The only thing I would add to your (brilliant) essay is the fact that he worked this into the world building, as our legends are about them, and many of their legends about us. And the circularity is what really makes this brilliant, in my opinion. But I definitely want more of this! Excited for the new book they announced covering this type of stuff; hope they do it justice (as you have).
Thank you! I totally agree, the nods to our real world history and folklore add to giving the story a tangible place in our world. When we talk about King Arthur, are we actually discussing Artur Hawking and remembering his name wrong? 🤔
@@ElliotEdits this, to me, was the coolest realization when reading. The way he named things it’s like they spell things wrong from our history in the same way we spell things wrong from theirs, so there’s a symmetry to how the knowledge is lost.
Drew McCaffrey, a friend of mine, and pretty well known in the WOT community did his capstone paper on Sir Thomas Mallory, Arthurian Legend and the parallels with WOT, so he's brought up a ton of connections during the Inking Out Loud (his podcast) episodes on WoT. It's always fascinating.
That sounds like a capstone paper I would love to read! I'll have to check out the podcast. If they're ever looking for guests, there's not enough people in my life to chat about fantasy and mythology with!
@@ElliotEdits hmmm. Both are classic. I’m going to go with Holy Grail. So many epic scenes. “An African or European swallow? Go away or we will taunt you a second time” 😂😂😂
Great video. Spoilers: Tar Valon. . . Avalon. Surprised you didn't mention that one. If you did, my apologies. I'm listening at work. In the Fourth Age Tar Valon becomes known as Arvalon.
Good video, but you should really put in a spoiler warning in the beginning too. I have read all the books, but for someone who havn't, you might have spoiled: SPOILER Egwene becoming amyrlin (drawing of her with the stole) Ishamael dying, being recarnated, and that moridin is Ishamael Rands mother was the daughter heir of Andor

@@SarcasmFiend23 100% this! Who's to say the Vikings weren't talking about Mat when they told stories of a one-eyed wanderer with a hat and spear

“Well I didn’t vote for you”
One of my favorite movies 🎥 😂
🤣🤣🤣
@@GrammaCheri one of mine too! Do you prefer Holy Grail or Life of Brian?

@@GrammaCheri agreed! I love both, but Holy Grail does have the edge I think... "Tis but a scratch"
Keep em coming.
Will do!

Arvalon... Why does this make me think that pirates have taken over the city? 🤔😅
Mooooooorrrreeeee
On it!
Throwing in a comment to please the algorithm. This was a very awesome watch 👍🏾
Much appreciated thank you! I will of course offer up the usual offerings to the almighty algorithm

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! More mythology content coming up
Thank you! Is there another fantasy series you'd like to see analysed?
Maybe the faithful and the fallen by john Gwyen. He seems to have some keltic influence or maybe LOTR seems interesting too. thanks 😊
Yes! More!! More!! This was brilliant ❤️.
