I'm honestly fed up of corporate america, if it weren't for the need to pay bills I would not waste my breath on 98% of the people I come across working here. It's frustrating to be underpaid, overworked, and unappreciated.

Being a young black women in any career is a strike against you even with other black people. Sometimes working for companies with black owners help. That's why as a black woman having your side business is important so you don't have to rely so much on other people

Never be afraid to walk away. It took me having a breakdown and going into depression before I got out. All because I was afraid there wouldn’t be anything better that would support my family financially….I had forgotten whom I served…God always supplies.

She is definitely correct. Being black in corp America is often lonely as you will be typically the only one or at best, one of a very small few. You will also find yourself an outsider on teams accordingly. And the BIG one, whereas your non black colleagues can make mistakes and its recognized as just that, heaven forbid you do. If you make a mistake, no matter how small, your entire credibility comes into question. That said, corp America is where the money is. The hand we hold is not all bad, but it must be played well. Key is to "kill them with competence" and do not be afraid to call out your competence/wins. People respect those who have kicked their azz.
I've been in corporate for only two months and I'm getting tired of it already
I applied for a CRA position and the way they looked so uninterested in me, it made me feel bad. Then I was told that I didn’t get the job because I needed more acute care experience. At that time I had almost 7-8 years in nursing. They’ll deny us for anything.

BW deal with the same issues as BM & also has to deal with sexism on top of everything else! But it amazes me how you're not saying that for both ends of the spectrum, conveniently! I had a terrible black supervisor who was a woman but for the most part as a clinician i can say i avoid some of these issues.
May be an unpopular opinion, but being a black woman in senior leadership seems AWFUL. They end up being the company’s b****, spokesperson for all things black and DEI, and get run INTO the ground with extra work and responsibility because they’re “so competent” AKA willing to be a mule for the sake of earning their stripes. That’s just what I’ve observed at least.

I retired from corporate America in 2020 and now live a modest, comfortable life. Plan your future carefully and independently. You cannot rely on them for your financial future. Pensions from corporate America can change like the weather!
100% they dont have a degree and get the higher positions and you have to do all the work.Oh and dont complain because the microaggresion is real.

You are so right! I been feeling down about my current supervisor.. We have a quota and I meet it everyday, but never get credit. When I ask questions she either doesn’t know or will ask someone else. I can see if it was seldom.. she carries on that way ALOT. My judgment is she isn’t knowledgeable about the job. That just goes to show how most of these businesses only hire their friends/family members who lack skills. You Should BE Thankful, but Some people Never Are!
There are black women at my level who are rude af but aren’t like that to non-blacks. I am also being disrespected by lower level employee possibly because I am a younger black woman. Fortunately, my management is supportive and filed a complaint with HR for me.

All facts!!!!! And sometimes as the only Black in the department, they will make your life a living HELL......I experienced this factor so I went back to Healthcare. If you don't have anyone to support you in the office you will not succeed, no matter how good or credentials you have.
I needed this comment today! Everything you’ve stated I’m going through and it has only been a month. I’m in Education administrative support and the claws are out with these women. I also came from Healthcare and they say it’s bad but Education seems worse. I’m seeking to go back as well.

Yes I went through the same thing in corporate America. If the managers are white, male or female, they will look for ways to sabotage you and get you out of there. If your coworkers are white, they will be passive aggressive toward you. It all boils down to JEALOUSY.
Even in school, I get passive aggressiveness a lot.

Yes. I got terminated by a entire management team that had black women. A black woman director, payroll manager, and department manager. I told them a co-worker was rude to me and disrespectful but they took the guy side because they saw he as a “friend”. They threw me out like I was nothing after I dedicated time to do my job there. I felt they just didn’t like me because I was younger, full of energy, intelligent, bold, and professional. When I see that “oh we got to look out for our own people” it’s all lies. I look out for me now and watch my own back. I don’t that’s black women or men like that in management roles. They’ve been my worst mangers or the companies they had roles in are always a toxic work culture.
@@FourwindsofsuccessSadly, I had a similar experience with a female Black Director. She took the side of a less experienced young white girl over mine when I complained to her about how the young white girl was preventing me from doing my job. My worst managers have been Black Women! I took the job because the Director was a Black woman and started as a contractor like I did, but it was the biggest lesson in not all skin folk are kin folk! 😔🤦🏽♀️

