I am in SA. our regulations here require every earth termination with 2 or more earths need to be crimped to gather then terminated in box/switch/plug. If you lose a live, or neutral, your equipment will not work. Then requiring back checking to locate a fault. Loosing an earth, never, with great consequences can cause electric shock.
I just wired my house in Ontario Canada, as a home owner you can do your own work and get it inspected by ESA. It's pretty extreme in terms of requirements and learning. All circuits must be AFCI protected from the breaker panel, which means AFCI breakers, which run around $100 each. I used 15 of them lol. AFCI = arc fault circuit interrupter.

journeyman electrician from Canada here thats considering a move to the UK and I got to say for some stuff UK is way above us for safety like Meggering all the lines and having fuses on alot of equipment but then you got other stuff like putting fixture wire through a ceiling to join in somewhere else that isnt really accessible. Its kind of mind boggling to me. I do however love how you sparks get to really take your time to diagnose and wire because here in houses (commercial builds is a bit different) its get in and get out as quick as humanly possible and many companies will try to get away with shoddy work to be the lowest bidder and there are SO many of us sparks so its difficult to keep busy. Still considering a move over to the UK midlands where I have family but dont know if any of my years of experience would even be considered.
@@jurassicsparks5220 I suspected so. Ive seen some other videos form Delroy along with others showing some other stuff that I found strange but probably not the norm like; Steel enclosures outside, Twin & earth outside, Panels at any height (from right at the floor to right at the ceiling), burying a junction box in ceiling or floor and spurring/extending a plug from a kitchen circuit. Are any of these allowable practices or just people leaving the work they find there? Is that ok, to just leave the work and make a note about it? Like if I open a permit on a house here my work is inspected by a city inspector and they can inspect the entire house for code violations that they can then tell the homeowner they need fixed. Come to think of it, I dont think i've ever heard of a inspector in the UK like we have here.
Great video, had a similar thing going on in the new house I bought. I removed all of the extra surface sockets and everything worked properly. Lights are still an issue but at least they work.
My parents had a new house built. I inspected the caballing and it was worse than you have shown. Although the building inspectors passed it a safe, they never actually checked it because it was wired by a well known reputable builder.

I am in SA. our regulations here require every earth termination with 2 or more earths need to be crimped to gather then terminated in box/switch/plug. If you lose a live, or neutral, your equipment will not work. Then requiring back checking to locate a fault. Loosing an earth, never, with great consequences can cause electric shock.
LMAO - those lights in the kitchen. When he said it didn’t look nice. It looks shit. This mans a DIYer for sure.
Wtf how do these people get away with it?. That was not installed by a qualified electrician no way, Well done Delroy it's a good job there's proper sparks out there to put things right. Like you mate. Fantastic video
Thanks for the kind words
Wtf, deffo a DIY installation.
I love the position of the smoke alarm, maybe next time, put it in the consumer unit.
Well said Delroy there are some serious Cowboys 🤠 out there
Thank for the comment, hope you enjoyed the video
Quality diy workmanship 🤦♂️ 15 mins in ya video my mind was made up rewire 👍🏻
im an Apprentice electrician and i must say i have seen some stuff where we had to remove and replace everything because how bad it was. like wires burned to literaly ashes
Oh man, unqualified (read "highly illegal"! lol) UK homegamer here & there's no way I'd want choccy blocks under the floor like that. Wow, not even a token wrap of tape to make things less sketch... And the no ceiling rose thing, maybe personal preference but what a pain to work on even if it did work from the get-go. What's happening with the conductors coming through the ceiling, any grommets to stop chafing, or strain relief on the top side?
That joint was Outrageous! was your client a little sheepish not wanting to own up to his DIY antics, no Electrician would undertake such a task, I worked with some characters back in the day, but seeing that it's pack the tools away time and return another day the whole place needs looking at in depth
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
I think Damion definitely did this himself 😂😂
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Let alone the rats nest of wiring, those flexes for the lights just hanging out of the ceiling look absolute shite! No strain relief at all!
You always gets the best jobs mate, how you so lucky? get the builders back to correct it 🙃😁
😂
The best jobs makes for the best videos.
Seriously, dodgy builders will come back and do another dodgy and then bugger off again. Wash and repeat
Oddly fascinating to watch someone at work who knows what they are doing. One of these days we will get a register of tradesman that actually means something and we can finally be rid of the Cowboy Builder problem.
Interesting to see electrical outside the US. What a mess for this house, but awesome walkthrough!
Glad you find the content interesting
journeyman electrician from Canada here thats considering a move to the UK and I got to say for some stuff UK is way above us for safety like Meggering all the lines and having fuses on alot of equipment but then you got other stuff like putting fixture wire through a ceiling to join in somewhere else that isnt really accessible.
The cable going into the ceiling void is not the norm. It’s actually damn right stupid.
Thanks for sharing your perspective
@@eastwayelectrical thanks for sharing your videos. Always a pleasure to learn how the sparkies operate across the pond
For recording RCD trip times is it not x1 faukt protection x 5 additional protection?
Great video, had a similar thing going on in the new house I bought. I removed all of the extra surface sockets and everything worked properly. Lights are still an issue but at least they work.
Very instructive Delroy . Thanks from USA.
Good vids, always good to see a good sparky get around, keep the videos up.
thanks Aus
Looks like a fire looking for a place to happen. Can't help but wonder if there are any more "junctions" like that in that house.
You got the patience for this madness 🤣
Very interesting to see how you problem solve step by step.and talk it through..
my old man would of given me a slap for that if i had done it as an apprentice well done delroy
My parents had a new house built. I inspected the caballing and it was worse than you have shown. Although the building inspectors passed it a safe, they never actually checked it because it was wired by a well known reputable builder.
R u an approved electrician??
@@adamsharp201 I was at the time (1988)
Mate....mate...you can’t have that 🤣🤣🤣 “An Electrician did it” “No way mate” blatantly did it himself!
Who knows what happened
Great vid, so glad to see your work and explanation. Hope Damien pays you well for sorting someone elses mess.
Thanks for the kind words
The householder has done that work himself.
As soon as he said he'd take up the carpet and flooring I knew the owner done it lol
Yep when he said "but delroy it just doesn't look nice" Should have run away from that, Well done for standing your ground.
Did you sort out his ring for continuity yet?
You wanted heated floors right? Good, cause this should catch fire at some point.
Great vid Del thanks sharing ...gotta say your voice has the same calming effect as David Attenborough mate haha
Glad you enjoyed the vid, I'm surprised ppl find my voice soothing
Love the hanging lamps ... so frigging nuts
Where's the light base? I'd love to punch a hole in the ceiling to see what is in the ceiling cavity. Endosope would do it.
Wow! I love that rats nest in the ceiling with the holes in the plaster... Ouch! Nice fault finding, a really great video... Thanks!
Thanks for watching Wilf
Wow that first shot of those wires is truly shocking⚡⚡.. And both upstairs and downstairs on same circuit???? And no earth continuity??? Truly astonishing and for nothing good
