Update: All the respect I had for Gabbie for growing and reaching out and sending me this book? Gone. Completely. Straight after this video was published she went crying to our one and on my mutual friend about it in an attempt to guilt trip me and ask I not make anymore. I’m so over all that childish drama. You sent me a book, it got reviewed. That’s how the world works. Edit: My mistake, I misunderstood: she went crying to him about me making the review before I published it and he only told me after it was published. It was never explicitly said it was a guilt trip but I see no other reason for either of them to say any thing / reach out other than to get me to change / stop / take down my review. But it still stands that she reaches out to me and sent me her book with the implication that I’d review it and then cried to our only mutual friend about being ‘messed up’ over the fact I was reviewing it. I only did what she asked for and her going to Jimmy like that feels like an intentional way to stir the pot. A review is a review. I reviewed the book, not Gabbie. Telling me ‘Gabbie is scared of your review’ or whatever is not going to change the content of the book and therefore not going to change how I reviewed it. I stand by my review 100% but also feel incredibly manipulated and disgusted by this whole situation.
To be an artist you have to have an open heart and a thick skin. It's a little pathological that she is desperate for one critic to change their mind. It means deep down, you know what you did wasn't even enough for yourself. Art should be first and foremost for be for yourself and you shouldn't be doing it demanding others like it. Keep doing you Rachel. Not that you need my approval ;-)
I noticed that sometimes she does these things (like the move to send you the book despite your criticism) to show off how mature and self aware she is.

Start this by saying I never watch gabbie I came here from Trisha who I am a big fan of and she agrees w this girl. However All of her videos are negitive opinions on things . Gabbie’s loyal army of 12 year olds have descended. It’s so beyond disgusting. They look up to this woman, and she’s showing them to treat people terribly and respond to constructive criticism with vile hatred.
I think what's really interesting watching this video and being vaguely aware of the controversy is that this is actually a video of you sitting down and very thoughtfully analyzing her poetry. As an artist I can definitely understand not enjoying people criticizing the things that you're making, but at the same time this is actually a really thoughtful, detailed, and frankly strong critique of the work that I don't think is at all trying to attack her.
It’s clear Rachel was disappointed because she believes Gabbie can do better. You can’t be disappointed in someone you don’t believe in. It makes me uncomfortable, honestly, the way the story is getting twisted.

Clearly her poetry is meant to be bought only by her fans, but the point of books and poetry is that you shouldn’t need to be in her circle or know who she is to enjoy or be interested in the work. Sort of like how Taylor Swift did with her Lover album - she had elected one of her own diary pages to be included in the deluxe editions. Nothing really anything new, a lot of it was song lyrics she had written out but her fans LOVED them.
It's like Gabbie is a 14 year old who's just had her first "deep" thoughts and is amazed by her own wisdom and uniqueness but completely lacks actual experience and skill to develop that first thought any further.

Gabbie is excruciatingly narcissistic, and this is exactly what this was. She’s been openly dismissive of criticisms of her previous work, and she very obviously believes that her art (music too) is groundbreaking and deep as the sea. I doubt she expected Rachel to rip this one to shreds too.
Based on what Jessi Smiles said about her behavior during the course of their friendship, and the weird breakdown she had a few months ago, that's exactly what that was. She's incredibly petty and self-absorbed.
Or its a clever marketing gimmick. Rachel will trash it as usual, people will feel sorry and buy it out of pity or just to check and see if its really that bad. Either way she gets publicity and some sales.
I can’t imagine how hard it is for Gabbie to hear this stuff but...she should’ve heard it from her editor first. Clearly those around her are yes-men trying to get more money out of her audience without a care for quality. If she wanted to put out good work, she could, but she clearly just wants to write and do as she likes without being told any valid criticism of it. As soon as you start charging people money to see your art, it’s no longer just art to be critiqued (for its own sake) it’s a product to be reviewed (for consumers). I think that’s where a lot of people who’ve managed to make lucrative careers off their art get tripped up, but especially Gabbie, who as a UA-camr never needed to learn to deal with reviews the way filmmakers and authors do, and yet expects universal praise (or, at most, gentle compliment-sandwiches) just for putting out a product containing material she’s created in an area where she has zero experience. Just the audacity of her response is a little galling even when you know about the worst of Gabbie’s history.
This x1000. I'm sensitive to criticism, to the point where even gentle criticism sandwiched between compliments can crush my confidence for a while... but that's why it's SO important, as an artist, to have someone in your life who isn't afraid to tell you that your work is garbage lol. It saves you from hearing it from someone you might not want to hear it from, like an audience of hundreds or thousands of people all at once.

the thing that really gets under my skin re: gabbie's poetry is not that it's bad. everyone is entitled to write bad poetry, and everyone who writes good poetry spent a long time writing bad poetry first. the problem is her arrogance to believe that because she's managed to be monetarily successful in other creative ventures in her life, she can slap random words on a piece of paper and stick it on shelves for $20, and because it'll sell, the work was good. she clearly has no concept of the hours of work a professional poet will put into a single poem, of the years of practice and diligence that go into learning how to write poetry and then learning how to do it better, of how hard *actual* poets have to work to even have one poem published in a magazine or journal, let alone TWO entire collections in b&n and amazon. she thinks her work is publishable because she is a celebrity, and not because she has actual publishable material. if this were something she were taking seriously, she would have an editor or advisor to help her weed out the garbage and foster the poems that might actually be something someday. but this second collection proves that this isn't serious for her, that she's in it for the money, and that she loves playing at being An Artiste and not actually doing the hard, painful, sometimes annoying work of making art.
In my opinion her poetry is kinda bad. It seems as though she doesn't know much about poetry or techniques used in writing poetry. She just writing what comes to her mind and keeps it as her final draft.

