To this day it's hard to watch that scene where Dana dies and Alice cries in the hallway. My best friend died of cancer a few years back. I loved her so much. I really felt for Alice because I never got to say goodbye.
As soon as Alice left the room my thoughts were ‘those f’ing writers are going to let Dana die alone’. In my head I was like ‘stop dawdling Alice get back to the bloody room!’. The most disappointing thing about this story line was letting Dana die alone. So sad!
I think it took balls that most TV shows don't have, I liked that about it, even if I missed Dana. I'm glad they didn't chicken out because they didn't want to disappoint fans
The connection to a character where so many people feel so strongly about her shows how well written these characters were. As much as I wish Dana hadn't died, I'd wish the same about a real life friend, but such is life. I think it was a good decision to go through with it, especially because of the fan reaction.
I still cry like a fucking baby whenever I watch the scene of Alice crying in the hallway. I really wished Dana wasn’t killed off. I wanted to see if just maybe, Alice and Dana still had a shot. they really loved each other.
Dana Fairbanks was the best character on the series but I understand why it had to be done. I would have preferred Jenny die because she was insufferable but the truth is, life isn't always rainbows and unicorns. Sometimes good people, people we love, die without rhyme or reason.
I have never been so hearbroken over a character death in my life. Dana Fairbanks was the most relatbale character on that show to me and to have her taken away in a singular season felt so rushed. Like she found out she had cancer, got the lump removed, got sicker, and died. Like, fuck could've at least dragged the storyline to like season 5.
what killed me more than them actually having her die was the fact that they never showed Alice grieving after the fact (besides the breaking down in the hospital scene when she gets the news). Were we really supposed to believe that Alice would so easily get over the death of someone she literally had a shrine to at one point? She held on for months after their breakup, deeply depressed, medicated even, and unable to let go, then poof....we never see her crying or talking about missing Dana after her death. Her grief was handled about as badly as that whole Dana dies story line. Totally unrealistic to the character of Alice. I hated the way they handled it. One of the most genuine and most loved characters was just erased with little fanfare (no, that cheesy breast cancer bike ride story line doesn't really count as a serious exploration of either grief, death, or friendship). It was a trite pink ribbon placed over the death of a character who deserved much more.
EM Medrano so true omg, i started watching this show just recently and dana's quickly become my favorite character there. The fact that she died alone without having her family and friends and LARA her gf atm omg by her side when she died are just sad... not to mention her cat died as well back in s2 :( i feel like the most happiest moment that dana get was coming from playing tennis/hangout w alice/be with lara. Anyways she died too soon :( like she only noticed there's a lump on her breast and died afterwards on the same season?! There's just a lot to take..
I totally disagree. I think Alice's grief was handled really well because it was honest and akin to her character. I mean, Alice "handled" Dana's death by self-medicating with pills, which is also what she did when her and Dana broke up. Her relationship with Lara was also a byproduct of her grief. She numbed herself with meds and sex. It wasn't until she spread Dana's ashes that she let herself break down again (re: the scene at Dana's old camp where she starts sobbing on Bette's shoulder). Then, during Shane's wedding she finally stops running from her emotions, ends things with Lara, and tries to start the process of moving on with her life.
Killing Diana was wrong because you kept away hope to people who were maybe watching the show and ware fighting their battle against cancer. We all know cancer can kill... it does happen every day, what people need is the hope and strength to fIght .....
Hmm. I don't think Ilene should regret Dana dying as such - breast cancer & death are highly relevant storylines and up to her death it was very moving television. What I will critique is the awful funeral scene. It focused so heavily (& far too much) on Dana's parents ignoring her friends that it didn't show any of her friends really grieving. I expected all the women to be howling uncontrollably with tears & grief at the funeral. It should've been a HUGE sobfest production, especially Alice and they're actually all quite composed sitting at the back of the church. The whole scene seems unnatural, doesn't flow and actors appear awkward. I understand the theme about Dana's parents being homophobic but they had actually accepted (on a reluctant level) Dana's homosexuality when she was with Tonya so there was a plot inconsistency with the funeral scene. I recently re-watched the series & noticed this scene more than any other truly stands out as not as well crafted as Dana's character deserved or the well crafted scenes leading up to Dana's death. For eg, Leisha Hayley's performance falling to the floor at the hospital, contemplative scenes of characters intuiting something was wrong at the same time Dana passed away is fantastically produced television. Then it falls very flat with the funeral scene. I think what fans disliked about Dana dying - to drill down to a granular level - is that *FANS didn't get to grieve the loss of Dana in a *significant way. She wasn't shown the respect & love fans thought she deserved because of the (wrong) angle (sorry if my film terms aren't exact) of the funeral scene. Dana's friends weren't sad, they were ostracized & angry. Perhaps fans wanted a more honorable respectful and even VIPish funeral for Dana - she was a minor tennis player celebrity after all. The scattering of the ashes was a token, too late in the day & piecemeal. The focus on Dana's parents rejecting Alice meant the funeral was about *homophobia, not grief and respect for a character fans had grown to love. Fans saw the characters friends also not have space to grieve - this is far *too much struggle & pain for fans to deal with - even if it is a work of fiction - fans relate emotionally to deep content. It's psychologically quite complex. 🕉️ 🤗
The thing is that was actually very accurate. My friends family reluctantly accepted my friends partner but when she died they tried to exclude us all. She was my best friend of 13 years they had been together for 6 years and known each other longer than we had. Her parents knew us well, knew were we lived too, but, the only reason we were kept informed or allowed to the funeral was because her sister went against her parents wishes and told us what was happening. At the funeral we were kept in the back and in the picture memories they were only pictures of her childhood not really anything that would show we knew her. It felt like they were trying to cover up that part of her life hide the fact that she was gay and any of us who approved or aided in that lifestyle.
I watched the L word more than 100 times ( it was nd still always my fav show) and I always have to skip that ep when Dana died, but still I don't believe it was a mistake. That was so real, in life we always have to be prepared to lose very close people. That TV show is telling stories of everyday life, and it would be clichè if they didn't show us some drama, because that's the way life is. That was hard but we have to deal with it !!!
The part that bugged me so much was that weird foreshadowing in Lone Star where Alice's cutout of Dana in the landfill is there. Some pretty fucked up foreshadowing if you ask me.
I hated that they killed Dana. But I feel after her death the show's dynamic changed and I feel the mourning was glossed over for her to die that way and for her mourning to be over so fast made me question the friendships of the circle. I dont think the writing helped seal those loose ends in regards to post dana's death
I always thought it was because Erin Daniels wanted to leave the show........ But still, I didn't miss her that much. Never really forgave her for using and betraying Alice for Lara like that, and then becoming abusive towards Lara just because the cancer pushed sex off the table. I guess I was one of the few who didn't want her to survive the cancer, but if there's one thing I don't forgive Chaiken for, it's the way she portrayed the LGBT community, as basically just looking for sex and unable to have long-term relationships. On a side note though, Leisha Hailey NAILED the bit when Alice breaks down after Dana dies. It was as if her partner or family member had died in real life. Shame the show only ever got one acting Emmy nomination (Ossie Davis, RIP).
The scene where Alice just broke down and cried in the hallway, man, that's some stellar acting right there.
Yesss
absolutely, brilliant acting!
Gutted me
Gutted me
Leisha Hailey is so underrated.
To this day it's hard to watch that scene where Dana dies and Alice cries in the hallway. My best friend died of cancer a few years back. I loved her so much. I really felt for Alice because I never got to say goodbye.
Leisha should get an award for her performance when Dana died .. it was a genuine reaction
Tears every time. It’s so real.
This decision was horrible. But made the story very truly
That fucking flower...
Dana was such a sweetheart, I cried so hard when she died 😭 Thankfully my gf was at work, but she was probably my favorite #ripdana
I still cry . We still "ride for dana"
As soon as Alice left the room my thoughts were ‘those f’ing writers are going to let Dana die alone’. In my head I was like ‘stop dawdling Alice get back to the bloody room!’. The most disappointing thing about this story line was letting Dana die alone. So sad!
Dana never died.

