There’s no doubt that Dusty Springfield was the best female blue eyed soul singer ever. The sad part about her is that she had a very troubled life. RIP Dusty

What I loved about the Ed Sullivan Show (we watched it every Sunday) everybody sang with the orchestra or with a group. Performances were live there was no lip-synching on The Ed Sullivan Show. Ed wouldn't allow it. That's what I loved about this show and about this time.

Ed's rule of live singing backfired with The Doors when they did "Light My Fire". He understandably didn't shake their hands & never had them back.

Dusty pretty much introduced soul music to Britain - when it was largely alienated in the US - and is possibly important in that. Also in her voice. And, oh, not performing to apartheid audiences in South Africa. That probably too, but these days it's hard to tell....

Hi Guys greetings from England 🇬🇧 Dusty was an iconic english singer with such a rich voice!!! Dusty was born in London and was one of the first ever female english singers to make it big in America 🇺🇸 and she was part of the famous English invasion of The USA in the 1960s.tragically Dusty passed away far too early in 1999 and you should check out Dusty singing "The Look of Love" this really is a great song. Also in the 1980s Dusty and The Pet Shop Boys recorded a song together called "What Have I Done To Deserve This" and this song shows a different style to Dusty Singing.

English by birth, proudly Irish by heritage. She was born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien. It may be possible to get more Irish than that ... but not *much* more.

Female blue-eyed soul from an Irish girl. The song was originally given to Aretha. She turned it down because of its suggestive sexual topic. She eventually recorded it anyway, after Dusty had the hit with it. Dusty and her siblings started out as The Springfields and were popular in Britain. They wrote songs that became hits for The Seekers. Elvis loved those musicians and the production, which became known as The Memphis Sound. Elvis came to that studio a year later and recorded a few albums there, which are now Elvis In Memphis. Check out the Elvis songs, "Stranger in My Hometown" and "Baby, You're Wearing That Loved on Look" for Elvis' Memphis sound with the same musicians and similar arrangements.

The Windmills of Your Mind is another great one by Dusty. Noel Harrison performed the song for the movie The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) and it won an Oscar for Best Song, but I prefer Dusty's version on the Dusty in Memphis album.
Sting later covered it for the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair.

This is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). "Son Of A Preacher Man" is her most famous song. But she had a lot of hits such as "Wishin' & Hopin'", "I Only Want To Be With You", "I'll Try Anything", "The Look Of Love", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" & many more.

I think this was the first Dusty Springfield song I heard when I was a teenager 50 years ago! I always thought she was a Southern woman after hearing this song. To my surprise she turns out to be English! You should really listen to her cover of If You Go Away (the BBC performance)! The song is originally in French and is called Ne Me Quitte Pas. In this performance she actually sings a verse in the original French. Very moving!

I left home aged 16 after a major spat with my family. Nowhere to live. No work. Nothing to look forward to & too much pride to accept any fault. Survived the London streets of the mid '60's for nearly a year. Heard 'Going Back' playing on a radio, somewhere. It hit a chord & I took Dusty's advice. That song turned my life around.
      Thank you, Dusty. R.I.P.

This British artist was often mistaken by radio listers to b=e a Black female artist of the "Motown" record label, in the mid 60s. She got soul! Once she appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, a lot of jaws dropped in surprise. Great artist, and very Big in the 1960s. Her and Petula Clark, were maybe the only female artists of "The British Invasion," of the 1960s.

Loved Dusty as a kid in England, with her group, the Springfields, with her brother. The sole exception was their take on 'Spanish Harlem', which didn't stand up to the original, which I'd just heard and was dismayed to hear a relatively pallid cover, as was the custom in those days. Was delighted when she went solo and crossed the pond sometime after my family did. She certainly earned her accolades and at minimum cult status all these years later. Thanks for this.

She was already an International star, but the luster was wearing off a bit by '68, and the album Dusty In Memphis (released in March 1969 and meant to boost her career) was actually a flop in the US and UK (despite SON OF A PREACHER MAN single success), but by 1973 it was starting to gain a pop cult following. THE LOOK OF LOVE (1967)was her big signature hit, as it was featured in Casino Royale (she did quite a few Bacharach-David songs). Seventies and eighties her career cooled down, but she had a significant comeback hit with Pet Shop Boys in 1987 with WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESREVE THIS? and I recommend the Official Music Video for you reaction!

I highly recommend Peggy Lee. Wonderful sultry voice. The songs most people know from her are "Fever" and "He's a Tramp". Do check her out! :)

Dusty was responsible for getting a legendary group signed to her label. (Led Zeppelin) She knew the guys from working in the same recording studio several times
