerned about the frost/snow/rain it's pretty cheap to buy old scaffolding tubes to make a basic frame around & above your foundations then just cover with tarpaulin, it won't be water proof but it will make a massive difference in helping keep the worst of the weather off so laying can take place. Hope you enjoy your holiday!
Hey guys, I would go with blocks for the stairs as we have sleeper stairs which are starting to degrade which means they all need replacing in the next few year 🫣
Good morning guys happy new year to you. Fantastic to see you back at it, what with the cold wet weather most people would have stayed in the warm. I’m so looking forward to seeing the block work starting to go up, have a great week roll on next Sunday.
Thanks Kevin, that’s why we’re so grateful we have our UA-cam audience to keep us accountable/ it makes us want to work through the worse weather! We’re so excited to get a start on the blockwork tomorrow 🥳
Hey guys. Enjoy your holiday. I know there’s a lot of concern in the comments about the retaining wall. Having done it and detailed it for other clients, I’d recommend 2 additional steps to make it more robust. 1. Pins/rods through the sleepers to join them together and not rely on the support posts behind. 2. (And most critical in my opinion) a French drain to the rear of the wall to stop a build up of water. Great content and looking forward to see the blocks being laid soon!
I'll add not edit , love the motivation and the design of the "Raised Terrace " 😅 sleepers last forever that's why their used on railway lines, You are amazing and all your mates that help are , is gona be stunning ❤
Hi guys, good to see you back on the grind. Oh to be your age and have the energy you have! Just wanted to say, we had a sleeper retaining wall built (on a much smaller scale than yours), and our contractor used road pins through the lower blocks to add extra strength when the clay got backfilled. Keep up the great work and hope you manage to get the blocks laid soon (supposed to become milder later this week!) - PS someone get Alfie some elastic or a belt for his trousers! 😂 x
Hi guys you are doing well, just don't know how you guys are doing that in this cold weather it's absolutely freezing cannot wait to see how it looks. WELL DONE💜
I noticed you look to be located in a beautiful woodlands, because of this I would go for block and rendered paved stairs. It will get very green and timber sleeper stairs with wear down with power washing over the years and be very slippery if not cleaned.
Hi Nicky &Harri lovely to see you again! You are all doing an amazing job ,you work so so hard!I can’t really see your dreams coming through well done guys love watching you guys!xxx❤
Good to see you guys back! Just a quick tip! Never hit your spirit level on anything as it can damage it and then not make it accurate! I learned this the hard way 🙈 Other than that, everything looks amazing!
Hope you guys had a great Christmas and New year. Loving the videos I look forward to seeing them every sunday. Having built sleeper steps in my own garden i would suggest some sort of anti slip on them as in this sort of weather they become very dangerous and slippery. Keep up yhe great work and looking forward to following the journey all the way to yhe conclusion. And thanks for the tip with DIY Kitchens we will be using them for our future project later in the year fantastic website and even better prices
Another awesome video. I don't know where you all get the energy from -:) Alfie's is a machine and his orange boxers are iconic, OF could be the next step lol hehe. Just an observation, but did the posts move as you were back filling the clay, I do hope they are able to take the weight. I would suggest building the steps out of blocks and maybe putting some extra support to stop the retaining wall tipping. Enjoy your ski trip.
I know that feeling of a digger costing too much. A big mess and all the dirt. Doing lots of hard work in horrible weather, feeling worn out and being hit with problem after problem as though you are not getting anywhere. I'd say the ground works stage is as worse as it gets and as you build up it gets better and better and the work you do each each day becomes more and more rewarding especially when you get on to doing joinery/carpentry. I have been there and done it and I am now in my new next house watching your videos psyching myself up for the biggest build I will attempt on my own which is a wrap around extension to double the size of my house and landscape a 200 sqm driveway all for a target of £100k.
Hahha you really get us. Wow that sounds like a huge undertaking but we’re sure you’re going to absolutely smash it - especially having done it before!!
Lads cutting out stumps you need to cut around the stump with a reciprocating saw, it makes it so easier, i took out 27 bush stumps some small some quite big, dig around and get that long blade in, it is quick and you get the big ones out good luck, Mine was to get through all the land to get the footings in on a Friends Conservatory
Sadly that sleeper wall will fail within a matter of weeks. It's started to bow as you back filled it. Maybe should have put some gabians in front it. I admire your determination to do it yourselves, males for great viewing 👍
Just my 2p, but have you considered putting the steps on the outside of that wall rather than cutting into the space of the top tier? I guess you'll be spending more time on the top tier so better to maximise the space. If/when you have kids, it will be easier to put a gate across the gap if the steps are built outwards. It will stop toddlers from launching themselves downhill.
I am worried the pressure in water build up against the sleepers will cause the wall to fail.....I hope all will be good and I guess time will tell. You have worked so hard in tough conditions I hope it is fine. Enjoy your holiday and great to have you back.
Happy new year to you both. As always a great video & whilst I understand your frustration at not being able to start your bricklaying you should still be very proud of yourselves as your still making incredible progress! I personally think I would go with stone steps as better in wet/cold weather less slippery & maybe more durable but wooden would be equally as lovely aesthetically so I would definitely approach it from the practicalities. Hope you have fun skiing & I look forward to next week’s video. ❤❤ ps: An anchor or fishing net?
Sleepers to the load side and would of been better with blocks on there belly’s! I dont want to knock it too much cause we all gotta learn and I know what it’s like to be keen and eager to get on with the main bits and budgets are always stretched! Enjoying the progress so far 👍🏻
Sleeper steps will get slippery, it looks like your garden doesn't get much light in winter making the problem worse. You could go down the route of framing the steps in sleepers and filling with ballast, cementing slabs down to make the steps. This way you have sleepers as risers and slabs as steps and maintaining the look. I would also consider putting some sort of capping on the top of your sleeper wall to help protect against the weather a little, always remember your walls are only as good as the hat you put on them.

