- More than five years after playing guitar with the Foo Fighters on stage as 'KISS Guy,' Yayo Sanchez vividly recalled the night the he went viral after Dave Grohl agreed for him to play "Monkey Wrench."
The April 2018 concert was the last time the Foo Fighters played in Austin, but the band is returning soon with shows at ACL Fest on Oct. 7 and 14.
This dude is so insanely humble and an insane talent just way to go Yayo Sanchez ... I'm a fan!!
Make that another fan! 😊
He had the pick of Destiny!!!! I always go to this Kiss Guy video for a smile!!! Way to rock it Yayo!
gotta make a video game called "The Pick Of Destiny". We all then get to be Yayo for just a bit.
"Can I borrow your phone I want to call my mom"
Priceless
Dave Grohl could put you in the band permanently. You added youth to the band. Foo Fighters got even better with its performance. Kiss Guy, you rock!!!!!
Yo Kiss Guy!
I was there! You really stepped up to the plate and rocked it!
What a killer show!
Glad you got that experience and sounds well deserved to a cool, humble dude! Keep on Rocking! 👍🏼🤟🏼🎸
Years and years ago I was lucky enough to play with Bob Weir from The Grateful Dead, met him before a show in Marin with a buddy, he asked if I played and then said "well let's go then" and we walked on stage. Crowd was small, it was a small venue but for me to be able to play with an icon like Weir was the highlight of my life as far as music goes. No one filmed it, only a couple of my buddies witnessed it, but I have it in my mind forever.
Epic
Epic. Confirmed.
That viral video is one of my all time favorites. Anytime I need to smile, it's definitely my go-to. Awesome job Yayo, you nailed it! And as a mom myself, I love that you immediately wanted to call your mom to share your excitement in the moment. ❤
Genuinely unreal performance and I loved the chemistry YoYo instantly had with Taylor
That last guitar bit at the end, when he sets it up and it's like, "Over to you, Taylor..." and Taylor responds with the drum fill... that was uncanny! Perfect ending! 🤘
Dunno if you'll see this, but, Yayo, be as weird as you want to be you're doing it well. I still like going and watching that performance when i feel like crap. Your joy up there on stage always brings a smile to my face, without fail.
That interview brought a tear to my eye. Magic. Just magic.
The only Foo Fighters song that I ever listen to or watch on youtube is Yayo's version of Monkey Wrench. Just magical.
I’ve wondered what Yayo has been up to! Glad to see him and hear what happened from his perspective! I watched that moment like millions of other FF fans. It was epic! Kiss Guy should have been invited to play at the “last” Kiss concert too!
Bro. You owned that stage like it was all yours! I don't play, but my first thought was how hard it must've been to just pick up and play someone else's guitar like that, especially with Dave's low strap, but you looked totally natural!
i used to play and ur right man. he clearly is a performer. i saw it wen he pulled the pick from his pocket....lol....thats a dude prepared and all my truly great guitarist friends always had a pick. lol. it was a great moment sorry i get carried away. peace
To date, you're still the killinest player they've had on stage, you nailed it Yayo 👍👍
Hey man, I love the vid of you with the FF.
I watched it many times and it makes me always happy.
The way you took over the show, amazing!!!
The energy, the way you assimilate with the band, I don’t think that I will see this again.
As I saw in an comment, “ nice that you let the FF play in your show” nailed it.
You have talent and let us hear more off you!!!!
Love you yayo❤
Yeah, he rocked that shit, lol!!!
"if god wants us to rock, then we'll rock" what a fucking legend
His guitar solo was on a professional level ... he ripped it ..
The night this happened I was working in Midland, TX. in the oil fields. One of our fuel guys came walking into our building and said, “One of my friends was just on stage with Foo Fighters.” Quite cool.
Man Yayo, what a great opportunity! And dude, you swam with the big fish like it was your own school!! I've been playing almost 60 years and I'm in awe of you!!! I definitely would have choked with that strap being that long!!! You rock, brother!
Frickin awesome! I go back occasionally to rewatch you play!
I remember seeing the video in 2018 before it went viral. I was so happy for this dude and I remember thinking “this guy basically just won American Idol in 10 minutes by playing 1 song”.
Waited for years to finally see the Foos, that entire show was mind blowing, Kiss Face was the highlight of the night!! Mindblowing show!!!
Dude, you are awesome! Really enjoyed this and your down to earth take on this. Really a great musical talent!
Just watched the video again of KISS guy and man he was shredding it! Dave is soo cool to even invite anyone up to play! What a dream come true! Hope to see this guy comeout with an original band ! Way to go Yayo!
I was in a mostly original alt/rock band back in the 90's and I had a connection with Sony and we still didn't make it. It's hard even with a connection. He's living his dream like I once did...Rock On Forever Kiss Guy.
Legendary story and opportunity my dude - great to hear it from your perspective - I totally get the slow motion effect in real life and I also get the time flying by while you're actually playing - when my band was gigging, we would start the show and before I knew what happened it was done - everyone telling us what a great show it was and high fives all around all while coming down off of a massive adrenaline dump - I can only imagine it was that time 50,000 for you. Has anyone said to you that you like a young Tom Araya from Slayer - if not - you do! Horns up! \m/
Every once in a while I go watch the Kiss Guy video and rock out a little.
Thanks Kiss guy, Gracias Yayo Sanchez.
Greetings from a Brazilian in Venezuela
Great story!
Edit: I just watched the "foo fighters kiss guy" video again and its at almost 10 million views!
Yeah, and the video posted by John Scurek. "KISS Guy (YAYO Sanches) plays Monkeywrench w/Foo Fighters" is ALMOST at 14 MILLION VIEWS.
