I knew all those men and the Suntones for many years. Gene was such an amazing and tender man. His wife is a treasure. and a lot of fun! God bless them all. He judged me many times. He was always true. Even when we had his opposite judge doing something very bad, he judged us truly. When I asked him why the other judge was so cruel, he said he thought he was kind of a Dick. I had known him, by then, maybe twenty years. We knew that other judge for about as long. We both laughed and I agreed. I loved that man. He was the Orange Bowl manager when the Dolphins had Don Shula. He was no lightweight. A genuine Southern Gentleman. None finer. That he had this moment, which I know he felt was a special thing, after a lifetime of special things. God rest His soul...he deserves it.
I thoroughly enjoy the entertaining and humourous direction barbershop has taken. I also absolutely adore a classic done right in Acapella. Nothing beats it's emotional and lasting impact.
I unfortunately never had the opportunity to meet Gene. He had passed away the year before I entered the society. But, I have heard NOTHING but good things about this man... About what he's done as a performer, as a champion, and as an arranger. Truly one of the greatest of all time.