And as far as I’ve heard apparently she did give credit to a couple of her sisters in the forward of this book for helping her with illustrations.

Having read Shakespeare, I don’t really get the appeal. Reading raw acting scripts in a mostly foreign dialect with no stage directions does not engage me at all. I do enjoy all of the dick and fart jokes for the groundlings (once you’ve spent way too long parsing through the language and cultural differences to justify the effort), but pandering to your audience doesn’t make you a genius. The sonnets are nice, and Billy had great technical skills, but eh, it just doesn’t do anything for me. To confirm your hypothesis, my poetry is terrible.

Here because gabbie has decided to throw a tantrum MONTHS later and....it seems maybe she hasn’t healed from any of her past trauma... this was a very well thought out review and I think the only “negativity” stems from Rachel being frustrated that it’s not better when gabbie has had the time to reflect on her previous work and it’s reception and the resources to improve.

I think poetry is one of the most difficult art forms out there. It's not something you can just throw down on paper and be automatically good at. Certainly, you can have a natural talent for wordsmithing, but crafting a good poem takes real dedication and focus.
as a person who practices many forms of art, including flatbrush, pointed brush, and pen calligraphy, drawing, playing 2 instruments, and a bit of writing, i disagree with your view. Poetry is a difficult art form, but so is any one of them. They all require countless hours of practice, 40 hours everyday some might say, to get good at. It’s debatable whether or not any of them could be mastered at all. Some approaches to creating art can be easier than others, perhaps but nothing eliminates the constant practice needed to improve or even just maintain your skill level. Poetry and other forms of creative writing are no exception to that in my opinion. Some languages and some forms make it easier to achieve given effects. I know this could sound like a copout: “they’re all equally hard in their own unique ways ✨✨✨ and let’s not think about difficulty ever again” - but i’m actually going for a very specific point here. Essentially when you progress as an artist, your critical skills grow together with your practical skills, so the barrier of proficiency or expertise/“mastery” is entirely arbitrary. We live under a globalised capitalist system where a lot of people dedicate their lives to certain art forms and so we kinda have benchmarks all the way up to the ‘lifetime dedication’ level. If you don’t know the names, you’ll just have to trust me on this statement; the calligraphic skill of Gerrit Noordzij and the improvisational skill of Chopin seem to me just as unattainable as the writing of any great writer, be it Ursula K. LeGuin, Madeline Miller, Osamu Dazai, Jane Austen, Patrick Rothfuss, J.R.R. Tolkien, or Gabriel García Márquez. If the arts allow you to put the same time and attention to understanding twenty-six letters as to using one hundred thousand words, it seems futile to compare the difficulty one craft to another; the learning only ends after one stops practicing or dies. i wish i could end this with that last sentence because i really like it, but i will back-paddle here a bit to say that i see where your point is coming from. We all wrote school essays and we all speak some language, so it may seem easier to do things with it than to start with a different form of art - but it’s not. In my opinion, this is where that argument ends; it’s not easier or harder, it requires just as much attention as any other domain of the arts or crafts. whew that was long
As someone who doesn't have a natural talent for anything other than breathing, I don't agree. Worldbuilding is just as hard as poetry and if someone has a natural talent for one, there is for sure someone who has a natural talent for the other.
Bruh I'm an english teacher and a student brought up Gabbie Hannah's poetry when I asked "does anyone know any famous poets?" for a poetry introduction class and I wanted to cry like please...
With what is being said, I was expecting a horrifically mean review attacking Gabbie as a person. I majored in creative writing, with a poetry emphasis. This review is right in line with how we peer reviewed and gave notes.
To someone unfamiliar with academic critique, I can see how it could be interpreted as “harsh”, but the point is to give honest feedback and tips for improving. Giving someone head pats and no advice on how to improve isn’t what a critique is. Gabbie felt nitpicked and interpreted that as being put down or mocked (tbf people actually did do this to Gabbie a lot around that time, nitpicking every little thing she said or did) and she lost her marbles. But she lost it on someone who was not nitpicking her personal life unfairly, just critiquing her work, and saw them as one and the same.
The thing is Gabbie does not know the first thing about poetry. It is pretty obvious, from her writing, that she doesn't read poetry either. I think she should take a couple university courses on poetry so she can understand everything that it takes to create poetry. She needs to get rid of the idea of it being shower thoughts that perhaps share a rhyme here and there. It's not really about the length, the topic or the rhymes. You can write a two line poem about an apple and yet it can have hours and hours of thought behind it, taking care of choosing the right sounds, the right words and the right arrangement. She never uses allegories, which I believe is essential. She doesn't give us anything to dig through. Anyway, I love watching your videos and the way you review her poetry because your argument is extremely well-exposed and based on actual poetic theory, not just what you like or dislike.

The saddest thing about this for me is that it's SO hard to get poetry published no matter the talent or dedication of the writer. Yet Gabbie gets to churn out these lazy, poorly written books and make a ton of money from it because she knows her impressionable young fans will buy anything she puts out.
Sorry but I don’t like your thought process. This feels like realist painters hating on abstract artists. You do not get to decide who deserves what. I’m sure anyone would do the same for money. Not everything has to have a deeper meaning. It is what it is.

One of the big rules of writing: Learn the rules so you can break them. You can read when someone accidently breaks the rules and when they do it with purpose.
Exactly! I’m studying video production in college and the same thing applies here. You learn the rules (like rule of thirds), understand those rules, and only after you really get them should you try and break them. Good art is not randomly doing things. If you want to break the rules you have to understand them so you break them for a good creative reason.

