    Sweetwater‘s Nick D‘Virgilio takes a deep dive into a relative newcomer: Welch Tuning Systems. Founded by Samuel Welch in 2015, each WTS drum features a single master tuning key that adjusts all the lugs, the batter head, and the resonate head simultaneously. This system not only reduces weight and opens up shell resonance, but also makes drastic and rapid tuning swaps a breeze, even on the fly! You can jump all the way from bright and snappy to dark, muted depths in a matter of seconds. Check it out!

    I was at namm the year they debuted and I really hoped they’d see success. Of all the universal tuning systems that have since come out, wts is still my favorite. It’s a trip go experience it in person. If you have the means, I urge you to purchase one and support this wonderful company.

    Interesting concept. You would think this system would pull down more on the side that the twist tuner is on. To tune all points of the drum equally is brilliant.

      The pulleys minimize stiction to help balance tension around the entirety of the drum. We generally recommend giving cable on the opposing side of the drum a couple of pinches on either side of one of the pulleys to help ensure that the tension is even.

    That's a modern on a very old-school tuning system... old military drums, and way before that, the African djembe both use this same concept! Very nice. As always, the main issue for a snare drum, is that you almost always the snare side tighter than the top...

    • @WelchTuningSystemsInc
      @WelchTuningSystemsInc Рік тому +2

      Exactly! Of course, with the snare drum, snare side heads are typical far thinner and will automatically be tuned higher than the batter head when under equal tension.

    I like that there's less hardware on the shell. I'm sure a brass or bronze version would sound good. More resonance out of the shell with less metal parts bolted on to it. I like the equal tension on top and bottom too. Big fan of single tension drums. This thing is great!

    • @WelchTuningSystemsInc
      @WelchTuningSystemsInc Рік тому

      This is totally understandable. It's quite reasonable that some drummers wouldn't consider changing tunings often if the process isn't very practical. As soon as the concept becomes a reality, the creative opportunities become more apparent.

    Kiss of death when Nick had to put glasses on to change heads lol It should not be this difficult. I saw Cole Paramore and Rick Dior do drum head reviews on YT. They did it on a dialtune snare. You can tune the drum up or down a lot easier with the big ergonomic dial than this tiny key on the Welch. I reckon maybe 10-15 head changes in under 10 minutes. Some people said the Welch Tuning system was better in those video's. So I had to check it out on YT. Which bought up Sweetwater. But after watching Nick waste a good half hr trying to change heads (Speeded up of course). I'm thinking Bill Belichck, Whose your starting QB this week ? Yeah..... next ? 😀

      I posted with a link to the Dialtune snare; it seems to have gone missing. Not sure why; I'm fairly certain this product doesn't compete directly with a thousand dollar snare that has separate knobs for tuning the batter and snare side heads AND has quick-release rims, allowing both offset tunings AND blazing fast head changes.

      Hardly! We had the pleasure of getting to spend some serious time with the WTS Artistry and Epiphany drums, trying different tunings and replacing heads. The drumhead replacement process is an absolute breeze and only gets easier as you do it more (gotta get used to a new approach, after all). We got to the point where we could swap heads and tune up a drum in a fraction of the time with WTS vs. a traditional drum and the use of a drill.

    But you lose 80% of a drums dynamic range with even-tension systems…
    It’s great for simplicity, but it’s no replacement for dual-tension.

    • @heidiheidiho6412
      @heidiheidiho6412 Рік тому +2

      I think this system is great for snares but not that much for toms since you lose the option of getting different tones. That being said, other instruments do not have to deal with two tunable elements , so this system essentially simplifies things. Also, you have to remember those old rope tensioned snare drums were tuned the same way i.e. the top and bottom head at the same time so you can argue this system replicates that one.
      In fact now that I think about it, other than bata and taiko drums, tom-toms are the only drums that have two heads. And with the bata drum, both heads are played, while with the taiko, the other head works only as a fixed resonating element, so tom-toms are an anomaly. Sorry, I'm rambling at this point! Have a nice day! 😄

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum Рік тому +9

      Hmmm, 80% loss of dynamic range? That certainly wasn't our experience with these drums. We'd be super curious to know what your source is for that stat. We've spent quite a bit of time with three different WTS kits and, in fact, they all seemed to have a wider dynamic range than most drums, which we attributed to the minimal hardware piercing the shell. Never once as we were experimenting with different tunings did we lament the inability to tune the batter independently from the reso. The quality of tone left little to nothing more to be desired.

      Respectfully, as a person with a wife, small kids, and very little time on my hands to replace and tune drums, I am simply unable to spend the time tuning drums like I did before I had to worry about irritating the crap out of everyone around me. This is absolutely a solution to a problem I had. I get that some people can quickly tune a standard drum, but I’ve never been one of those people. But I got a WTS snare and had it tuned up about 10 seconds after unboxing it and it has been in tune since.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum Рік тому +6

      Ah, but there's a difference between a problem that you can't relate to and one that nobody has. If this allows drummers to have another means of creating a more musical performance by adapting the tuning to the context, especially in a shorter span of time, we're all for it!

    • @ldcsam1
      @ldcsam1 Рік тому +4

      Shawn, this is the solution to the problem every drummer has had. That problem is the time consumption consumed to get the perfect sound from any and every drum. With WTS, as seen in the video, you can get many perfect sounds in just mere seconds. Thank You WTS, Nick, and Sweetwater.
