I went to school for poetry not long after her books became popular and Kaur was/is the bane of my personal poetic existence. I try to find the value in anything anyone makes in good faith, but her work reads to me as a lazy cash grab.
I picked her book up on the shelf without even knowing who she was and read it and said "This is horrible, this is not really poetry." I am an accomplished educated poet, so if I said that without ever knowing who she was, then you know it has to be true.
So, given that you are accomplished, is it safe to assume you are widely published in respected literary journals? You have a book (or several) published with traditional publishers that is readily available in bookstores internationally? Could you share some credits because I'd like to read your work and decide for myself how accomplished you are, just as you judged Kaur.

Kind of like religion is integrated into politics even though government wants church to be a separate thing - they cannot because they have to appeal to the masses. Social media is integrated into our culture. Social media is the door people use to look at platforms for art or whatever. There are still platforms that talk about Edgar Poe or other classics that are actually good. There is some academia that goes over Rupi Kaur. And, academia is prompted by the market. They would not have looked at her if she wasn't so influential to modern teens. They wouldn't cover her if she didn't establish a new genre "insta poetry" no matter how bad it is.
@@valvihk3649 I would argue that the absolute of the free market is, at the same time, an antithesis to culture while holding some form of culture in itself. The market didn't integrate in the culture, it ate it and dismantled it and repurposed it in a form that doesn't hold any substantially political, artistic or human value. It's just impossible to actually "engage" with and from within culture today, wheter we like it or not, that is a fact, but there are indeed historical reasons for it. To see perpetual technological progress as something as better than what came before is a product of a positivist thinking that condones and omits the practices of capitalism in itself, therefore it does tell that capitalism holds a culture that serves mainly at justifying the status quo, and the culture that keep capitalism alive are what created United States, which are hyperindustralization, colonialism, racial segregation, and so on. Every single aspect of capitalism leads to that, there's just no way to see it in other ways. We can, objectively, argue that visual art (in the way we intended it before), for instance, is dead, there's no dimension or prospect to a substantial evolution of it's form as it's form is held by culture and capitalist culture has no form. Regarding literature, I was definitely wrong at associating the academia's positions as independent to market, as it is subjected to it as much as anything else. I just think it would be absolutely necessary to insert the discussions about art and creativity in an argument inseparable of historical-materialist criticism of neo-libertarian ideology and post-capitalism, as we know today that the concept of freedom by capitalistic means are really not reconcilable with creative, private and juridical freedom, and it's just a concept to justify a free market that can, and will, overcome these notions for it's interest.
I have a very similar take. A lot of her stuff is just too short and cheesy, but there are some nice pieces throughout. I'm surprised she got as published and made as many sales as she did. She definitely took advantage of the "tumblr days" to create her name. Of course, in modern times, she's not as relatable as she may have been to 14-year-olds just exploring life back then.
there is no type of dark and light in her poetry, no type of contrast. Plenty of poets put great lines in their work but the poem must be great as a whole.

I disagree with the idea of comprehension as a whole, this is the kind of mindset that makes majority of people completely turned off by poetry. For many, poetry is difficult to understand. However, if one line within a poem touches your heart and makes you remember it for the rest of your life shows how great that poem is within one speck of it (for you). Enjoyment is part of poetry not necessarily just comprehension. Rupi Kaur is a terrible poet. What she does needs "insta" something but not "insta poetry." She made poetry way too obscure.
I remember reading this and thinking I was the dumb one cause I found most of the "poems" too shallow, and convinced myself that there must be some deeper meaning to them which I couldn't understand or something like that. @mattyfox_ Hang in there dude, I feel a similar way. Bukowski's directness in novels and poems is amazing. Maybe find more similar voices, and then make it your own. I personally think Kaur falls down here not for being intense and direct, but for not developing or creating enough. Consider checking Mary Oliver and Anne Sexton, you might like them for a similar reason to why you like Bukowski (at least, I do). Good luck!
i wrote a poem a long time ago but ive felt really discouraged because rupi kaur readers dont consider it a poem. please tell me whether or not it is❤️ there will come a day where you sit on your bed. kittens surround you, climbing your limbs and eating away at the fabric of your clothes; the warmth of the mattress will welcome your mind to rest and the sanctity of the pillow will tangle your hair, leaving you blissfully unaware of it. mourning doves outside will sing the song of youth and old age all the same; the medley will connect you with those in the area as you hear the same tune, pridefully chanted by the fowl on the communication wires, sitting neatly in a comfortable row. you will wonder how they spend hours up there, perched gleefully with a lack of responsibilities and an always-free schedule, but you will not question. you will simply admire and only slightly envy. there will come a day where those kittens have grown and left your home, running free in the hallways of a foreign place, and the mattress that welcomed you so kindly will be old and stained with juice of all sorts. the pillow that happily tussled your hair will now wrap those strands around your head, invading every cavity of your face as well as your comfort. the sound of the birds outside will now be replacements for the mourning doves that once brought you to a state of tranquility. you will realize that the songbirds you internally inquired about had the constant responsibility of worrying about what to eat for dinner that day, and the incessant fearful alertness that comes with having a natural predator. you will know that some of those gorgeous feathered flurries have been devoured by a higher power, not given the mercy of living another day. the communication wires will soon be as empty as your bed.

