Are you picking up the Sony 200-600mm for birds?
Already did in December as Sony Australia was having a cashback promotion. It was worth every cent. I use it with my A7R3. Not sure if I should get an A73 or a A6100 for better AF. Still holding off my purchase as I am waiting for your full in-depth review. Thanks
my current setup A9 / 200-600G with 1.4 tc. check my IG Fitz_Michael
Yes, I have the 200-600 and the Sony A7III Instagram Wonderful.earths I love your channel. One question please, did you record those birds in flight in the video with the 200-600, if so could you make a tutorial about the focus and the settings, or perhaps let us kniow here in the comments? thanks fos such a great content. Greetings from Colombia.
I got the lens to and its great for birds thats for sure! nice video Stefan :)
Yes, I have got it, so my Sony set are almost complete with Sony A7RIV, Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 and Sony 135mm 1.8 GM. I might get a Voigtländer APO-Lanthar Macro 65mm 2.0 and maybe a 35mm lens (one of the a least 25 available now).
Dude this video is quality!!! So great seeing you out shooting, inspiring! Keep up the great content 🙌 just what I wanted to see 🙂
Just got this lens literally yesterday
So lucky to see so many beautiful birds and get some great shots!!!
Nice Rough-legged Hawk (white head and black belly). Bird on the log is a Red-tailed Hawk (Immature don't have red tail)
I have the lens for about a year now and I love it. Great video. Cheers.
Some great shots mate, beautiful birds. The footage of the owl was cool
Nice video. ISO is tricky but your advice is good. A friendly piece of advice: put your Peak Design clips on the lens, not the camera in this case. Lens is the big load and should be the point of attachment. You can damage your camera ring in your setup. Cheers.
Good tips, thanks for the video
Great video! It’s a fun lens for sure!
Fabulous lens a must for Sony users into wildlife 👍😍
Nice film! Some solid tips! I subbed
I've just sent this review to a birding friend of mine. He's been on the fence about this one for a while now.
Wonderful advices there, I should follow them. Although a7S III isn't the ideal camera for photography it should have the least concern about ISO.
I've been using the Nikon 200-500mm hooked to the A6600 with an adapter. I'll be renting the Sony this week (2/1/2021) and give it a go for a week. I use both Sony and Nikon quite often. I've obtained some wonderful results with my current combo but do miss the 600 reach. We will see what transpires.
I shoot Nikon but I like your content a lot. No typical Sony jingoism is refreshing!
Thinking of getting this lens..
Bingo.
Yep. Great lens. Surprisingly, I’m able to hand hold it.
while shooting birds what image stabilization mode did you used? that lens has 3. thanks a lot fot the review
Shutter speed really matters and Is the key to sharp shots. The world is full of soft, noise free images.
How is Brunswick these days? It was amazing for my three trips in December but mid-Jan I had a bust of a day. Are the owls gone now?
I've had the 200-600 since it was released and it is a superb lens. Even up against my 600GM it holds it own for IQ.
You seem like a great guy to hang out with - thanks for the vid!
I came from Canon 1D IV and 300 f2.8 to a Sony A9 but so far I only have the 70-200 GM. Am looking a something longer although a little put off by the slowness of the 200-600. It does seem a decent lens though. Can get one new now for £1440 so might take the plunge - there's little else at that price point :)
I chase hummingbirds with the 200-600. I hook it up to either an A7R3 or a6600, depending on my mood. Using this on a high pixel count sensor really brightens up the image and allows for some serious cropping. With IBIS and OSS, you can get some great photos hand held. I use a tripod when photographing hummingbirds. The setup gets heavy and I will shake after a while. Another factor that makes this a 'superior' lens is the internal zooming. Trust me, it's a lot better than the traditional way with the extending barrel. There is no effort zooming level, up or down. It's perfect.
Magnificent
hi im alex not a pro but a very passionate severely sight impaired/blind photographer i use nikon mirrorless as moment but have just purchased used sony a9 mki abd sony 200-600 mm lens any tips and what camera do u use and do u use this lens too and what bag do u use to carry gear as well if ok to ask
My favourite lens. It is almost always the one mounted on my a7iii. Love the images and the relatively light weight of this lens. The minimum focusing distance is not amazing. I have missed shots of birds suddenly landing beside me because of that. But most of the time wildlife are far away and this lens is just great. My a7iii though misfocus a lot when birds are flying near the water but I am a hobbyist so it is still fun
Thanks for sharing your experience 😀
Video claimed the minimum focusing distance is 8 feet. How are you getting this close to wildlife? Are you shooting birds in cages?
@@festerbestertester1658 when sitting in hides or when you set up feeders. This lens gives you max 0.2x magnification which is not great in these scenarios. This is where the 100-400 shines. Otherwise it is a great lens. It is my go to lens in fact
that albino bird looks like a rough-legged hawk to me, maybe a light morph
Yes, it is a Rough-legged Hawk :)
Anyone recommend a over the shoulder strap for this lens mounted on a Sony a7iii. I'm using an old OP/TECH which is making me VERY nervous. Have an old Blackrapid but nowhere to mount on the lens itself due to having an arca-swiss plate on the lens foot.
