Master The Classics: Prescription Julep

- If you follow the history of Juleps all the way back, you can see them first emerge around 900 A.D. and they emerged as a medicinal drink. Actually for a lot of their early history they were considered and referred to as medicine. It wasn’t until the late 1700’s in America that the tide began to change and the Julep was something that went from being a drink given for specific ailments to one that was drunk for fun. This early Juleps actually tended to resemble a Sling more than anything else but in 1802 is the first recorded evidence of Mint going into the Julep and even then it was referred to as a “Mint Sling.” According to David Wondrich there was a time when “people fought the good fight and called a Sling a Sling, but by the 1920’s it had become a Julep for good.”
The Prescription Julep was first Published in serial Harper’s Monthly ran in 1857 titled “A Winter in The South.” Although I have tasted a lot of Julep variations in my day this one is one of the tastiest for my money. The Cognac mellows the rye a bit and the Rye gives the Cognac a bit of spice. A win win for the drink and as the imbibers for us too!
Cheers!

When's Marius going to make us a cocktail?
hmmm.....
🤔
Leandro, You need to remind people to like comment and subscribe! On begining of every vid! This chanel should be over 100k allready..
Great video. One of my favorite of the tutorials. I really like to make the Peach Brandy Julep. Also LOVE the copper cup. Keep up the great work!
Would you recommend prescription glasses for people who can't find julep cups?
On a more "serious" note this looks like a really nice mint julep variation. I really wish I had a convenient source for pebble ice, because using a Lewis bag is kind of a pain in the butt, fairly noisy and produces unevenly siced crushed ice
"Not going to get into the history of it" 4 minutes later still talking about the history of drinks! :D Love the education! :D
I go to sonic and pay $2 for a 10 lb bag of pebble ice
0:08 When Leandro is 10% Italian.
HAHA!
I also started buying the Sonic ice after you mentioned it in a previous episode. I regret nothing.
Talking of American brandy, how do you feel about Korbel? Can't get Argonaut all the way out here in WNY.
How did I get all this history in my cocktail? Also more please and garnish with some citations.
I do like a little dopamine release everynow and then 😁, jokes aside that sugarcube technique is quite genius, im sure it leads to a more evolving and interesting cocktail, need to try it next time i make julep. 🤔
NO JUMP CUTS, NO JUMP CUTS!!!
Does Argonaut distribute across the US? I’ve never seen it around.
Not yet, although you can order from them over the internet i believe.
The Educated Barfly Would Pierre Ferrand work in lieu of this?
What company do you get your ice from ?
pedro soto depends on the ice.
I get my pebble ice from Penny Pound Ice Company in downtown LA but all the Collins Ice and Old Fashioned Rocks I make myself with a cooler and filtered water
What is reasoning for using a sugar cube in addition to simple syrup?
Nevermind. I got to the end of the video and you explained it. Brilliant!
I definitely want to try this one, will peppermint work in this cocktail?
Yep!
@@TheEducatedBarfly Thank you :)
If you can’t find American Brandy use VSOP Congac as a replacement?!? Should be the other way around in my opinion....
jsfourdirections nah there’s a lot of great Brandy out there now...
I like that you take your time to do drink research, but in my opinion we could have done without the whole “Marius forgot the ice” bit.
What kind of straws are those again?
Surfside Sips! surfsidesips.com
Thank you!!