Loved your comments. Your no. 1 was dead on right… I was just telling my son, who just graduated with a degree in Biology/ conc Chemistry in June 2022 that he is required to have a degree but many of his co-workers will not have degrees. It is a fact of life . I tell him constantly that his dad and I Would Not have the corp jobs we have if we didn’t have degrees.
Black women must start their own businesses. We must start our own becaise we cant continue to work for them forever.
All true. Been working since I was 15 as well, and I’ve experienced all of them. I have my MBA, multiple certifications, etc. Did all of this work to get my resume in front of others and I still get slighted on the regular. Very frustrating!

For the past four years I had 2 majors salary increase ... and 2 bonuses.
I'm right now negotiating my company rates for the usage of my trademark multi-million savings technics.
Or I will leave and take it with me to the competition company 🤣
They are sweating in their suits about it...
if your going to get an MBA,don't put yourself in massive debt that you don't plan to payoff in a short amount of time.
The last point is so true. It seems as if blacks don't want to help other blacks in a lot of cases.
It's because they are so busy kissing the badonkadonks of the white higher ups 😂. They are what we call House Niggas😂. Malcolm X explains the difference between a House Nigga and a Field Nigga on UA-cam, and the House Nigga are the black people you see today in higher positions in corporate America who will treat their black subordinates like kaka.
Don’t be afraid to sue when there’s a clear case of discrimination. Of course there’s also the real challenge of proving discrimination that is not so evident but it may be worth pursuing to whatever extent (settling out of court).
I realized I was underpaid while working in corporate too. I did things the right way in my life and got shit for it. I can barely afford anything. Now idc and do wtf I want as long as I can sustain my bills. Quiet quitting is real.
As is living a relatively meaningless life. I know you don't have children, but perhaps you'd feel differently if you did. Working hard & actually pushing yourself, not just at your 9 - 5 job, but in life generally, is a key to happiness/contentment/fulfillment.
We as black people and women must stop the crabs in a bucket mentality. It sounds as though, if we can get together everywhere and begin a process toward developing our own corporate communities and teaching the literacy we already have to each other and our own people we would be unstoppable. Imagine if we begin to hold seminars that would mobilize and harness the power of black communities all over this country to show them that we could all move forward together if we could create and unify our own black businesses no matter how large or small. Think if we as black people took advantage of the online and digital based business ideas that are low cost to start and educate our communities about money and how it works for ourselves. We must free ourselves from the clutches of the government. They have been our ruin from day one. We MUST become owners more than we are consumers unless we own our own businesses. Black women could definitely re-educate the black communities. We must get together with our men and bring our communities back from financial ruin. We have the knowledge and now the technology is here. We can create large platforms from across the nation to help our people thrive again. Imagine what would happen if every black household started an online, digital business, or any small business or business idea?
As a black male graphic designer in Houston I've literally faced 100% well except for the last one.
But that's because I've never worked with another black graphic designer ever 😔
Everywhere I go I'm the only black person there and sometimes the only black person to have ever worked there they usually pay me like crap most companies try to start me off around 9 to 9.50 an hour.
In mind you I have both an associates in a bachelor's it also makes no sense to get a master because nobody really takes that seriously in this field they just care more about experience.
Meanwhile I find out that the people who previously had held my job made much more, in the moment you try and ask for more he gets so offended like how dare you ask.
I still remember one oil and gas job I had when I asked for a raise mind you after the owner constantly told me I was doing a great job over a few years he got really offended when I asked for a raise mind you I've done more to deserve it but still.
But what really got to me was when my white balls complimented my work after 1 year there and he opened up his mouth and said:
"Yeah Brandon I know it's tough being black I mean it's like you have to work three times as hard just to get anywhere"
All the while he knowingly is paying me like crap in those words just slid out of his mouth like it was nothing.
And on the flip side you can leave but what are you leaving to? Because in my field there's literally dozens of people lined up more than eager to take your place so it's a worker you have zero leverage because they can just let you go and higher the next one.
Thank you for sharing your story, I’m also a black male graphic designer. I’ve experienced everything, tbth I’m at my breaking point. I love design and love the creative process, but not when it comes for working for some of these businesses. More importantly, it at the expense of my mental health.

