Had people talk about old 2 stroke Detroit diesels running in reverse. Now, they could be rebuilt to run in reverse properly, but in the wrong circumstance, they could stall and run backwards. Quite the mess with an oil bath air cleaner. 4 stroke diesels can also be gotten to run backwards depending on the fuel system. Shutting off a deere 2 cylinder diesel, you could get them to pop off backwards for a bit when shutting down if you timed it just right turning the fuel back on. But, all these examples, you don't want to do this for more than a few seconds since the oil pump would not be providing lube.

The legendary German Messerschmitt "Kabinenroller" also used a reversable two stroke engine. It's very cool if you take someone for a ride who don't know that. Nobody believes it, until you show it off. You have to stop, shut the engine off, start it in reverse (it has a dynastarter) and then you can go in reverse. In all four gears, that is... Theoretically you can go a suicidal 65 mph in reverse with those things.

Reminds me of that old lanz bulldog 2 stroke single 10.3L tractor .. it maxes out at 631 RPMs.. and idles at 0 RPMs ! ... reverse is achieved by putting it at idle and jerking the clutch which kicks the governor on and makes the motor actually rev up just enough to start turning RPMs sometimes you have to give her a few clutch pops as it bounces in between backwards and forward rotation depending on which direction you want her to go ! .... I had an old Honda Odyssey FL250 it had a tendency to want to start in reverse all the time ...and it ran just fine only backwards .. I let someone else drive it and they ran it off into a long steep ravine out in the middle of nowhere with no way to turn it around and with the machine not actually equipped with reverse I give the motor a few cranks and shut it off until it went into reverse then we backed that sucker out !

Fun as always! When I was a kid, it was common for my glow plug, methanol 2 cycle model plane engines to start backwards. On occasion, they would "burp" and start running forward afterwards. I have also seen glow plug 4 stroke model plane engines run backwards when fuel was puddled in the muffkin. The 6:1 ratio that methanol burns at makes fuel mixture less critical and the air going over the fuel in the muffkin would pick up enough vapor to keep the engine running backwards.

My brother and I both had KDX200 2 stroke enduro bikes back in the day. I wanted more low end torque, so I bought a flywheel weight for mine. It was a big improvement, but I wanted even more grunt, so I advanced the timing 5 degrees and it really pulled hard down low. My brother didn't put a weight on his flywheel but did advance his timing the same 5 degrees. My motor outpulled his, since it had a heavier flywheel, but being young and dumb, he said "if 5 degrees is good, then 10 degrees must be GREAT" and made the adjustment, against my advice. His first kick kicked back HARD and almost sent him over the bars. Did that stop him? NOPE! Kick HARDER, he says to himself, and that's what he did. It almost broke his leg, it kicked back so hard, but it cranked. It sounded really weird, though, like an outboard motor exhaust running under water. He revved her up, getting ready to show me who's the boss, dumped the clutch, and took off hauling a$$ BACKWARDS. He crashed withing 10 feet, of course!! Funniest thing I ever saw!!

It fired up but it was running rough , I was setting the timing “ by ear” didn’t own a timing light. As I was backing the timing back to TDC I went too far, the engine sort of backfired and to my amazement it started to run backwards ! I freaked out, fortunately the air filter housings weren’t on yet; I cupped my palms over the throat of the two carbs and starved the engine. After I calmed down I eyeballed the distributor to well past TDC and it started right up, no apparent ill effects!

If you let go of the starter knob in just the right (or, of course, wrong...) moment they puff away in reverse. The problem is, they destroy the injection pump while doing that. The old Mercury outboard systems were called direct reversing and they reversed the engine to obtain reverse thrust. The distributor would rotate and at the same time kill the engine for a pulse between running in forward and going into reverse

I remember those engines when they were new, alot of people crashed into the dock because it wouldn’t start in reverse rotation, that concept didn’t last very long, now they’re collector motors. I know where there’s many in the bottom of the river.

Four strokes can actually run in reverse as well. Some aircraft engines are available as reverse rotation engines, and the only major differences is the oil pump, camshaft and ignition timing. When I worked at Caterpillar, they had an issue with motor grader with a 3306 engine that ran backwards. If you loaded up the engine enough to stall it, it could fire a cylinder before top dead center and spin itself backwards, and once it was spinning the wrong direction it would run very badly in the wrong direction intaking through the exhaust and exhausting through the intake. Odd seeing the machine rolling backwards in a forward gear. Totaled the engine in a pretty big hurry because oil was being pumped out of the engine and into the oil pan. Some ship engines are reversible because it costs less and weighs less to make the engine reversible than it does to build to in a reversible gear box.

I believe Polaris snowmobiles still do this today. To go in reverse hold button on dash until engine slows to a stop and runs backwards. Then to go forward, same process. From the Polaris web site: How does Polaris electronic reverse work?
How Does Electronic Reverse Work? The electronic reverse is much easier than the mechanical reverse. With just a press of the button, the engine slows down to a near stop, then slowly starts up again to begins rotating backward to reverse. There is also another electronic reverse version called the PERC.

About a century ago there was a railcar manufacturer of McKeen . In order to go in reverse they had you stop the engine and you would do some kind of adjustment to the cams. They didn't use an electric starter but used stored air pressure to start. Problem was if it didn't start quickly you would run out of air then came out the manual crank.

I do know on the old B-52 G model bombers with the old J-57 engines would at times rotate backwards and start. Granted it would grenade the engine but it would run for a few seconds.

I used to fly an older Cessna 172 with a heavy three blade prop. When you shut the engine down at idle it would kick over and run backwards.
Only way to prevent it was to throttle up as you shut down to give it some momentum in the forward direction.

Hey Taryl, so now that the flywheel is spinning backwards, from the direction of the cooling fins on the flywheel, it won't push the air up through the blower shroud, and push the Hot air out and away through the cooling fins on the head, So won't that eventually cause the engine to overheat and blow up🤔?

I was working on a farm in Germany in the 90s and we had an old tractor, I believe it was a Hanomag, with a 2 stroke Diesel. sometimes it would start the wrong way by accident kickback. you could put it in reverse and then drive forward but it would blow a lot of smoke!

I once toured a WWII era tug boat that had a diesel engine with direct drive to the prop shaft. To put it in reverse, you had to shut the engine down and shift the cam shaft, then start the engine in reverse. I had to scratch my head at whoever thought that would work better than just putting a gearbox between the engine and prop shaft. Kinda makes you rethink your definition of "military technology."

of unburned fuel vapor etc.) & over heated. Shut it off...It dieseled a couple seconds, then stopped and started running backward.
Volcanoed smoke and flame out the carb. It ran for several seconds as we flailed around. It stopped. Fun, Fun On the Autoban.

Starter was spinning in the wrong direction. Exhaust out the Air filter and intake threw the exhaust. New starter fix the problem.

Modern 2 stroke snowmobile engines run in reverse so they can have reverse without adding weight by having a reverse chain case. They run forward and when reverse button is engaged the motor slows down then stops for split second and reverses itself!!

GM/Detroit 2-cyclediesels were made to run either direction but only one, not both. By pal had an OLD Bultaco Matador dirt bike that'd change directions while idling. It'd sort of PIFFLE and it'd be running in reverse. You try and take off and you'd be backing up BUT it'd only do it at a slow idle.
