This is my absolute favorite rendition of this song... Been trying to remember the artist for so long after hearing this in high school (I'm 28), and I've finally stumbled upon it... my heart is touched... The melody sings to my soul...
Best Barbershop Quartet ever. Best Danny boy ever. Ever. I have heard all versions, dating back to old vinyl recordings 90 years old. Many sing the words, but so few sing to the heart as do the Suntones. RIP Gene. The very best. Ever.
This is amazing to be reading all these comments. I grew up with the Suntones.. Gene Cokeroft was my father Bert Warshaw, best friend. He actually gave the eulogy at his funeral. Gene was part of my father's comedy quartet, The Opa Locka Gas Company years later. I have many many fond memories of Bob, Harlan, Gene and Bill. Kevin, if you are in touch with Todd or Harlan, please let them know that the Warshaw family sends their love. I would love to hear Todd sing, if he is anything like Harlan, he's a super star. There will never be another quartet like the Suntones :)
This is the song that got me into barbershop. I didn't even know what barbershop was then. I was amazed at the depth and prominence of the bass and the angelic tones of the tenor singing the melody. I am indebted to the Suntones for opening up the intoxicating world of BBS to me.
This brings back so many memories as I have heard the Suntones sing this many times back in the 60's and early 70's. They were the best that's ever been in quartet harmony in my humble opinion.
I had the pleasure of singing with the Palm Beach County Coastmen with Harlan Wilson for about 4 years. Of course almost every show we did contained the Suntones. Even had the awesome pleasure of singing bass with them one night when Bill Cain was late for sound check. Never forget it!! One of the high points of my barbershop career.
My father,Johnny Wearing, had a few opportunities to sing a few with these fine gentlemen. Many years ago, Dad is 92 now he competed against this quartet at International. Till this day he says there is no question as to who solidified his desire to improve as a tenor. He said that when they performed this song .he cried. As a highly decorated war veteran as a tailgunner in WW2 Dad didn't get emotional too much.I remember twice, when Russ Seely died and also my Mom.Just sayin...
Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the roses falling it's you, it's you must go and I must bide. But come you back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. But when you come, and all the flowers are dying If I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear how soft you tread above me And oh my grave will warm as sweeter be For you will bend and tell me that you love me, love me And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me. Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.
Just the best. Whenever the world or something in America gets me down, I listen to the Suntones. Does it every time, makes me feel again what is so wonderful about this country. Such emotion. Eternal thanks, guys.
i love this song it is my favorite barbershop song ever. i love barbershop and this is one of the best groups out there, and so is the song. these guys are comparable to the gas house gang. i sing lead for my barbershop quartet and every one of these guys deserves applause. No one is saying anything about the base or the bari so i must say they both did a particularly amazing job. cudos.
I've heard this recording hundreds of times over the past 35 years. It sounds better than ever. Such amazing vocal control, blend, musicality and emotion. Elegantly simple (agree - not easy) arrangement. The Suntones ARE the standard IMHO.
we had this played at my father's funeral, 12/22/10... he loved and sang Barbershop, The Suntones, and, coincidentally, his name was Daniel... a lot of his 'older' friends knew him as 'Danny' ...
To all Suntones fans, you're not alone; I feel you--a magical blend and wonderful musicality and interpretation. They are one of the Gold standards, along with Boston Common and perhaps, of the newer generation, Crossroads. As to those looking for this arrangement, I suggest you contact Harlen Wilson's son, Todd, Tenor of Acoustix and Bass of others; he might have it. It's not on the Suntones' "Complete Works", either volumes 1 or 2. And as I discovered, Todd's perhaps temporary quartet, "Sons of the Tones", is one of the most musical quartets I've ever heard. Less interested in "busting a chord" than "serving the music." Give them a listen. Gorgeous stuff.
I looked at my library on iTunes one day, and this was the most frequently played song with something like 200 times listened. I can't tell you how many times I've rewound to listen to the chord they sing around 1:10 - 1:12 it gives me the chills every time they hit it.
what a shame that it is as they say, "no good deed shall go unpunished". I can think of no better work than to bring beauty into a dreary world and to encourage others to seek after such refinement. It is sad, The Barbershop Harmony Society, does not see it that way. For what you have done here and for the efforts you have made,I salute you. It is such a beautiful song, I know it's haunting melodious refrains would move many to seek after more of the same. Thank you very much.
I really like the way the end with "love you so" instead of "come to me". I don't think I've ever heard that done b4. Great way to enhance the sentiment.
Saw Gene perform this last night at Harmony College North East. He was singing with the bottom 3 parts of "Gotcha", hence the "Gotcha Tones". Superb job, he might be graying a little, but can still make you cry. Awesome concert!!!
Sublime harmonía con voces increíblemente melódicas. Solo por descargar esta pieza dan ganas de pagar mi suscripción a UA-cam! Gracias por compartir tremendas joyas 😄!
nothing beats seeing these guys live. i unfortunatly have not seen them w/ Bill Cain, but I did see a reunited Suntones w/ Todd Wilson singing bass around 5 years ago. And I have the pleasure of having Gene Cokeroft as my Chorus Director and Quartet Coach.
When I heard them at the AIC show, this brought the entire auditorium to tears. Oh my goodness, the emotion in their voices and the talent they have just gives me chills!! They're AMAZING!!
Does anyone know what arrangement the Suntones used to sing this most glorious example of beautiful four part harmony. How truly touching this melody is when sung by the Suntones. Their music will be enjoyed for generation to come.
+Tonatiuh Ornelas Then you haven't heard enough "60s Suntones. They were amazing. If you can buy a copy of their golden works, you will simply be amazed.
Absolutely Fantastic. The Suntones are by far and away the finest quartet. HANDS DOWN!! Thanks so much for posting and I hope "the Society" keeps their hands off and allows you to keep this posted so many other viewers can experience the best that barbershop can offer.
Fantastic, I stumbled upon this by accident, but it was one of the best barbershop recordings I have ever heard. Even a tear appeared in the corner of my eye... Thanks for upload!
wow. this is the reason i'm so obsessed with barbershop, i was trawling through youtube and came across it, and started transcribing it immediately to sing with my quartet.. i'll never grow tired. :') especially, 2:56, 3:12 :) it's a shame so much great barbershop's been taken off youtube.
A quartet blessed with tenor angels singing many Walter Latzco Arrangements. Walter married to the baritone of the CORDETTES and who arranged for the CHORDETTES, BUFFALO BILLS, Blue Grass Student Union and many other Barbershop fanatics
@Lust0bject Most Suntones original albums / songs are available to purchase / download from iTunes and amazon.com, etc. The "Masterworks" CD is also still available I believe from singers.com
There has never been a better quartet than the Suntones and I seriously doubt there will ever be one. It seems like all the "newer" quartets just sing loud and high pitched, no doubt they are good, but this is so much more pleasing to my ear. Incredible blend! Sorry bdmyers100 but your comment that the Gas House Gang and the Suntones are comparable is amusing to me. If anybody ever saw them live in their prime, I'm sure you'll all agree they were way ahead of their time.