@@soindifferent_Hi, I'm from the UK and it's the same ish, different continent. I ultimately had to leave corporate and am building my own copywriting business. I promise this isn't spam but if I want different, I have to move differently. I need to connect with graphic designers to work with on some spec pieces and grow my network. You might be toying with the idea of going it alone and this could be a good way of turning the wheels in the background.

@@TikaRose222 actually it's easier for black women in the field, is a matter-of-fact women in general are very much pushed and promoted and welcome including black women.
Everything you said is true, everything. If companies want more people in leadership roles, they need to hire and train more people of color, to promote from within, but unfortunately, many companies would not do that out of fear of losing their own influence and power. Which goes back your point, just because there is a black or person of color in leadership doesn't mean they will help you for the same reason a white person wont help you, fear.
1. Less money
2. Less validation
3. The standards are insanely high.
This is business, don't take it personal. Its a shark eat shark world.
Simple fix: Learn everything you possibly can in every position you have, take that information and refine it so that it is better than what is currently on the market, find a big client that has appreciates you, start your own business from that client, be your own boss, compete with the same corporations that mistreated you and put them out of business

Being treated badly because of your hairstyle is another reality of working in a white space.
I’ve been unemployed for nearly 2 years and understand first hand the frustrations of trying to advance or progress in corporate America as a BW. Started following minority job assistance influencers and it’s certainly helping at the very least, in getting visibility and even an interview or two.
To be unemployed for the past two years, when employment is so staggeringly high, is interesting, but hard to make much of without more information. Wishing you the best of luck!

@@merrytunes8697 Hey, thanks for taking the time to read my comment. I was finally able to find gainful employment about 4 months ago and it was by pure luck. The company had hired 2 before me and both quit. They were desperate and when I came along with more than enough of the qualifications, they gave me a try and I’ve been happy every since. The two Women they hired before me were YT and had found much better, higher paying jobs soon after onboarding working for Shell and Chevron. So it opened up an opportunity for me and I was so thankful! I was also happy for the other two that they were able to move on to such amazing companies on a whim. They are truly fortunate to have such good outcomes.
@@scottsherman5262 plenty of employment for service based positions but not so much for technical positions. It was highly competitive and they always chose those with just a little less experience but looked like they would belong.
I hate when people tell me my identity is a strike against me. If I was at least good at my work, there’s laws in place to protect against workplace discrimination, but that’s after the discrimination happens usually.

Have you worked under a female lead workplace/team yet? Well I have it's horrible. Also there are less women in leadership roles anyway, So how do expect a minority of the female group to be in the majority of the these leadership roles. You can just silent quit, if you are going beyond your job roles and expecting something in return.

ALL TRUE. I worked for, at the time, THE Largest Media RATINGS company. Not only did I backtrack in my career to get my foot in the door BUT I, a long with other Black people, were openly discriminated against. I had the masters,. Certifications, Several years of management and watched as we were passed over for WP and Hispanics with no degrees, never met requirements and were incompetent. BUT they were "friends" of management. WP and Hispanics were doing what we KNOW them to do, the bigger issue were other Blacks who were hired or promoted because of my being vocal as to discrimination and racism! I finally walked away and found these type of work places to be a recipe for good living! 😉 Received my therapist licensing, started a retail side hustle Thanks to that company's infusion of cash into my accounts and doing well. Yes we all face obstacles and have lemons thrown at us daily but jump over those obstacles while sipping your lemonade 😉🍹 DO NOT BE AFRAID TO FIGHT BACK‼️

And you’re right I had one black female manager. We were cool but she once threw me under the bus. I had a talk with her, a black woman talk, and while she said she understood, she said she couldn’t promise it wouldn’t happen again. I was, oh ok ( from then I knew I couldn’t trust her). Then when me and a yt lady were the onky ones in the whole company that knew a software, you you think they say were going to take the lead? Who you think help support them? My black manager. Corporate America is something else. I just be wanting to work and go home but there is a bunch of BS!

Spent my entire working career in corporate America and in my experience, a black female CANNOT be fired for any reason.

Let me also say most time in corporate settings age has a lot to do about not being heard more than anything else. Maybe just being in corporate life doesn’t fit you. I couldn’t deal with the politics so I started my own business. Much happier now. Good luck
