Fantastic result Cam. The training is starting to show its effects, and I hope this gives you the hunger to get even better. You've been putting a lot of effort in and have come so far since you started rowing the single, the least you can do for yourself now is to keep going and smash even more records. Will be cheering you on every training session and race. Well done!
First - never change the format - the before, during and after thoughts and analysis are what makes your output engaging to rowers and probably non rowers but sports people in general. Yep, did wonder why you looked so chilled after the 2K compared to previous trials and sessions but to achieve that precision was great to see. As for the 5K row, you were definitely giving it full Yam and much more - again in comparison with previous it was the polar opposite to the ergo piece - bottom line you knew it was a good row compared with previous and what a result from hovering outside the top 10 before and now in 7th - big payoff especially knowing so close to climbing further (that’s before your break in the Cairngorms!). Pretty excellent year all round and great plan - with rowing at your level having, taking and excelling in the two formats in one season is remarkable 😎
This entire video is awesome, cam! 6:01 and "relatively easy" is an insane statement, and an awesome result from the water, congrats! I also really love the editing in this video, you kept me captive the whole time. As I've learned from my own experiences in this sport, it's not really a good race unless you're sick afterwards, so you got that one down!
Amazing. You look super solid in the single now compared to a few years back. Such a great advert for coastal as well, and how the two disciplines can coexist (maybe go as far as to say even benefit) each other
Congratulations on that big improvement! I liked hearing your analysis of how the 5k went, what made it better and what your challenges are. I am all for following your journey for this Olympiad; I wouldn't expect it to be the same as in past years. And it makes perfect sense to me that as a competitive rower you would take part in a competition against the best whether at HOCR or British Rowing Trials. Thanks for the comment about dealing with the hand that you dealt yourself. It's easy to fall into self blame before a race rather than calmly prepare.
Big congrats Cam, I met you at Head of the Charles last month and you were super kind in taking the time to talk to me about my race and getting a photo together. My crew won the Canadian University Rowing Championships in the Lightweight Men's 4+ (the same event we raced at Charles) a couple of weeks ago, and I'm super glad to see you have success at GB trials as well!
Well, quick calculation… single, double and quad makes seven, right? ;) So impressed by how you did so much by yourself. I’ve been following your training for years and even though I got sick and can’t row anymore, really love seeing how you keep working for it and it paying off!
That is one option! Unfortunately lots of hoops to jump through for that but that’s for future yamsquad to look forward to 😂 Been great to see the work paying off too!
Great result Cam you’ve made terrific progress over the last few years. It’s quite a frustrating sport, so much of it is technical in terms of tiny adjustments and such fine margins. It’s a great sport though and you’re a terrific ambassador for it. 👍
Great result. I was probably the last Buchan to race at trials in Boston before you (early 2000s) and got a thorough spanking great to see someone bring back some honour to the family name!
Great execution on the 2k erg! The same stroke from stroke #3 on, one only sees different people standing behind you when switchting to halfway and last 200m, the stroke stays exactly the same!
Been watching and enjoying your videos for quite some time Cam every single one of them are always interesting for all different reasons it’s great to be able to be with you on your journey on all what you do great effort by the way and really a positive result well done
HUGE congratulations Cam!!! Your improvement trajectory is incredible, I'm so happy for you that you got to see how you placed against such a good field and get that positive reinforcement going forward, knowing that the things you've been working on are translating and that your technical ceiling isn't reached yet has me giddy for you! Also, that face at the end of the race, what a great face of determination. Looked like you tapped into the anger and saw how much you wanted it, no "fake it till you make it" about it. That was the real deal. Loved the erg test strategy too, very smart. Stay hungry big man!
