  • In this episode I attend a call out to a property in Finsbury Park. The owner says that that three Vent Axia extractor fans installed in different bathrooms have stopped working.
    As standard with these types of jobs I establish if power is going to the fan first in an attempt to determine whether the the issue is with the fan or not. Have a watch and share your thoughts on this job.

      Probably could've also test if power is going to the motor from that big chunk of pcb. That has a dozen parts that can fail more easily than a simple electric motor.

    4” fans the Bain of my life, I’ve installed cheap and expensive ones..they just don’t last very long, I tend to stick the turbine looking ones in the loft if I can get away with it.

    I've had a few of these fail on the low speed setting, change them to full speed fixes it, suspect a failure on the dropper resistor, but didn't check. I've only had one bearing fail so far, despite some running pretty much 24/7

    I got called out last week to a new build, the homeowner was getting belts off their oven, who ever installed the electric didn’t think they needed a CPC for the hob so just chopped it off, was getting 180v on the metallic surface of the oven to the earth of the kitchen ring main.

      Got a shock off my sister's Lamona glass induction hob. Spilt a bit of liquid next to it on the laminate worktop and wiped it with my wet hand, and accidentally touched the metal cooker door below with my other hand. Measured up to 122v.
      I think it was helped by a mass of breadcrumbs underneath the sticky sided glass edge. With the DVM just on the dried wooden top half a foot away, it also measured 2v with the insulated probes held in the air until switched off.
      Told her to get a spark in and she said "It was fine when I was using it!".

    Most of these fans require a 3a fuse to protect the internals, they mostly state this in the manufactures instructions. I usually install the click range, 3 pole fan isolator with a fuse carrier.

    Asif Iqbal, I believe YOUR comment has finally solved the mystery of why the top fan was so dirty. Some of the air from the fans on the lower apartments had 'always' been exiting through the top-floor fan via the common duct, an ongoing problem (not a pleasant thought).
    Presumably some of air in the rising common duct chose the lower resistance path of the top-floor fan rather than moving through the ducting to the exit via the outside wall. My own original wrong thought was the very very unlikely chance that the fan had been running in reverse, thanks for your insight.

  • @Elvis_TheKing

    Nice one Delroy! That is a mystery regarding those fans. Surely they wouldn’t burn out prematurely simply because the ducting was long? 🤷🏻‍♂️
    I suspect that, like many things nowadays, they are only designed to last just beyond the warranty period.
    I tend to choose Xpelair, although even I have to admit that they are simply not built to the standards they once were. Take the GCX6, for instance. That model can trace its roots back to the 1950s; you still see loads of old style ones in full operation, whereas the new model is just flimsy and built down to a cost.
    Keep the videos coming Delroy! Best sparky on UA-cam 👊🏼 Take good care mate.

    No ones mentioned the IP rating, IP44 when the fan stops there would be a mass amount of moisture on the PCB and within days it will fry, the PCB looks too exposed (china). get one with a better IP rating which would have PCB coating, which that clearly doesn’t.

      Fans should be regularly vacuumed but that never happens....
      You would normally find in bathrooms the air and dust and water creates damp dust that gets attached to the fan over time and clogs, causing it to work harder and induce wear and tear at a rate quicker than normal... only a good quality fan could last longer... combination of mass production and less quality control is the cause.

  • @bobbypops6124
    @bobbypops6124 2 роки тому +2

    I’ve fitted hundreds of these, not a bad fan but there’s far better ones on the market. Fitting fans in a ceiling is always best to avoid as a lot of sparks don’t use the correct ducting and duct it too far to have any effect. I’ve got a garage full of theses things where moistures dripped back in to the fan and fryed it. Not the best design. I’d. always core drill out or if not possible use a in line centrifugal fan with insulated ducting.

      axia-vent specifies these fans in its own data sheets as B and C goods as well as a maximum working time of 2 hours, which means if you forget to turn it off, the fans are quickly scrapped.

  • @Swwils
    @Swwils 3 роки тому +2

    Probably on too small duct or too long run (or both) and the static pressure is too high - making the fans ineffective and shortening the electronics lifetime.

    • @darkbreed
      @darkbreed 2 роки тому

      Never. note it is a fan and not a turbine. There is no physical possibility of building up a pressure in the exhaust air line that would lead to a force feedback. Since this fan is not subject to any measurably higher mechanical stress when the back pressure is too high to build up an air flow, a load-related shortening of the lifespan of the electrical components is excluded. Furthermore, axia-vent specifies these fans in its own data sheets as B and C goods as well as a maximum working time of 2 hours, which means if you forget to turn it off, the fans are quickly scrapped.

    These Vent Axia silent fans are very unreliable. I have three in my house and have had to change all of them within two years of installation. All three vent directly out of an outside wall so they are not working hard to shift the air down a long pipe. I love the silent fan, I don't want it to sound as if I have a 747 taking off in the bathroom in the middle of the night, but this brand has proved consistently unreliable. Otherwise the waste from poorly made products is every increasing and is not sustainable.

    Not surprised they`ve died with that amout of crap in them, Vent Axia used to do a similar looking one with an upfront dust catcher slide out mesh filter. The new "woke" low power motors don`t help to clear the dust up the pipe and just stall with a small build up of dirt.
