So, i don't know banjos at all, this is all just conjecture, but I could understand if an instrument would go out of tune going from hot to cold, but if you give it time to "settle" to the new temperature, and then tune it, wouldn't it be fine?
Just because there's snow doesn't mean it's that cold out. There was a big storm in my area a few weeks ago, tons of snow on the ground still, yet it hit 70° this week. It doesn't all melt, just gets really icy.

It's funny how it all comes full circle. About 100 to 150 years ago, Scottish and Irish immigrants laid the foundation for American bluegrass. A few generations later, the tunes they wrote are now being played by people from their home countries.