Honestly - why do you question why I care? You must have an idea of why I do care. It's likely the same reason you care. She's a public figure & we therefore are aware of her and her art. We form opinions. We dislike and like. Complain and defend. All very human things. I also used to be a fan. I have grown frustrated with what I perceive as a lack of insight and self awareness, something which I belive is reflected in her poetry. I feel she is not evolving, and that is frustrating to me. I got three words for Gabbie: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. I dont know why Gabbie, who clearly has room for improvement with her poetry, is trying to write a whole poetry BOOK. She’s taking on waaaay too much for where she’s currently at. If she took the same amount of effort it took her to write a whole poetry book, and just focused that into writing ONE good poem, or maybe FIVE good poems...maybe she’d create something truly valuable.
It takes real insight and courage to be able to say, “You know what, I’m not ready to write this yet,” and only come back to it when you ARE ready. I’ve recently had this realization over my novel, which is far too big of a project for lil 23 year old me to take on right now. I want to do it justice, and so I’ll wait. The problem here is that Gabbie doesn’t seem to care if it’s good content, just that it sells.
I think we all need to come to the conclusion that gabbie just doesn’t give a shit about poetry. She just wants two things: money and to get praise for being so “deep” and “well thought-out” like in the way twenty one pilots is praised for their clever and meaningful lyrics. It seems to me through gabbie’s poetry (and even music), she doesn’t actually care about the craft she just wants people to praise her. That’s why she’s always making these attempts to seem so deep but she doesn’t actually have these thoughts, ideas, feelings or even the creativity for any of the writing so it just comes off as a 2014 tumblr post.
She seems like she just really wants to be seen as an “artist” but I mean it seems like attention and praise are more important than serious creative endeavors

@Benjamin its all chill and good to write drunk poetry for your own enjoyment but it becomes a bit of an issue when you start letting people pay money for it before they read it and expect no one to critique it

It’s actually interesting that you bring up how much Gabbie tells instead of shows, because it reminds me of how in my Poetry Workshop class last semester we did an exercise that involves taking weak lines (things like “she was sad”) and making them stronger. I feel like Gabbie could really use that.
@@britneyspearsstan You stretch it out pretty much, use literary devices to show how the person is sad rather than just saying they’re sad. When I did the exercise I changed “she felt very sad” to “the sadness enveloped her like a blanket of spikes.” Not the most genius way to change it but there’s more there than there was before. When you leave a line at “she felt sad” you’re basically telling the reader that there’s nothing else to be inferred, which you don’t really want for a poem. While not all poetry has to be super deep, you still want something to be there.

Or perhaps Gabbie's book of poetry could be a teaching tool exactly like that. Purchase the book and then expand on the ideas to make more subtle, imagery driven poetry. A student exercise. Why does everything have to be so negative when someone creates something - imagine if we said to her hey Gabbie, I wasn't super keen on your poetry but I think it could be a great teaching tool for different kinds of poetry! Did you know you had this hidden talent? Instead of shitting all over her and just saying hey mate this is a pile of stink and no-one should bother reading it.
Gabbie’s publishers and editors CLEARLY kissed her ass for the money grab and told her her book was the literary masterpiece of the century. That’s why she is so darn SHOCKED that anyone could have any criticism of it.

i agree the fact that she sent it to u does show some growth and openness to criticism, but i’m really disappointed most of her poems still read like tweets. i thought from the first book she’d learn to give herself time to flesh out a poem instead of including it even if it’s half-baked for filler. there’s no shame in releasing a small poetry book! some of my fav poets books are only about 30 pages!
couldn't agree more! my current favourite poetry book is richard siken's crush, tiny, tiny collection, dug my heart out, threw it out the window, retrieved and repaired it a million different times and ways in very few pages. quality over quantity
It seems like her publishers give her a minimum page count to fill, and rather than use even a bit of her power and leverage to have them give her more leeway, she just pumps out a bunch of material without giving it a second look, and then packs the rest with filler, because it’s easier and requires less effort on her part.
I don’t think she sent it to you because she’s “grown” I think she knows any publicity is good publicity and knows she will continue to make money as long as people talk about her. Good or bad.
I agree. I think if she wanted constructive criticism she would have sent her work to people like Rachel beforehand to really make it the best it could be, not after it was published.
On the subject of structure, I'd like to point out that you can break from structure occasionally, but it must be on purpose. For example, possibly the most famous line from Romeo and Juliet, "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?" As mentioned, Shakespeare wrote in iambic pentameter, which mandates ten syllables per line. You may have already noticed the mistake. Ro(1)me(2)o(3), Ro(4)me(5)o(6), where(7)fore(8) art(9) thou(10), Ro(11)me(12)o(13) That line is 3 syllables too long. Shakespeare made a mistake. But wait--the 3 extra syllables are Romeo's name. And the next lines: "Deny thy father and refuse thy name.\ Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn, my love\ And I'll no longer be a Capulet." Juliet is pondering how Romeo's name is the only thing standing between them. The name is the issue, and the structure break reflects that. So yes, you can break structure. But it has to be in service of the narrative.
we must remember that not ALL of Shakespeare's work is in iambic pentameter, too. It was his preferred verse for poetry, but in his plays there's plenty of blank verse and prose as well.
I really appreciate this insight, my brain sort of weirdly understands structure a lot of the time but I can't necessarily identify what is working or not working or explain why. This is really interesting to me, I love literary analysis =)
when you were explaining how disappointed you were, and you sounded so close to crying, that's a 100% sign that you're not "bullying" her. you genuinely wanted too see her do better, and expressing your absolute disgust at the...waste of her work isnt bullying or harrassment. this gives those vibes when your parents are like "I'm not angry I'm just disappointed".