Thank you for exposing the Rupi Kaur cult. I was wondering why Indian woke leftists are blindly marketing her stuff, I was pretty interested to read this book someday because I love poetry too. One reason why I think her poetry is in such style in because she thinks her target audience Indians are illiterate foolish to accept anything garbage as poetry especially if it comes from Non resident Indians (NRIs) staying in abroad. May be she is targetting Punjabi audience in India may be the English education is below standard levels there but I'm sure Punjab audience is not dumb as her writings. These people push sexuality in everything, I'm okay if they want to discuss sexuality but they should also discuss the trauma associated with it and workable solutions for it. I remember during my school days my English teacher used to describe poetry lessons in classroom and language classes were the most memorable part of my childhood. I am somebody who grew listening to Shakespeare, Dickens, Robert Frost kind of writers from schools. I never lately touched poetry but last time I delved into poetry was during my guru Sadhguru narrating his poetry works in a video titled " Eternal Echos " since then my interest in poetry kind of taken a rebirth .I would suggest you to watch the video Eternal Echos with Sadhguru on UA-cam..I'm sure you will love it ... The saddest thing about the Rupi Kaur story is it shows that there are millions of people who feel that they want art and have an interest in it, but have simply been failed by the education system.
She is the definition of someone “telling and not showing”. Also I’m a year late to this video but ever since 2015 I’ve been scouring the internet for like minded individuals when it comes to Rupi. I just feel like these books of this style of poetry, are not about the poems alone but about the experience of being a woman, which is basically not addressed in public works quite this way. To me it’s very much of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

Rupi, who claims to be Sikh, seems to be validating a conviction -- religious or not, her own and/or others' -- to let hair be. Background: Hair on any part of the body stop growing at a naturally-finite length. Sikh faith considers the hair sacred, so one tenet is to let the hair be & kept tidy & covered Orthodox Sikhs (the "Khalsa") must not cut, trim, or shave hair. They also need to wear a turban -- a long cotton cloth wrapped freshly each time -- that helps with comfort, mood, head & hair safety, and hair management. [And safety, for the head....turban often works to save from concussions etc.!]. Countless others practice the two roles as well, though women less so in the turban role. When it comes to many Sikh females: without turban that bonds more conviction to the spiritual and/or religious path, many of the youth & women turn to hair & body fashions & modifications -- with particulars that may go against tenets and/or a necessary humiiliy in living. In 2007 & 2010, I wrote about hair vis-a-vis appeal to nature and other factors, in greater depth, with more pith and feeling. Who wants to read it?

My position regarding Rupi Kaur's poetry is similar to Martin Scorsese's regarding Marvel movies. There is absolutely nothing wrong with liking her work, that you feel identified with her phrases, that you are moved by her life story. All of that is great. But what she writes is not poetry. Literature is an art that deserves respect, we must respect great writers and value true talent and effort. That does not mean that Rupi has no talent or that she has no merit. Personally, I give her full and complete credit as an influencer, public figure, opinion leader, internet personality and also as a visionary, businesswoman and activist (although I don't really buy her ideas that much)... but I can't give her credit as a poet because that would be disrespectful to poets, her lines are incomplete thoughts and little more than that. I would add that I think it is very audacious of her (in a good sense) to have taken her writings to the field of performance because, once again, she is a visionary woman and has known how to capitalize on the attention she has received, she has known how to jump on the bandwagon of fame and has been very astute (or maybe just intuitive and instinctive) in aligning herself with mainstream themes. Honestly, I'm glad for her success but I'm not happy at all for the decline in quality that all artistic disciplines are experiencing. I hope my appreciation of this author helps some people to broaden their horizons. Blessings to Rupi, by the way.

