Personally, I haven’t required a laptop for demanding tasks and since I don’t have a laptop 🧑🏻💻, my M4 iPad Pro 13-inch has been more than sufficient. I frequently use the cameras, so it’s been a great choice. I had the M1 model since its release and replaced it solely because of the 126GB storage capacity. @ Hi David, always great to hear from you. And yeah, so far my M4iPad Pro has been working great for the level of work related things I’m using it for and I definitely love it, but at the beginning I thought I was making a huge mistake, cause I was spending rather much money into this set up, but so far no regrets thank God. You on the other hand, definitely need a laptop to compensate for the demanding work you do, so I understand what you mean. My favorite is the iPad Mini and I love it, but I do miss the OLED of the Pro. WOW, I just checked the pricing on the 11”. Starts at $999! That’s insane. Yeah I’ll forgo the OLED and stick with the mini.
@ agreed. I had the 11” and absolutely loved that screen, but the form factor of the mini quickly won me over. That screen is no slouch either, but it ain’t OLED for sure.
Once again a really nice summary of the real world utility of the M4 iPad Pro. Thanks! I have both the 11 inch and the 13 inch model and I find myself using them very differently. The 13 inch really seems to need the Magic Keyboard, in part because of how large it is; it really is almost too big to use routinely as a tablet, even if it IS a lot lighter than the 12.9 inch 2018 IPP it replaces. It's closer to being a laptop substitute that can, in a pinch, be used as a tablet but is a tad too large and cumbersome for that use on a regular basis. The 11 inch model OTOH seems ideally suited to use as a tablet, almost an iPad mini Pro, and as such it doesn’t seem to need a keyboard as much. It's ideal for reading ebooks, taking handwritten notes, and consuming media on the go. You mentioned in passing the fact that AAPL really needs to improve the functionality of the Files app. I couldn’t agree more. I don’t want my iPad to be a Mac but I DO want to be able to easily find and organize the files on my iPad. The biggest impediment to using an iPad for real work is the unintuitive file management on the iPad. I shouldn’t have to THINK about where a file is hiding, it should be intuitively obvious where to find it.
hi there - it's lovely to hear from you again. The next time I'm in an Apple store, I'm going to spend some time holding the 11-inch iPad to get a better idea of what it's like to hold. Yeah, if we could have some kind of folder/ file management system, it would help life with an iPad so much!
The M4 iPad Pro is too rich for my blood, but I took advantage of the announcement of the M4 Pro and the M2 Air and bought the M1 iPad Air as soon as it went on sale. So I guess you could say I'm a fan of the Pro in an oblique sort of way.
Buddy, as an artist, I've been complaining about Apple Pencil not working on iphone for atleast 4 years now. I keep saying it's going to be the one thing I would impulse buy a new model for. If all the iPhone 17 had next year was Pencil support, I would buy one on the spot. I would love for the day I can just jot down quick doodles on my phone, know my doogle will be saved to the cloud, and then when I get home I can pull it up on the iPad and polish it off.
@@christianr.5868 Kinda, lol. You're mostly right. But it doesn't fit the same niche I would want it to. For me, it would be about having a drawing device in my pocket at all times (like my phone). If I had to go out of my way to carry an iPad mini, then I could just bring an 11 Pro. It's kinda like the same camera debate. They say the best camera is the one you have with you. But not a lot of people want to carry around a whole other camera, even if it fits iny our pocket. It's basically either built into your phone, or it's as big as will fit in your carry bag. I just want it to be with me at all times without needing a bag.
