Oscar Expert: "They wanted to end on the moment."
Brother Bro: "You don't know shit!"
Oscar Expert - 0. Brother Bro - 1.
Funnily enough though, I think Oscar Expert is 100% right, they wanted to end that way (especially since Best Pic was super predicatble) but ended up looking silly when Hopkins won, especially since he wasn't there.
@@Athomass No doubt. That's exactly what they were expecting... but you know what they say about assumptions...
@@Athomass Ending on Best Actor was weird choice either way.
Boseman wins - it's depressing. Hopkins wins - he's not there.
What it proved pretty definitively is that the folks coordinating the show have no idea who the winners will be
Brother Bro Expert
Biggest tragedy is announcing Best Picture first before the acting awards because they were expecting Chadwick Boseman to win only for the voters to spoil their plan. It is still the fault of the producers though for even changing the order of announcement.
I actually liked the Best Picture before the acting awards better. McDormand winning Best Actress would have spoiled Nomadland’s win, since it had lost Screenplay and Cinematography. But they should’ve had Best Actress for last. At least all nominees were there to accept the award.
@Don Faustino Anthony Hopkins wasn’t
It made the event very anticlimactic. If you're going to break a tradition there should be a valid reason you're doing so. Otherwise, leave it be. With Hopkins not even on Zoom to accept the award it just ended so awkwardly.
@@SomethingSomethingg Yeah the end was so random and anticlimactic
It wasn’t a tragedy, it was stupidity.
Searchlight does it again: Slumdog, 12yrs a slave, Birdman, The Shape of Water, and now Nomadland. Smaller studios, including Searchlight, NEON (Parasite) and A24 (Moonlight) have proven that “smaller” films with lower budgets can earn respect.
Moonlight doesn t deserve the oscar
@@matteot.f4872 no.
@@matteot.f4872 seethe, hater
It's amazing how Nomadland is technically a Disney movie
@@virgiliomartinezerickson8044 yes. Disney bought out Fox’s motion picture entities, including their smaller artistically oriented studio (Fox Searchlight) in 2019. Many of us were concerned that they dilute the art for more “crowd pleasing” films, but Nomadland eased those concerns.
I have to admit, I din't see Frances win comming, I thought it's Carey vs Viola. I'm sad for Chadwick and Carey, but I'm happy for Hopkins and Frances two absolute legends.
Come on, if Chadwick wouldn’t have died he would barely been nominated. It’s ridiculous how people want him to win because he passed. And Viola and chadwick was the two winners that everyone wanted because they are black. Viola and Chadwick would not have wanted to win because of their skin colour either
@@ihavegreatcomments8532 Literally no one is saying that he should’ve won just because he died. He gave an amazing performance and people believed he should’ve been rewarded for that. Hopkins also gave a great performance. Literally nothing about OP’s comment warranted you to say that, yet you had to be salty about it.
@@ihavegreatcomments8532 Stop pulling the race card. That's such a weird argument to make. By that you could say Frances and Hopkins won because they're white which gave them the extra edge considering most of their peers in the academy are white. Davis and Boseman did an amazing job and in my personal opinion were better. Frances getting a third oscar...really? I honestly thought the academy was gonna pull a Ledger-was that also just because he's white? Seriously, stop pulling the race card.
@@ihavegreatcomments8532 Viola is a fantastic actress and has nothing to with her skin colour. She transformed herself as Ma. If she won, she would of deserved it. If Chadwick won, he would of deserved it too. Sorry if I have empathy and sympathy for the dead and for the struggle. Just by the fact he kept acting and giving his all while having cancer is enough to deserve something because of all the hard work and pain he went through. Why shouldn't we praise hard working actors?
Every time people of colour wins or get nominated, they always put the race card and yelling "Hollywood so woke", but when white people win, they stay quiet. Such hypocrites.
@@OrterMinat I disagree with him on Viola, but let's be real, if Chadwick didn't die, Best Actor would have been between Hopkins and Ahmed. Chadwick still would have gotten nominated though.
This late career peak for Anthony Hopkins is so cool. I thank his amazing role on Westworld a few years ago; reminded the casting world he is still here to bring incredible performances to screen.
Cinematography, Leading actress, and leading actor were surprising
And song!
Literally thought Nomadland had cinematography in the bag. Actress & Actor weren’t that surprising for me

I do like that both Anthony Hopkins and Frances McDormand won purely based on merit. Previous winners, no campaign, no narrative. And yet they pevailed.