I have never cried harder during a death on screen, this shit hit so hard💔
Dana and her frikkin perfect jaw. Oh Dana. She was my bae when I was watching it for the first time LOL

We know it's a show but looking at it still touched me as it did back then, amazing story well done

Chorei tanto com a morte da Danna 💔💔😭 queria que ela voltasse
Dana's death is her one regret that she would go back and change? I would call that season 6, but what do I know.
Rip Dana and Jenny! 💜
The part that bugged me so much was that weird foreshadowing in Lone Star where Alice's cutout of Dana in the landfill is there. Some pretty fucked up foreshadowing if you ask me.
Dude you shouldnt even kill her.
Очень понравился сериал. А продолжение будет?
Well.. make Erin Daniels come back as a different character...to join the group again.. disregard the season 6 pls.....

Hell no! That story was so good, vibrant, necessary,& bold. The show wouldn't have been as good without it. It was a great choice.
I was sad that Dana died
WE DON'T FORGIVE YOU ILENE!
Tina will come back???
I want bette and Tina
if youre talking about the reboot -i heard she probably won't because the actress isn't really into that, and apparently she's mostly a painter now
Just saw the trailer for the reboot NOPE NOPE-ITTY NOPE
yeah that was a bad choice
the show basically died with her. but up to that point it was an amazing show.
I will never forgive her.

she dies ?????? i am in season 2 rn i dont think ill watch the rest i cant have another breakdown about people dying
I never really cared for Dana.
Don’t get me wrong I loved Dana but I didn’t ship her with Alice as much as everyone else did, I preferred Alice and Tasha
No we never forgive you for that ..
Yeah just cried again smh and on my birthday too. Smh i will never forgive her for this
I always thought it was because Erin Daniels wanted to leave the show........

I didn't even recognize Dana o.o