I've waited very long for the M4Pro since I needed and wanted to upgrade my 2017 iPad Pro (which had a broken Display and weak Battery). Was looking forward to that sweet USB-C and wanted the M cpu to be able to plug an external display into it. The Magic Keyboard, is what also makes it for me. However I'm a bit disappointed by the battery runtime. Since it's supposed to be a Pro Device, I'm not interested in having a slimmer device, but rather having significantly longer battery runtimes. From a software point, I wish there would be an easy (easier) way to remote into my Mac Mini for some Mac Software. Apart from that, it's an awesome device. One thing I come back to is iDos to play some old DOS games like Command and Conquer
Yeah, the battery life is decent, but I guess had they made it a bit thicker, possibly, we could have squeezed a bit of a larger battery into it. The remote issue you make is also a good point
I ended up going for the 11” instead of the 13” once I went to the store and held both. I don’t regret it at all, it the perfect tablet size. If I planned to keep it in a Magic Keyboard then the 13 would make more sense but using likes tablet is much nicer on the 11
@@ryanblohm7411 Yup…since making this video, I am trying to use mine more out of the case. It’s such a gorgeous tablet to hold! If I was using it mobile more often, I’d definitely go for the smaller version
I have literally just bought an Ipad Pro M4 over the Black Friday sales. Not used it much at the moment but completely agree that if you don’t need a keyboard you dont need the pro. Apple pencil I came to the conclusion I just wouldn’t use it. My handwriting is terrible and I don’t do any sketching so not worth the money. I also had the Dilemma you spoke about with the 13 being a bit big for travel but what made me get this over the 11 was the keyboard size difference. The 11” keyboard just felt a bit too compact for me and this was what made me pick the 13 over the 11.
Congratulation! I hope you start to really enjoy using it. Yeah, I think for a meaningful typing experience, you need the 13-inch iPad. Damn, isn't it lovely to type on!!
Watching this on my iPad Pro 11’’ 2018. It still an amazing device and a key point for my productivity. My best Apple investment for sure. And so convenient for web browsing, watching movies… I’ve looked to upgrade to M4, just because of the screen, because besides that, the Air would be way enough for my use. But with cellular, having to get a new pencil, case, etc, I can’t justify putting that much, while my iPad Pro still serves me well and would have a ridiculous value in trade inn
Until this summer, I had no idea what I was missing out on by not having an iPad Pro - but now I am converted and hooked on it! Everyone raves about that 2018 model!
I agree on the 13 inch being a bit cumbersome, David. I’m getting an 11 inch M4 iPad Pro for work and I’ll let you know what it’s like day to day - I am getting more used to my 13” now I’m six months into ownership, but I also know I tend to grab my mini when I need to do quick things, whereas the 13 is constantly in the Magic Keyboard. It’ll be interesting to see how the 11 is as the last 11 inch Pro I had was with a third party Brydge keyboard (on my 2018) so I’ll be interested to see how the 11 inch Magic Keyboard stacks up to my touch typing…!
Hi Matt - there is a tiny part of me that regrets not getting the 11-inch, but this large display is just stunning! All I can say is that there must be a lot of stuff in there if it's this heavy! Let me know what you make of the 11-inch 🙏🏼
@ I will do, sir 😊 I used to have the 2018 11 inch so I have some idea. Just got my new external display for my iPad too which is nice albeit I'm not sure 4k displays scale as nicely as the Studio Display which is a bit annoying...

With the M5 IPad Pro rumored to be released late 2025/ Early 2026. Do we think that Apple will make the Bezels and margins even slimmer. Or one better could they make the viewing screen for HDR content larger. I’d love to see either as I really want a tablet where I can use the whole screen as viewing area.
Know what you mean about using an iPad all day. Mine gets coffee, coke and whatever dropped on it every day. I am considering the iPad Pro M4 to go along with my 9th and 10th generation iPads. I use my microfiber cloth and eye glass cleaner on the screens of my iPads when they need it, usually after cleaning my glasses. I do not like Mac OS, never have because it pales against the Windows OS. I grew old with DOS, Windows and Microsoft compilers and always refused to port my programs over to the MAC. I am a retired Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP). I have moved over to IOS on my iPads in the last few years and like it, but not MAC OS. After I got my iPad my Toshiba laptop hasn’t even been turned on. I am going to buy a IPad Pro 13” M4 in the next week or so. The thing that most folks don’t know about iPads is how you can dictate messages, emails and the like on an iPad. Siri is smarter and faster than me with a stylus or my fingers.