Yes, Anthony Hopkins is not campaigning at all while Frances was probably busy campaigning for the movie itself instead of herself.
The Oscar that made me scream the most was a tie between Song and Cinematography.
The producers after the announcing for Best Actor: 🤡🤡🤡
Carey Mulligan wore the perfect oscar dress 😍
I'm very happy for Anthony Hopkins, his work in the father was easily one of the beat leading actor roles of the last 5 years. That being said, it was OBVIOUS they put actor in a leading role last to hype up the audience for a Chadwick win. The in memoriam part was shortened, his family was there and the award changed its usual order, like, EVERYTHING was indicative of Chadwick winning. The fact that the academy passed on the chance to award Boseman for his last work, but still capitalized on his image (even gifting an NFT of boseman to guests) is just horrible. At the end, Anthony did a great job but if we're talking how academy politics work, he already had his oscar. This was Boseman's. The whole ending was just proof they clearly weren't prepared for a scenario where he didn't win.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I get people are happy for Hopkins win..but the way they profited off of Boseman's death and made it seem like they were going the Ledger route needs to be talked about-its gross.
It’s been said in another comment thread: the people coordinating the show probably did this thinking Boseman was going to win. They definitely didn’t know Hopkins was going to take it. Sure, it backfired, but you can’t blame them for betting on Boseman after his Critics’ Choice, Globes and SAG wins. And well sure, Hopkins had already won his Oscar, but he also gave the best performance of the year (by far) and the Academy Awards what they think was the best of the year (even though they might not get it right sometimes), not what would look pretty to award.
I’m very happy for Anthony but I imagine that was very disappointing for Chadwick’s family. Everybody bought into the hype, including the show producers. However, the Academy has no obligation to award an actor for his “last work.” It’s not a tribute award. They’re supposed to award the best performance. Frances had two Oscars prior to winning last night and she deserves them all. I’m happy the Academy listened to their hearts and weren’t swayed by the politics.
@@leonardozumaeta4354 i feel the same. i wish the people who coordinated everything wouldn’t have tried to do that. like they don’t know for sure that that would happen! it was a bad decision because now it looks really bad for everyone involved
@@flowerfairies4685 Yes it does suck. They might even had made that decision before BAFTAs and expected Chadwick to win there as well and just sweep the awards season. Still, they shouldn’t have done that and gone for the usual route. Really sad this happened, and well they didn’t even get a speech from Hopkins to end the ceremony with since he wasn’t even there. Poor planning overall
Frances such a worthy winner. People don't get how difficult it is to play against non-actors, and still produce such moving scenes. She carried the whole film.
Oh wait the nomads in the movie were non actors?
@@remiellis972 most of them were non actors yes.
Are they really nomads? And not actors?
@@jongon0848 woww
@@sleinderskiltski9420 yeah they were actual nomads playing fictional versions of themselves.
Thank God Hopkins won! Very deserving. Great reactions.
I am more shocked on the original song surprise than Hopkins or even Mank’s Cinematography win
The winning song is from a best picture nominee, and more respected than Chicago 7, with 6 nominations as well, but no winnings. The other contenders are from movies less appreciated by the Academy. And finally, it wasnt a clear favorite song to win, so the movie factor counts again
@@josecal8081 True but I also accounted the precursor wins when I made my final predictions. Nothing bad with this song really I am happy either way. I just didn’t consider a best picture nomination would affect this category. Like last year Rocketman got it and that was like the only nomination and win.
I'm 90% sure I was the only person rooting for Fight for You...
Frances McDormand is a goddamn legend. The fact that she has more Lead Oscars than thee Meryl Streep is insane.
Living legend as an actor and human 💯
And it’s deserved. Streep hasn’t been good in decades.
Frances has the same amount of acting awards as Meryl (both have 3) but has an extra award as producer for best picture
3 out of 3
Both are overrated.
It was so weird that they changed the order and did Picture before acting. So cringey when Boseman didn’t win at the end and they just ended the show. But Hopkins released a great little speech this morning.
Boseman should not have won, he wasn’t even the second best. The only reason that people thought he should’ve won is because he passed away this year. If he was still alive he would not been predictes to even win, arguably even nominated
@@ihavegreatcomments8532 I mean whoever wins these things is subjective. Hopkins winning is not shocking per se but I loved Boseman’s performance and it was definitely a great one for many people. I do think his performance would have been here even if he was alive, given how strongly Ma Rainey performed in general

I love that after he said Mank’s not gonna win anything else the whole night, Mank immediately won the next award😝
What awards did Mank win, tho?
