This is so well done. Over the years, I was able to know Franz Joseph (Schnaubelt), Doug Drexler, Andrew Probert, and John Eaves (and met Gene Roddenberry). I made the desk models of the NOMAD satellite for both ST: Enterprise (Dead Stop), and Picard 2 (Ep6). A visit to Paramount during the early days of TNG was lots of fun. Nice to see an academic review of SNW's design (since I'm also a designer). Thanks for all your hard work! P.S. it was a visit by Matt Jefferies to the NYWF in 1964-65 that influenced him the most to use mid century design for the show.
Thanks for the reply, I can see how the worlds fair would play such a big role in influencing Jeffries. The optimistic neofuturist design sentiments resonated well I think with Roddenberry’s positive vision of a future utopia.
The door's design also seems to also indicate in which direction artificial is gravity is pointing so crew can prepare themselves should that system get compromised and needing re-initializing.
@@sw-gs And, y'know, not use slick floors which look like they'd have terrible traction if you need to run down them. Unless it's some kind of future floor that looks slick but it actually grippy. I checked, and most ST shows have had carpets. Discovery, SNW, Prodigy, and the Abramsverse Enterprise haven't.
@@EGRJ Traction depends not just on the materials used in the floors but also used the materials used in the soles of the shoes people wear. With rubber soles you‘ll have good traction on any kind of floor. I think the more important factor is: on a starship you want floors that easy to clean and don‘t absorb smells. Just imagine several hundred people dropping sweat onto carpets while doing the daily runs they need to stay in shaped on carpeted corridors…
It is insanely cool to listen to you talk about the design of the ship and actually trying to make it work and then ON TOP OF THAT, you're so much of an architecture nerd that you modeled it. Dude, you are incredibly talented.
An unnecessary amount of work ... Sounds like an architect's life to me 😄 Beautiful models, well-researched opinions and an educational piece to boot. Great job Mr Morphologis. I was unaware of the architectural influences on Star Trek and I feel like I've gained a greater appreciation for the profession So when's your collab with Paramount for the next Star Trek series?😁
When I saw the floor lamps in Pike's quarters (especially next to the bed), I immediately recognized them as classic Danish Modern. They were designed by Poul Henningsen. His first designs for this lamp were made in 1927!
When I was a child in the 70s, I was in awe of the design of the USS Enterprise. This new design makes me feel the same only more grown up. “5 Forward” is beautiful and feels like a Michelin stared restaurant serving nouvelle cuisine. The warm tones contrast with the cold of space presented through the floor to ceiling windows. Pike’s quarters seem vast compared to older Trek quarters and the addition of a kitchenette and a Malm design fireplace adds to the feeling of home and not just billeting. My two cents worth. Loved the video as always, off the fly my 400i around the Verse.
Love what you did with this one - your passion shone through, and it was really interesting to hear your thoughts and the historical context, and then the clever measurement work/mathematical side. Also 5 forward, amazing!
Aspiring games designer here. I tried to do something similar for a college project earlier this year, and I'd love to know the processes and techniques that you used in order to model and texture these areas. They look out of this world (lol) and I'd love to one day be able to pull something like this off one day.
YES!!! More Architect reviews!!!! While the summer's been slower than usual, I'm sure there's dozens of unreviewed SC vehicles we would enjoy a review on :)
Sure there are other ships he could review in other games and media as well. Could possibly do something for Space Engineers and/or other such games as well.
As a fan of Star Trek for just over 36 years now, and being a huge fan of the original NCC-1701 and NCC-1701-D, THIS has been by far, my absolute version of the Enterprise. Strange New Worlds, and its production designers knocked it out of the park inside and out! And she even looked great animated! My first good look at the SNW Enterprise, and my heart skipped beats, it is THE perfect balance of 1960's aesthetic, with modern upgrades to, everything. And this video has been awesome :)
I'm so impressed. It's a shame you're not down to do a little more of this any time soon, as I'm infatuated with the design of this ship, now, as you clearly are as well. Hopefully this video takes off!
Having played around with building voyager in Maya I am thoroughly flabbergasted at how professional these renderings are. Holy Q! 😂 first time seeing a vid of yours - instant subscribe from me!
