Great vid! I highly recommend reenactors to utilize both enternal suspenders and y straps. It allows for a easier way of putting on your gear and stability

Just stumbled on this video, and I will say it's an excellent tutorial on the subject - most people know the Y-straps can be adjusted but the trick is knowing "to what point". Adjusting it to match regulation or the "standard/proper" way is one reason, certainly, but as you pointed out a key reason is a practical one - if you've had to hump a few miles with a fully-loaded Sturmgepäck or A-frame you'll learn why pretty darn quick.
Ultimately though, as with all combat gear in any era and any army, there's "regulation", which most everyone starts out with from the barracks - and then there's "whatever" once you've been in continuous combat operations for weeks on end. 😆

very cool. I would like to mention: for the smaller great war community, if you're looking for y-straps for ww1, sorry. They don't exist. However it was common to use a breadbag strap around the neck, mounting on the d-rings on the ammo pouches.

I wouldn’t say leather y straps are late war. I mean I may be wrong but I always thought the canvas y straps were a late war thing, obviously due to the leather shortage. Correct with if I’m wrong. And also great video love your content.

Not 100% certain here, but I had thought the canvas ones were Afrikakorps?

@@Aiddan3 they were, but commonly used in the West later on in the likes of Normandie 👍🏻

The Canvas Straps were always around, they were initially used for training battalions but later on they were sent to Italy, Afrika the Balkans and just about everywhere else.

There is a certain type of german Y suspenders made out of a blue fabric, not leather that I think are called THW suspenders. But the thing is, the back vertical strap is very short making it placed way above the waist, literally on the back! How did german infantry men actually wore those series straps? Were they allot shorter people then?

I do have to give the Germans credit for coming up with such a nice rig, especially when you realize that they adopted it since WW1. It’s very sturdy, it goes well with the human posture and it just looks fantastic. Too bad they don’t make normal suspenders with a steel ring on the back like that.

Excuse me, can you type in the description the German name of the Y-Straps load carrying equipment? It would be a lot helpful for the people not well versed in German parliance.

I don’t really get this video. There’s pictures and video of y straps in all sorts of positions. It just depends on the individual if it’s comfortable or not.
God forbid you look at Vietnam war GIs. They have their suspenders and belts adjusted in all sorts of bizarre ways. People in real life aren’t hyper fixated on the exact placement of them
