    The Chinese have experienced 5,000 years of history, and one of the lessons learned from history is that the use of force cannot sustain the development of national power. Many Chinese dynasties obtained by force will not exceed a hundred years of history, and war will cause a lot of casualties. So this is not the best choice. Two thousand years ago, China was already a very powerful country in the world, but they did not expand their territory quickly, but traded with neighboring countries. This has a lot to do with their culture. They advocated Confucian culture and regarded violence as a symbol of uncivilization and barbarism.

      It is not in Chinese DNA to conquer others. Look at Philippines history. Has China ever colonize them even though they r neighbors? On the contrary Philippines was a former colony of Spain n USA which were thousands miles away.

    Culturally the Chinese had always been friendly to foreigners, but extremely harsh on internal dissent. I beleive it is in their DNA. It had not changed for 5000. It is not going to change in the modern era.
    As a Malaysian, I can confirm that the Admiral Zheng He came with the largest armada to Melaka to trade.
    The Portuguese meanwhile came in one year, saw the wealth and the next year came with an armada and conquered & ruled over Melaka. In between the years it was traded like cargo - it change hands to the Dutch, then the British.
    It is the very shrewd Westerners, that we need to be CAREFUL.

    Do not equate Western imperialist way of thinking to the Asian way of living. When China and India was ruling the land and seas, they did not plunder and destroy nations along the route or in their rise to power. When the West found power they colonise the whole world. The Americas is born out of conquest of the native Americans, same too for Australasia case. Even til today America is a warmonger and hoarder in contrast to Asia. I’ve been living in Australia for 9 years, Aussies don’t like politics. Due to political geography, Australia is too far away from the world centre, and Aussies really don’t care about the ranking or power of each country. In recent years, Australia Government was forced to choose side, which is the “America or China”. TBH, the politicians are ugly, this small group use the majority interest to trade for their own corruption. Luckily, Aussies are wise, because no one PM ran the government over 3 years.

    Agree with Kishore on all but 1 area, Kishore use the example of Viet Nam to back his prediction that Russia would allied with Europe and US against China. They may do so but for other reasons, not due to geopolitics that China will be stronger. If Kishore was right with his logic we would see both Canada and Mexico aligned themselves with the Soviet Union or other nations during the cold war and now.
    Viet Nam was never close to China even during their struggles against the French and US. Of course they had a cordial relationship especially whilst Ho Chi Minh was alive, Viet Nam had a stronger, richer and more powerful backer at the time, namely the USSR. So Viet Nam was already leaning away from China back then and not least even Ho was trying to get US support during his time, so it is no surprised when USSR broke up and US embargo lifted Viet Nam would forge a closer relationship with US, now from a strategic point of view it is a wrong move as China is a giant neighbour, Viet Nam has in the past and will be in the future dependent on China, this is just simple logic, like Canada on US etc.. This is why I don't believe Russia would abandon China for Europe and US, she may try to form good relationship with the latter two, but one can never ignore your neighbour, which was why Xi went to visit Russia as his first foreign trip.

    Kishore makes a number of errors in his overall description of historical events. Some of them are crucial errors. The US didn't win WWII. It was the Soviet Union that won the war in Europe. The US almost won the war in the Pacific, but the Soviet Union stepped into Manchuria which caused the Japanese to quickly surrender. The atomic bombs dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki weren't any more deadly than the regular fire-bombing that had taken place in Japan. In winning, however, the Soviet Union lost 27 million of its' citizens and had its' cities and even smaller towns literally destroyed. At the same time the US was first to have atomic weapons and refused to help its' former ally, the Soviet Union, to rebuild. The US then pursued the Soviet Union, never allowing it to build up its' economic system. The US took control of the world's economic system. Today the shoe is on the other foot. While the Soviet Union ended, it was replaced by the Russian Federation that, once Putin became its' leader, he has begun rebuilding Russian society. In addition, as Mabubani has described himself, China has become the leading economic power in the world. With its' Belt & Road Initiative, China has made the Russian Federation its ally. Militarily, the Chinese-Russian combination has begun to surpass the US and Europe scientifically and technologically. The US no longer controls the world's economic system. We really have no idea where these competitors are vis-a-vis each other militarily because that information is kept very secret. A future war will be very different than anything that military generals have envisioned or can envision. It will be quite different than WWII. All the wars that have been fought since that war have involved small countries.