Like I've said in other videos, the society does not understand the amount of popularity barbershop has gained over youtube. Especially with the younger audience, and it is a real shame that they are taking down all those videos.
I was devastated when Suntones Lead Rob Frankin retired from the quartet because he wasn't satisfied with his melody on their rendition of WHERE IS LOVE?
I would also like the sheet music, but I live in the UK so is there anyway you could send it to me too but electronically? I know I'm being really cheeky here :P
The Barbershop Harmony Society made me take down about 20 competition video clips claiming copyright infringement even though these videos are out of print. You would think that presenting good barbershop quartet singing on youtube would be advantageous to the organization.
My Dad was never truly happy with the changes that took place after SPEBSQSA. My Father sang against the Suntones in his first International back in 61 in Philly. His quartet at the time was the Chorderoys. They came in 41st out of 45,but he was hooked. He actually got to sing a tag or 2 with the greatest ever,The Suntones..My God,Listen to that tenor ! My Dad's (Johnny Ray Wearing) favorite.

Gene Cokeroft, not only a fabulous tenor, but a true gentleman. You will be missed. Much love to your family at this time.
Amy Bostick Kepler
My father just passed away June 19, 2010 and we had a babershop quartet sing this at his memorial... It was one of his favorite songs.

Here's to you Mr. Cokecroft, one of the greatest singers and teachers the society has ever had.

The Suntones were decades ahead of their time. What magnificent voices!
If I had to choose just one song to listen to before I left this Earth, I'd choose this.
Yes, you don't hear that pure beautiful lead singing much anymore. Nice arrangement. I've listened to this thing about 40 times.
It’s their tenor! Gene Cokecroft.
Just the best. Whenever the world or something in America gets me down, I listen to the Suntones. Does it every time, makes me feel again what is so wonderful about this country. Such emotion. Eternal thanks, guys.
What a wonderful comment ... Thanks, Jim
The way Gene moves so effortlessly between his registers is a marvel to behold. It's just one beautiful voice!
I learned harmony from these guys via 8-track. Third generation tenor here. Thank you.

Such a beautiful rendering of a beautiful song. Wow.
Perfect blending and rendering of a classic piece of songwriting ... thanks

Heard them just a few days ago at the BHS convention... they STILL sound like this. Absolutely incredible.
I’d love to see something like on this on UA-cam’s trending page. Would so healing for people to listen to.
One of the best Barbershop Quartets EVER.
Me too. Probably my favorite piece of recorded music.
I've never really heard the Suntones before, and I stumbled on this... Bloody hell, they were good.
I really like the way the end with "love you so" instead of "come to me". I don't think I've ever heard that done b4. Great way to enhance the sentiment.
My favorite piece of recorded music.
I juxtapose and nullify all worries in “my” life with this beautiful song.
Beautiful ❤
This is reducing me to a pile of tears and smiles.

You're very welcome ... still one of my favorite pieces of recorded music ....
Thank you a ton Recquilt! There's so little that can be found online about these guys it's unreal, I beg you to upload more. You're the MVP!
Agreed! I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. Simply beautiful.
Just perfect!
We have truly lost a legend.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side

you are correct sir
Has anyone got the four part sheet music for this? Would love to get a copy - please advise?
This has to be the only video on youtube with 50 000 odd views and 0 dislikes, and with good reason
I'm sitting here with a "Somewhere" vinyl signed by all the members. It's made out to a Jim Davis. Just thought it was funny your name was Jim. ^_^
I have a quartet myself (school, nothing big), but if you do transcribe it; can you please send me a copy of it?
I would be very grateful.
Anyone got a copy of the music (digital or real) i've looked all over the internet for it for ages?
It'll do.
Wow. :)
i tried to look for the music sheet for this version, seems like all started with D# in stead of F... anyone has any idea where to get this piece?
I could transcribe it and email it to you.
I'm sure I have the sheet music to this somewhere... What's your email?
@YellowCakeKid
Great observation....sounds easy but it aint...
I would also like the sheet music, but I live in the UK so is there anyway you could send it to me too but electronically?
I know I'm being really cheeky here :P
On what record can this tune be found?
