Phil is a true man. He word is his bond. I met him back as a kid in the early 90's. I was wearing the cowboy from hell/vulgar display of power shirt at a gas station in Florida. while paying for my drink I glanced back and it was phil and his I assume entourage. He saw the shirt and pulled me aside and singned it. I being so young and never met anyone famous much less one of my idols... I was going nuts. Phil asked for my address. he told me a signed hat and shirt would be on the way as we parted ways. About a month or two passed and I thought it would never happen. Sure enough it did. I got a package with a hat, cowboys from hell CD and a shirt... All signed. I still have everything to this day. Phil is a man of his word.

+Cetoke unfortunately not, but i will never find offence in that. what has happened on the other hand is not really comparreble with a drunk guy in a bar, singing of key. This man used some symbles of racism toward lots of people, who looked up to him.
His apology is nothing less then necessary. If he wants it or not, he sets a standard. And i don't think we, as a metal community, want to be associated with such a standard.

Now i dont really find it hateful when i hear a white man or woman say they have white pride because they should be proud of there white heritage. People if all colors should have pride of there heritage and culture. the only thing that really bugged me was the nazi salute. but like i said, people sometimes say and do stupid shit. as a biracial man who is seen more as a black man in the white community i live in. i accept his apology. Next time just drop the thumb, middle and ring finger when you salute the metal crowd lol.

poor phil. these comments are fucking terrible. i don't know about you guys, but i have done HORRIBLE things drunk and in the heat of the moment. I am glad that he apologized because what he said and did was offensive. I am white too and no one should be proud of something that they didn't choose or work for. To be proud of your skin color is idiotic. Not only that but the history of white pride is nothing to be ignorant to. Now, don't get me wrong, being proud of your culture or religion etc etc is different.
There is a reason he knows it's wrong and he is apologizing for his actions. I have been a pantera fan for such a long time and watching that video of him saluting and saying white power made me so fucking sad. This apology doesn't really mean shit, but it's better than nothing. If i didn't hear him say this, I would of thrown pantera cds out the fucking window. FUCK RACISM.
We are all born into this world with no choice of what we will look like. I think of it as the lottery of birth. Whether you are black/white rich/poor. No one in this world gets to choose. We just have to deal with what we were given. If you are given the upper hand, and you are a decent person, you will use your platform to help those around you who were not so lucky. Racism is alive and well in this country. FUCK IGNORANT MOTHERFUCKERS of all color, creed and class.
Humans will never be perfect, but if you aren't trying to help this planet get any better than go fuck yourself.
by the look of these comments, we are all fucked. I have no hope. but I still try.

I can't deny another chance to a man who asks for it with heart.
Still it's unforgettable the fact that Phil hasn't grown up yet, and therefore he hasn't understood that he gotta learn to control his emotions (which clearly have only led him into trouble), and to think before opening his mouth.
Is truly -any race- supremacy what mankind needs?

This whole thing is ridiculous. Anyone who's been paying attention for all these years knows that Phil Anselmo is no white supremacist. I've seen Phil Anselmo play with Hanukkah dreidels. Phil Anselmo has stated his favorite Jewish man is Rod Serling the creator of the Twilight Zone television series of which Phil Anselmo is a huge fan.
If any conclusion can be made from Phil Anselmo's behavior over the years he appears to be pro Jewish. This whole thing is sad, there is so much blatantly acceptable anti-Semitism in France and in the rest of Europe, and somehow people think Phil Anselmo is the problem. It would be so nice if people would get this upset when terrorists attack Israel. This is a joke, a bad joke. I am Phil Anselmo fan, and I plan to be one for the rest of my days.

This whole issue of white power versus black power would stop being a problem if people didn't refer to skin color, but rather, the country their ancestors came from. If you're white, say something like "British power" or "Polish power" or whatever. Similarly, if you're black, say something like "Sudanese power" or "Ethiopian power". Are you brown or yellow? Say something like "Puerto Rican power" or "Japanese power" or whatever. The point is, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, and if whites are forbidden to say "white power", then blacks, Latinos, native Indians, Orientals, etc., should not mention their skin color either as a form of self-empowerment. There should be no grey area in this matter. We as a society should be either all in or all out, no exceptions.