This is why you’re one of my favorite channels I’ve found in the last couple years. Really phenomenal work. If you ever feel motivated to do An Architect Reviews episode on the TNG Enterprise, that would be fantastic
I too would love to see a breakdown of the Galaxy Class Enterprise. People poke fun of the "Marriott Hotel in Space" look, but I always thought it was such a great blend of futuristic and comfortable. Considering in the show it was supposed to be the most advanced ship in the fleet, and was designed to operate on its own for long periods of time, the design fit perfectly. I know if I had to serve on one of these things for months, or even years, at a time; I would want to live on something as comfortable as the Enterprise-D.
3:26 Awesome calling out design artist Matt Jefferies here, who was immortalized in the name of the iconic access tubes that are so essential in any episode with mechanical problems or invaders on the ship.
This is incredible, you’ve outdone yourself! If only they had worked within the confines of the outer hull to create the interior… of course I’ll allow it due to its stunning beauty. I’d lie about my genetic enhancements too in order to serve on that vessel.
I hate to say it but you one upped yourself on this one ,I am turning 59 in october so needless to say I am a huge nerd from the 60's to today and watched every original Star Trek episode somewhere in the 50 to 100 times each, that includes all the other spinoff's of coarse, next gen was dear to my heart but this looks amazing and will watch all of these episodes in all their glory, having said that, this is so cool and you really went above and beyond where no other content creator I have ever seen has ever gone before, If you could see me, I am standing and applauding you good sir.thank you for this you have made my month.Don't let the work get you down, from my experience, you will remember the most difficult projects that you toil over and give the most, this effort both physical and mental, usually yields the most rewarding and impressive results. Great job!
Having built a recreation of a TV show set myself in Unreal Engine, I can really appreciate the tremendous amount of work that must have gone into replicating these interiors! Your attention to detail is incredible!
The one thing about reflective surfaces is that it can make things look a bit abstract and confusing on black surfaces. The bridge has black shiny floors and areas around the bridge. With all the lights big or small, the reflections make it difficult to process what is there and what is simply reflected light. Sometimes a flat surface helps to define the actual shape of things and keeps the reflection down to a minimum.
I absolutely love you reviews, I've been following you since I saw one of your Stat Citizen ones. And now Star Trek, my favourite thing ever! Today is a phenomenal day!
I'd love to hear you fawn about the rebuilding of the D bridge for Picard, and the overall design from an architects perspective. One of the greatest moments in trek history and it was a true labor of love.
The Strange New Worlds Enterprise comes off as a beautiful ship, however I can't help but think that those shiny floors would be incredibly slippery day-today, and potentially hazardous in an emergency situation when everyone is running around.
This is just stunning work you have done. Thanks! One note - Star Trek was first broadcast on NBC from 1966-1969. It's first brush with fandom success *was* in rerun/syndication in the 1970s,
Wow! Excellent work! I'm 52 and a Star Trek Fan. Now, having said that, the sets of the Enterprise 1701 in the original series were, well, a product of their time. They had no idea Star Trek would become what it has nearly 60 years later; a vast franchise of 13 movies and 11 TV series to date. I know it will be impossible to make a prequel show looking like the 60's original, especially in the 21st century and I'm ok with that. This is a franchise we all love and respect, and perhaps are even jealous about. But in our current times the Enterprise as depicted in SNW is simply gorgeous and welcomed! TOS will always be there as the one that started it, ship design, sets and all. I think we all understand that modernization was inevitable. I'm just glad the name Enterprise was kept through it all and that the original show hasn't been tossed aside for being old.
Wow, that was a fantastic tour! I also noticed on the bridge and in the lounge they have the same style of chairs used in TOS. It's incredible that they still fit in with all the design changes.
Great video. Fantastic work on the models you made. I'm a big fan of the architecture of sci-fi ships, especially ones that veer into art-deco territory. The SNW Enterprise has been a treat to see more and more off as the show continues.
I folowed you for Starcitizen so long ago - I followed you for your deep takes despite losing interest in the project. I love this. I would watch so much of this. You make great stuff. Keep on.
