That was a really neat idea to start a project. Honestly - most ideas nowadays are just mutations of other ideas we've seen before. Love how that turned out in the end. Fits the bathroom really well!
Awesome project! I could see using this to come up with a concept sketch much quicker than I do now. I feel like I waste a ton of time trying to take broad based concepts and making them into furniture that is proportional and good looking.
Excellent! You are really on to something with this concept. I’m really looking forward to more projects like this.
Very cool build, David. A take on design I had never seen before this video! Would definitely want to see more of this.
You make the coolest projects Dave, and your shop is so fun to view . Enjoy your day
This is such a cool concept for a video and fantastic execution! Whether we like it or not, I think that generative AI will continue to gain traction, and I am curious (and a little scared) to see how it influences our lives.
Beautiful design! Thanks for showing us a new way to make.
Amazing towel hanger. Looks good. Thank you for walking me through the project.
I am very into curves and organic shapes like this so this was right up my alley! Thanks!
Awesome idea! Definitely explore this further!
Awesome job!
I'm a software dev and I think approaches like this are what will make AI useful. The AI didn't have the context to to magically create exactly what you wanted, or even something fully functional. The back-and-forth of generating options and focusing terms really gave some control over the creative process. Then, translating the image to a real thing let you put your spin on the final piece. We need to use AI as a super-power to help us be better, but still keep our human fingerprints in the mix.
Yooo do more of this! So cool! Do a table next!
That was awesome, thanks for the video!! We definitely need to embrace the AI and use it to make new designs like this.
Beautiful work, Dave! It looks fantastic! 😃
But yeah, it would be impossible to follow the drawing to the letter, but doing like you did the results are fantastic!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I've been kicking around the idea of adding a benchtop bandsaw with a 1/4" blade to my shop, and just keeping a resaw blade on my 14" bandsaw. I think you just convinced me.
Thinking the same myself.
The "mom joke" reminded me of a video you did awhile back. At the end, you said something like "I'm active on Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, the bedroom..." 😂😂
This was absolutely amazing!
I love your finish container
I think that the towel was folded in and it just sits in the top like tongs. I like your take on the project anyway!! Love watching your episodes.
Loved this video. I think there is probably space available for a dedicated AI Woodworking channel. Keep them coming!
First, cool AI project! I’ve been dying to see what you were inspired to make since hearing about it on the podcast.
Second, halfway through, I was like there’s so many missed opportunities for jokes with these references and measurements. You brought it all around. Did not disappoint lol
That turned out great!
Interesting towel hanger concept, turned out great.
8:03 "This is where the magic happens" 🤣😂
heard about this on the podcast and the execution/process is fascinating!
Great video. Just did something similar and made an oreo stool. Your take on showing and explaining your process never even occurred to me, very cool!
That stool looks awesome! Thanks!
Awesome video. Would like to see more like this. Keep it up!
Love this concept!!! Amazing video ❤️
Very cool. I would love to see more of these
Great video, loved the dowel ad bit. 😂
Bruh!!!!! That looks so freaking cool dude! Man I wish I had the real estate on my bathroom counter to make something like this. Thanks for sharing Dave!!!
I love your set up, it’s so fantastic. I wish I had space like that. Such a dream.
This was interesting! I like the idea, and I feel like it could definately help with the research / inspiration phase. I don't do a lot of woodworking, but sometime I make my own stuff. I think it's extremely satisfying to make your own design. I'm currently making speaker stands for the speakers I made. It's coming together nicely. They are in the same style and same veneer / paint combination. They are quite litteraly made for eachother. That's where I assume this AI would miss the mark although I have not used it so can't say for certain. But I'm assuming it can't take the considerations of how it would work in the room or work with existing furniture etc. Thats why I think it would still be mostly for inspiration, similar to how you did it I guess with scaling it. Nicely made!
I'm glad you reinforced that bottom joint. Yes, you have a long grain joint, but they're both hand carved, curved surfaces, so you may not get a FULL long grain joint!
Love that you are using this new tech to your benefit. "Everything is a hammer"
This is cool! I never could get past the advertisements on Squarespace to get anything done on there.
Love watching you work! Taking AI, using Malloof and making it a Piccutto!
You should add the sound that the foot pedal power tool make while you are grinding on your project to your instrumentation repertoire to mix in with your music. It made some interesting sounds
I haven't been able to get AI to work for me with the few times I have tried it, but I think this was a cool exercise. And, it turned out pretty great. I like the fact the design changed due to how you wanted to use it.
Great video David!!
This turned out great. I would love to see it on a bigger scale. AI is just like all technology, it's a tool that will take time to become common place. Let it inspire you just like you use everything else to inspire you.
Your workshop is Amazing....
Wow, this is amazing.
As always innovating on the content and the creative process!!!! So sick and excited for what AI could do for the design process.
This was such a great video idea, really unique piece 👍
Thank you Josh! You make some fine things yourself! 😉
AI can be a tool to help artists like yourself reach your potential. You still have the freedom to choose what decisions you make and make any alterations. Amazing job!
I appreciate your Steve Zissou look in this video.
Thankyou for using AI like the tool it is promising to become. Beautiful results!
Love the towel holder! I’ve used the same search technique to find a close approximation of a bookcase I want to build. After that, I fleshed it out on paper. I’m excited to start building it. As for A I and being afraid of it…yes, a little but I’m not sure why. We’ve all been using forms of it for years.
Real papa smurf vibe bro, love the work lol.
Nice execution! It’s beautiful and I keep hearing Pauly Shore from Biodome, “Welcome to the future!”
Futch…..er!
