My oldest brother bought himself a brand new 1970 Chevelle SS 396 L-78 option (375 HP) that was Forrest Green with the White Seats (black carpet / black door panels) with Stripe Delete and the Domed Hood option back in 1970. Kind of a sleeper actually without the Cowl Hood. That was back then, and probably is still today one of my all-time favorite vehicles. His had a 4 speed Muncie which is notorious for having sloppy linkage. At the time my brother was still in the Marine Corp at the time, stationed in Vietnam and then he came home stateside to Camp Pendleton , so it was driven very little as we live in Texas. The crazy thing is my brother wanted me to start it up for him at least once a week to keep the battery charged. I was in second grade at the time:). Not kidding. How many 8 year olds get to start up an L-78 with a stick shift once, much less than starting it up 1-2 times a week for almost three years??? Luckily I never had a mishap with the clutch and put it through the garage wall...:) Both he and I were lucky I suppose. BTW - Everyone talks about the LS-6 when they speak about Chevelle's....the L-78 was underrated at 375 hp. What an incredible car! I still think about it.

With so few made, it’s amazing how these LS6 SS’s keep popping up. I’m not educated about which plants made how many of these cars (Baltimore, Atlanta, etc. With 4,475 made overall, they’ve survived pretty well. My friend had an LS6 back in the 80’s with a column shift turbo 400 bench seat that he used as a daily driver back then. This one shown today needs some work, and some OEM parts, (which is a safari in itself😂), but the bones are great, and it’s a real homey. My guess is it was a bench seat car, and purchased to go racing.
they only built 212 with the ls 6 454 and 6 with the ls 7 427 and it is not a bbc it is a small block ls block . LS has never built a bbc in history and a LS engine is not a chevy engine it is a GM racing division engine this is y u can only get it as a crate engine till 94 but they did start with a ss with a bbc 454 in it then pulled it out and put the ls in it that is y it has the same code it is kinda like a yenko aftermarket build not true factory build plus u will never see a true ls car on the net before 94 they are worth way to much. last time i heard they have less then 200 left in the world
My friends older brother had a 70' 396 in 1975, 76 Forest Green, I was like 15-16, he'd give us rides in, Suffolk county L.I., thought the cowl opening up when he left 2 posi marks was awesome. My fav ever since. 😀
It's an absolute pleasure to watch one of your videos.. in all my years of car and motorcycle experience,, I've never run across anyone with your acquired and stored knowledge.. I ALWAYS learn something when I watch you...
Can't wait to watch thos after I catch up on this video I'm watching now. Went on vacation last week and drove by a old shop in the middle of nowhere. Old cars outside everywhere. Went inside and the older gent had a ls5 forest green no stripes Arlington texas car , build sheet with its motor amd Trans sitting next to it. Dated 6A and wad sold June 19th at 5:50 pm. Also had 2 ls6 one from van nuys and another from Texas. He even pulled the build sheets out of his safe for me.
Lost soul missing his SS396 4sp. Blue w/ white stripe and black bench interior. 😭 Traded away 35yrs ago. I'm 53 now. Do the math. Yes, 18yr old heaven. I've had many muscle cars since but "that" car holds my soul.
Thanks Patrick - well done - the next car you talk about, I would like you to spend a little time talking about the rear tail lights, flat and bubble clear section for reverse, and why GM made the change, and what you consider correct.
Great video thank you for showing this car this could be one of the greatest cars great color the 70 LS6 is about is top-of-the-line. And anybody that's got one if it is a Flawless original everything is supposed to have and nothing's changed with no serious damage the price the price it could bring at a top auction is unlimited pricing. The right guy would pay five hundred grand for that car❤
A high school classmate had a 72 SS454 in the same color when I was in high school. Back then it was special but at the time still a fairly common used car. The 68 & 69 SS396 on the other hand were the most desired then.
My car in high school was 68 chevelle SS convertible with the 375hp 396. My parents should have never let me have it , and I should have never sold it. 😂
Awesome review. I was wondering what the numbers stamped on the rear waiter panels under the deck lid mean. Is the the year of the car or does the letter say what plant it was made at?
Love this color I have a 70 GTO / Judge 4sp ram 3 car same color code 48 (Chevy call's it Forest Green Met) (Pontiac calls it Pepper Green Met ) you probably think I am crazy but i trader a Fathom Blue 70 396/4sp Bench seat Chevelle that need at least paint work for it and a few $$$ .but it is a nut and bolt ground up restoration and triple green car loaded too. numbers matching about 80% all GM.
What a beautiful car. A friend of my brother had a 70 Chevelle 350 A/T. That was born this same color green. The idiot turned around and painted orange with black stripes. (Our high school colors) Probably wouldn't have been too bad of a color choice, but since he had NO EXPERIENCE painting, it looked like it was painted with house paint and a roller. Lol Thanks for the video
The excitement I feel when I see a 1970 SS Chevelle, a 350, 396, 454..don't matter, I know 350 only came without SS package, but never gets old. I miss my 72 Chevelle 350, Red white stripes, wasn't a SS, but awesome cars. And I had a brown 71 Malibu all original with straight 6 cyl in it. Paid $200 for that car in perfect body & running condition, had both in mid 1980's, and $1,700 for my 72, a nice street car, 14:52 @ 105mph in 1/4. With AC..😄 the prices have sky rocketed in 30 yrs.
I bought a 70 chevelle not an SS but is a hard top sport coupe 48 48 green color no stripes. It's badge with " 350 " on front corners . I will restore the car and drive it. I LOVE my car and PGN Videos. Helps give me ideas for my car. ✌️
Imagine my pain one day when I went to a Junkyard that used to be around and they had a complete 1970 SS454 LS6 El Camino in Blue, sitting next to a 1970 Cougar Eliminator 429CJ. I saved the Cougar and the El Camino went to the Crusher. Sorry, but in my heart I was always a Ford Man.
Glenn if someone was to source out original dated stuff like the master cylinder and the ps pump and brackets and distributor would it add much to the value?
Is there any chance you could further explain the reverse lock out mechanism? It's purpose and operation? I have never heard of this before. I did a quick Google search and found parts and some repair info, but not a description of what is or does.
In my opinion, it is beneficial buying a vehicle like this which has been restored a few years prior, thus any bubbling of paint will probably manifest it self. What do you'll think?
An old guy brought his one owner 70 Chevelle SS, black with white stripes to a mechanic in Toronto Ontario about 8 years ago. It was stolen during the night, and never seen again. He owed since he was 19 years old. Had original paint on it.

Love the car, but it does have the wrong upper radiator hose. Chevrolet used 2 different hoses. The hose that's on the car is for an air condition car.
