This game gets a lot of flack, but a few friends and I have a deep love for it. The composer for the music is one of my all time favorites: Hirohiko Takayama. This hack is more of a cosmetic improvement, but using those Castlevania 3 zombies IMO is the best improvement featured here.
Some cool changes, but different isn't always better. My main problem with this hack is that the weapons look objectively worse. It reminds me of the Pacnsacdave Back to the Future "enhanced" hack. Sure everything is different, but no real changes have been made to the core gameplay, and frankly many of the design changes made it look less like the film than the original game did (Marty wears a yellow shirt etc). Now a good example would be Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest Redacted by TheAlmightyGuru. I mean come on guys anyone can do a pallet swap, but to fix actual issues with the game is, and forgive the pun, the Lord's work. That's value. Basically my point is this: If you change anything it should be better than the original, or it should fit a theme. If it isn't a measured improvement on the graphics or gameplay then you need to swap the whole theme. Like was done in the "Halloween" rom hack that was made for Friday the 13'th for NES. although I'll add that in the Halloween hack it does make several changes to the gameplay, mainly the lack of the other "counselor" characters because you only play as Laurie Strode.
Not sure how something subjective can be objective 😂. But I kind of agree with your other part. Doesn't look like much was really changed at all. Granted I have no idea how exactly they could make big changes to this, but this seems like a gimmick mainly.
@@bubblegumxo Just because something is aesthetic doesn't mean it's beauty is subjective. One could make the sprites into solid rectangles on a black back ground, and it wouldn't be subjectively better. It would be obviously worse because the intent of the artist doesn't match the outcome.
@@400KrispyKremes that's true, but that's also a pretty dramatic difference that isn't the case here. I think the blood on the knife is pretty cool, and looks better than the original. The others I honestly can barely see a difference. So I believe it's more of a subjective thing, based on the eye of the beholder. Not trying to bust your balls, I just see so many people use the word "objective", when "in my opinion" would be a more appropriate thing to say.
@@andrewhunt1328 There was a mistranslation in the OG game saying to light it with the torch, but that's not how you actually light them. This romhack gave a correction on how to actually light the fireplaces.
I like the new color on the sprites and other improvements they made what i don't understand is why back then when the game was created they never used colors like that?! However if they would have never picked the purple and blue colors than never would have made such a big impact as a has in pop culture, most people would have not even remembered the game as much.
It was probably something to do with the background. If they had him colored like he usually is, he would probably be hard to make out from the actual background. I don't know why the fuck he's purple though, It really is just one of those LJN things.
This ROM hack isn't hardware-accurate. The NES had a lot of hardware limitations, including how many and which colors could be displayed (48 colors and 6 shades of gray, up to 25 of these being displayed at once), how many sprites could occupy any given scanline, and of course storage considerations; it's hard to pin down exact numbers, I've heard that storage on actual NES cartridges can vary between 1.8 to 8 mb. Regardless, by today's standards, it's pretty tiny - there are JPEG images out there today that are larger than some NES games. In addition, the NES itself only had 2 kilobytes of video RAM, augmented by up to 8 kB of tile-pattern RAM on the cartridge. These hardware limitations account for a lot of the weird color palette choices you see in NES games. LJN's notorious for picking weird color palettes, but at least some of them are explained by bumping up against hardware issues and taking the path of least resistance to resolve it.
@@RadioactiveMooMoo It doesn't appear that fire causes the most damage to Jason as the game indicates. Both fire and the pitchfork take off one tick on Jason. And, it appears the pitchfork is stronger when used on Jason outside as it goes a little faster than the fire. I think the game is wrong. I do what you did--I defeat the mother 3 times and get the pitchfork.
If you like this, you should play the fan game Friday The 13th: Return to Camp Blood. It’s an NES rom. You can see it in action on my most recent video with a link to its itch page to download.
I imagine because of speed and jumping, then maybe starting location compared to the guy with the same abilities? (If you're not familiar with the game, the guys and girls each have one slow counselor, one medium, and one fast.)
Apparently Mark and Chrissy both have the same running and jumping, but Mark rows faster, while Chrissy throws weapons faster. Most speedrunners pick Mark for maximizing every second. Since they stand right in front of him and kill him in the side scrolling parts, the throw speed probably doesn't really make a difference, and the time saved from rowing is better. But since this was just for fun, the differences between the two are probably very small.
@@bubblegumxo Only women can equip the sweater, which cuts damage in half, meaning they can have twice the HP than the male counterparts, making Chrissy better overall.
Too much humor in the dialogue between days (for a survival horror game, we get "Contrats" instead of Congratulations and "Jason is pissed!"), it's Voorhees with two O's, not one, and it's Ki Ki Ki Ki, Ma Ma Ma Ma.

Definitely a massive improvement from the original version.
Personally I'm biased in favor of purple tracksuit Jason, but this works!
@@RadioactiveMooMoo Agreed
No, definitely fuckin NOT
@@kimjongun2946 why do you say it isn't an improvement?
Wish that alarm didn’t go off every 5 seconds…
This person knows how to play this game. Defeated Jason's mother on all 3 days. Nice
They spelled Voorhees wrong! It’s like Jason Goes to Hell all over again.
Cool changes, (will miss the purple jumpsuit, though...ha ha ha)
Small issue, though, the last name is "Voorhees", not "Vorhees"
Instablaster.
Also another problem is it says switch when Nintendo didn’t make that then 😂
"And now he's pissed!!"
Did nintendo really let that go? Lol....
Just like it says..You and your friends are dead! If you lose every counselor

That's some good points. The rom hack wasn't made my LJN.
It's all opinion I personally enjoy the original game for what it is and not going nit pick over a 8 bit game
I like all the little change. Makes it better
I laughed my ass off in the

The NES was limited to the color palettes in could use to make sprites at the same time. Jason was made from leftover colors.

Conglaturation.. All you're camper are belong to us.
Nice improvement like what this could look like if it came out on Super Nintendo :)
Other than the new sprites/colors, and some different wording on the cut scenes, what is different about this version compared to the original?
It's only subtle changes not a new game
Those are apparently the only differences. Supposedly the text in the menu is different too.
Wish wayforward would remake this!
Looks way better than the original

Well....it's less glitchy than Friday the 13th on PS4....🤷♂️

So what's the point of lighting the fireplaces?
Lighting the fireplaces gets you the flashlight, which illuminates the cave. I think it lights up the woods too but I'm not 100% sure on that

Man it can't be an improvement if they took out Jason's iconic purple jump suit
Why did the original game have zombies? Don't remember those in the movies...
Because it's LJN. They are notorious for adding random shit where it doesn't belong! lol!
The zombies appearance is based on Jason's appearance in the twist ending of the very first movie. It'd be spoilers to say more than that.
It wouldn't be much of a game if Jason was the only enemy you had to fight.
According to the game lore, they're Jason's past victims
