Have you thought about doing a video on tonal shifts? How a story could start out as a raunchy comedy, but then reveals its way deeper and actually heartfelt.

The characters of "Gentle Criminal" and "La Brava" from My Hero Academia season 4/5 are EXCELLENT anime examples of the "sympathetic villain" trope. Gentle only ever wanted to be a hero, but when his demeanor and intellect proved not up to the task, he changed his M.O., and vowed to become the most notorious criminal in the world. This was PURELY to "be remembered" by people, not for personal financial gain, to the point where he intentionally left the "stolen goods" behind at every crime scene he robbed, rather than taking them to spend himself. The challenge was in committing the crime and succeeding, not in the material rewards of the crime itself.

Probably my favorite archetype of these “in name only” villains are the ones where they actually can be a massive threat if they wanted to. But are bogged down by something, in a kids show it’s normally be the hero of show, but it can be anything like in one my favorite shows “The Venture Bros.” Most villains are kept down by their own emotional issues that they’re projecting by essentially playing dress up though also in that show the villains and even henchmen do actually kill (a lot) and the “heroes” are not really any better if not worse.
I love these types because it normally gives room for the established villain to at some point just be in the living room of their arch nemesis for casual reasons leading to some really hilarious scenarios.

I recently came up with an idea for a villain like this! Picture an intergalactic sci-fi adventure show, where the main baddie is actually just a little kid treating everything like a game. He has all these weapons and a mech suit to make himself look intimidating and evil, but he still has morals that he never breaks (i.e. killing people.) I can easily see what dynamics he may have with other characters, such as having a brother who acts more like a serious villain than he, or the princess and leader of the rebellion being his favorite playmate, someone who understands him more than others and knows deep down, he's just a kid. It's a concept I would love to expand upon if I ever get the chance to run a sci-fi themed tabletop campaign with my friends.

I'm reminded of Garou from One-Punch Man.
He keeps going on about how he's going to become the ultimate evil and an unbeatable monster, but when asked by the Monster Association to kill 100 people, he finds it distasteful and wonders "What does killing people have to do with being an evil?"
We find out that in his childhood he first of all just found monsters cool, and felt it was unfair that they never got to win in Saturday morning cartoons. But he was also unpopular, and always got assigned the "monster" role during hero play, being mistreated by the popular kid. The popular kid was adored while mistreating him, while he got punished and bullied for fighting back. He learned that in this world, heroes are popular and always win even while being jerks, and the monsters always lose, even when just fighting back. So he made it his mission to prove that the monster can win, and beat the unfair heroes.
Despite wanting to become the ultimate evil, he saves a little boy, who reminds him of himself, from being bullied, and later from monsters. When fighting a hero who becomes terrified of him during a fight, he starts to feel like a bully, and all these conflicting goals and emotions cause him an identity crisis.
He eventually finds an answer to what it means to become ultimate evil. He will become an entity so strong and feared, that humanity will forget all their other strives. People so grateful just to be alive, that all differences will be forgotten and meaningless. A world where class doesn't matter, and no little kid will be bullied. "What the world needs isn't biased justice, but absolute unbiased evil!"
Some evil monster he is, saving kids from bullies, fighting the corrupt hero association, and trying to create world peace.

The villain in name alone is honestly pretty much the idea that spawned one of my currently biggest works. Like, the protagonist, Nathaniel, takes up villainy literally as a career path after being laid off, and immediately picks the villain alias "The Demon King of the Underworld". Sure, they somehow managed to make it big in villainy by some journalism and the fact the hero who came to stop his schemes was an up-and-coming hero who is basically the pinnacle of heroism (to the point where he's almost a parody of himself), but her schemes are mostly robbing banks (rent won't pay itself) and performance (helped by their illusion powers). He and Mighty Man sometimes even hang out after battles to make sure one didn't hurt the other too badly.
And then the fun part about such a trope, is when the real antagonist shows up, and you get to subvert expectations there as well because the antagonist, was the most powerful superhero before Mighty Man. And the fun part? His cruelty didn't start when he was overthrown. It just added another person to his off-list.
In essence, what I'm saying is, this is a very good trope and more people should play with it.

