Hi Peter, Was on a visit to County Clare in the west of Ireland some years after Dusty sadly passed. My cousin told me that her ashes were scattered in a beautiful cove on this Atlantic coast. She showed me a Dolphin who appeared soon thereafter and returns every year. The locals called the Dolphin 'Dusty'. Can you confirm this...or is it just an Irish yarn?

Dusty was a huge recording artist in the 1960s. She is from England. She has so much soul in her voice, and this song is almost like a 60s Motown Song, because of the way it sounds. Dusty was not a "One Hit Wonder," by any means. She won a few Grammy Awards, and is still today, considered one of the greatest "female" vocalists ever. Another great artist from England. The Motown reference just doesn't work. This was from an album called Dusty in Memphis. In my mind, Motown is fluff, Stax and other Southern stuff, real, grit, soul.,
My mom was a huge fan of hers. Right after she passed, my mom, I was at the grocery store and You Dont Have To Say You Love Me came on over the speaker and I was crying like a little baby while trying to pick out fruit. RIP mom.

England's home grown talent. A legend here in the UK, but one who didn't move to the US (like others did) when she cracked it, instead just worked there and in London but lived in the countryside in England. Another English artist who cracked the US big time in the 60s but was a lovely humble person in real-life. RIP Dusty, singing with the angles now, gone too soon.
"I Only Want to Be With You" is such an infectious, joyful song. If you want to feel good and hear the power of Dusty's voice, try that one. Back in the day we were shocked to find out she was British!

This lady is so important in British black culture. In the 60's she fought like a tigress to get black artists on music shows and really woke up young people with the Motown sound. It took off huge in the UK and Motown is probably the most famous record label here still. This saved so many Black Artists as their careers died in the USA. Sadly she struggled with anxiety and disappeared until the Pet Shop Boys kicked her back into the charts with their duet, her songs on the Scandal soundtrack and a new solo album

The entire DUSTY IN MEMPHIS is a fabulous album. She's a British singer who traveled to Memphis, TN and worked with the best session musicians in the city in an attempt to tap into the southern soul sound...and she nailed it! There are so many great Dusty songs. Incidentally, Aretha Franklin did a cover of SON OF A PREACHER MAN that Dusty said was better than her own.
This song was first offered to Aretha in 1967, but her father was a Baptist preacher, and she felt that a song about a girl messing around with a preacher’s son was too dirty. Aretha’s manager knew Dusty’s manager, and he thought Dusty had the perfect soulful voice for this song. Dusty had a massive hit with it, and Aretha realized she had made a big mistake when she heard how great the song was performed by someone as great as Dusty, so she then recorded her own version of it. Aretha’s version was also a hit, although not as big of a hit as Dusty’s was (probably because the public already associated it with Dusty). Aretha’s version is a little different, and she sings the lyrics with a different rhythm in her voice. When Dusty heard Aretha’s version she wished she had sung it like Aretha did, so from then on she did it Aretha’s way when she performed it.
Pure Memphis soul music sung by a British pop star... originally intended for Aretha Franklin who passed it up at first (too blasphemous) but later did her own version of it... this song is near perfect, a real iconic 60's tune. Memphis produced such great music back then.
Dusty Springfield is one of the great voices from the 60s and has long been a favorite of mine. Her song "Wishin' and Hopin" from 1964 was banned in my house because of the line "just do it and you will be his" LOL. Young, sheltered and naive, I didn't know for several years more why my Mother took exception to that! If Mom had only known, it was Dusty's soaring voice that enthralled me. Great reaction as usual. I'd like to suggest Brandi Carlisle's "The Joke" live at the 61st Grammy's for a future Female Friday.
P.S. Dusty is from London and was a star there on TV and music. She was encouraged to come to America (Memphis) to cut this album. It was a huge success; the entire album is great.
Actually it was not well received when it came out. Maybe it was not what her fans were used to. Of course, later it was recognised for the masterpiece it was.
@@lindapetro5594 I did too. But then I've always liked when artists evolve whereas some people just prefer to hear more of what they already like and this was quite a departure from her belting hits. And it didn't hurt that this was my kind of music anyway.
Great choice for FF! Dusty has one of the smoothest and unique voices ever! Spooky is another great song from her. I love watching you guys. In my opinion, the best couple on YT!
Check out: "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", "The Look of Love", "Wishin' and Hopin", "I Only Want to Be With You", and "If You Go Away". So many awesome Dusty songs!
Dusty is one of the UK’s finest singers of all time! She and Amy are at the top of the tree. She was plagued by insecurity. The musicians on this album were all the top soul musicians of the time abs had played with all of the greats. She didn’t believe that they thought she was worthy of their talent, until when they wrapped the album, they all stood and gave her a massive round of applause.