6min 2k UT2 should not be possible! Great work mate. Brings back memories that river from doing GB trials about 20 years back haha. Had some cold races on those straights 🤣😂
I'll be honest Cameron, the end of this video upset me a bit. It's great to hear that you appreciate the support, but not so enjoyable that without it you may have stopped moving forwards & continued your journey. In one form or another, we must push on (rate higher, split lower, or both!!! If you know, you know). I've just withdrawn my application to the BRIC on December 7th because I've fractured a rib & just can't apply the full yam or breathe really deep, the pain is just too much. So 11 months of training comes to nothing? Depends on your mindset. I'm really down about it, but there's nothing I can do. So I'll just add that 11 months to another 12 months & hopefully go next December. I'm 50. Don't stop moving forwards. Ever. It's just timing, as I have just painfully found out.
Sorry for upsetting you! It’s not necessarily that without the support of the Yamsqaud I would have stopped moving forward. More so the potential was high for a change in direction wherever that may have led! As I mention quite a lot it’s about enjoying the process! Sorry to hear about your rib! Definitely not a waste of 11 months. It’s a privilege to be able to put in effort at all!
I'm not crying about it 😂😂 but was concerned for your mindset. When things don't go well or as we plan the sky gets cloudy. I'm glad you are seeing it as a process. I have to see it that way too & my injury is a set back but not the end. I actually injured myself doing your 1 minute on 1 minute off routine 😂 set 3 something went crack! Thank you for your reply & keep doing what you do big man. Your journey helps my journey, after 16 years away from an erg I needed some serious inspiration!!! Keep yamming!!!!
Congratulations on the graft you've put in. That journey is ultimately what it's all about. You've had plenty of reasons to quit along this path but you've persisted and you're seeing the progress. As time passes it's an increasingly inspiring journey to follow whether that ends with great external success or not is totally secondary. Keep chipping away
Cam you’ve made cartoonish gains in speed on the water in the past two years, it’s actually bonkers insane. I wouldn’t have guessed you would be in spitting distance of medaling at gb trials in the single based on how you’ve done before. Super sick to watch your journey brother
Hey Cam... loving this!!! I've been here since the first ever video, and am the proud owner of one of the original, first ever AIO's! I don't compete anymore but still love your vlogs
Congratulations Cam on your best ever British trials 💪. It's just the first trial so there's still a chance of going even better in the next one? Excellent strategy compared to previous trials. Keep up the great work and vlogs.
Very nice video and result. Two thoughts: (1) have you had a muscle biopsy for fiber composition? You've alluded to being a fast twitch guy and that may be limiting to your performance in longer distances; (2) have you lost weight? That can improve your weight to power ratio, but don't lose too much. I don't think you have much fat to lose.
Thank you! I haven’t but is both pretty expensive and relatively pretty invasive. Probably would go for something less invasive and almost as accurate like using microwave sensors but still expensive and potentially less accurate. Either way the chances are high that it would confirm what I know already. Training seriously for over a decade I know my body quite well. I have lost weight the last 6 months or so and I don’t have much more to lose before I start hindering my performance, again, I know what weight I can sit at comfortably and still handle training without issue.
Hey Cam, love the video as always! Great approach on waiting a couple days to debrief. I was wondering, did you do any other sports before rowing? You seem to have an impressive amount of medals just behind you and I was wondering if that was all from rowing... either way, you're a beast for rowing a 6:01 and barely be winded... a 5'9 dude can only wish!
Hello! Thank you! Those medals are essentially from the last year or so to be honest! You get a medal for participating in most events these days. All the medals I’ve earned are in the channel! Used to play basketball prior to rowing though
24:30 Do you think investing (borrowing) an empower oarlock or impeller to fine-tune your power output to feel could help? You wouldn't need it all the time. But just as cyclists train to power in and outdoors, it could be beneficial, if you are struggling in gagging your efforts, especially in races on foreign waters.
I have used one and was horrible to use. Would be keen to test a peach system in the single though. Your idea is right though would probably help if it works!

Didn't you finish the test too calmly? Didn't you feel like you could have gotten more tired?
I mentioned in the video that I couldn’t went any harder, there is a reason why I wasn’t “more tired” at the end which I discussed in length
If you make the team, will you stay and race flat water?
Who knows, no point looking into what ifs when we have the present to enjoy 😊