I think my biggest conclusion over this year messing with tech is that I'm gonna stop trying to find a use for the Macbook Pro, and instead just going to focus on my PC, ipad, and iPhone. The Macbook just doesn't have a place in my setup. And if I had to choose between the Macbook and the iPad, the answer is stupidly obvious to me. I draw, so iPad is needed. Nothing the Macbook provides that I can't do on my computer with its 4090 hardware. I think what throws me off about the iPad (and what throws a lot of people off) is the whispers of potential. I didn't need an iPad to do M4 things. And I don't really need a laptop to do M4 things, but with all the hype around it, it sure seems important to find something to do with it. But really, I'm not doing anything with it. And I'd like to think after 10 years of travel, I'd realize that I never game on my laptop even when I do bring it. So I don't need a gaming device. I'm always too busy enjoying my trips to set up a laptop and game, lol.
fusion of ipad pro and macbook air would be a total game changer. but 13" is the sweetspot of formfactor for most of the users, 11 could often be to small
@@DavidLewisTech put it up next to a MBP16 and the MBP16 is way better. Not to mention being able to use apps to increase the brightness of the XDR display on MBP.
But if you don’t need content creation u just need a iPad to stream movies and need 120 hz and do web browsing , read email, using intelligence and take notes, which iPad should I use? I currently have the a12z iPad Pro from 2020 but the Face ID is broken …is it worth for me to upgrade to the m4? Or shall I go for the more portable mini7?
I find iPadOS the limitation to being able to do serious work, especially because the file management is abysmal. My iPad Pro M1 is basically an external monitor, and device I travel with to watch content on the plane.
Hi David, I recently bought the mini 7 based on your recent video. The line that sold me was that you find yourself reaching for the iPad mini the most. But now with this 13” pro video, it may be necessary for me to have both. I’m not completely sold on the 13” yet, but perhaps if you told me what your most frequent use case(s) are for the 13”, it might be helpful. Thanks.
Hi there - if it helps you any, I still reach for the mini more often, but if I decide I want to crash and watch a movie or something on Apple TV, I will go for the iPad Pro. The display is just unbeatable! Great to hear from you. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙏🏼
@ I agree, I’m glad I have an M1 iPad Pro. For my needs the 13” iPad Air meets my needs so I don’t think I’m going with another Pro when I have to upgrade next.
I have the 11 inch iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, and its pretty nice to me if it had Mac OS or if iPad OS had better multi-tasking and external app support it could have been apples version of the surface pro but better lol. The magic keyboard is a better keyboard than anything Microsoft has to offer for the surface pro.
My go-to apps are essentially Apple: Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Mail, Safari. I also use FaceBook, UA-cam, and MS-Teams. I really wish I could use WhatsApp natively or through Safari or some other browser. No Chrome and FireFox do NOT work. Yes, It’s a 13” M4 iPad Pro with Nano-texture, 1TB.
@ I use other apps as well including Final Cut Pro, etc I took “go to” as meaning “everyday absolutely essential. When on a sailboat there are many more apps running real time that are related to sailing but I’m not on a sailboat everyday. I use FreeForm almost everyday, I just didn’t include it as it’s not “everyday” on the M4 iPad Pro. If is everyday on my iPad Mini 7th gen and my iPhone 15 Pro Max: just FYI.
Be warned the M4 11-inch iPad Pro has worse speakers than the M2 version. I traded up to the M4 a couple months ago and it’s my only disappointment. Voices sound muddier and muffled, but music is still very good.
Got my 11 inch m4 day one. It was fun for some time. But definitely not worth the $1600 Canadian. It's just ios on a bigger screen with a processor that's full potential will never be used. I really regret not spending the extra $100 getting a mac book air with 16gb of ram.