33:40 I feel like the first poem wasn’t literally trash talking the new woman, It was just a vent. It reminds me of “You Oughta Know,” (I mean not as good but similar type of thing) I think I was going somewhere further but my phone did a mini-reboot and I lost my thought.
31:14 “cut off” could have two different meanings… like literally cut with a knife or scissors like Vincent Van Gogh (which actually makes me think lots of other things about this poem) but it can also be used to mean “turned off.” So in the south a lot of people say “cut off the lights” or “cut off the radio.” Instead of turn off… you can also think of cutting something off like “she was getting money from her parents but they cut her off.” So in this case it’s that they stopped providing, they cut off their support. You can cut someone off in traffic or cut them off when they are talking. I feel like the use of the phrase “cut off” can just evoke so many things.

'the emperors new clothes' story sums up this book....and the recognition it received. very good to see someone else sees through this for what it is.... poetry essentially, is a craft of sewing words into a tale.... to depict emotion.... it requires a depth of levity and passion.... it requires a richer ink... a rhythm. the poet must possess the ability ... the inner twinkle.. Within the soul of poetry, grow the fruits of life... the labours, the desires, the earth that surrounds us... the beings who dwell.... that is why in the past the great bards wrote so well... they had the twinkle of life and were able to use the language to portray this to the world. nowadays...however this has been lost.
She gained buzz and fame through her short form poetry on social media platforms, mainly instagram. I get why you feel scammed but you can't fault her for sticking to her niche. She popularized this way of writing then literary heads came for her with torch and pitchfork. Further, just bc it's short form doesn't make it any less valuable or complex. Writing a novel vs writing poetry both take a lot of energy to do. You gotta give it to her tho, she had the perfect setup for the times we're living in where people's attention spans are that of a fly.

That poem at around 20:30 is just an appeal to nature fallacy assuming that because something is natural, it is therefore meant to be, or good. The far more interesting exploration would be exploring the social construct of WHY people choose to remove it or even maybe having a poem about why it would be that way if you wanted a religious angle on it to raise a question. I don't agree with you like you showed those first half about love and relationship they are similar but they don't have exact meaning, they have different perspectives and lesson which i felt, and those poems are really good and thoughtful and powerful to make you realise a lot of things and the other poem you called absurd was deep, and but then the poem it was actually very similar to it but not same, that was about the memories that stays , second was about what it says about the person which i interpreted. Poem Can be short, it's not wrong, or bad, there are poems like that, and they can be still powerful and impactful a lot, art is subjective after all . There are poems in it which are shallow but the not one you showed then.they are a lot different, carry similar message and it's not wrong repeat similar message in different way and perspective through poem .

Imho poetry is like a novel.... It's an art that requires skill, not just the emotions and expressiveness required for the voice. Storytelling, regardless of how you do it, requires technique. Even free verse poetry has technique and rhythm embedded into it. Writing sentences and breaking them into something compact isn't a poem, because it's simply just a thought made to look aesthetically pleasing, then shared on the internet. I'm a lover of the Romantics. Not every poem they wrote has the same form, meter, or rhyme. Some of them are short and simple, Keats is an example of the beauty in the simple things. But the reason they're poets, and Instagram Poets aren't, is he had the skill to manipulate words. He didn't just jot them down and spliced it up to look pretty.

Majority of people who like poets, don't like Rupi's work. Some of us were introduced to poetry via things like Dead Poets Society, which sent us on a trail of poems from the Romantics to the Realists, WWII and even some modern. The "organic and simple" can be done with skill; Keats is the best example I have of someone who did exactly that. The problem is, putting a #deepthought with a few line breaks and a pretty background, does not a poem make.
She has no exposure to diversity? Everyone does nowadays. Also it is extremely pandering to assume that all work done by a certain race is automatically not allowed to be critiqued. You shouldn’t treat different races differently.

I picked her book up on the shelf without even knowing who she was and read it and said "This is horrible, this is not really poetry." I am an accomplished educated poet, so if I said that without ever knowing who she was, then you know it has to be true.
So, given that you are accomplished, is it safe to assume you are widely published in respected literary journals? You have a book (or several) published with traditional publishers that is readily available in bookstores internationally? Could you share some credits because I'd like to read your work and decide for myself how accomplished you are, just as you judged Kaur.