  • @MEGALEHANE
    @MEGALEHANE 4 роки тому +5

    I didnt finish the entire video so I might have missed something. But I did watch the clip where Mr Mahbubani talked compared the financial crisis to the Coronavirus pandemic.
    This appears to me a rather problematic comparison. In my view a clear distinction could be made between the two situations to justify the differential treatment of China and America with regard to seeking compensation.
    The financial crisis was, to the the best of my knowledge, wholly attributed to the dysfunction of financial systems and private enterprises, of which the government played no direct role in bringing about the crisis.
    The Coronavirus was different in the sense that blatantly obvious evidence suggests the government was actively silencing the news about the virus for at least an entire month. Arresting and coerced those who dared to speak out.
    Therefore, countries are not seeking compensation on the basis that the virus originated in China and caused damages but on the grounds of the governments intentional suppression of the outbreak which delayed global reaction by a month.
    With that said I am by no means advocating for China to be punished because I understand the government is most likely to shift the burden on taxpayers, who had already suffered enough and have absolutely no way of venting their anger on the government without incurring harm to themselves and their families. This is a difficult issue and a difficult time. May we come through this time together.

    • @beamz81
      @beamz81 4 роки тому +4

      There are many reports that prove otherwise if you choose to see them. To be fair @王晨煜, China is dealing with a brand new virus which takes time to observe and ascertain. Furthermore if everyone is allowed to spread unverified information, the world would have had a bigger outbreak to contend with. There is protocol in every system. The confirmation that it was human to human transmittable was amended 24 hrs later. Therefore, why assume that China govt was intentionally suppressing the outbreak..

    • @MEGALEHANE
      @MEGALEHANE 4 роки тому

      @@beamz81 Hi, thanks for your comment.
      I have seen many reports, though I am not to sure what you mean by prove otherwise.
      It seems the first point of dispute from your side is whether or not "unverified information" can lead to a bigger outbreak. To this, I have two responses:
      First, how do you mean verified? Verified by the government? Or medical officials?
      Under the constitution of PRC article 35, citizens have a right to freedom of speech. So who's verification would you say is required to share a medical knowledge, of which you are a professional in the field, to a private wechat group of your colleagues and friends?
      Second, on what basis do you claim that the free flow of information will lead to a bigger outbreak? Allowing free flow of information would at worst lead to citizens take early precautions, and medical authorities to consider the situation in advance. What reasons could you provide for believing that warning people beforehand will cause more casualties?
      The second point of dispute is why would I assume that the Chinese government was intentionally suppressing the outbreak. I refer to your earlier statement that 'if everyone is allowed to spread unverified information'. It appears that you are suggesting that 'unverified' outbreak should be suppressed by the government. By your earlier statement, it appears that you are aware of the suppression of the information about the virus.
      Besides that, I think it should be relatively easy for one who was concerned about this issue and follows Chinese media to observe the mass online post deletes. Or at least to have read somewhere on the news about Dr Li, and many others' police inquiries after they spoke out about the virus.

    • @beamz81
      @beamz81 4 роки тому +1

      王晨煜 I hope you welcome a different point of view. Freedom of speech is any individual’s right.
      “Blatantly obvious evidence suggests the govt was actively silencing the news about the virus for at least an entire month.”
      Maybe I shouldn’t have said assumed, you are thinking that?
      It may be that the chinese do not trust their govt and medical experts which led to a ophthalmologist being a whistleblower. Who knows?
      You just made an assumption that I believe that warning people beforehand will cause more casualties.
      Unverified information should be verified by appropriate experts before letting the proper authorities/channels announce the fact. This way there will be less confusion and distrust.
      There is no wrong in Dr Li’s actions of informing own circle of friends as a form of precaution. But when the authorities get wind of it, is it their fault for detaining him to clarify the matter? It’s just cause and effects. There are vast amt of fake news now. And in Dr Li’s case he was right, but what if it wasn’t? His “efforts” might have caused widespread panic leading to other dire possibilities. He still kept his job unlike the nurse who lost hers in the states for telling the truth.