I am so glad you made a video on this archetype. I wrote one of these for a small game my friends and I shipped a few years ago, and that experience got me hooked writing up more schemes of his in the years since.
What does a sentient, ice-cooled, super-ultra-high-spec gaming PC do with his free time? Why, he builds an underwater fighting arena (complete with a personal secretary handing out liability waivers at the front desk) to test any budding heroes who would dare stop him from freezing the world's oceans, all while he sits in the final stage of the gauntlet reading light novels, patiently waiting for a final showdown. Instead of fighting you personally of course, he wants a deluge of hench-bots to overwhelm you, but his second-in-command calls to tell him she gambled away all the money in a get-rich-quick scheme, thus, not having any money to keep the hench-bots he designed on payroll. With no other options, he'll fight the hero... "confidently"... and then a single punch to the ice encasing his superconductive components causes him to shatter apart completely.
The best part of these guys aren't even their schemes. It's the sheer confidence that comes with being a ne'er-do-well that masks their squishy personalities. Writing monologues, seeing how they react to a plan that's off-script; it's all about crafting a performance. This video encompasses everything I love about comedic villains!

One of my favorite moments of this in comics involved a story where the Riddler of Batman notoriety getting released from Arkham Asylum to rejoin society. The Riddler didn't particularly want to go back to crime in this instance, but was overwhelmingly bored with mundane life and felt like nobody/nothing was challenging him anymore. Basically, guy missed Batman. He tries to get in touch with Batman through regular, non-criminal means. Batman doesn't have time and is annoyed at the interruption.
But again, the Riddler is extremely bored. So he buys an apartment, stages an elaborate threat with lives at stake. It's all terribly ominous and of course, wrapped in a riddle.
Batman shows up by crashing through the window only to find the Riddler with a nice dinner table set up. He's serving surf and turf in a kiss the genius apron. Lives at steak, you see. The only thing being killed that night is a lobster. And he's ecstatic that Batman solved his puzzle to make it there punctually.
I don't think he technically did anything illegal there--apartment was unoccupied. No one was actually in danger short of delicious crustaceans. Still, good for him lol.

She constantly goes "The ends justify the means", but then she cuts out people's eyes.
Not to mention just utterly sweeping under the rug various unpleasantries. She builds her post-leviathan empire on Coil's money. And she just ignores that this is being built on things like massive amounts of hard drug dealing.

I think you missed one important point: villains who do things in a really evil intention but end up doing good. I'm thinking, for instance, about Kong in Godzilla vs Kong or some dinosaur battles across the Jurassic Park/World series. These monster's role and thoughts mostly revolve about killing/getting rid of humans, but they often end up helping the heroes. If you think they don't enter this category since they aren't really consciously doing those "evil deeds", then consider Jurgen Voller in the new Indiana Jones movies. He helped the Americans go to the Moon after the war, which is already kind of good. His ultimate goal is to make the Germans win World War II thanks to the Dial of Destiny but in doing that he stops a Nazi general from killing Indiana Jones' partner, completes the quest for the artifact (accidentally making them escape a gang of thugs in Maghreb, giving them a boat in Greece, bringing the other half of the Dial...), and ultimately make the timeline fix itself while also allowing Indiana Jones to witness the battle of Syracuse with his own eyes. I think that's part of the reason why the movie has so bad critics, because the villain actually was kind of one of the "worst villains": evil intentions, evil ways, but good results.

Your description of Megamind made me realize something; Joker does the exact same thing in several adaptations when Batman is gone or goes into retirement. In the animated series, when Batman is gone or thought to be dead he actually get's upset at the killer and laments that without Batman to stop him, crime has no punch line. In another animated series, he straight up goes into a catatonic state until Batman comes out of retirement. Of course, Joker is much more of literal evil in terroristic and murderous actions, but is still evil for the sake of being evil and wanting to be feared. Damian Wayne and Superman pretty much point this out to him personally too.

We see is desperate to join the Vees, some of the most influential overlords in hell. We see him angered at Alastor not recognizing him as a threat. He's goofy, eccentric. He straight up exclaims "I'm so evil!" in the pilot of the show. He doesn't want to be evil for power or to commit morally wrong acts, but to just be seen as cool.

One thing that really shows how Duff is a villain in name only is that every time he found a real villain, in the marvel crossover and in the movie, he ended up temporally joining the heroes because the real villains are going to succeed and that's not what he wants. He enjoys doing bad stuff with them for a while but when they start doing really evil things he is usually disgusted.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld do have some of these were they have guilds dedicated to overseeing thieves and assassins and enforcing common practices. The unseen University has a necromancer. Hix. And he's just some guy who "is allowed to act 'evil' and break the rules 'within college statutes'..."

I love when a villain feels obligated to be bad because of their backstory.
Doofensmirtz is a good example, pain made him stronger, but also made him use unhealthy methods to cope with his pain.
Such as wanting control of the Tri-State Area.
I'm Chad Royston and in this essay I will...