Kind of like religion is integrated into politics even though government wants church to be a separate thing - they cannot because they have to appeal to the masses. Social media is integrated into our culture. Social media is the door people use to look at platforms for art or whatever. There are still platforms that talk about Edgar Poe or other classics that are actually good. There is some academia that goes over Rupi Kaur. And, academia is prompted by the market. They would not have looked at her if she wasn't so influential to modern teens. They wouldn't cover her if she didn't establish a new genre "insta poetry" no matter how bad it is.
@@valvihk3649 I would argue that the absolute of the free market is, at the same time, an antithesis to culture while holding some form of culture in itself. The market didn't integrate in the culture, it ate it and dismantled it and repurposed it in a form that doesn't hold any substantially political, artistic or human value. It's just impossible to actually "engage" with and from within culture today, wheter we like it or not, that is a fact, but there are indeed historical reasons for it. To see perpetual technological progress as something as better than what came before is a product of a positivist thinking that condones and omits the practices of capitalism in itself, therefore it does tell that capitalism holds a culture that serves mainly at justifying the status quo, and the culture that keep capitalism alive are what created United States, which are hyperindustralization, colonialism, racial segregation, and so on. Every single aspect of capitalism leads to that, there's just no way to see it in other ways. We can, objectively, argue that visual art (in the way we intended it before), for instance, is dead, there's no dimension or prospect to a substantial evolution of it's form as it's form is held by culture and capitalist culture has no form. Regarding literature, I was definitely wrong at associating the academia's positions as independent to market, as it is subjected to it as much as anything else. I just think it would be absolutely necessary to insert the discussions about art and creativity in an argument inseparable of historical-materialist criticism of neo-libertarian ideology and post-capitalism, as we know today that the concept of freedom by capitalistic means are really not reconcilable with creative, private and juridical freedom, and it's just a concept to justify a free market that can, and will, overcome these notions for it's interest.

I have a very similar take. A lot of her stuff is just too short and cheesy, but there are some nice pieces throughout. I'm surprised she got as published and made as many sales as she did. She definitely took advantage of the "tumblr days" to create her name. Of course, in modern times, she's not as relatable as she may have been to 14-year-olds just exploring life back then.
there is no type of dark and light in her poetry, no type of contrast. Plenty of poets put great lines in their work but the poem must be great as a whole.

I disagree with the idea of comprehension as a whole, this is the kind of mindset that makes majority of people completely turned off by poetry. For many, poetry is difficult to understand. However, if one line within a poem touches your heart and makes you remember it for the rest of your life shows how great that poem is within one speck of it (for you). Enjoyment is part of poetry not necessarily just comprehension. Rupi Kaur is a terrible poet. What she does needs "insta" something but not "insta poetry." She made poetry way too obscure.
I remember reading this and thinking I was the dumb one cause I found most of the "poems" too shallow, and convinced myself that there must be some deeper meaning to them which I couldn't understand or something like that. @mattyfox_ Hang in there dude, I feel a similar way. Bukowski's directness in novels and poems is amazing. Maybe find more similar voices, and then make it your own. I personally think Kaur falls down here not for being intense and direct, but for not developing or creating enough. Consider checking Mary Oliver and Anne Sexton, you might like them for a similar reason to why you like Bukowski (at least, I do). Good luck!

Thank you for exposing the Rupi Kaur cult. I was wondering why Indian woke leftists are blindly marketing her stuff, I was pretty interested to read this book someday because I love poetry too. One reason why I think her poetry is in such style in because she thinks her target audience Indians are illiterate foolish to accept anything garbage as poetry especially if it comes from Non resident Indians (NRIs) staying in abroad. May be she is targetting Punjabi audience in India may be the English education is below standard levels there but I'm sure Punjab audience is not dumb as her writings. These people push sexuality in everything, I'm okay if they want to discuss sexuality but they should also discuss the trauma associated with it and workable solutions for it.
I remember during my school days my English teacher used to describe poetry lessons in classroom and language classes were the most memorable part of my childhood. I am somebody who grew listening to Shakespeare, Dickens, Robert Frost kind of writers from schools. I never lately touched poetry but last time I delved into poetry was during my guru Sadhguru narrating his poetry works in a video titled " Eternal Echos " since then my interest in poetry kind of taken a rebirth .I would suggest you to watch the video Eternal Echos with Sadhguru on UA-cam..I'm sure you will love it ... The saddest thing about the Rupi Kaur story is it shows that there are millions of people who feel that they want art and have an interest in it, but have simply been failed by the education system.