11" and 13" is tricky. Split screen works on both, but split screen is a lot easier to use productively on the larger screen. But 13" iPad with keyboard is same weight and size as Macbook Air, and for my work it's less useful than a Macbook. I would not consider carrying both, so I'm wedded to the 11" size, without keyboard, and it's a companion device to the macbook. I can use the macbook keyboard and trackpad with the iPad. I want iPadOS to improve, hugely. Mutiltasking on the iPad is fiddly at best. I don't enjoy split screen being locked at 50/50 or 25/75. Why can't I have 60/40, or any other split? Multi tasking implies genuine background processing, and this is something iPad just doesn't do properly. I don't want to leave Netflix in the foreground just to download some content. Or iPlayer. Or the Files app. Given the OS limitations as I see them, I can't recommend the M4 for the money, despite it being a fantastic bit of hardware. I use an 11" M1 iPad Pro, which you can pick up for $500, and functionally, it does everything I can do on the M4 iPad. It's still a great option, the price of a mini, but better in almost every way.
An M1 iPad Pro for $500 is a bargain! Using the iPad as a companion to the MacBook is also a top tip. My biggest bug-bear is the files app as it's so important in iPadOS
So apparently the 11 inch ipad and the 13 inch one have DIFFERENT aspect ratios, and I had no idea about this until this morning. What's up with that? Why does literally no one talk about it.
@@DavidLewisTech It's cool. I had absolutely no idea until watching another person basically hint at it, but never fully explain it. The crazy part is that I've been using a 13 inch since 2020 and I just literally never knew there was a different aspect ratio. But I could EASILY tell there was a different ratio between an iPad and a Macbook, but I think was given, lol
I always give myself the luxury of not putting films on my Apple equipment. I will never exchange a technology for any material. Oh! I loved your videos, go ahead.
On the Mac, you can marry your phone so the Mac I dragged drop whatever you want. Unfortunately you cannot use the cameras on the phone while connected for some reason..
iPhone Mirroring is brilliant, and I use it a lot. Not only can't you use the cameras, but the banking apps don't work either. But, on the whole, it's a brilliant app!
iPad os is better than Mac which is a mess. It’s just missing the full desktop software for productivity. But the iPad apps add a lot that the Mac doesn’t have.
I use both the iPad and MBP, and they are both great devices. The iPad is my daily work device. I have the 11" and it's the perfect size when I'm in my day office (front seat of a RAM pickup) or air traveling. Actually love both multitasking functions. They both fit different needs in different situations. I hope MacOS never comes to the iPad. It doesn't need it.
@@DavidLewisTech I mostly use it in meetings where I need to go between apps quickly and rabidly access information or take a quick note. I work a convention once a year and it's $$$$ in that situation.
Why not have macOS on ipad? It would be a game changer. They’re not doing it because it doesn’t make sense they just don’t want to cannibalize MBP lineup. Because most people will buy ipad instead. Id like to run my logic pro in full capacity and be able to use keyboard as midi note input source. Currently these simple intuitive features aren’t available on ipadOS. Don’t even get me started on way simpler things like having fullscreen on youtube app..
I suggest some caution when purchasing these iPad Pros because they have OLED screens, and in a few years, we might see many users complaining about burn-in.
the iPhones have OLED too, and most people haven't noticed. While it's a valid concern for sure, I think most people who buy OLED know what they're getting into
Nice but seriously overpriced. Multitasking could be far better even without Mac OS as Samsung Dex & is still android not windows. Future proof without question but for what I use it for so would just about any tablet for me. If I went for a Galaxy tab ultra with launch specials the savings are massive , only apps look better on iPad is the saving grace.
Yeah, I have seen the S10 Tab, and it is a cool-looking tablet, but there is something that draws me to the iPad. I understand it is not for everyone, but I love it!
@@DavidLewisTech I have an M2 MacBook Air 13 for my main computer use, so I mainly use my M4 iPad Pro 11 inch as a tablet for content consumption, mainly UA-cam and internet browsing.
I had a Mac Mini and a MacBook Pro and just switched out the MacBook Pro for the iPad Pro m4 w/cellular.
