Okay we just need to preface… it goes without saying that ATW10 TOPS EVERY LIST, that’s just the law of the TS universe! However we chose not to talk about it because we have talked about it in a lot of the other ranking videos and need to let other songs shine 😂 but the ATW10 storytelling is truly unmatched im unwell thinking about it…

Another honorable mention that I don't see anyone mentioning (lol): It's Nice To Have A Friend!!!!!! It is a shorter song but I feel like she manages to put so much detail and imagery into the two and a half minutes and just the progression from kids to teens to getting married is just perfection and I just love it so much it's so cute and sweet

17:10 and, in my mind, Midnight Rain could be (in some multiverse 😆) about 80 years old Dorothea reflecting about "the life she gave away", about her town being "a wasteland, full of cages, full of fences, pageant queens and big pretenders" ("pageant schemes" are mentioned in dorothea). She became a huge actress and her movies are played over and over again on tv (even now that she's 80 years old) so "he never thinks of her except for when she's on TV".

Yes! As soon as I heard Midnight Rain (my favorite song on Midnights) I immediately connected it to Tis the Damn Season/Dorothea. It's the same story carried forward and looked back on. (Though I didn't see it being carried that far forward. You can be a lot younger than 80 and still have memories and regrets.)

One question - do we really (collectively) think Love Story is better (at least story telling wise) than Mary's Song? Because I have to strongly disagree. Mary's song paints a whole movie for me and the feeling I get is just way more powerful. And all the technical stuff like the choruses changes etc. I feel like are on the same level.

Being in my 1989 era right now I think “I Wish You Would” also deserved to be on this list.The fact that in the first verse we get his perspective of him being in the car driving past her house thinking that she hates him then in the second verse we get her perspective of her in her house by the window wanting him to come and THEN they meet in the third verse.I looove this song so much.I see a music video in my head so vividly it’s crazy.

I think many people think Speak Now has a music video because she was in the New Girl show where she crashed the wedding and stood up when they said speak now. Also there was a poster of her standing in the audience at a wedding and talking when they said speak Now (both in the cd booklet and a lithograph)
Mary’s Song for the honorable mention 🥰 that was the song that made me a Swiftie. I’ll never forget hearing it at 14 and being completely blown away by Taylor’s lyricism.

Evermore is my #1 on evermore idc always has been, always will be… it’s too deep and it will always be the shining star on that album… in a sea of stories about others… or stories about her shrouded in the stories of others, here we have the deepest story about her own experience. No bait and switch, just heartbreaking honesty. It is in my top 10 of all time as well… I was on that live stream weeping and I tear up every time I watch it (I’m tearing up now listening to you share your thoughts) thank you, Bonny.
HOW has no one brought up Tim McGraw?! Obviously it's a simple, sweet story but such strong imagery, a full progression - the first verse describes the relationship, the second verse describes their separation after the summer is over, and we learn there's a letter in a box under her bed; then in the bridge she's back on his street, delivering him the letter.... and then the twist is that the letter is what we've been hearing in the chorus throughout the song, it's her reminding him of their story. We even get a glimpse into the future with "someday you'll turn your radio on..." SO GOOD. So that's my honorable mention :)

I've always interpreted the "from sprinkle splashes to fire ashes" verse in YOYOK as a way to say "in the course of her enitre career". This meaning from the very first song of her very first album (Tim McGraw) to the last song of her latest album (at the time she wrote the song) being Evermore. In Tim McGraw she writes "I was right there beside him all summer long" (summer = sprinke splashes) while in Evermore she sings "Writing letters addressed to the fire" (fire ashes). This in my opinion makes the storytelling even more brilliant!!

I didn't expect to cry this much over a ranking video but here I am. My nana passed away 2 days ago, leaving her husband's (and greatest love of her life) heart broken and just hearing about Timeless and Mary´s song (that´s actually her name too🥺) destroyed me one more time. I will love Taylor till my last day just for the incredible talent of putting words and rythm to the endless emotions and scenes of a lifetime. I will remember my Mary, my Marjorie, every day, any time I hear her songs. Now they're carved on me. Thank you guys for this.