Countless others practice the two roles as well, though women less so in the turban role. My position regarding Rupi Kaur's poetry is similar to Martin Scorsese's regarding Marvel movies. There is absolutely nothing wrong with liking her work, that you feel identified with her phrases, that you are moved by her life story. All of that is great. But what she writes is not poetry. Literature is an art that deserves respect, we must respect great writers and value true talent and effort. That does not mean that Rupi has no talent or that she has no merit. Personally, I give her full and complete credit as an influencer, public figure, opinion leader, internet personality and also as a visionary, businesswoman and activist (although I don't really buy her ideas that much)... but I can't give her credit as a poet because that would be disrespectful to poets, her lines are incomplete thoughts and little more than that. I would add that I think it is very audacious of her (in a good sense) to have taken her writings to the field of performance because, once again, she is a visionary woman and has known how to capitalize on the attention she has received, she has known how to jump on the bandwagon of fame and has been very astute (or maybe just intuitive and instinctive) in aligning herself with mainstream themes. Honestly, I'm glad for her success but I'm not happy at all for the decline in quality that all artistic disciplines are experiencing. I hope my appreciation of this author helps some people to broaden their horizons. Blessings to Rupi, by the way.

31:14 “cut off” could have two different meanings… like literally cut with a knife or scissors like Vincent Van Gogh (which actually makes me think lots of other things about this poem) but it can also be used to mean “turned off.” So in the south a lot of people say “cut off the lights” or “cut off the radio.” Instead of turn off… you can also think of cutting something off like “she was getting money from her parents but they cut her off.” So in this case it’s that they stopped providing, they cut off their support. You can cut someone off in traffic or cut them off when they are talking. I feel like the use of the phrase “cut off” can just evoke so many things.

poetry essentially, is a craft of sewing words into a tale.... to depict emotion.... it requires a depth of levity and passion.... it requires a richer ink... a rhythm. the poet must possess the ability ... the inner twinkle..
Within the soul of poetry, grow the fruits of life... the labours, the desires, the earth that surrounds us... the beings who dwell.... that is why in the past the great bards wrote so well... they had the twinkle of life and were able to use the language to portray this to the world. nowadays...however this has been lost.

She gained buzz and fame through her short form poetry on social media platforms, mainly instagram. I get why you feel scammed but you can't fault her for sticking to her niche. She popularized this way of writing then literary heads came for her with torch and pitchfork. Further, just bc it's short form doesn't make it any less valuable or complex. Writing a novel vs writing poetry both take a lot of energy to do. You gotta give it to her tho, she had the perfect setup for the times we're living in where people's attention spans are that of a fly.

I don't think she's bad at writing poetry but I do think sh needs to take her time before publishing her work as a book so that she doesn't have to fill it with so many meaningless words.

That poem at around 20:30 is just an appeal to nature fallacy assuming that because something is natural, it is therefore meant to be, or good.
The far more interesting exploration would be exploring the social construct of WHY people choose to remove it or even maybe having a poem about why it would be that way if you wanted a religious angle on it to raise a question. This is just fallascious thinking as a poem.

I don't agree with you like you showed those first half about love and relationship they are similar but they don't have exact meaning, they have different perspectives and lesson which i felt, and those poems are really good and thoughtful and powerful to make you realise a lot of things and the other poem you called absurd was deep, and but then the poem it was actually very similar to it but not same, that was about the memories that stays , second was about what it says about the person which i interpreted. Poem Can be short, it's not wrong, or bad, there are poems like that, and they can be still powerful and impactful a lot, art is subjective after all . not in my opinion. there are poetic things in tumblr for sure but a single sentence with two breaks is not poetic TO ME most of the time. if u like it, thats fine.
Imho poetry is like a novel.... It's an art that requires skill, not just the emotions and expressiveness required for the voice. Storytelling, regardless of how you do it, requires technique. Even free verse poetry has technique and rhythm embedded into it. Writing sentences and breaking them into something compact isn't a poem, because it's simply just a thought made to look aesthetically pleasing, then shared on the internet.
I'm a lover of the Romantics. Not every poem they wrote has the same form, meter, or rhyme. Some of them are short and simple, Keats is an example of the beauty in the simple things. Majority of people who like poets, don't like Rupi's work. Some of us were introduced to poetry via things like Dead Poets Society, which sent us on a trail of poems from the Romantics to the Realists, WWII and even some modern. The "organic and simple" can be done with skill; Keats is the best example I have of someone who did exactly that. The problem is, putting a #deepthought with a few line breaks and a pretty background, does not a poem make.
She has no exposure to diversity? Everyone does nowadays. Also it is extremely pandering to assume that all work done by a certain race is automatically not allowed to be critiqued. You shouldn’t treat different races differently.