Something that I love about this design originating in Disco was the stark differences it shows between a prototype pure science vessel that could one day become something more friendly/livable, as proven by the changes in later seasons, if it had passed into proper service like the NX did and the Flagship that even the Disco crew viewed as the ideal of the Federation/Starfleet.
I think this is the most gorgeous version of the Enterprise. It mashes a perfect blend of retro and futuristic space age design. The wrap over windows that double as a skylight are a particular highlight for me. Just absolutely gorgeous design. The attention to detail with the lighting is also a highlight for me. They don't just light the spaces for aesthetics, they are lit in a way that has functionality in case of an emergency and what not. I absolutely love it. My dream would be to play a Trek game with a fully explorable Enterprise to command and live in. This ship does not have my favorite exterior in terms of all the Enterprise designs over the years, but the interior is pure art and at least in my opinion, the best design yet. It's definitely a place I would love to live if I had to spend months or years aboard a starship in the darkness of space.
I do need to agree with you. It's refreshing to see a modern interpretation of the Enterprise. It may bend the rules and scaling here and there, but that's a hill I can die on. It's somewhat refreshing too that we can see a ship that feels at home, and we are talking about a ship that will endure a five-year exploratory mission. Accommodation is important. And it's just a bit sad knowing the New Trek haters simply pointing out whatever thing wrong with the new show, and quickly dogpiling everyone who shows a little bit of respect to the New Trek. It's as if liking the classic and modern Trek is forbidden for some unknown reason. But maybe it's just them trying to show their superiority complex because they don't have shit in real life.
@@KentLavisMW Or maybe if all you can do is insult the "haters" then you don't really believe in your own hollow arguments and justifications. KurtzmanTrek is not Star Trek. If it were its own thing, that'd be whatever. But it tries to leech off of something greater, and keeps shallow people like you attached with meaningless platitudes because in truth it's your life that is empty and desperate for validation.
14:55 It might still work, if the Lounge takes up two decks. An upper corridor wouldn't be able to make a full circle without terminating on or navigating around the space allocated for 5-Forward, but it means there could be another corridor ring that's closer to the perimeter to account for the smaller radial dimension of the officer quarters. For the lower deck ring that leads to the Lounge, crew quarters could utilize spokes to access them, doubling up to make efficient use of the space determined by the Lounge's dimensions. Only half of the quarters would have a window view and be rather small, but that fits perfectly with regular crew quarters, as opposed to officers.
I've always enjoyed your 'architect reviews' videos. They're always top notch. This one takes it to a new level - you put in a ton of work, and it shows! Amazing as always. The good folks at Paramount should chasing after you with job offers😃
This was a good change of pace. Hopefully we can get one of these videos with good use of your own modeling skills every once in a while, even though they're way too much work for every video. It adds value that seems hard to find elsewhere on youtube. As someone who heavily employs 3D CAD in my own profession, I definitely understand how much work goes into it.
Phenomenal design elements. When I spoke with some folks who worked on tng/voy one of the many discussions were are we going to see an updated Tos bridge ever. I myself did some pieces in Blender but this is just truly breath taking. It would be great to work on a project of this scale.
Professional Engineer and former Navy sailor here. A few thoughts. 1) Just call it forward crew lounge. That would indicate an aft crew lounge exists as well. We didn't need to name a space beyond it's function in the Navy. If you must name it then it could be named by it's frame number. Ships frames are the ribs that attach to the keel of the ship. The nautical convention, as I recall, is Deck number-Frame number to identify where you are. Since the frames in the saucer would be in degrees of a circle maybe call it 5-0 lounge. 2) I like the idea of angling the outer wall in the corridors of the saucer section so that anywhere in the interior corridor you know which way is to the outside edge of the saucer, similar to the other comment about the door detail that shows which way is down. 3) The frame in the corner of the corridor should be wider where the beam meets the column. 4) Fire is the worst thing on a ship since it can spread so rapidly so Pike having a fireplace is ridiculous. And before you go but Inde this is a starship remember that fire was still an issue in TNG and Voyager. 5) the quarters are too large. They could be about twice the size of Kirk's quarters. The crew is about half that of Kirk's. But they shouldn't be four times the size.