Damn good on Frances, wonder if she can tie with Katherine Hepburn with four acting oscars.
There’s Macbeth coming this year 👀
She'll probably exceed it but I hope they let Glenn Close or Amy Adams win first.
Damn the only actress who desered this tie was Bette Davis, as much as I love Frances I don't think that's happpening.

The Baftas were actually great for predicting this year.
Again
No, they’re a strong indicator over the last 2 decades. They might as well just eliminate the academy and rename it as bAftas, US version
They redeemed themselves after getting Best Picture wrong for 6 years straight
Is this Frances 4th Oscar overall? I think I saw somewhere that she produced Nomadland... Wow. Absolutely amazing!
She did, that’s why she was on the Producers list
Mcdormand showed that you don’t need to be flashy to win an Oscar.
That's why I'm scared Glenn Close won't win for Sunset Boulevard, whenever she's able to do it as an Oscar vehicle
@Gabriel Castaneda Same with Yuh-Jung Youn, her performance was subtle
Frances McDormand is UNDEFEATED in the Best Actress category
When compared to her Supporting Actress nominations, she’s definitely undefeated
All winners deserve their win
@DARIUS-PETRU SALE You really don’t think The Father deserves Adapted Screenplay? What do you think should have won?
I respect that. I think, like some people have said, it was a little too improvisational to win
You guys were such a fun discovery this year! Thanks for all of the raging insanity and the earnest enthusiasm! Evoking the passion for film that we all wish that we were surrounded by more frequently.
Anthony Hopkins undoubtably had the greatest performance of the year, it wasn’t even close for me. It was genuinely the best acting I’ve seen in years (from new films, I watch a lot of old too). Probably the best performance since 2012, where two transcendent performances faced off- with DDL in Lincoln, and Phoenix in The Master. Hopkins was equally transcendent; an absurdly ambitious and beyond masterful performance. His second Academy Award truly couldn’t be more deserved. Yet, the Oscars really soured his victory by milking Chadwick Boseman’s passing. I feel so sorry for Boseman’s wife who had to attend the ceremony, get a gift bag with her deceased husband’s face in it, wait for the FINAL category, giving her hope that he would win, and then let her down. Ending the show on an uncomfortable moment because the Oscars decided to make it the final category and wouldn’t even let Anthony Hopkins zoom call in to be apart of the event and potentially give a speech. Hopkins, an 83 year old, on holiday in Wales to visit his father’s grave, at greater risk of contracting covid, also already uncomfortable with attending award shows; possibly in part due to having asperger’s... Was made to look like the villain because of the Oscars’ repulsive rules and decisions for the ceremony. Hopkins, Chadwick, his grieving family, and everyone watching deserved much better than this. Hopefully Hopkins can enjoy his very deserved award and that Boseman’s family are satisfied with at least his In Memoriam inclusion. But what a mess.
Yeah you’re right, the Academy is at fault for how the whole thing was handled
The moment we’ve being waiting for
"it didn't get fuck shit or jack" lmfaooo
In fact, the BAFTAs predicted ALL of them with the exception of Cinematography, which I loved that they didn’t because I really was rooting for Mank at the Oscars
McDormand is only behind Hepburn. Insane!
You guys are amazing :) In the end, the BAFTA winners were EXACTLY the same than the Oscars this year, except for Cinematography.
It was great watching the Oscars with you guys since I couldn’t watch it with family this year! Thank you Oscars Expert and Brother Bro!
BOTH OF YOU DESERVE AN OSCARS FOR THAT REACTION
I love that Hopkins won because I love The Father but I'm just still so stunned that Boseman didn't win and McDormand now has her 3rd career Oscar and the only actress alive with the most Oscars for best actress.
No, Katharine Hepburn has 4 for leading actress.

Was early for the live and now im early for this. Y'all are my personal highlight for oscar season!
Your reaction to Hopkins winning best actor was hilarious! And agree, the Baftas are now a strong predictor now forward to the acting categories.
