As someone who plays a lot of CCM (I play for a small church choir and generally handle the more modern stuff), I can tell you that this is basically how they do accompaniments, with a few things they tend to add such as melodic riffs on top. However, when I go out and listen to contemporary pop music from more mainstream sources, I hear basically the same stuff. Accompaniment is basically background music for the vocalist, and it's played like background music.

Luckily, my church is very relaxed and loves it when we add little solos and fills between verses or bridges so I can spice it up a little bit

I've not done as much with the sus chord, but I've been trying to get my students to "play around" with the 1-4-5 like this to work on playing by ear. Maybe if I call it "wasting time" they'd be more interested in trying it! LOL! Thanks so much for this!

Many years ago, I was messing around at the piano in the student lounge at college and someone came up to me and told me there was gonna be a memorial service for a student who had passed away and asked if I'd like to play some music for it. Now, I didn't know the student and definitely didn't think about what I would play songwise. She said just some light background stuff is all they were looking for beforehand and after.
I agreed. I used these exact techniques and everyone came up to me afterward and told me it was perfect and very beautiful. They were so grateful. I was told that the girl who had passed played much in the same way.
The girl who asked me to play even paid me for the time. I reluctantly accepted after refusing repeatedly!!