    Why could China recognise Mongolian dynasty and Manchurian dynasty as part of Chinese history and not Japanese occupancy of China, and to a small extent the Alliance from the West? Otherwise China could claim Japan and the Alliance from West as part of China.

      The Japanese they escaped out of China quickly enough, lucky for them, else the Japanese culture will disppear totally. This is the power of the Chinese culture. It is very tolerant and can absorb other culture.

      are you kidding me? how long was the Japanese occupancy? hence they only managed to take over half of the country. it's very different from the Yuan and Qing dynasties.

      Yes, that is the magic of China. China is the only country in the world that expanded its territory not by invading other countries, but by being invaded by others. The Manchus and Mongolians invaded China, but became assimilated and became Chinese. So, it was lucky that Japan did not occupy China for too long, otherwise there will be no Japan.

    27:20 Kishore decries poor quality of thinking by US Think Tanks. Hello(!) tell us something we do not know. These people have advised all US presidents and got US where it is when it comes to China. No wonder Trump and his cohorts don’t want to listen to them. However, they should have come up w/ a coherent approach to deal w/ hoodlums from CCP. Kishore is also biased as he only comes right up to the line where it would be logical to criticize China but never crosses that line. Great knowledge lack of objectivity. I’d seriously consider him to be in the pocket of China.

      your logic is if you're not with me, you are against me. He lives in a small, vulnerable island called Singapore next to china, and he as a former diplomat you want him to throw a stone at china. hes not going to play that game of strategic rivalry. Even EU wants to stay outttttt

    Alienation of American business community??? Not making lots of money in China like they are used to is alienation??? The Chinese are getting smarter and are now able to look after their own interest is alienation.....
    Your statement is rubbish.

    I'm 10 minutes in and I already couldn't agree less. There's a lot of self-contradictions there. Should the US spend on the military and not on its people (what does it even mean?). The notion that the US should cultivate its friendships and alliances with others - given as an example of how the US defeated the Soviet Union - only that none of it is factually true.
    US didn't need the foreign alliances to defeat the Soviet Union - it was quite the opposite. America's foreign allies needed Washington's protection from communism that the US was only too happy to provide. USA as such was never under any real threat from communist countries since it's protected by two vast oceans. Nuclear war would mean mutual destruction - so that wasn't as much American threat as everybody else's.
    So the fact is that Europe survived largely thanks to American aid - and not that the USSR collapsed because US had many allies. Those allies were the most exposed and they needed US more than US needed them.
    On the notion of "taking care of its people" - and then criticizing its exit from the TPP. You can't have it both ways. Trump was elected because Americans are widely disenchanted with lopsided trends in globalization, which have not only moved low-end low-cost jobs away (that's fine) but increasingly started moving more advanced manufacturing and technology jobs abroad as well. US remains a country with one of the lower labor participation rates in the West - in other words hidden unemployment is actually quite large, with huge portions of the society not actively employed.
    And here prof. Mahbubani is advocating American involvement in the TPP, which would mean further outflow of jobs to economies other than Chinese. I think Covid-19 epidemic shows more than anything in recent years the necessity to foster a capable manufacturing sector at home - but you can't have it if you're, simultaneously, engaging in a free trade agreement that is going to erode it.
    Sadly, prof's statements are full of slogans that don't really mean much - a choice has to be made and the US has made its choice.
    But there's a certain irony to it too - how can one be reasonably bearish about the US and bullish on China, if China is enormously more protectionist than the US is - and has been for decades? How is it that Chinese protectionism is a sign of power and any attempt at curbing American openness are seen as weakness?
    If prof. is questioning American military spending does he have the same reservations about Chinese military spending - including the enormous internal security expenses that actually dwarf investment in PLA?

    I do not think Kishore is very objective. I could only hear the one-sided story about his support for China.

      One sided? Listen to the video again. Anyway, is that the criterion for objectivity? Why are so many people saying Trump lies? Not objective? Not at all - the reason is that Trump lies on a daily basis.