Merlin Bird ID app is great to help ID birds
Ordered mine to go with my A7iii
Lack of constant aperture is not a big deal today. Back in the day of all-manual film cameras it was, because if you zoomed, you had to adjust your exposure to compensate for the change in effective aperture. Once the automatic exposure cameras became available, non-constant aperture was no longer an issue. Today our cameras not only can automatically change their shutter speeds or apertures, they can also change their ISO - and they have BIS! So don't sweat the lack of a constant aperture. I would take IQ and low cost if either (or both) had to be sacrificed for a constant aperture - its just not worth it. (Yes, there are some types of shooting that a constant aperture would be nice, but if you don't shoot like that, you won't miss it.)
Still contemplating if I should get a 100-400 or 200-600. This video kind of helped
Check out my buying guide on the two!
@@StefanMalloch I have! I think I’m going to stick with the 100-400
I thought the TC didn’t work with the 200-600? Can you use the 2x and the 1.4 with this?
Great vlog and thanks!! Jase
yes you can use both 1.4X and 2X with the 200-600mm . Depending on your camera model the PDAF works in AF- down to f11 on the A7RIV and down to f16 on the A9/A9II, and down to f22 on the upcoming A1. So when you use the 2x you will stop down two stops and maybe be out of your camera's PDAF limit, but you can still use contrast AF or manual focus. I have the 200-600mm and use it with both teleconverters on both my A9 and my A7RIV.
@@6gwilliams thanks mate! 👍
i use the 1.4 and the 2.0 teleconverters on the A7iii with the 200-600 obviously reliant upon the light but I shoot up to 10,000 iso and get it back somewhat in lightroom, great review of a fantastic lens. would love to see that lot in 1 days outing.
Can you do an indept review of this lens paired with a Sony aps-c a6xxx camera?? Hard to find any of these here on UA-cam..greetings from Ron, Amsterdam, Holland
it works great, I have 6600, a7r4 w/200-600, I use a6600 most of the time
I'll throw my experience of both in the review coming up!
I ordered the A1, and iam thinking 600mm or 200-600mm. The 600 is a massive money. After this viedeo, decision is now clear
Good👍👏👏👏👏
this is a great review and great pics. happy to see you stopped with the giveaway BS
Thanks dude. What giveaway BS? I have given away a ton of stuff and will continue to do so. I get quite a bit of stuff sent to me that I don't need or have multiples of. Email me, your BS comment just earned you a giveaway! HAHA! SPITE! 👊
@@StefanMalloch in previous videos you seemed to always finish with you giving away a Viltrox 85 mm lens, im happy to see that you have stopped doing so, i think your channel and your content is great and i don't see you needing to giveaway free stuff and trying to grow your channel by offering free stuff.
You shooting manual ? Are you using auto iso ?
The second my sigma 100-400 is sold, Im off to the shop for the Sony 200-600
Aaaaaaand you just answered in the video (auto iso) :D
Do you have a bag that fits the lens+camera with hood attached? Not reversed.
No
What Sony model are you using Stefan?
A7iii
I've been shooting with this lens for about 8 months--thousands of shots. It's capable of getting some tack sharp images; simply amazing. But for every one of those, I'm probably deleting 10-20 pics simply because the lens refuses to focus; maybe even more. For 10 years prior to this, I was using a much less advanced lens (also much cheaper) from another manufacturer that produce images that were just as good as I get with this lens, and was much more consistent. If I could go back and do it again, I wouldn't buy this lens.
I would send it back or in for repair if that isint an option. Should be getting much better results. What camera?
Boa tarde , estou pensando em comprar uma Sony 70 200 f2.8 para paisagem e pássaros , vc tem alguma experiência com el,o que vc me diz a respeito?
Do not wear it with the strap on the camera, get the strap on the lens ! The pale "Eagle" was a Rough-legged Hawh :)
Stefan, i just got this lens. I live in the same area, can i come with you sometime?
For sure. Hit me up on Instagram 👊
I’d love to hang out with you sometime.
photography is all about patience
Hi Stephan I’m not sure where you are in the world you are but that bird of prey might have been a Marsh Harrier.
Cool thanks! Im in BC Canada.
Hmmmm....... I wouldn't want to damage my lens mount swinging a heavy lens off the front of it......
Great video but please attach the strap to the lens not the camera, real risk of ripping the mount out carrying it like that.
That's a Rough-Legged Hawk
Thanks Ricky Bobby, it was huge! Shake & Bake
A juvenile light morph rough-legged hawk!
Can’t be the best Sony birding lens when there’s a $13,000 upgrade.
Yeah I think he was unconsciously referring to Zooms only.
.... please please attach the camera strap to the heavy lens and not to the camera
Puts excessive strain on the camera mount
I have a side strap that I attach to both the lens and camera. Nice for the few times I fat finger the lens release and feel comfortable that both are safe from falling.