Wow what timing. I heard this song last night. The son of the Pastor of the church where we go to got married by his dad. As the groom was walking to the front of the venue, this song was playing
Hugely talented singer from a talented family. My favorite Dusty song is "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" He brother Tom was a gifted writer and producer. He wrote several hit songs for THE SEEKERS, among others. "Georgy Girl", "I'll Never Find Another You", "A World of Our Own", and the lyrics for "The Carnival Is Over"
"Dusty In Memphis" is a stone-cold classic. Dusty was a once-a-lifetime vocalist, who was amongst the best in any era. She even sang a duet with Jimi Hendrix on "Mockingbird", no mean feat. Check out the magnificent "All Cried Out" to catch her at her very best. Gone, but not forgotten.
Dusty teamed up with the Pet Shop Boys in the late 80's, and we were gifted "What Have I Done to Deserve This." It wasn't a good match on paper, but wow. Just wow.
Dusty In Memphis was one of the best albums of the Sixties, which is saying a lot. Every song is great. She was paired with a soul band in Memphis for this incredible album, but had tons of hits before this. Awesome choice!
"The Look of Love" and "Windmills of your Mind" are a couple Dusty favorites of mine. There are lots of live videos of her performing these songs. She always looked beautiful with BIG hair (probably wigs) very feminine styling to go along with her soft voice. She was really big in the 60's and NOT country at all.
Dusty is regarded as one of the all time great female vocalists. Grammy award winner, Hall of fame inductee, she has loads and loads of other great songs.
The Great Dusty Springfield from England was a soulful, pop type singing star. A House Is Not A Home, The Look of Love , are my favorites but she made so many. Dusty, Karen Carpenter and Dionne Warwick are all in the top echelon of great female singers imo. Yes , there are many more as well. Dusty sang beautifully but she also delivered her songs in such a theatrical style too. Just a wonderful and Professional artist who seemed to love singing for all of us.
If you ever check out "Pulp Fiction" this song is featured in one of the most important scenes in the movie and even came back into mainstream popularity for a little while because of it, truly legendary stuff, love her voice.
She was deported from South Africa because she wouldn’t sing to segregated audiences. She had it written in her contract that NO segregated audiences. She was ahead of her time. Well doneDusty
Dusty was a true groundbreaker. She helped break Motown Records in the UK and refused to play to segregated audiences in South Africa during the aparthied era.
Dusty added her great voice to a song by *The Pet Shop Boys* (an '80s group) called "What have I Done to Deserve This?" Though Dusty isn't in it, I suggest their song "West End Girls". If you're not familiar with Bonnie Raitt, add her to *Female Friday* and listen to her songs "Nick of Time", "I Can't Make You Love Me" and "Something to Talk About". Also, Linda Ronstadt singing "You're No Good". Her duet with Aaron Neville called "Don't Know Much" is a really good one.
After Dusty provided backing vocals to What Have I Done to Deserve This, the Pet Shop Boys returned the favour on Nothing Has Been Proved. Indeed they had a big hand in her 80s revival.
I’m pretty sure they already did Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and Linda’s “You’re No Good” but I still want more. Love to see Jordan see Bonnie play the banjo!
@@pattymelt5525 Thank you. I've been going directly to their page, typing in titles to see if they've reacted already, but at least five times, I saw the thumbnail _after_ searching. Dusty Springfield is actually a British pop singer who is very, very soulful in the 60s. I grew up listening to Dusty Springfield as a kid. Rest In Peace
Dusty was one of a kind. I love her and she left us way too early. I Only Want To Be With You is my favorite. She was magic. Her smoky, soulful, deep sound makes me think there are not many like her.
Dusty is such an under the radar kind of artist nowadays. Glad to see you guys reacting to her! Most of the other comments explained her background, but she's definitely a classically '60s artist! Love the videos!
British singer Dusty Springfield had 20 top 40 hit singles in the UK (11 of which reach the top 10) she passed away at the relatively young age of 59 of breast cancer in 1999.
As an R&B and funk drummer, this has been one of my favourites to play for a couple of decades - starts slow, then kicks down to that great funk shuffle with the syncopation on the ride.
@Robert Longwill Well, kicking down is really a term from cars - automatic gearboxes "kick down" a gear for better acceleration when you floor it. You get to the same speed, but it feels faster. It's the same thing in this tune; the actual tempo (speed) of the song barely changes (around 5:30), but the combination of changing the key, bringing up the horn section (trumpets, trombones, saxophones) and increasing the drums makes it feel faster. Syncopation means playing a rhythm that works around, rather than with, another rhythm. If you listen to the ride cymbal (the metallic "ping" in the background), you'll hear the rhythm is far less even than one might otherwise expect. Did that help at all? It's tricky to explain things without falling back on musical jargon. :-D
Dusty was one of the greatest singers ever and inducted in the Hall of Fame. The songs that really show her range are Wishing and Hoping, I only wanna be With You. You don't have to say you Love Me. Brand New Me is also very good.

