This was an amazing final. Most tennis fans of the 2010s don’t even realize that the Masters Madrid was played on indoor harcourt for the first 7 years of its existence...much less that Rafa won it (his SECOND Masters title on Hardcourt that year...as he won the Masters Canada in July by beating Agassi in the Finals. He also reached the Miami Finals, losing to Fed in a great 5-set Final). The point is, Rafa has been playing great on and WINNING big Hardcourt tournaments since 2005. He could ALWAYS play on Hardcourts
Nadal is a hard court master! He won the 2022 Australian Open, which I think was his greatest final and moment ever!!! He is fourth all-time in hard court Grand Slam trophies at 6. Only Djokovic/Federer (both have 12 hard court GS titles) and Sampras (7 hard court GS) have more than Rafa!!!

Rafa never ceases to amaze me! Almost 19, he was tough-as-nails as he is today. I had forgotten Madrid was on hard courts. And the best of five sets! Two-thousand five was the start of a beautiful journey for the man from Mallorca 🏆.

Dude had foot troubles and yet he was jumping and running. No wonder he's admired around the world.
This match destroyed his foot. He pretty much broke his foot in this match and was out for the next 4-5 months. His doctors discovered he had the birth defect on his foot and he might have to retire soon. He refused to retire and said he will play through the pain and wore an extra-large and extra-padded shoe that NIKE custom-made for him and the rest is history.

Rafa was a fearsome monster in 2005.
People talk about his French Open win and other early losses, but know little about his play in the Masters Series and other tournaments.
He won the Masters four times and finished runner-up in a close match with Roger.
He also won many titles and if I remember correctly, he would have had over 8,000 points, which is what he has now.
Almost the same points as Alcaraz now.
And the winning percentage was 89%. One more win and it would have been 90%.
Nadal was 19 here. People don't realize how beastly Nadal really was before the first major injury in 2012. Even in 2005 he had foot problem which was supposed to retire him already, but 2012 was just career deciding moment. Luckily he came back.
In any other era, he would be retired after that. Mother cell treatment, among others, saved him.

Nadal has been mentally strong throughout his career regardless of age. Djokovic developed this strength with age and experience. Overall, Nadal is the strongest in this department.

He has the ability to suddendly play more aggressive, sometimes deeper and just bring the intensity. But his overall point dynamic doesnt change at all.

Federer tore some ligaments in his ankle during the 2005 indoor season. He only played tournaments in Thailand and Shanghai(ATP finals), while he withdrew from Madrid, Paris, and Basel.

I think Ljubicic would have developed into a Davydenko-style spoiler for Rafa on hard courts if he had been able to beat him here in Madrid in 2005. But after Nadal beat him here Ivan was never the same.

The behavior of the Spanish crowd from the third set onwards was really reprehensible, the worst crowd I have ever seen, they reached a tremendous level of aggressiveness, even Nadal was forced to reject one or another attitude, albeit slightly - hence Ljubicic's attitude at the end.

Nadal wasn’t at his prime yet. He still wasn’t good on hard courts and progressively was getting better on grass, although he had no business making the final of Wimbledon in 2006. And Djokovic won his first slam in 2008 but didn’t truly break out as a threat till the 2nd half of 2010. He said after his French Open loss in 2010 he thought about retiring because he just couldn’t beat Nadal or Federer. But then he worked harder and changed his mindset and by the 2nd half of 2010 he was playing incredible. And we all know about 2011.

Thomas brunkle I don’t really support “weak era”, because there were still many good players then, but it’s undeniable there was no all time great to really challenge Federer the way there was from 2008-on (when Nadal broke out) and especially 2011-on (Djokovic and Murray broke out). It’s not his fault; he did what he was supposed to and crushed the opponents in front of him, and did a damn good job of it.

So Federer has dealt with all time greats outside his own prime which makes it all the more impressive.
Thomas brunkle Federer actually only holds a 14-11 lead over Murray, and Murray held the lead for a while before Federer came back. Wawrinka matches up much better with Djokovic than Federer or Nadal because Djokovic lacks the variety of the other two so Wawrinka has a field day crushing Djokovic’s rally balls. What Federer has done against Djokovic is impressive; he tends to bring his best against him and they’ve had great matches. Federer has adapted to the other big 3 better with age though.

Djoko's winning percentage in GS Finals (17/26=65,4%) is very close to Nadal's (19/27) and better than Federer's (20/31=64,5%). Also what dou mean with "random matches" ?? All of the Big3 guys had ups and downs in their career when they lost Slam matches in early rounds (Federer 2013, Djoko 2017, Rafa 2015/16)

Probably. Most Masters' finals were bo5 until 2007. Rome 2005 and 2006 are among the most famous 5 setters.