I think the 'you were there' in Evermore is similar to 'Mastermind' in its duality - it refers both to Joe and to the fans.
Especially as Aaron Dessner said it was very important to Taylor that Joe should play the piano in the studio recording too as it was " an important and special part of the story."
It was during her darkest period in 2016, she also found her greatest love (at least till now ) and hence the cracks of light
The cracks of light is what makes me think it's the fans. Of course we know Joe was there but I can imagine the cracks being multiple people. Each crack being a fan account, loving tweet or post etc.
Btw Mary’s song is about her neighbors in Nashville, she said that whenever she’d come back home, she’d think of how nice it was looking outside and seeing that real love still exists

All Too Well (actually 5 min version specifically) is the pinnacle of storytelling in every way possible: lyrically, the build in production and emotion, climax to slowing down and then building back up again. It’s so perfect and all works together to tell a complete journey. I don’t know how she does it. Also, it’s so fucked up how each chorus closes with the same kind of line with different lyrics, wind in my hair, down the stairs, running scared, it was rare I remember it all too well, because those lines to me are like a one sentence summary of the entire verse and chorus that preceded it. So then when she brings each of those lines back at the end of the song, she’s really recalling/summarizing the entire song back at the end, if you think of those lines as summaries of the verses and choruses.
THISSSSS! To me atw5 has just the perfect amount of detail to tell her story but let everyone paint the scene, while atw10 paints the whole scene on its own. Both slap tho.

When I didn't see Speak Now on the list, I was disappointed but not surprised. Then when you put it on the honorable mention list, I was like 😳. I hate to admit that the first time I heard Speak Now was when I listened to the TV of the album, and I was just floored by its storytelling and couldn't believe that such a young Taylor wrote it. Such an amazing song!

Thank you for including Evermore!!!! This song means so much to me, i personallly connect to it in terms of grief. After losing a loved one it really does feel like the pain will be evermore- and it does feel like that for a really long time, and it will be in some ways. But just so many lyrics and lines describe a loss and that grief, like i rewind the tape but all it does is pause on the very moment all was lost- it a perfect line to explain wanting to remember your person and memories but everything is just stuck on the moment of death and everything since then.

Speak Now didn't have a music video, but it did have a photoshoot in a church of her standing in the church. She also stood up in the church in the New Girl episode, so I think that's what most people remember. That's why no one can figure out what a gown shaped like a pastry looks like cause she never showed it.
Betty is such a storytelling song and what's interesting is that there's a key change on the last chorus when the story flips (same thing with love story) !!!
I just love how she builds the anticipation before the last chorus. I'll always remember Emily's reaction to Betty screaming "WHAT HAPPENS AT THE PARTY ??!!" 😂😂😂

What a lovely video concept i loved it! Its so beautiful and interesting that every person make different inferences and images about some of these songs! I love story telling songs its such a fun journey. I would put the great war&afterglow up there as well. To me the great war and afterglow is such a beautiful story together and i always imagined the great war as the aftermath of things happened at afterglow so yeah. Thank you guys its always a marvelous time to listen to you deep dive into some of these songs ❤❤ love u guys

Okay, I simply MUST say that this video has helped me fathom some songs that I previously haven't really given the time of day, namely tis' the damn season, dorothea, Timeless, and YOYOK. Like I simply have not understood the mastery behind it all so thank you for helping me appreciate some songs I have overlooked. I LOVE THESE RANKING VIDEOS AHHHHH!!!!!

Don’t know if it was already mentioned but “Speak Now” was played out in New Girl!! The episode is called Elaine’s Big Day and it’s revealed at the end who Elaine is. It’s Taylor speaking now before vows are exchanged between Cece and Shivrang, and Shrivang and Elaine runaway together lol