I heard of this video in one of Chad Chad's. I don't know Gabbie Hanna or her work and while I was watching this video I quickly forgot about her because the things pointed out here, the explanations, the arguments and little pieces of knowledge were simply amazing. I actually feel this urge to read some poetry, which I hope I won't do, but I definitely have to check out more of Rachel's videos. And I want to experiment with the use of rhythm in my emails at work...

One of my favorite authors, Jen Lancaster, actually wrote a memoir called “Stories I’d Tell In Bars” that she self-published and it ended up topping some amazon book charts for a short while during the time Gabbie was writing her book, so given Gabbie’s plagiarism track record I’m really side-eying her here. I’m not saying she definitively stole the title and “tweaked it”, but I also wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

I agree. A lot of artists nowadays start out just posting stuff online for free and once it starts getting recognised as being really good and something people will pay for, they then start selling it.

Besides, even if she wasn’t making enough money, it’s still unfair on actual poets who often spend their entire lives trying to get their work noticed, to just pay to get your shitty poetry on bookstore shelves when it has no right to be there.

Imagine if Gabbie just wrote haikus. They're short and basic but at least there would be structure, rhythm, and the semblance of effort put into creating them.
haikus also have to be incredibly thought out though, and using "showing" instead of telling (with metaphors and imagery), like what was talked about in this video. i feel like she'd either somehow write good haikus, or they'd still just be very average.

I remember some 28 odd years ago, been set a assignment by my English Literature teacher to write a short story/poem, but it had to be exact 50 words long, including the title. It took me an entire week to write, line by agonising line, only to discover that I was one word short. Trying to find that missing word fried my last remaining neuron, due to trying to get it to fit in with the rest, but somehow I got it in on time. I can't remember what grade I got for it, but from that moment onwards, I appreciated that truly great poetry, which lasts way beyond the lifetime of the author, is _incredibly_ difficult to write ...
I've been a subscriber of Rachel for about two years now since her "living with depression" video. I watched this video when it first released. After all the controversy, I came back to rewatch it. Rachel is a lovely woman who deeply cares and has a passion for poetry and literature. She does not deserve any of this backlash or hate. I feel like if she’d fleshed out “stories I have to get drunk to tell” and “letters to strangers” that couldve been a fairly interesting book on its own. Instead she used them as a shitty cash grab to encourage her young audience to buy every edition.

Yes! Like her poems have no definitive ending to the cadence or flow of it all. It’s just “da duh DA, da duh DA” over and over and then just ends underwhelming like a shitty movie.
Hence why I try not to live in an echo chamber. My FB feed is FILLED with conflicting opinions, and some I don’t agree with, but I try to see things from their POV or see where I might be wrong.

I think the problem with Gabby is she is going for a Shell Silverstein type of style without doing the legwork. Silverstein is full of small morsels and illustrations that play off the poems. The huge difference is Silverstein's poems all feel like they have been narrowed down over time to a small delicious bite... Rather then just randomly being thrown on the page.
Though Sir Silverstein has a lot of long poems that are actually really entertaining to read and short stories in them that are hilarious- my love and passion for poems started from him and seeing someone try to imitate his hard works by some flimsy words that can be found free on twitter really irritates my nerves haha- I really hope she can at least go to one literature class or meet with an actual person that has experience working in these fields so she could learn from them- because I'm a big fan of her story times, and don't really want her recognition to be thrown away y'know?

Before my PC went bang, not only did I have a folder full of sketch outlines for both fiction, and nonfiction, books I would love to write, but also three chapters of a novel I had begun sometime ago. Having done both English Literature at High School, but also English Language (taught not as a foreign language, but rather focusing on what constitutes verbs, adverbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives; grammar; punctuation; sentence construction; and even a certain degree of logic (how to construct an argument), especially as one part of the final exam was a aural one, in which you had to do a class presentation, followed by a Q&A by the class. I was marked on both my presentation, and how well I answered the questions posed), I know that not only the process of actual writing is hard, especially in establishing decent flow --- in both story, and character arc --- and maintaining continuity, and in-world logical consistency, but equally the editing. God-knows how many revisions I did, in just those three chapters alone, and, because I am trying to tie in with the real world, there are elements that, for various reasons, I have to go back over again, before I can start sketching out the next chapter, and those specific elements have changed and/or that something that I kinda envisioned, has become somewhat real, abet in no-where near the same, but just sufficiently enough that I can use in its stead. Fortunately --- for me at least --- the way my mind works is that I have an established beginning and end, but connecting the two --- the middle --- is the really hard part. Also, fortunately, whilst I don't normally back things up, I did do, in at least three other places, including a thumb drive. I want to build my own PC, as I have very specific specs I want, but, as Christmas is drawing near, hopefully component costs will drop in the New Year Sales. But I digress ... Quite likely, both Gabbie, and Onision, sent their respective manuscripts that print, rather than publish, their 'works'. I say print, because it's clear, especially with Onision's 'Reaper's Creek', that no-one proofread it, but rather the company just printed the physical books, plus putting it in a form of an eBook, as a file that can be read on a Kinder etc, quite literally as is, with no corrections ... and it shows, abet in the worse way possible ... My thinking is thus this: if I buy a copy of Onision's last book and see the difference in writing between his, and mine, if people were willing to pay for that crap, then there is surely an audience for your's, and mines, vastly better writing. Yes, getting rejected is hard, and even established authors have had problems getting their first book published. But once passed that hurdle, especially if it becomes a best-seller, then you can concentrate further on your writing, without necessarily worrying about the next one not being rejected ...