They need to replicate what they did for the drive. Concrete blocks re bar etc
Should’ve put the sleepers on the inside of the posts otherwise you just have a few screws holding back the soil! Also need internal bracing to hold it all vertical!! Good effort though guys love the enthusiasm and progress.
I just came here to say the same 👍👍
Makes no difference, posts won't hold it anyway. At least they can unscrew the sleepers. Should have used gabians or similar
Liking the content, I hope the sleepers hold well, I’d recommend treating the end grain with something to try and prevent the rot 👍🏼
They should have added some drainage too
We do love the natural wood look, hence why we built the wall out of sleepers instead of brick like the front! 😅
Thanks
This is very generous, thank you so much!!!
I think the answer to the riddle is a fishing line, your doing a great job can't wait for the build ❤
Sleepers are lovely. I built a big sleeper retaining wall myself…I did “filled” steps with pebbles/rocks because the wood is really slippy with moss and water etc. also doesn’t clean up as easy with say a pressure washer like slabs do
Fair play. Big DIY project. All the best

Love seeing the videos. I feel tired for you that’s hard work but you’re doing great. I think we may have a theme though. Alfie’s boxers loved the orange ones. We need different colours each time Alfie is in the shot , could be the highlight of the build 🤣🤣
Hi Nicky , Hi Harri , nice to see you both back 😊😊😊

Happy new year! I worry about sleepers as they can rot and be eaten away 😢 excited for your extension!
Anchor is the answer to your riddle 😉
or a life preserver haha
It's a very very cold and wish you guys are keeping warm, go indoors lol😂 makes me freeze seeing you guys outside 😂
It’s soooo cold, although once we get moving we’re all good!🤣
I feel for Harry in his tee shirt, I use disposal heat pads and tuck them in my footwear hack. Enjoying your vlogs 😊@@NickyandHarri
Think the answer is anchor.

when it breaks just get a new one right!
Very glad you're back! Hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year!