Good shout - I'm going to be working from my iPad Pro mostly today as well!
This the best hardware Apple has ever made
That or the Mac mini - I agree with you!
The M4 iPad Pro is too rich for my blood, but I took advantage of the announcement of the M4 Pro and the M2 Air and bought the M1 iPad Air as soon as it went on sale. So I guess you could say I'm a fan of the Pro in an oblique sort of way.
That's a great story! 👍🏼
Yup, I'd rather have that added than the rumours of the iPhone Air! Using the Pencil on the phone seems so obvious doesn't it!
I’d say the iPad mini is the perfect alternative to that. Small but has pen and pro app support
@@nauscakes1868 it’s either that or an android device unfortunately. Although I think there’s some active Bluetooth pens for the iPhone
I currently have a m2 iPad Pro looking forward to upgrading to the m4 . I need more storage and I want. That gorgeous OLED.
Once you've used this OLED display, there is sadly no going back!
Your voice is great. It sounds like I’m hearing a review from the GEICO gekko. 🙂
Ha ha! Cheers man - I'll take that one all day long! 👊🏼
Agreed on the screen, just got a studio display and was disappointed. Yes, I know OLED is inherently better.
I mean, I am a MASSIVE fan of the Studio Display, but even that looks shabby compared to the Tandem OLED panel on the iPad 👌🏼
Magic. The iPad is just magic. Whenever you pick it up you notice. But I’ve been alive long enough to remember a time before even the internet.
...ha! You and me both!!
And so convenient for web browsing, watching movies…
I’ve looked to upgrade to M4, just because of the screen, because besides that, the Air would be way enough for my use.
Great video buddy and I love my 11 inch M4 pro
cheers fella! These displays are something else, right?
Had to return mine in June because of the poor audio quality of the speakers. Waiting for the M5 in the Autumn.
Oh no!! You are not the first person to mention that issue!

Great info - love the dictating part...so often overlooked
Enjoying life!! That's what it should all be about!✌🏼

fusion of ipad pro and macbook air would be a total game changer.
but 13" is the sweetspot of formfactor for most of the users, 11 could often be to small
Yeah, I think on balance, I am happy with my decision...it is just a heavy beast to carry all day. But boy, what a brilliant iPad it is!
I wish there was a way to increase the display contrast.
The display is so good, I’ve never given it a second thought to be honest!

True, but for your use purposes, I don’t know if it would be all that noticeable
@@DavidLewisTech also I have a MacBook Air m1, so is there a need for me to use iPad?
I find iPadOS the limitation to being able to do serious work, especially because the file management is abysmal. My iPad Pro M1 is basically an external monitor, and device I travel with to watch content on the plane.
Sidecar on here is brilliant isn't it!
iPad OS is the best of both worlds a great blendof iOS and macOS
yup - no arguments from me on that score
Even the M1 iPad Pro is a very powerful machine by 2024 standards.
Yup - very true, but I do think the iPad, with Apple silicon is finally about to shine!
@ I agree, I’m glad I have an M1 iPad Pro. For my needs the 13” iPad Air meets my needs so I don’t think I’m going with another Pro when I have to upgrade next.
Did you do something in setting display?

I have the 11 inch iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, and its pretty nice to me if it had Mac OS or if iPad OS had better multi-tasking and external app support it could have been apples version of the surface pro but better lol. The magic keyboard is a better keyboard than anything Microsoft has to offer for the surface pro.
hi y a- yeah, that Magic Keyboard is something else, right?
This version in video it's nano texter?
Nope. I showed the original model I had (and one in store too) as a reference, but my iPad does not have nano texture

I really regret not spending the extra $100 getting a mac book air with 16gb of ram.
there is certainly an overlap between the MBA and iPad. I do think Apple silicon will make the iPad, though...
Damn! I wish I had picked up on that!! I spent ages researching this video and missed that point!! Thanks for highlighting it
@@DavidLewisTech It's cool. I had absolutely no idea until watching another person basically hint at it, but never fully explain it.