Something that gets talked about a little in some of my books I'm working on, in a distant part of the multiverse they take place in, is a specific area of the multiverse ruled over by a god-like entity called The Director. This entity tends to warp real people into melodramatic villains or heroes. One of the escapee heroes mentions they were often forced to listen to villain monologues rather than do something sensible like arrest the villain or break their machines. The same escaped hero also mentions one time one of the villains almost broke the control The Director had over them, expressing that all they really wanted to do was to have their wife and children back, or find someone new to settle down with. He was about to break his own machines when The Director took control again.
I mention this because that's a prime example of a performative villain. Sure, he did actually do a lot of terrible things, but he was basically being forced to do it, since in that sector of the multiverse, heroes and villains both have no free will.

This type of villain is actually pretty old. Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus fits the description pretty well. At the start, he has grand ambitions of ruling the world, but after he makes a deal with the devil, he resorts to pulling childish pranks for money.

My favorite "villain" character is Ainz from Overlord Light Novel/Anime. The story is basically about how an eldritch being and his minions, from the pov of the other characters, starts taking over the world and there's no hero to save the day.
I would really love to read more stories where the villain wins either cos they are smart or that powerful.

Venture Bros had a great example of this. There was literally a union of supervillains called the Guild of Calamitous Intent. The whole thing was treated as a legitimate career path, but the villains often had the potential to be seriously twisted and dangerous. The government plays along because the trappings of "costumed villainy" keeps a bunch of bored, crazy, and powerful people from doing too much real damage.

Random commenter here to say this is surprisingly good! The well animated intro and subversive title drew me in, and the exploration of the twist of that title was perfectly crafted. I'd say the only minor issues I have are the double sponsorship plug and the narrator's voice being a bit too drowsy to keep my full attention.

There's an anime that just aired its first episode with this exact plot
It's (an extremely NSFW) magical girl satire where the MC is a mousey, shy, average girl who is obsessed with magical girls but ends up being drafted into the evil organization they fight against. She ends up on the path of being an actual supervillain but never actually tries to kill or seriously hurt the magical girls, she just loves to see them fighting so hard to protect each other and their town and watching them get stronger
It's hilarious and well done but also has some of the more problematic content notorious w/ ecchi so yeah definitely 18+ and honestly wouldn't be out of place with an H tag. However if you're an adult and have an appreciation for both kink and witty genre satire it's worth a watch (title is Gushing over Magical Girls)

There was an scene in one of the episodes where one of the "Good Guys" says they're not paying one of their workers because they don't technically work there and they're just classified as an intern, and Doofenshmirtz was like "wow... and are we sure I'm the evil one here?"

There's different types of evil I learn.
The "villain as a job" villains and the "does not see themselves as evil" evil.
Dr. Two-Brains treats Villainy as a job, while Miss Power thinks she's a hero when she's a mean, antagonistic force.
I love that you used Doof as an example- and he's an Antithesis to Emperor Belos. Doof feels he "has" to be evil based on his backstories, when it becomes his casual job, while Belos feels he "must" be the hero because he sees his twisted ideas as "the right way to live".

Gru, Doofenshmirtz and Megamind are my favorite villains ever and hearing about them from this video is amazing. I mean it’s true that all 3 are villains, but to be honest they’re more like misunderstood characters. Heck, like how Doofenshmirtz was explained before, he only wants to rule the Tri State area, but for good reasons because of his troubled past as a child, but even so he never wanted to take over the world like how one villain did. (Basically the one who I think Doofenshmirtz took under his wing, but it’s not Buford) But anyway, thanks for explaining to us what villains really are.

I think one of those unofficially bad villain I can think of is Spamton. He's interesting because he is villain-coded as soon as you encounter him, but if you pay attention, you notice that the protagonist (Kris) probably doesn't consider him to be one.
I think him being completely pathetic and a failure in every way makes him a fun villain, but on top of that, he also subverts expectations because if you take the time to decipher his story, he's just a guy who ended up learning he doesn't even control his own destiny, mind or body and wants those freedom. Most of us aren't in control of our own destiny thanks to unchecked capitalism, and some of us aren't in control of our mind or/and body either due to disabilities. That makes him a very loveable and sympathetic villain.

I think Killer Moth from DC Comics is a great example of this archetype. He is a supervillain in Gotham City who has a protection racket for criminals, so whenever they need his help they shine the "Moth-Signal" in the sky and he comes to their rescue, and he gets a cut of their loot in return. However, he's often very clumsy and incompetent which leads to most of his plans failing. Because of this, most people see him as a joke, and it doesn’t help that his costume is very colorful and goofy-looking. His reasons for becoming a villain are simply because he thought it would cool. It's very clear that he isn't at all evil, just a dork in a costume.