It's great to have you guys back, I love how positive you are, and don't let anything get you down , keep up the good work.
Thank you Ian, it always feels great to get back to posting after a short break 😅
HappyNew Year I hope your keeping warm .It’s been very cold in Scotland.🏴👍👍👍
happy new year to you too!
loving all the vids, great work guys!
Thank you!❤️
An anchor is the answer to the riddle! Good effort working through all those roots and in this weather.
Could also be a fishing net or a sail.
I bought a house just before Christmas and it needs a full renovation (luckily doesn’t need an extension) and over Christmas the first job I did was to sort the garden out a bit and put a retaining wall in with sleepers and you honestly made it look easy! @ Thank you. Enjoy skiing the pair of you. Looking forward to the next episode. 👍🏽
Nicky, Harri , enjoyed the vlog you all work so hard 😊 enjoy your skiing 🎿 holiday 😊😊😊😊❤❤
Thank you!❤️❤️❤️
You should do sleepers with patio slabs in the middle and get a aurger to make it easier to dig the holes
Been there done it.... jezz this brings back good and bad memories. Lucky for me my muck was dry and little clay so easier to move. Boys are lucky to have you, you are grafter and you slso look like an awesome cook. My wife falls sort on both fronts 😂
Great to see you back, great work 👌 🙂
Thank you! Cheers!😅
I just had steps built with sleeper edge and porcalin tile, good mix of both I think
Another great video, looking forward to seeing the next!
Happy New Year!

Alfie’s new haircut looks smart, suits him.
4:58 Oh hello there! 🐁
hehe, it’s actually a little bird with a poorly wing 🥹
I’m guessing a (fishing)net 🎣 great content guys, love seeing you back after much earned holidays
Shame about the weather but great progress in the garden, look forward to seeing it when you've completed!
Happy 10 years guys🫶🏻
Good morning guys happy new year to you. Fantastic to see you back at it, what with the cold wet weather most people would have stayed in the warm. I’m so looking forward to seeing the block work starting to go up, have a great week roll on next Sunday.

I recommend using a reciprocal saw for tree roots
Having a good team builds the dream people👍. The camera work was very clear. Enjoy your sking break, but no leg breaks please🤗
Awh, thanks for this! 😅🙌🏻
A life-saving ring 👍
Omg been waiting for this , i was having withdrawal symptoms 😫
Will edit with what i think after watching 😂😂
Riddle : Anchor ⚓️
Love that 😂
I'll add not edit , love the motivation and the design of the "Raised Terrace " 😅
sleepers last forever that's why their used on railway lines,
You are amazing and all your mates that help are , is gona be stunning ❤
What an energetic bunch you all are! Think the paved stairs sound a treat, but I'm sure whatever you decide will look fab 👌
ah thank you! We appreciate you!
Can’t wait: at work atm: looking forward to watching tonight….xxxx
Woohoooo! Enjoy your day!
Amasing video. Keep going !
Milujem vaše video , prajem všetko dobré, aby sa vám darilo vo vašej praci❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sorry it’s the practical building surveyor in me!
This sounds perfect, I think that is what we will be doing!

It’s felt SOOOO long!
Happy Sunday guys ❤
Happy Sunday ❤️😋
Such hard workers... ❤.. well done guys
Ah thank you!🥹
I marvel at how much HARD manual labor you all do in one day. When you are about 50, you'll probably look back on this and marvel too!

Another awesome video. I don't know where you all get the energy from -:) Alfie's is a machine and his orange boxers are iconic, OF could be the next step lol hehe. Happy new year guys! Excited to watch your progress this year! 😊
happy new year!!

Being waiting for your video since morning.
Happy New year to you too! Aw, we’re glad you’ve been looking forward to it 🥰
Loving the progress guys. I wouldn’t do sleeper steps. They get very slippy when wet and mossy. Or in the frost. Speaking from experience!

Anchor ⚓️ for riddle ❤
congrats on 60k subs :D happy new year to you both! wishing you all the best for year to come!

For the timber sleepers retaining wall needed to put deadman's support so all the weight doesn't sit against the posts.
beavers must behave different in the UK lol, great vid
Happy new year to you both. As always a great video & whilst I understand your frustration at not being able to start your bricklaying you should still be very proud of yourselves as your still making incredible progress! Hope you have fun skiing & I look forward to next week’s video. ❤❤ ps: An anchor or fishing net?
My heroes! Block and render please. And very best wishes to you.
Yess that could be beautiful - I think we might actually do exactly that with the slabs as steps!!
Two friends have sleeper steps both have fallen on them during the rain and winter months 🙈
Oh gawd!!
Amazing project just subbed. Well done guys
I'd use some nice porcelain for the steps.
groud works always take time.