This was a cool idea. Looking forward to this channel in 2023!
I like it! Nice job!
Pretty fun idea. AI seems like a great spot to get inspiration and push yourself as a maker
Very cool bro! I really love that one of your design inputs was Sam Maloof, and that the AI knew who he was. I'm stoked to see what you come up with in the future when these AI programs get more flushed out. You, the bandsaw box guy, need to have AI design you a crazy bandsaw box!!
I love this so much it came out looking great
What you said on the podcast about using AI like a pinterest board struck me as an awesome idea. I'd be keen to see more of this
Excellent video showing how you made a concept real.... It's your design -- you input the criteria for the AI to render, then you interpreted what the AI rendered. Wish I lived near Kencraft.... Ordering wood just isn't the same as choosing it yourself.
The final design had elements that I would never consider doing. The curved pocket where the upright attaches to the base is beyond my feeble mind. The slope on the base is another element that I would not have created. Overall the towel rack is very organic and one of a kind with a refreshing look out of the box.
Hey Dave! Great video.
I listened to your podcast, Making it, where you discuss AI and design and liked your thoughts on it.
I quite liked this video where you took a 2D idea generated by a computer and added your own 3D touch to it.
Thank you! Appreciate you listening and watching!
Great video and I love your embrace of AI in making. I think it will only make the game more fun!!
looks amazing, maybe add a shinto rasp which would have helped shaping the areas?
Nice job, that’s being creative
Using AI while watching MIB ? 😜
Happy new year ! Best wishes.
Regards
This is beautiful! AI is just another tool to help us on our creative journey. Definitely want to see a larger scale project.
Yep, it still requires human curation and ingenuity to create stuff. It's just a tool like any other machine.
Do more of these please.
AI did design usable stand. It is probably used as wood clip - when towel is rolled it wedges/clips in between 2 sides and stands like that
Absolutely love it
Would I say it is YOUR design....absolutly. Everything we make is influenced by SOMETHING....you saw a concept and changed it to your need. That is YOUR design. And VERY cool execution. Like it! Am I afraid of AI. At this stage....no. So for now...thank you SkyNet!
Izzy just said the other day he’s going to be doing an AI woodworking video too…. Really like this design, and yea, it’s your design!
That was fun and cool
Foreskin marks, just spat my tea out of my nose. Glad you left that in 🤣
You should ask the AI program to write up the projects dimensions in CAD or vector… Whatever you use for your CNC. Great project!!!
So I’m watching and wondering how in the world is your shop so clean and without sawdust everywhere? I do like the dark walls too! So maybe you have a fest tool dust collector?
So I’m going from a traditional shop with messy floors and clutter to a studio style shop like yours. Would you suggest multiple vacs so I can keep the duct to a minimum or what? I love how clean and tighty your shop is I know you clean for the camera but is it impossible to have a semi dust free shop?
You got me there with my mom's bedroom. 🙌
This fun and it came out great! I think it's okay to use AI as long as an artist clearly states that they are doing so.
Very cool. Is there a website where I can mess around with the ai program and try my own projects?
Making Mom jokes to your brother 😂
I know, so weird! hahah!
Looks very organic… cool! No tendency to tip over?
I really enjoy your videos and mom.
Love the Donut-esque sponsor spot. Great job on the project, it really came out amazing.
Now this is a great idea on how to use AI. I was wondering what would happen if you used it to make blueprints last week when I saw another video playing with AI.
It makes so much sense that you are the first person I've seen doing this lol.
It's your design, as you needed to do lots of modifications: keywords, selection from the list of options, a major redesign to make it a completely different type of towel holder, and smaller mods during construction. Pretty cool, love your style!
super fun!
Really cool
Cool idea
I liked this video not because it involved ai but because it was design on the fly. This is the way I tend to do my project as well. That being said Yes I’d like to see a larger projects done with ai
Congratulations fron Brazil👏👏
Beautiful! But how stable/steady is it? It seems like it would move around a lot while using the towel. I'd be inclined to hollow out some spaces in the base and place some steel or lead weights just to give it some stabilizing mass in the bottom.
Also, would a trim router have been useful to rough in some of that final shaping of the vertical piece before smoothing it with sandpaper? It seems like that would have been a lot faster. Maybe not as organic a finished look as you were going for, though?
Ahh, midjourney. I used that a TON but it's still very, very limited. I think in a few years we are really going to see some wild stuff.
my wife is an SLP too! Cool project. also, putting a dowel through the planer was a surprise- would that create an oblong shape?
If you had to do this over would you consider cutting the tapered swoop first on the square stock using your bandsaw? I’m imagining doing this by making a cut similar to a resaw just curved instead of straight with your table tilted. Then you could cut the circle.
Yes, for sure.
I want to try this AI program. I definitely think you should do this a lot more.
Go big!
How are you getting such good dust collection on your bandsaw?
We have to think of AI as a "loyal wingman" that helps us out, not necessarily our replacement. Imagine having a non-judgmental person to talk with to openly share our thoughts and ideas with. I think our future looks more like having a dedicated assistant than robot overlords.
I like this idea.
Love it 👍 I'm not s woodworker and would never make this 😉 but these kind of videos are really fun to watch!
In regards to the AI, as a designer myself, I see it as a great sketching tool but I also appreciate that there will be alot of ethical and other discussions to be had around the topic.
Also I can totally get that some graphical illustrators and people making stock images, might be worried by these technologies.
If you haven't, check out the UA-cam artist Jazza and his explorations of AI, very interesting stuff.
Great video. Super intrigued by using AI to model designs off of. Not sure how you did it Space Wizard!
