Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich,
Herr Gott, zu unsern Zeiten;
Es ist doch ja kein andrer nicht,
Der für uns könnte streiten,
Denn du, unsr Gott, alleine.
Grant us peace graciously,
Lord God, in our time;
there is indeed no other
who could fight for us
than You, our God, alone.
Text: transl. Martin Luther (1483 - 1546)
The best.
Eight cellos! Four cellos for each of the two cello parts. What a rich orchestral sound! The singing is absolutely beautiful.
Danke für diese zauberhafte Aufführung, verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich. Give peace a chance.
Freundliche Gedanken, thank you, merci, obrigada
my favorite choral piece of all time
Danke für die wunderbare Musik!
A beautiful and moving performance of a timeless classic. Thank you.
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful! Reminds me of my late father, one of his favorites. Thank you NU for doing this so well😢😢
Soooo schön ❤
Dear colleague, I'm the director of the Handel and Haydn Society in Madrid, Spain. I've conducted myself and heard many interpretations of this pice, including quite a few by professional ensambles and I must say that this is one of the most moving and deeply expressive ones I've heard, and it is so inspiring that it is performed by an univerity group. So I'd like to express my humblest, sincerest and warmest congratulations to you and your groups. All the best, R. Banerjee
The clarinet's Concert F at 4:27 is magical for fusing the way it does to the leading tone in the strings. At first, I thought he played a wrong note. I thought he played the D. I've never heard it that way before. The orchestration is miraculous in this piece.
Nonet: Yes. The cellos have the leading tone there and, since it's in the lower register, it makes the clarinet's note sound like a harmonic of the bass note, so this tricks us into hearing the natural octave harmonic of the cellos as a clarinet note. The timbre of that harmonic is probably more similar to that of a clarinet than that of a string instrument. Fascinating!
June: It gets even deeper: The 19th harmonic is indeed a "minor 3rd" separated from the fundamental by 4 octaves, so there is a further connection between the clarinet's note and that cello harmonic. It's like "Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven",
Beautiful rendition of a deeply moving piece. Remarkably well done!