i fucking HAVE TO SAY THIS. *_Gabbie, for poetry's sake,_* if you're reading the comments, *please* read this i'm sorry i simply can't contain it but SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO USE LINE BREAKS. _which is a clear red flag she did not become more well-read in poetry / poetic craft in all the time she had to improve!_ she doesn't know what they are for. pressing enter between every couple of words in a [run-on] sentence does not = Poetry. you break the line after *certain* lines whose words will have *packed a punch* or made for a *rhythmic stop.* that way, by the end of the poem, every one of those stanzas or particular thoughts will have either... a.) had multiple meanings or evoked multiple feelings, thus giving SO much more to the poem's message/themes; b.) produced a song-like tone inside the reader's head to tie with / improve the poem's flow; c.) created imagery enough to paint a picture or develop little vignettes in the reader's mind, bringing the poem to life _visually_ or d.) really punched the reader in the GUT, because of the provoking diction used & thus the effective prose it made for. P.S.: poetry is STILL poetry without line breaks- it may, then, often become "prose-poetry" instead, which is just as beautiful as classic form. gabbie might even have done her work justice by not doing line breaks on many of these poems, because it would have shown each piece more clearly as poetically-devised streams of consciousness (which can be really fun to read, when/if they're self-aware) rather than what they attempted to be.. which would have done her an incredible favor when it came to the reviews and critique.
Aside from being critiqued so publicly, I'm slightly envious that her critiques are on UA-cam. Being able to play pause and replay useful comments and hearing others read her work, and be able to improve her skills in the future. On critique day IRL it's fleeting, it happens once, and then we have our notes and memory of what was said.

The thing is, I think Gabby could make a good poetry book. But first she would have to be able to understand the criticisms you and others make, and to understand why certain things work and other things don't. As she is right now, poetry feels like a cash grab for her, and as long as that's how she views it, she won't improve. But really, the bare bones are there. She just doesn't yet understand how to add meat to them. Also, I wrote this at the beginning of the video, so if it's similar to anything Rachel says later, it's pure coincidence.
I agree. I feel that Gabbie’s biggest downfall is that she is one of those people who jumps on to trends for the admiration, it’s always the next cool thing with her. Her poetry isn’t good because her heart and soul isn’t in it, she is too focused on selling a version of herself she thinks makes her seem cool to others. It’s a shame really.

Update: All the respect I had for Gabbie for growing and reaching out and sending me this book? Gone. Completely. Straight after this video was published she went crying to our one and on my mutual friend about it in an attempt to guilt trip me and ask I not make anymore. I’m so over all that childish drama. You sent me a book, it got reviewed. That’s how the world works.
Edit: My mistake, I misunderstood: she went crying to him about me making the review before I published it and he only told me after it was published. It was never explicitly said it was a guilt trip but I see no other reason for either of them to say any thing / reach out other than to get me to change / stop / take down my review. But it still stands that she reaches out to me and sent me her book with the implication that I’d review it and then cried to our only mutual friend about being ‘messed up’ over the fact I was reviewing it. I only did what she asked for and her going to Jimmy like that feels like an intentional way to stir the pot. A review is a review. I reviewed the book, not Gabbie. Telling me ‘Gabbie is scared of your review’ or whatever is not going to change the content of the book and therefore not going to change how I reviewed it. I stand by my review 100% but also feel incredibly manipulated and disgusted by this whole situation.

To be an artist you have to have an open heart and a thick skin. It's a little pathological that she is desperate for one critic to change their mind. It means deep down, you know what you did wasn't even enough for yourself. Art should be first and foremost for be for yourself and you shouldn't be doing it demanding others like it.

I think what's really interesting watching this video and being vaguely aware of the controversy is that this is actually a video of you sitting down and very thoughtfully analyzing her poetry. As an artist I can definitely understand not enjoying people criticizing the things that you're making, but at the same time this is actually a really thoughtful, detailed, and frankly strong critique of the work that I don't think is at all trying to attack her.

Gabbie is excruciatingly narcissistic, and this is exactly what this was. She’s been openly dismissive of criticisms of her previous work, and she very obviously believes that her art (music too) is groundbreaking and deep as the sea. I doubt she expected Rachel to rip this one to shreds too.

As soon as you start charging people money to see your art, it’s no longer just art to be critiqued (for its own sake) it’s a product to be reviewed (for consumers). I think that’s where a lot of people who’ve managed to make lucrative careers off their art get tripped up, but especially Gabbie, who as a UA-camr never needed to learn to deal with reviews the way filmmakers and authors do, and yet expects universal praise (or, at most, gentle compliment-sandwiches) just for putting out a product containing material she’s created in an area where she has zero experience. Just the audacity of her response is a little galling even when you know about the worst of Gabbie’s history.

I'm sensitive to criticism, to the point where even gentle criticism sandwiched between compliments can crush my confidence for a while... but that's why it's SO important, as an artist, to have someone in your life who isn't afraid to tell you that your work is garbage lol. It saves you from hearing it from someone you might not want to hear it from, like an audience of hundreds or thousands of people all at once.

the thing that really gets under my skin re: gabbie's poetry is not that it's bad. everyone is entitled to write bad poetry, and everyone who writes good poetry spent a long time writing bad poetry first. the problem is her arrogance to believe that because she's managed to be monetarily successful in other creative ventures in her life, she can slap random words on a piece of paper and stick it on shelves for $20, and because it'll sell, the work was good. she clearly has no concept of the hours of work a professional poet will put into a single poem, of the years of practice and diligence that go into learning how to write poetry and then learning how to do it better, of how hard *actual* poets have to work to even have one poem published in a magazine or journal, let alone TWO entire collections in b&n and amazon. she thinks her work is publishable because she is a celebrity, and not because she has actual publishable material. if this were something she were taking seriously, she would have an editor or advisor to help her weed out the garbage and foster the poems that might actually be something someday. but this second collection proves that this isn't serious for her, that she's in it for the money, and that she loves playing at being An Artiste and not actually doing the hard, painful, sometimes annoying work of making art.