They left Best Actor for last because they knew you'd flip out the most over it
I still feel kinda sad Boseman didn't win
i'm taking it harder than I realized. I wouldn't feel so badly about if his dissenters weren't so damn obnoxious about him losing. 😡
Nah Anthony Hopinks is deserved it
Nah, Anthony Hopkins deserved it. Chadwick was great but Hopkins gave a much superior performance than him
When Frances won i was so happy that i run all across the living room. When Hopkins won i was shocked, pure silence for two minutes. He deserved it and i wanted him to win, but putting that award for last made everyone asume that Chadwick was gonna win
If Jennifer Lawrence has an Oscar then one day Glenn Close, Carey Mulligan, Vanessa Kirby, Andra Day, will get theirs!
Maybe Amanda Seyfried even. This just wasn’t her year
Amy Adams…5 oscar nods but no wins 😞
Jennifer won because a serial rapist made it happen.
Hopkins totally deserves his award, nobody should hate on him, I also wanted Boseman too win but Hopkins was as deserving as him, the only thing that makes me mad is the way in which Soderbergh ruined the ceremony with the passing and the order of the categories, specially best picture, best actor and the In memoriam, was awful and so disrespectful.
Me: Hmm, the Oscars aren't so bad this year
The Oscars in the last 15 minutes: LOL! One sec...
I'm happy with the winners but maaaaan, they messed up the whole show awarding Best Actor last -_-

I don't want to get into arguments about whether Boseman should have won over Hopkins. I don't know enough about either performance, I've just heard that both deserve it. Instead, I want to ask an honest question to whoever arranged the show last night...
...IF BOSEMAN WASN'T GOING TO WIN AND YOU WEREN'T GOING TO HONOR HIM, WHY DID YOU ORDER THE AWARDS THAT WAY AND END ON A FACEPLANT OF A PRESENTATION?
And have his family there like they were going to receive his award on his behalf? they're profiting off of black death-i really wish someone had the balls and discernment to see this but they're all way too excited because grandpa won

so glad this season is over, can’t wait to talk about 2022 predictions
I was waiting for Oscar expert brothers bro reactions
What I'm thinking: if Carey was nominated at the BAFTAs she would have won then her buzz wouldn't have die so early and she would still have a chance.
Loved Carey’s performance, film as a whole needed more love. Was ground breaking just the default female perspective put Emerald Fennel on my forever watch list.
Well good thing is, she won a Critics Choice and Independent Spirit Awards so there are other award shows that acknowledge her performance
I personally think all movies that won deserved to win.
Yes
I wanted Viola to win but I would've been happy with any of the 4 contenders winning honestly, they were all phenomenal. The only two surprises for me were Song (which I was extremely happy about) and Cinematography (which I wasn't very happy about). Very happy The Father won Adapted Screenplay and Actor because it absolutely deserved both awards
McDormand is amazing so happy she has three Oscars! Poor Mulligan though 😔
Delighted the Academy went with the best performances rather than external reasons. Hopkins’s performance was phenomenal, and glad for the Adapted Screenplay win too. McDormand for sure carried Nomadland, no way it would have won Best Picture without her.
The baftas are really good at predicting the Oscar winners! Although I vividly remember Carey Mulligan and Jennifer Lawrence winning bafta and losing Oscars so I guess they're not always correct
It can be a wild card sometimes. BAFTA picked Marion Cortillard and Olivia Colman as Best Actress and they went on to win the Oscar, they also picked Emmanuelle Riva and Imelda Staunton as Best Actress but both end up eventually losing at the Oscars.
Pleeaasseee Oscar Expert and Brobro make an oscar retrospective starting from 1975 to now. I really enjoy watching retrospectives.. It refreshes my memories as to how i love watching oscars... I will be waiting forward for more contents.
They thought Chadwick was the winner
They probably had a tribute for him that they planned to play and it would have ended on an emotional note and then they were like oh fuck it’s over now okay goodbye and goodnight
15:28 so funny when he backed away because he thought his brother was gonna hit him! hahaha
As someone who’s favorite movie this year was Promising Young Woman, I’m surprised Carey was even in the top 3 guesses to win for so many people. Yes, she did a great job but it doesn’t seem like the type of film or performance the Oscars would usually give the time of day. It’s great she at least got the nomination. She’s been doing great work for years and barely ever gets the recognition she deserves.
she was up for Best Actress for "An Education", tho.