Aretha was a big fan of Dusty, and of course vice versa.
I actually prefer Dusty’s version of this song, even though Aretha is obviously the Queen of soul! 😀
Pure Memphis soul music sung by a British pop star... originally intended for Aretha Franklin who passed it up at first (too blasphemous) but later did her own version of it... this song is near perfect, a real iconic 60's tune. Memphis produced such great music back then.
I've heard that this tune was also offered to Merilee Rush after she had the hit "Angel of the Morning" with the same Memphis recording group.
I'm pretty sure the Horns were The Memphis Horns who were legendary.
Dusty Springfield also has a great song with the Pet Shop Boys- What have I done to Deserve This. Great 80s song.
Went to the comments to say this. One of my favorite guilty pleasures from the 80's. Hope RSR sees this and reacts to it.
Oh, great suggestion!
Pet Shop Boys!
Thanks loved Dusty
It's a joy to me that you recognize backgrounds singers and detail
I remember discovering this song when Pulp Fiction came out in 1994. A favorit since then.
Same here
Dusty Springfield is one of the great voices from the 60s and has long been a favorite of mine.
😳😳😳😳I’m 71 and loved all her songs. I never even thought that line meant THAT! 😂🤣😭🤣🤣😭🤣😂
@@lindapetro5594 Well my Mom did😂😂😂😂. It only made me more curious to find out what “it” was! 🤣
P.S. Dusty is from London and was a star there on TV and music. She was encouraged to come to America (Memphis) to cut this album. It was a huge success; the entire album is great.
The whole album is terrific!
Actually it was not well received when it came out. Maybe it was not what her fans were used to. Of course, later it was recognised for the masterpiece it was.
@@Russ_Keith I did not know that. Glad people eventually loved it. I loved it from day one! 😁👍
@@lindapetro5594 I did too. But then I've always liked when artists evolve whereas some people just prefer to hear more of what they already like and this was quite a departure from her belting hits. And it didn't hurt that this was my kind of music anyway.
Stone Poneys - “Different Drum” (fronted by Linda Ronstadt) and for more Dusty “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”
"You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" is my favourite Dusty song; it has some brass that you'll like, too.
I've always said that Dusty Springfield was THE FINEST female singer to ever to come out of the UK.
Simple as that!
many many experts in the UK agreed !
I vote for Sandy Denny as # 1 female singer....
Great choice for FF! Dusty has one of the smoothest and unique voices ever! Spooky is another great song from her. I love watching you guys. In my opinion, the best couple on YT!
Dusty Springfield is British! I love her music.
I thought that she was Scottish?
@@srldwg Lulu is Scottish
Dusty's voice is up there with the best of them
So sad she died so young. Originally in The Springfields, not her real name.
@@srldwg Scottish IS British. Actually, Dusty had Irish roots.
Check out: "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", "The Look of Love", "Wishin' and Hopin", "I Only Want to Be With You", and "If You Go Away". So many awesome Dusty songs!
I couldn’t agree more! She did some of the best songs of the era. I love the song “I only want to be with you”. It’s my favorite song she ever did.
As I recall, this song crossed over and turned up on the Pop, R&B, and Country music charts when it was released. Everybody loved it.
Great artist. Loved her performance with Pet Shop boys "What have I done to deserve this".. Excellent song.
Wow what timing. I heard this song last night. The son of the Pastor of the church where we go to got married by his dad. As the groom was walking to the front of the venue, this song was playing
That's awesome.
Hugely talented singer from a talented family. My favorite Dusty song is "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me"
He brother Tom was a gifted writer and producer. He wrote several hit songs for THE SEEKERS, among others. "Georgy Girl", "I'll Never Find Another You", "A World of Our Own", and the lyrics for "The Carnival Is Over"
I love "Spooky".
I never get tired of listening to this song. one of the best voices ever.
"Dusty In Memphis" is a stone-cold classic. Dusty was a once-a-lifetime vocalist, who was amongst the best in any era. She even sang a duet with Jimi Hendrix on "Mockingbird", no mean
feat.
Just wow.
And they also recorded the song "Nothing Has Been Proved" for the 80's movie "Scandal". Seek that one out. It's amazing.
Dusty In Memphis was one of the best albums of the Sixties, which is saying a lot. Every song is great. She was paired with a soul band in Memphis for this incredible album, but had tons of hits before this. Awesome choice!
American song + British singer = powerful combination. Dusty Springfield was a wonderful interpreter of songs and had a distinctive soulful voice. RIP
Great reaction to a wonderful song. Quick story, my uncle went to see her in a local club in UK, he asked her to dance & she did! His claim to fame 😊
One of great voices in music.