And as far as I’ve heard apparently she did give credit to a couple of her sisters in the forward of this book for helping her with illustrations.

Having read Shakespeare, I don’t really get the appeal. Reading raw acting scripts in a mostly foreign dialect with no stage directions does not engage me at all. I do enjoy all of the dick and fart jokes for the groundlings (once you’ve spent way too long parsing through the language and cultural differences to justify the effort), but pandering to your audience doesn’t make you a genius. The sonnets are nice, and Billy had great technical skills, but eh, it just doesn’t do anything for me. To confirm your hypothesis, my poetry is terrible.

I think poetry is one of the most difficult art forms out there. It's not something you can just throw down on paper and be automatically good at. Certainly, you can have a natural talent for wordsmithing, but crafting a good poem takes real dedication and focus.
as a person who practices many forms of art, including flatbrush, pointed brush, and pen calligraphy, drawing, playing 2 instruments, and a bit of writing, i disagree with your view. Poetry is a difficult art form, but so is any one of them. They all require countless hours of practice, 40 hours everyday some might say, to get good at. It’s debatable whether or not any of them could be mastered at all. Some approaches to creating art can be easier than others, perhaps but nothing eliminates the constant practice needed to improve or even just maintain your skill level. Poetry and other forms of creative writing are no exception to that in my opinion. Some languages and some forms make it easier to achieve given effects.
I know this could sound like a copout: “they’re all equally hard in their own unique ways ✨✨✨ and let’s not think about difficulty ever again” - but i’m actually going for a very specific point here. Essentially when you progress as an artist, your critical skills grow together with your practical skills, so the barrier of proficiency or expertise/“mastery” is entirely arbitrary. We live under a globalised capitalist system where a lot of people dedicate their lives to certain art forms and so we kinda have benchmarks all the way up to the ‘lifetime dedication’ level. If you don’t know the names, you’ll just have to trust me on this statement; the calligraphic skill of Gerrit Noordzij and the improvisational skill of Chopin seem to me just as unattainable as the writing of any great writer, be it Ursula K. LeGuin, Madeline Miller, Osamu Dazai, Jane Austen, Patrick Rothfuss, J.R.R. Tolkien, or Gabriel García Márquez. If the arts allow you to put the same time and attention to understanding twenty-six letters as to using one hundred thousand words, it seems futile to compare the difficulty one craft to another; the learning only ends after one stops practicing or dies.
i wish i could end this with that last sentence because i really like it, but i will back-paddle here a bit to say that i see where your point is coming from. We all wrote school essays and we all speak some language, so it may seem easier to do things with it than to start with a different form of art - but it’s not. In my opinion, this is where that argument ends; it’s not easier or harder, it requires just as much attention as any other domain of the arts or crafts.

To be fair, you said famous, not respected.
With what is being said, I was expecting a horrifically mean review attacking Gabbie as a person. I majored in creative writing, with a poetry emphasis. This review is right in line with how we peer reviewed and gave notes.
Yeah I wasn't expecting this. She did great in this review and was very nice and her critique.
To someone unfamiliar with academic critique, I can see how it could be interpreted as “harsh”, but the point is to give honest feedback and tips for improving. Giving someone head pats and no advice on how to improve isn’t what a critique is. Gabbie felt nitpicked and interpreted that as being put down or mocked (tbf people actually did do this to Gabbie a lot around that time, nitpicking every little thing she said or did) and she lost her marbles. But she lost it on someone who was not nitpicking her personal life unfairly, just critiquing her work, and saw them as one and the same.
The thing is Gabbie does not know the first thing about poetry. It is pretty obvious, from her writing, that she doesn't read poetry either. I think she should take a couple university courses on poetry so she can understand everything that it takes to create poetry. She needs to get rid of the idea of it being shower thoughts that perhaps share a rhyme here and there. It's not really about the length, the topic or the rhymes. You can write a two line poem about an apple and yet it can have hours and hours of thought behind it, taking care of choosing the right sounds, the right words and the right arrangement. She never uses allegories, which I believe is essential. She doesn't give us anything to dig through. Anyway, I love watching your videos and the way you review her poetry because your argument is extremely well-exposed and based on actual poetic theory, not just what you like or dislike.

One of the big rules of writing: Learn the rules so you can break them. You can read when someone accidently breaks the rules and when they do it with purpose.
Exactly! I’m studying video production in college and the same thing applies here. You learn the rules (like rule of thirds), understand those rules, and only after you really get them should you try and break them. Good art is not randomly doing things. If you want to break the rules you have to understand them so you break them for a good creative reason.

i think its more her lack of self awareness that comes from being somewhat unhinged. something unknown has fucked her up badly at some point it would seem

Honestly - why do you question why I care? You must have an idea of why I do care. It's likely the same reason you care. She's a public figure & we therefore are aware of her and her art. We form opinions. We dislike and like. Complain and defend. All very human things.
I also used to be a fan. I have grown frustrated with what I perceive as a lack of insight and self awareness, something which I belive is reflected in her poetry. I feel she is not evolving, and that is frustrating to me. Do you understand better now?
I got three words for Gabbie: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. I dont know why Gabbie, who clearly has room for improvement with her poetry, is trying to write a whole poetry BOOK. She’s taking on waaaay too much for where she’s currently at.
If she took the same amount of effort it took her to write a whole poetry book, and just focused that into writing ONE good poem, or maybe FIVE good poems...maybe she’d create something truly valuable.
It takes real insight and courage to be able to say, “You know what, I’m not ready to write this yet,” and only come back to it when you ARE ready.
I’ve recently had this realization over my novel, which is far too big of a project for lil 23 year old me to take on right now. I want to do it justice, and so I’ll wait. The problem here is that Gabbie doesn’t seem to care if it’s good content, just that it sells.

