    i kinda halfassed it but it worked. I got a 6 string bass, Tuned it to C# F C f A# d#. I think i was running a 125 light 5 string set plus a high something, and i just ignored the low C# and played it in basically drop f, and then moved down to the C# string when they did the pitch shift. i just ran my bass rig but with a mod tone distortion pedal to make it sound more like a distorted baritone. sounded monstrous, wouldnt recomend it for your main intrument, kinda sucks to play anything but Northlane, but hey, if you got a spare bass...it worked.

    • @GaryHiebner

      Studio monitors are great if they fit in your budget. The bigger the studio monitor the better low end clarity you will have on the guitars tones. Or if not in your budget right now just use what you got and enjoy it :)

    • @GaryHiebner
      @GaryHiebner  3 роки тому +2

      How low do you want to go? And do you need all 7 strings or do you just want to go low? The problem I find with most 7 strings is that the majority of them only have a 25.5 inch scale length and this limits how low you can go. I find for me Drop A is like the limit on a 7 strings with a 25,5 inch scale. But if you get a 7 string with a longer scale you can go lower. The guys in Northlane are using 27 inch 7 strings and are tuning down to Drop F. If you just want to go low and don't need all 7 strings then take a look at some 6 string baritone guitars.

    Would a 26.5 inch 7 string work?

    • @GaryHiebner
      @GaryHiebner  3 роки тому

      26,5 might be a bit short. Like you might be able to tune down to F, but it might not intonate correctly higher up the neck. But give it a bash. Try an 0.80 on the 7th string and see if it can intonate up to the 12th fret. If not maybe try a 0.85 on the 7th string. But the thicker you go on the strings the darker and less bright they sound.

    What would you suggest in regards to EQing the guitars?

    • @GaryHiebner
      @GaryHiebner  4 роки тому +1

      I find the best solution is to shelf off a bit of the highs as this smooths off the sound. A low cut up to around 150hz helps get rid of any low rumble that may be taking up some headroom. And then I normally do some cuts on problematic resonant frequency areas. This changes depending on the guitar I’m using and the amp sim plugin.

    Awesome
    but I don't have enough money to buy 7 strings, i only have an old equipment esp ltd v 401 guitar & digital effects pod x3 live. tuning in the band I used Drop B with the Numetal genre, but I never got a drop B sound with a heavy but clear tone quality. it feels sad to be a musician in an underdeveloped country, buying good musical equipment here requires very long savings & the wages of working an office are only enough for a day

    • @GaryHiebner
      @GaryHiebner  3 роки тому +1

      If you got only a 6 string Standard scale you can put some heavy gauges on like 16-80. That will get you down to Drop F. But you might have intonation issues going up higher on the neck, and because of the thicker strings your tone will be a bit darker. Thats where baritones really come in handy. Better intonation and clarity for low tunings. In South Africa here it's also a bit hard getting gear. But I watch the used market alot. All my baritones I picked up used for really good prices. So maybe see what guitars are going on the used market. You never know maybe someone is selling their 7-string or baritone they not using :)

      That sounds good. Actives are good for low tunings and hi gain. Its a bit of a preference thing. Some guys live actives while others don't like them. Moral of the story if you like them then thats good. Get your gear to work for you that you currently have. Tweak and tweak until you get the tone you after. Standard scales are fine for Drop B. And that stting gauges set seems good. So now focus on getting the tone you want out of your Pod. Its actually amazing what you can do with a limited amount of gear. Their tone is not so complicated. You can use very cheap gear to achieve that cardboard crappy guitar sound: any harley benton 8string or baritone with stock pickups and some iphone guitar app like Mooer GeLabs or Deplike. The fact they are using expensive custom shop guitars and amps/pluging is just a showoff.

      I heard Northlane is actually switching to hello kitty squiers and garage band because it apparently sounds just as good!
      You're a joke.
