My wife and daughter gave me this lens as a gift for my 60th birthday last month. Let’s just say that I almost fell off my chair when I opened it. I’ve gotten a chance to put it through its paces recently and I can confirm that this lens is a beast! Razor sharp and fast! If you are a Sony shooter and are into wildlife or sports, I agree with Stefan that this one is a definite buy. You will not be disappointed. Keep up the great content Stefan!
Saving up for it for plane spotting
I've bought this lens for my Christmas, and sincerely, no regrets ! It's heavy for me, but I love his range of capabilities for wildlife and sports, even for landscapes in my mountains 😀
I bought this lens last year based on a previous recommendation in one of your videos comparing it to the 100-400gm. Since then it has rarely left my camera. Thank you for your great work!
I've had this lens since last summer and use it along the A7III. All I have to say is this lens is AMAZING. I use it mainly for aviation, sports, astro and car photography and the results I get are beautiful. If you are 2nd guessing on buying this lens, DON'T! Buy this lens RIGHT NOW!
Thanks for the review!!
I got this lense 3 Months ago after seeing this video. Absolutely in love with it
Nice review!
Great video!
Finally we get to watch the full review :D
IT NEVER STOPS RAINING!!! 😂
Wow its a beast bro..I love it😍
I use this for Marching Band work, a fantastic lens to get back-of-the-field shots of individuals.
Thanks so much for the review! Will someday treat myself to this lens. Will forever miss the double eagle shot I wasn't able to cleanly reach with just the sel70350 on my a6500
Very helpful and thorough review! I'd like to try this lens out on the FX6 and see what kind of video I can get. Thanks!
thanks for the review...
Got this for A6400. One thing I am doing is replacing the foot with one by Wimberley (Ap-620). Looked at several different ones and this one came out of top. It fixes to the lens using allen screws instead of a hand knob; leaving it on all the time. This allows for a more solid attachment to a tripod using the ARCA-swiss dovetail and effectively keys in and aligns the lens inherently. In addition, a clear 95mm protection filter is a must to protect the front element and to keep dirt and fingerprints off the front element. I got one from B&W. Thanks for the no-nonsense review.
Nice test page 👍 :)
Fantastic review! I own it and never leaves the Sony A7RIV! Gives me extra extra reach and great image quality, no compatibility issues at all in my case. Truly enjoying it! Definite buy, totally agreed!
was literally just looking at this lens!!!
A great lens for birds on my A7RIII -love it! I have also the lighter 70-350 Sony lens on the same camera!
Great review. Very beautifully organized, this whole review has been. This is the first time I saw a video of yours. Impressive. I give you ⭐⭐⭐⭐ & 1/2 stars out of 5.
I've been a Canon user, but now with plans to switch to Mirrorless, I'm leaning towards Sony, especially because of this particular lens and the new 14mm wide-angle. And also the Sony AlV. body. Cheers. 👍
Thanks my friend
Great lens best in its type I would suggest! I use it all the time for my wildlife Awesome !👍👍👍
I just bought it a couple of days ago and i totally agree with you. I hade some difficultys with geting the 100% sharpnes when laing on the ground with snow and smale birds, but this is popably cause of the quite old A7 (Most of the time like 2 or 3 cm of fokus). But even through i already got a number of awsome and increadeble sharp shots. So defininietly recomende it.
Addendum: flying storks are definitely not a problem
wow awesome lens! enjoy!
I bet you’d love to take this to the Serengeti! I know I would!
Only mirrorless lens like this on any system. I love it.
Hey I’m selling my canon R6 with the battery grip and two canon batteries the new ones also with boxes and all original accessories how much should I sell it for? I was thinking 3200
I purchased this lens last year, moving up from a Sigma 150-600 Canon EF Mount with Sigma MC-11 adapter. Image quality is amazing, far better than the Sigma, plus the Sony has internal focusing, making it easier to balance on a gimbal. Despite the weight, this is my "walking around" lens.
Went owl photography the last couple with days with my 70-200mm, and it's not cutting it, I'm going to upgrade to this one
I wish Canon would make more internal zoom Zoom Teles for the RF lenses
It is the internal zoom design with the smooth and short throw which is pushing me to go with Sony as opposed to staying with Canon. Personally, I would rather shoot with the FE 200-600mm over the Canon RF 100-500mm which is an external zoom with a much stiffer and longer throw. And did I mention the Canon is over US$1.4K more expensive than the Sony? That is just massively overpriced.
great review
This lens has good AF when it knows where to focus at. When going from min focus distance to infinity I wish it was faster. That’s why I got problems with birds in flight. Sharpness is great.