She got a little resurgence in the 80's with the pet shop boys and the song" what have I done to deserve this" ❤️
And Pulp Fiction
*The Look of Love* is awesome. I think it's the song that most accentuates the sensual side of her voice.
I have been waiting a long time for Dusty to show up on your female Friday. Thank you guys. She has a lot more to offer.
The greatest female vocalist to come out of England - her voice was one of the best in the world
"The Look of Love" and "Windmills of your Mind" are a couple Dusty favorites of mine.
So glad you’re reacting to Dusty. She’s English and was a huge star, so many great hits. You should react to her singing live! Such a performer.
Dusty was a true artist. Wishing and Hopping.is worth a listen. Thanks for the memory, it made me smile.
So glad you opened the lid on Dusty! You really should do look of love!
If you ever check out "Pulp Fiction" this song is featured in one of the most important scenes in the movie and even came back into mainstream popularity for a little while because of it, truly legendary stuff, love her voice.
I was thinking that too! Or the cypress hill sample
FINALLY!! Ready to see Amber lose her mind.... I should of gotten popcorn
Absolutely
SUCH an amazing album, Dusty is wonderful -
British singer tapping into the Memphis sound... country is in there, but so is a lot of soul
She was deported from South Africa because she wouldn’t sing to segregated audiences. She had it written in her contract that NO segregated audiences. She was ahead of her time. Well doneDusty
She is one of the gems of British music, a wonderful lady.
Dusty is an amazing singer she does a lot of amazing songs another of her hits is You don’t have to say you love me. Great reaction.
Amazing vocalist, very versatile. She sang a lot of different genre's over her career. So many great songs to enjoy. She passed away too soon
Dusty was a true groundbreaker. She helped break Motown Records in the UK and refused to play to segregated audiences in South Africa during the aparthied era.
And this one by Dusty Springfield was also on our list descend you rock on we love you
Dusty ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@Polyglot85to90
Thanks for the information. I don't remember that song and will have to check it out.
I’m pretty sure they already did Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and Linda’s “You’re No Good” but I still want more. Love to see Jordan see Bonnie play the banjo!
Long long time !
@@pattymelt5525
Thank you.
I've been going directly to their page, typing in titles to see if they've reacted already, but at least five times, I saw the thumbnail _after_ searching. I've even tried to edit some of my requests because of that, but I can't keep up.
I did get to see the reaction for Bonnie's "I Can't Make You Love Me". :)
Thanks again.
“You don’t have to say you love me” and “The Look of Love” really display her vocal talent - sensuous is a good description
Dusty Springfield is actually a British pop singer who is very, very soulful in the 60s. I grew up listening to Dusty Springfield as a kid. Rest In Peace
my mom used to blast this song while doing house work. Or when we did housework. 40 years later I do housework, I blast this song.
Man Dusty had that soul music in her veins. Dusty is British too. I always thought she was American myself
Dusty in Memphis is one of the greatest albums ever front to back.
Requesting AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN: The Ronettes "Be My Baby" Please and thank you!
Dusty was one of a kind. I love her and she left us way too early. I Only Want To Be With You is my favorite. She was magic. Her smoky, soulful, deep sound makes me think there are not many like her.
My favorite song by her is a house is not a home. Also she is from a family band way back in the day
You Two are just amazing, the love that you Both have for ALL TYPES OF MUSIC is great. Thank you for being you
As soon as I saw you were reacting to this song, I said “Amber is going to love this!”
Dusty is such an under the radar kind of artist nowadays. Glad to see you guys reacting to her! Most of the other comments explained her background, but she's definitely a classically '60s artist! Love the videos!
I love Dusty Springfield, all of her songs were great, "Anyone Who had a Heart" was a favourite of mine,
Dusty’s voice still makes me weak at the knees! She was and sounded gorgeous, RIP Dusty
British singer Dusty Springfield had 20 top 40 hit singles in the UK (11 of which reach the top 10) she passed away at the relatively young age of 59 of breast cancer in 1999.
Dusty's brother Tom passed away a few weeks ago.
As an R&B and funk drummer, this has been one of my favourites to play for a couple of decades - starts slow, then kicks down to that great funk shuffle with the syncopation on the ride.
I love what you said but I really don't understand it. LOL I'm not a musician whatsoever.
@@awmperry I really appreciate the information it does help yes and I know when it comes to kickdown refers to cars because I used to race
@@awmperry Thank you for the explanation.
I love her recording of “The Look of Love.” So understated and subtle. But she was a powerhouse.
I love watching you younger people's rection to the music I grew up on. We took this for normal. Keep up the good work.
Dusty was one of the greatest singers ever and inducted in the Hall of Fame. The songs that really show her range are Wishing and Hoping, I only wanna be With You. You don't have to say you Love Me. Brand New Me is also very good.
Dusty is wonderful.