You guys are awesome you entertain the hell out of me you guys are so knowledgeable about movies thank you also I think chadwick boseman was an amazing actor but I'm very excited that anthony hopkins won it was so well deserved 👏

Nobody wants to make big movies to Oscar anymore, thanks to Marvel and their superhero brainwash
Finaly we can wrapped up this season. Now hurry up and bringing out the 2022 Oscar prediction! I wanna know what i must hyping for
Pretty pleased with major categories other than cinematography. Still scratching my head on that one
Been rooting for Carey since the Globes & the night before the Oscars, i watched clips from PYW and other movies.
Accepted the fact that Carey might loose to Viola cause i thought Academy would finally honor another woman of colour (and since Carey's performance is not the type Academy tend to root for; Glenn Close's Fatal Attraction, Rosamund Pike's Gone Girl, etc)
But i'm still proud of Frances getting 2 Oscars in like 5 minutes 👏👏
Also shout out to Anthony Hopkins. His 2 Oscars are richly deserved.
"Speak Now" was never an obvious winner LOL. If they didn't love One Night in Miami... to give it a BP nomination, why would they award it for Song? I think it was always Judas to lose this category given how much support the Academy gave it.
Watched last night and still am first here this morning!
Frances McDormand unbothered queen 👑
I just love you guys.
Thank you and much love to The Oscar Expert and Brother Bro for an awesome Oscar season and some amazing reactions!! Has anyone found a good site for Oscar stats/trivia this year yet??
Is 2022 going to be the most competitive year ever? All the big blockbusters from 2020 that were expected to be the big award contenders were postponed (don't look up, last night in soho, french dispatch, west side story, dune, in the heights, babylon, the batman, candyman, the green knight, the last duel, no time to die, avatar 2, matrix 4, top gun 2, and so on..the next oscars is going to be insane!
I think very few films (2-3) from your list are going to be Oscar-relevant in the important categories.
After 9 months to 2021, I guarantee 2022 is gonna be a tough competition for the Oscar especially for Best Actress
Mwhahahahahaa Mank was a secret contender all along😈
Hi so I'm just wondering where can you bet money for Oscars (and other awards) like you mention at 17:35 ?
always thank you
I just feel sorry for Chadwick's family. Anthony Hopkins although deserving barely cared whether winning or not, instead you can sense the emptiness that people around Chadwick will feel today.
If I were to choose it would have been Riz or Anthony. They were the best performances of the year for me.
@@themtgdude486 yep. Kudos to them for getting it right. I didn't think there was any way in hell Chadwick would lose
I'm sure they're fine, heck they weren't bothered by Hopkins' winning. It's never an obsession for Chadwick to win an Oscar like his brother says. Hopkins did pay tribute to Chadwick which I'm sure his family is proud for that
This year highlight was Actor a best leading role, Super happy Anthony wins.
I am not complaining about Anthony Hopkins and Frances McDormand winning. Although, I am genuinely sad that Carey Mulligan lost, at least, it's Frances. As for Hopkins, I said it all year long ever since Sundance last year. It was objectively THE best male performance of the year and of the decade (okay, maybe the last two decades) and Hopkins is going to get his second Oscar for that performance. I am not going to say more, but there's no robbery, no upset, no nothing and it's so rare that the Academy gets it right in the major categories and they definitely got it right this time. No more arguments, end of the fucking conversation! stop whining people.
Couldn’t agree with all of that more. Anthony Hopkins’ performance was transcendently great. It truly couldn’t be more deserved. I think people are just annoyed that the ceremony structured the categories to milk Boseman’s passing. It was disrespectful.
Yup, Hopkins was unparalleled in this performance. There's no ifs or buts about it.
I still can't find the reasoning behind Mank's win for Cinematography over a BP frontrunner like Nomadland...
Talk about ‘Damn Double Homicide’ for those last two awards of the night!

Wow what a nice surprise. I am more shocked about Frances than Hopkins, I thought they're going to go with Viola Davis (would've been my pick). It's crazy now Frances is a four times Academy Award winner, (3 lead actress is insane)! I mean even Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep only have 2 leading, the only living person tied with her is Daniel Day Lewis, and even Ingrid Bergman also only had two leading. It's fascinating too that two of her wins, Fargo and Nomadland weren't unanimous, her Fargo win was unexpected, she even lost comedy musical GG! (not taking it away from her). I think only Three Billboard she swept. She is officially the new Oscar darling, bye Meryl, especially after snubbed by GG for the Prom, Meryl may not get another nomination, and who knows, maybe Frances will win a 4th acting Oscar before her? I think she will get nominated again for Macbeth, she'll probably at least surpass the 10 nominations mark by the end of her career.