I always loved the original Constitution Class design from the original show. when they showed off the new design for The Motion Picture my eyes fell out of my head! the TNG came around with the 1701-D. Then this design came up, and I really like what they did with it. I just wish that Jefferies had this fleshed out design back in the 60's!
Wow! That's a very detailed and great work. And I love the Strange New Worlds interiors as well. The ship really looks like a real place to work and live in
Interesting how the lounge moves around the ship. SNW has it forward, TOS has it buried in the saucer without any windows, and TMP has it port-side aft next to the impulse deck
Great video. I love the reimagining of the Enterprise. I tend to see such changes as "this is what it looked like the whole time". One small exception, the officer's quarters are way too big for this being the TOS ship. :) But I'll overlook that also because the dinner parties in Pike's quarters/bachelor pad are a highlight of the show. Looking at the review of "5 forward" made me think how someday we might see at least a slight reimagining/update of the TNG ship to keep up with this visual continuity.
Thank you for doing this. I love the new interpretation of the good ol' NCC 1701 - nothing. It's the first ship I would like to live on after, you know, 'the fat one'.
It's a perfect merge, based on Connie's hull, and trying to incorporated styles on Galaxy as much as possible in interior, while integrading elements on Refit Connie as much as possible in exterior. The only problem is it was setting BEFORE not AFTER the TOS. If it is AFTER the TOS it will be so goddamn great in anyway.
Dang! Man! Above and Beyond! I'm a 3D Artist and I understand how much work went into this! NICE JOB! This is spectacular! Definitely don't expect it every time, but what a good one to do it on! Thanks So Much for doing this and just wow! Excellent Presentation!
There's quite a bit of high-end Toronto restaurant style in the forward lounge and high-end furniture you'd see on say King Street in the over-priced shops. They shoot in Toronto so it makes sense that the set designers would source items from the Toronto area. I love these sets. Such an improvement from DISCO and PICARD (there-is-one-hall Picard). Thanks for a great video and all your work here.
Instead of 5 Forward, try The Happy Bottom Riding Club. It was a dude ranch, restaurant, and hotel operated by aviator Florence "Pancho" Barnes near Edwards Air Force Base in the Antelope Valley of California's Mojave Desert. It was where all of the aviators who were pushing the limits, breaking the sound barrier, and where many of the first astronauts ate and drank. Very history centric and gives a real exploration vibe. The only addition I'd put is names on a wall of those on the enterprise who had fallen similar to the pictures put up at the riding club.
thanks so much for this! truly, you did go overboard, but i really enjoyed it anyway. 🤣 this show is so enjoyable because of compelling characters and plot lines, but you point out something that had not occurred to me...this show is just damn good to look at!
Morph, my man… you make great inspirational content, your IRL work must be absolutely amazing because if this what you do in your free time… dayum bro 😎 But this video is informative, interesting, and deeply appreciated. It would make a Vulcan person become overwhelmed with emotions
Oh wow, your models are amazing! I drew a Strange New Worlds story in Star Trek issue #500 a few months ago and some of it takes place in the Port Galley (which I believe is the official name, though 5 Forward is a nice nod). I wish I’d seen this video before I drew it, your scenes would’ve been very helpful. I ended up just pausing episodes on certain scenes and trying to recreate them on paper, lol! Great video!
Firstly, I want to say I'm totally jealous of your modeling skills. But to the point; I love that the SNW's Enterprise is dripping in modernized 60's design, and that it has so many nods to the original. From obvious stuff like the chairs, the Captain's seat, and the terminals, but also the little things like Uhura's green earrings. Realistically I think it's completely over the top, but it's exactly what I want to see in a Star Trek series. They really knocked Strange New Worlds out of the ballpark, and managed to get that lightning-in-a-bottle combination of elements that producers always try to shoot for but rarely achieve.
Wow...don't jealous okay? Ask him if you can be his teammate to design more ships together. Don't be shy, maybe you will more excellent than him someday.
The redesigned Starship Enterprise based off the TOS original, It is wonderfully beautifully done. I couldn't imagine a better design that incorporates the classic and the new.