  • @christopherhoie6286
    @christopherhoie6286 8 років тому +1

I'll say one more thing about this. Just put yourselves in his shoes for a minute. If you were being part of an event or concert that was paying tribute to a band member who was once in your life for a pretty long time and now all of a sudden you're singing old songs you wrote together back in the day but without your band member/best friend? Wouldn't that make you wanna drink?? I know I'd want to. Yes it's not right to scream out white power BUT its not like he's ever randomly laid hands on a black person before and smacked them around or anything so in the end it's just words. If actual footage surfaces of him doing so then yeah I would definitely feel ashamed and embarrassed to continue to wear a Pantera shirt or play another song by them, sure...until then I will remain a fan and accept the fact that alcohol is the culprit here.

Hopefully our great and beloved metalcommunity will evolve over that.

I'm a black fan of pantera. It bothers me the fact I support them and buy their music and he thought it was acceptable to say. It's good he has apologised, but why be in a band and only respect one specific group of your fans? Idk it baffles me because if Justin Bieber said it everyone would go ape shit. But hey because he's a macho metal head its okay lol nahhh long live pantera even though phil can be a fool at times I will never stop loving them and their music.

Shouldnt be ashamed of being proud to be white. While its still a sensitive subject and understandable some people dont want to hear the words white power, he should be entitled like any black artist to say black power, and black pride.

if he was charged with insighting race hate, i think most courts would throw it out on the grounds that the majority of people would not take him seriously. The same goes for lyrics in metal songs about murder violence etc.
If Phil was a politician or a known KKK member it would be different.
If he does it again, then we cant listen to anymore apologies and maybe do take him seriously about racism.

Seemed genuine. Other than that, he may have had to apologize because of his record contract requirements or because he didn't want to loose a shit ton of fans? I think it was genuine. Chalk it up to a "Had to apologize" moment. We all go through it... "ruck it up..."

I don't know, and, as a matter of fact, I don't even care if this is bullshit or not, but simply the intent of appologizing in front of everybody for the "hail!" takes courage and responsability, 2 things that I'm not quite sure some of those bashing on Phil do have. We all get drunk and do stupid, racist shit, but if somebody gets offended and doesn't accept an appology, no matter who from, then you're no different from the one that offended you VERBALLY. So cut the guy some slack and be fucking tollerant.

+LTD white power is neo Nazi thing and it means more than liking your skin colour, when black people got civil rights then fine they had a lot to celebrate but that's history they don't need to mention it cause most white people respect other races and black people now in 21st century haven't had any issues there just born that colour, but if white man hurts a black man sort him and if a black man hurts a white man sort him the same way, where all equal now.

For what it's worth, during his live cover of "Day of suffering" with Morbid Angel, Phil, a longtime-fan, bows in respect and awe at Sandoval's drumming. Sandoval is latino, of mixed european(spanish) and native south american descent. I'm not defending Phil, stupid is as stupid does and all that, but I hardly think he believes in this shit.

We all make mistakes, and we all make bad choices. If anyone is bashing on him even after the apology well then they have standards set way too high for behavior. And they need to realize that everyone including them makes mistakes. People are acting like he killed someone and brought the body on stage.

Dumbass thing to say and do, but he admits it. I've followed Phil and Pantera, Down, and Superjoint for several years. I'm 30, so plenty have been fans longer than I have, but I went to Dime's memorial service in Arlington, Texas after he was killed back in 2004. All I can say is, I don't think any of those guys are racist. They were always so inclusive to anyone who just wanted to listen to some badass metal and have a good time with friends. It didn't matter what you looked like or where you came from, the only way your ass was getting kicked out was if you got in the way of others enjoying themselves. Pantera fostered this attitude among the fans: All are welcome. Dime really emanated that attitude, but all the band members were in agreement, Phil included. As a fan, if a kid comes to a metal show for the first time, I don't care if he or she is black, white, Asian, Hispanic, whatever. If he/she is there to have fun and enjoy the show, they're welcome. I don't want anyone feeling alienated by comments like that, and I believe Phil when he says he doesn't either. Just maybe don't drink so much at shows, Phil...