Try using the focus limiter, if you're going for more distant birds, it helped me get a lot better tracking capabilities.
thank you for the extremely nice presentation of the performance of the lens, I have a Nikon Z9 and would use this lens with the ETZ21 adapter . Do you have any experience or recommandations ?. Marjan
I own this lens and for my a7iii and it is amazing.
Quick question if you don't mind. I'm fairly new to photography, 6 months, and I want to upgrade from my MFT to full frame. I photograph a lot of birds and also fighter jets that fly over my house all day. I've gotten some good shots with my panasonic G9 but the autofocus isn't really the greatest plus it's only 20mp so cropping in too much really sucks. How is the autofocus on the Sony a7iii? Actually looking at the a7riiiA.
@@highwayman1224 I have this combination of A7iii and 200-600 lens. For aviation it is superb. Autofocus is fast and accurate. You won’t regret it. I have got some awesome shots of British fast jets close to my home. Take care when hand holding it. I have developed tennis elbow injury purely from use of this lens. I now have a monopole which eases the load.
@@paulagibbs9076 since posting that question I ended up getting an a7riiiA and 200-600mm. Fantastic combination!
Nice breakdown. I dunno. I'm still glad I went with the 100-400 GM with the teleconverter over this one. It just seems to suit me better for portability and versatility since I'll use it for landscape as well. That said, for pure wildlife photography, I'm debating whether the better option would be to eventually get this lens and the a1, or to just say f-it and stick with the RIII, but save up some coin and get the 600 f/4. Can probably do one or the other, but not both haha.
If budget isint an issue buy both, if you can only have one and you're a birder, the big one. If you shoot everything, cant beat the 100-400!
I have used the Sigma 150-600mm Canon with MC-11 adaptor. Can you please tell me how it differs from Sigma? Is it better in focus and picture quality compare to the sigma?
I used it for all purposes, from fault"macro"/street/aviation/portrait/architecture/natural scene.....and wildlife and sports of course!
Whats the sweet spot on this lens?
Hey Stefan are you satisfied with the PD aluminum tripod?
Love it! Ill review it shortly
Nice review! What do you think about sigma 150-600 canon + mc11 vs Sony 200-600. I have Sony a6400 for wildlife and birds. What are you views about this? Does the upgrade worth it?
Check out my review on the 150-600.. I had that setup long ago and it doesn't compete with this lens. For a lot better results and reliability, stick to native!
@@StefanMalloch thanks for the information 😊
mines not brilliant at really long range, im assuming its atmospheric factors, much better at medium distance
Nice review video. I suppose you were joking when you were saying you wish it was a constant aperture. Imagine how big it would be if it were a 200-600mm f4. It would cost a fortune.
Not at all. F5.6 like Nikons 200-500mm was a go to and didn't really sacrifice in size. F4 is out of the question for the foreseeable future lol
Just bought this lens, and reckon you do not have to take pictures of just birds, animals at a long distance?
I gonna buy this lens to complete my 70-200Gm for wildlife 😉
I barely pick up my 70200GM after buying this.
@@RakibulIslam-cx5gj i gess but sometimes I work with hides and the 2.8 is a big advantage in early morning 😉
I also have the 70-200 GM and considering this lens fir owls with my A9. Did you get it - how are you finding it?
If I remember correctly, you had done a review of the Sigma 150-600mm C. I have the Sigma and using it with the Sony a6100 (with MC-11). How does this Sony lens compare against the Sigma? I know the Sigma is less than half the Sony price.
You can still get some great images with an adapter but your AF speed, consistency and keepers will be many times better with a native lens. If the budget allows, there is no question, buy the native.
@@StefanMalloch Thank you so much!
How does the sharpness compare to the sigma 100-400? Is there a big difference?
Nothing beats the GM optically.
Thanks, but how is it for videos ? a lot of focus breathing ? nervous autofocus ?
It is incredibly quiet so for video it’s perfect.