Minor credit you missed, the corridor design dates back to the movie and was continually redressed for TNG. One detail never cannonized, (unless Lower Decks did it,) is there are supposed to be equipment lockers behind the wall panels. Aside from plasma relays, isolinear conduit, and of course murder rocks, there was supposed to be more mundane equipment like fire fighting gear, emergency rations, even a spacesuit. I think there was even a sketch of a fold out bunk/rescue shelter. Somewhere a crewman could jump into when the Klingon disruptor depressurizes deck 7, or where refugee sleep when you just rescued 300 colonists from an exploding supernova.

Furturists are brings fantastic opinions on starship design, whether an academic version or alternative timeline types…can't wait to see more ships.
Wonderful comment. It must have been so inspiring to meet those legends.
Walt Disney took inspiration from the World Fair, too, building EPCOT.
The door's design also seems to also indicate in which direction artificial is gravity is pointing so crew can prepare themselves should that system get compromised and needing re-initializing.
I would also add some railing on the side of walls.

Your designs are PEREFCT as is the spot on name; 5 Forward. Thanks for all your hard work. Us nerds appreciate it greatly!
I've always enjoyed your 'architect reviews' videos. They're always top notch. This one takes it to a new level - you put in a ton of work, and it shows! Amazing as always. The good folks at Paramount should chasing after you with job offers😃
Great vid! Hope to see more reviews from you on ships from Star Trek, and on ships from other sci-fi franchises too! ❤🚀
nice work, loved seeing the old, the new and your models.
This was legit! You killed it!
Love hearing him nerding out! Respect!
I love the updated look of the Enterprise. It's now my favourite ship from the Trek universe.
The love was there and it shows! Great work!
Was always itching to see you tackle starfleet’s designs!
This is superb! Thanks for putting it together.
Absolutely love these review videos man. Subscribed 4 ever! Keep them coming! Thank you so much
This is an impressive amount of effort, great job! And thanks for sharing!
Oh dang a new review! Keep up the awesome work!
I'm quite impressed. You did justice to my favorite sci-fi ship.
Wonderful work and wonderful animations. Great background information as well, thank you for the video.
Amazing video! I didn't want it to end!
A wonderful video on what's turning out to be my new favorite Trek ship. Thank you.
Phenomenal design elements. When I spoke with some folks who worked on tng/voy one of the many discussions were are we going to see an updated Tos bridge ever. I myself did some pieces in Blender but this is just truly breath taking. It would be great to work on a project of this scale.
Good bloody grief! Absolutely stunning work!
Absolute 15/10 video. Will probably use your concepts for the sides and rear of the forward lounge for the SE and MC builds of it!
Those models you made were unreal ... yes .... Unreal. Nice.
This was amazing! Thank you for doing this!😊
damn, those models and animations are amazing. I like the new Enterprise and this time I also learned a little more about architecture. Great video.
The ship really looks like a real place to work and live in
Very cool that you took the time to craft all those 3D models to put some visual representation to what you're saying... awesome!
I love the pike Enterprise it looks spectacular . Very great work you did great video.
Stunning video. I look forward to seeing you continue to expand beyond the confines of the Star Citizen universe.
Could be called “Take 5”? LOVE this video by the way. Would be VERY excited to see more videos like this about other space shows and environs.😊
This is the most beautiful looking series ever made
Love your video and the affort you put into it!
Love the new Enterprise even more after your video 😊
Love your work & love the new Enterprise it's my favorite of all of them
Great video with an amazing model! Loved it :)
🤣 this show is so enjoyable because of compelling characters and plot lines, but you point out something that had not occurred to me...this show is just damn good to look at!
great job! I love the new show and the redesign of the enterprise. I'd love to hear your comments on the exterior too.
Morph, my man…
you make great inspirational content, your IRL work must be absolutely amazing because if this what you do in your free time… dayum bro 😎
But this video is informative, interesting, and deeply appreciated.
With subtle changes, they've morphed the original Enterprise (which is dear to my heart) into a sexy vessel❤
one of te best Star Trek shows ever made. I love the whole crew.
Well, that was amazing, talk about going above & beyond, damn informative too, thank you.
Great job with the modeling!
The redesigned Starship Enterprise based off the TOS original, It is wonderfully beautifully done. I couldn't imagine a better design that incorporates the classic and the new.
absolutely gorgeous work!