I think we all need to come to the conclusion that gabbie just doesn’t give a shit about poetry. She just wants two things: money and to get praise for being so “deep” and “well thought-out” like in the way twenty one pilots is praised for their clever and meaningful lyrics. It seems to me through gabbie’s poetry (and even music), she doesn’t actually care about the craft she just wants people to praise her. That’s why she’s always making these attempts to seem so deep but she doesn’t actually have these thoughts, ideas, feelings or even the creativity for any of the writing so it just comes off as a 2014 tumblr post.

It’s actually interesting that you bring up how much Gabbie tells instead of shows, because it reminds me of how in my Poetry Workshop class last semester we did an exercise that involves taking weak lines (things like “she was sad”) and making them stronger. I feel like Gabbie could really use that.

@@britneyspearsstan You stretch it out pretty much, use literary devices to show how the person is sad rather than just saying they’re sad. When I did the exercise I changed “she felt very sad” to “the sadness enveloped her like a blanket of spikes.” Not the most genius way to change it but there’s more there than there was before.
When you leave a line at “she felt sad” you’re basically telling the reader that there’s nothing else to be inferred, which you don’t really want for a poem. While not all poetry has to be super deep, you still want something to be there.

Why does everything have to be so negative when someone creates something - imagine if we said to her hey Gabbie, I wasn't super keen on your poetry but I think it could be a great teaching tool for different kinds of poetry! Did you know you had this hidden talent? Instead of shitting all over her and just saying hey mate this is a pile of stink and no-one should bother reading it.
Gabbie’s publishers and editors CLEARLY kissed her ass for the money grab and told her her book was the literary masterpiece of the century. That’s why she is so darn SHOCKED that anyone could have any criticism of it.

i agree the fact that she sent it to u does show some growth and openness to criticism, but i’m really disappointed most of her poems still read like tweets. i thought from the first book she’d learn to give herself time to flesh out a poem instead of including it even if it’s half-baked for filler. there’s no shame in releasing a small poetry book! some of my fav poets books are only about 30 pages!
couldn't agree more! my current favourite poetry book is richard siken's crush, tiny, tiny collection, dug my heart out, threw it out the window, retrieved and repaired it a million different times and ways in very few pages. quality over quantity
It seems like her publishers give her a minimum page count to fill, and rather than use even a bit of her power and leverage to have them give her more leeway, she just pumps out a bunch of material without giving it a second look, and then packs the rest with filler, because it’s easier and requires less effort on her part.

On the subject of structure, I'd like to point out that you can break from structure occasionally, but it must be on purpose. For example, possibly the most famous line from Romeo and Juliet, "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?"
As mentioned, Shakespeare wrote in iambic pentameter, which mandates ten syllables per line. You may have already noticed the mistake.
Ro(1)me(2)o(3), Ro(4)me(5)o(6), where(7)fore(8) art(9) thou(10), Ro(11)me(12)o(13)
That line is 3 syllables too long. Shakespeare made a mistake. But wait--the 3 extra syllables are Romeo's name. And the next lines: "Deny thy father and refuse thy name.\ Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn, my love\ And I'll no longer be a Capulet." Juliet is pondering how Romeo's name is the only thing standing between them. The name is the issue, and the structure break reflects that.
So yes, you can break structure. But it has to be in service of the narrative.

we must remember that not ALL of Shakespeare's work is in iambic pentameter, too. It was his preferred verse for poetry, but in his plays there's plenty of blank verse and prose as well.

I heard of this video in one of Chad Chad's. I don't know Gabbie Hanna or her work and while I was watching this video I quickly forgot about her because the things pointed out here, the explanations, the arguments and little pieces of knowledge were simply amazing. I actually feel this urge to read some poetry, which I hope I won't do, but I definitely have to check out more of Rachel's videos. And I want to experiment with the use of rhythm in my emails at work...
I also came from Chad Chad's video, I had literally no idea who either Rachel or Gabbie was before that, but this is the most polite, sincere and delicate review I have EVER seen

One of my favorite authors, Jen Lancaster, actually wrote a memoir called “Stories I’d Tell In Bars” that she self-published and it ended up topping some amazon book charts for a short while during the time Gabbie was writing her book, so given Gabbie’s plagiarism track record I’m really side-eying her here. I’m not saying she definitively stole the title and “tweaked it”, but I also wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

I always like to think that if poetry was the highest form of literature, the haikus are the highest form of poetry, because to write one is so damn hard ...
I remember some 28 odd years ago, been set a assignment by my English Literature teacher to write a short story/poem, but it had to be exact 50 words long, including the title.
It took me an entire week to write, line by agonising line, only to discover that I was one word short. Trying to find that missing word fried my last remaining neuron, due to trying to get it to fit in with the rest, but somehow I got it in on time.
I can't remember what grade I got for it, but from that moment onwards, I appreciated that truly great poetry, which lasts way beyond the lifetime of the author, is _incredibly_ difficult to write ...
She has written a few haikus in her last book....... she couldnt even do that

I think the problem with Gabby is she is going for a Shell Silverstein type of style without doing the legwork. Silverstein is full of small morsels and illustrations that play off the poems. The huge difference is Silverstein's poems all feel like they have been narrowed down over time to a small delicious bite... Rather then just randomly being thrown on the page.