@@indysbike3014 Thanks
the only lens that evens comes close for value is the nikon 200-500, this Sony lens is unrivaled for overall value, I have seen comparisons to the 600-f4 and the 2-600 really holds it own even against that 600 gmaster, especially in the center of the frame. If you shoot with one of the high megapixel cameras or even a crop body with a tight pixel pitch there is a trade off with ISO but most of issues can be overcome with some post work
Hi mate, love the video, random request, can I please have it? 😂 I’ve been wanting a telephoto for ages and can’t afford one 😂
If I hit a million subscribers today its yours! 😜
@@StefanMalloch well I pray to all the gods! 😂
🤙🏼
Would it work v well with A7s?
AF wise sure, but for birds, wildlife and sports you can never have enough reach so we rely on high MP to be able to crop and not lose detail. It all depends on your needs though.
Which would you recommend then?
So is the 200-600 in your kit?
No I'm sticking with the 100-400GM. I don't have an unlimited budget but if I did I would have both. Too Niche of a lens for what I regularly shoot.
@@StefanMalloch good to know! Thanks for the review.
I rented this lens once, pretty nice but you wouldn't use it unless you shoot birds, sports from a distance or going on safari. That's why I won't buy it, but if I go on safari again I will just rent it.
I love the lens but it’s too heavy
I have this lens for more than a year. It along with A7rIV is a horrible combination. Focus is soft and autofocus takes a lot of time. I heard it is fantastic with price lens like 400 f2.8 and 600 f4 but I don't have budget for those
G is Sony's midrange, GM is top of the line, which for an R body, the mark IV currently is.
@@agoodjoe6910 Then it must be stated clearly. One has to go for costly GM if they buy R camera. Else many like me would be stuck with bad combo
@@souvikroychoudhury8698 it doesn't need to be, you bought the top of the line professional camera for high resolution work, surely its obvious that you would also require expensive professional lenses to be a good match?
@@agoodjoe6910 No reviewer called that out in their video is the disappointment.
I am not sure if that's the way Sony would project it - Buy it only if you afford 10k lense. I will check with them on your point of view.
Of course with a weather sealed lens, it is good to use a weather sealed camera; the magnesium housing A6400. Note not all the Sony a series are weather sealed; some a6xxx housings are PLASTIC.
This ore sigma 500mm f4
A bit too late to review this len...
And yet here it is lol
save the money get a sigma
or save even more and just use your phone. Depends on what quality you're after!
Says the guy who bought the sigma.
@@tomvana4270 I bought the 200-600 and am very pleased with it. Native Sony lenses work so much better too
@@drummingspain207 I personally have a sigma contemporary myself for a few months now. Haven’t had enough time with it yet to seriously judge it yet. However the Sony has internal focusing ,better weather sealing and the focusing seems to be better. My son just bought an A7iv and after many hours of research he’s going with the Sony lens for those reasons. Yes it’s quite a bit more expensive but in the end the cost increase will probably be worth it. Have a happy new year.
@@tomvana4270 I used Canon for years. Then got an A9 and tried to adapt my 300 f2.8 which didn't work out too well. I ended up selling all my Canon gear and now only have native lenses. You're right, you pay more for them but only once! Then after a few months you forget about that and just enjoy the benefits of pairing up what was designed to be together. I've bought 3rd party lenses in the past and sure, some have worked very well (Sigma 105 macro on the Canon etc), but with Sony, I've decided to stick with their own lenses. Happy shooting!
Please stop saying that putting 600mm on a crop-sensor makes it a 900mm "equivalent" -- there is no such thing as a free lunch. Putting it on a crop sensor camera makes it a 600mm lens with a 900mm field of view. The benefit is that you put more pixels on your subject. This is a Good Thing. However: You are NOT getting 900mm worth of detail. It is *NOT* a 900mm equivalent... and people need to really stop making that kind of misleading comparison.
well , if the lens has resolution higher than what the lines of pixels on the FF sensor can capture, than using a crop camera w tighter pixels will actually pull further detail out of the image which would not be seen on the FF. ofc its not a 900mm lens, it merely provides a field of view of one.
4.68 lbs, it’s $1898, big huge lens hood, no... a “statement for sure”....? No.... massive weighs a lot, dude you exaggerate everything. Please stick to facts and real life facts. I have never seen one of your videos before… And no offense I will never watch another one because you seem to be giving an all but realistic review. Nothing more than I hate than another stupid UA-cam review. Please just be real
😂 Bahaha say what? Those are the facts. Ill keep doing me. Hope you find happiness.