Though Sir Silverstein has a lot of long poems that are actually really entertaining to read and short stories in them that are hilarious- my love and passion for poems started from him and seeing someone try to imitate his hard works by some flimsy words that can be found free on twitter really irritates my nerves haha- I really hope she can at least go to one literature class or meet with an actual person that has experience working in these fields so she could learn from them- because I'm a big fan of her story times, and don't really want her recognition to be thrown away y'know?

Before my PC went bang, not only did I have a folder full of sketch outlines for both fiction, and nonfiction, books I would love to write, but also three chapters of a novel I had begun sometime ago. Having done both English Literature at High School, but also English Language (taught not as a foreign language, but rather focusing on what constitutes verbs, adverbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives; grammar; punctuation; sentence construction; and even a certain degree of logic (how to construct an argument), especially as one part of the final exam was a aural one, in which you had to do a class presentation, followed by a Q&A by the class. I was marked on both my presentation, and how well I answered the questions posed), I know that not only the process of actual writing is hard, especially in establishing decent flow --- in both story, and character arc --- and maintaining continuity, and in-world logical consistency, but equally the editing. God-knows how many revisions I did, in just those three chapters alone, and, because I am trying to tie in with the real world, there are elements that, for various reasons, I have to go back over again, before I can start sketching out the next chapter, and those specific elements have changed and/or that something that I kinda envisioned, has become somewhat real, abet in no-where near the same, but just sufficiently enough that I can use in its stead.
Fortunately --- for me at least --- the way my mind works is that I have an established beginning and end, but connecting the two --- the middle --- is the really hard part.
Also, fortunately, whilst I don't normally back things up, I did do, in at least three other places, including a thumb drive. I want to build my own PC, as I have very specific specs I want, but, as Christmas is drawing near, hopefully component costs will drop in the New Year Sales.
But I digress ...
Quite likely, both Gabbie, and Onision, sent their respective manuscripts that print, rather than publish, their 'works'. I say print, because it's clear, especially with Onision's 'Reaper's Creek', that no-one proofread it, but rather the company just printed the physical books, plus putting it in a form of an eBook, as a file that can be read on a Kinder etc, quite literally as is, with no corrections ... and it shows, abet in the worse way possible ...
My thinking is thus this: if I buy a copy of Onision's last book and see the difference in writing between his, and mine, if people were willing to pay for that crap, then there is surely an audience for your's, and mines, vastly better writing.
Yes, getting rejected is hard, and even established authors have had problems getting their first book published. But once passed that hurdle, especially if it becomes a best-seller, then you can concentrate further on your writing, without necessarily worrying about the next one not being rejected ...

i fucking HAVE TO SAY THIS. *_Gabbie, for poetry's sake,_* if you're reading the comments, *please* read this
i'm sorry i simply can't contain it but SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO USE LINE BREAKS. _which is a clear red flag she did not become more well-read in poetry / poetic craft in all the time she had to improve!_ she doesn't know what they are for. pressing enter between every couple of words in a [run-on] sentence does not = Poetry. you break the line after *certain* lines whose words will have *packed a punch* or made for a *rhythmic stop.* that way, by the end of the poem, every one of those stanzas or particular thoughts will have either...
a.) had multiple meanings or evoked multiple feelings, thus giving SO much more to the poem's message/themes;
b.) produced a song-like tone inside the reader's head to tie with / improve the poem's flow;
c.) created imagery enough to paint a picture or develop little vignettes in the reader's mind, bringing the poem to life _visually_
or d.) really punched the reader in the GUT, because of the provoking diction used & thus the effective prose it made for.
P.S.: poetry is STILL poetry without line breaks- it may, then, often become "prose-poetry" instead, which is just as beautiful as classic form. gabbie might even have done her work justice by not doing line breaks on many of these poems, because it would have shown each piece more clearly as poetically-devised streams of consciousness (which can be really fun to read, when/if they're self-aware) rather than what they attempted to be.. which would have done her an incredible favor when it came to the reviews and critique.

Aside from being critiqued so publicly, I'm slightly envious that her critiques are on UA-cam. Being able to play pause and replay useful comments and hearing others read her work, and be able to improve her skills in the future. On critique day IRL it's fleeting, it happens once, and then we have our notes and memory of what was said.

life hack: your phone probably has a record function. i switch it on when i feel myself starting to dissociate in lectures and it records everything very intelligibly, and then it's good for safekeeping.

The thing is, I think Gabby could make a good poetry book. But first she would have to be able to understand the criticisms you and others make, and to understand why certain things work and other things don't. As she is right now, poetry feels like a cash grab for her, and as long as that's how she views it, she won't improve. But really, the bare bones are there. She just doesn't yet understand how to add meat to them.
Also, I wrote this at the beginning of the video, so if it's similar to anything Rachel says later, it's pure coincidence.

I agree. I feel that Gabbie’s biggest downfall is that she is one of those people who jumps on to trends for the admiration, it’s always the next cool thing with her. Her poetry isn’t good because her heart and soul isn’t in it, she is too focused on selling a version of herself she thinks makes her seem cool to others. It’s a shame really.

@@caseyw.6550 I don't think it's shown in this 'poetry' book, but I do think she has the potential. If she took the time to actually learn, I do think she could write a decent poem. But I agree she really didn't do herself any favors with this book.

This is completely right - if she truly cared about creating impactful, resonant art, and she knows about Rachel’s poetic skill, she’d ask her for tips instead of a (good) review.

I don't think she sent you her book so you could review it; she sent it to you (with a friendly personal note) so you would feel too guilty to review it.
I think so too honestly. Kinda reminds me of how Shane Dawson bought his critic ("hater") a car, then the person can't say anything too bad without making themself look bad.