...gotta love it! Dave & Yayo nailed it. Would be epic for a repeat at October 2023 ACL...
Thanks Austin American Statesman.
that was awesome dude!
Dude! Hell yea! KISS guy! You rock man! Thanks for sharing your side of the story! You fucking NAILED IT bro! (coming from a fellow guitarist!)
Dude, you killed this. Absolutely KILLED this🫡🫡🫡🫡🎖️🤘🏾🤘🏾I’m glad you got to capitalize career-wise off this…!
Yayo, you rock. This old man loves watching your video playing with Foo Fighters. Keep Rockin'!!!
Watched that video soo many times, it was just such a special, joyful, magical thing. Interesting to hear you describe the feelings you went through up there, and surprising cause I always thought like- how the hell can this guy just get up there with that kind of confidence and totally kick ass!? I Would have frozen completely and sucked, but glad you grabbed that chance, great stage presence too for real.
My favorite moment is when you cause Dave's tongue-tie moment right after your first short solo before the verse 😂 he did not see that nastyness coming haha Great.
Totally enjoyed it, you were amazing 👍🏻
I often go and watch the kiss guy video because it puts a huge smile on my face. Nice one Yayo!
KISS Guy proved he could play that night. It’s tough to impress Dave Grohl, but you really pulled it off. Congrats on all your future success in music, Yayo. Just a great story all around…
Goosebumps watching this - what a fucking rad moment! Stoked that happened to you man - you killed it!
You Are Very Humble Yayo! You Are An Incredible Guitar Player!! I Love Your Video With The Foo Fighters!! Awesome Job!! Keep Jamming!! All The Best To You!
If you live to be 100 - you will never forget this song, or feeling. You totally rocked!!!
This is such a cool story. I watch that video every so often. My favorite part is when Dave loses it, laughs and forgets the words to his own song. EPIC!!!
Yayo, I laughed my ass off when Dave threw up his arms. What an awesome memory . You got to do something the rest of us only dream of...and you killed it. Great job man. \m/
Love Dave and the Kiss guy, Met Kiss guy at a Joe Satriani concert in Austin 2022, he's a sweetheart. I grew up in the DMV as Dave Grohl did. Never met him or been to one of his concerts but he's a genuine good person.
I watch the "Kiss Guy" vid almost every week. Love to see Dave Grohl get blown away.
Yayo Sanchez, you're really good.
You were so good mate! Hope you become massively successful yourself!
Dave is the most AWESOME Rockstar out there in my opinion.
When he invited you up and you shredded like you did and was super on point!
That was definitely a lightning in a bottle sir.
Love your spirit, You have taught us all - wannabe's - a great lesson. Great. And thank you for sharing the story.
Yayo, I absolutely loved your blues licks. You killed it, well done.
Think about walking into a coffee shop in Northern California 1969 as a 11 yo boy just learning blues harmonica and hearing Taj Mahal in the back playing and getting to sit in on a couple of tunes when he saw me accompanying him on my harp. Was surreal in the moment. Also got to play with lou gottlieb in a studio at wheelers ranch ( hippie commune) around the same timeframe.
the legend hey man I love this, really enjoyed part were you talk how you kinda "black out" during performance and basicly your natrual instinct took over, you killed it, hop to see you at a show one day , I'd lose my shit cheering for ya 🤪
I don’t even follow Foo fighters music but I watched this video 4 times .. what a surreal moment for you
You have an amazing stage presence.. absolute fire 🔥
How can you not listen to and love the 🤕Foo’s? Best band with the coolest frontman ever!
@chuckrobinson3493
They just weren’t on my radar
I’ll probably check them out after this
Yayo, that was awesome, and your story put a smile on my face.
What a beautiful soul and u deserved everything good , I’m good thru a rough patch in life , just got released from prison and u made ths girl so happy , I don’t how many times I’ve watched it , ur a fkn legend and peace n love from Australia
So insperational. Good for u yayo. Watch it to bring me a smile all the time. Much love from oregon bro !!!
good on ya man.. you lived the dream so many of us have to play with our favourite band!! rock on!!!
Such a cool story, I just saw the performance today.
I grew up playing country and blues until at 14 I discovered ACDC and music was never the same. I love Dave for the human aspects of things, he knows "EXACTLY" what's it's like to feel that surge of awesomeness , and for him to allow someone to come up and play is just one of the most kindest things any human could do for another so with that, I love ya Dave your seriously my kind of guy.
I've had this same desire as Kiss Guy and even though I'm 56 today ( Still feel 25 lol ) and have made music my whole life since the age of 10 when I got my first guitar, I have "NEVER" been to a concert and I don't know why. The best reason I can think of is just because I wanted to be the singer so bad , I would just feel terrible , jealous, and full of envy to not be on stage performing. I've done a lot of stuff for an audience and my style is James Taylor, JOHN PRINE for sure, Jim Croce and a whole list of country guys from the 80's and 90's. I still dream of one day being known because my whole I've been told by family, friends, and most certainly audiences that I should be in the public eye singing and playing so we'll see I've still got a lot of time and we never know when a dream will come true so I'll keep on dreaming.
Anyways RIGHT ON DAVE for allowing Yayo to live the dream even if it was only for a minutes , you're a very special stand up guy
Cheers from Merritt B.C. ( The country music capital of Canada ) Jan 13/24
Dude I loved hearing about your experience
I get how you described the moment
You’re lucky guy
You're so talented. I'd buy your music anyday
Man I get emotional watching you play. I'm so happy this happened.
You entered the scene, grabbed your nerves and you did a great performance. Dave kneeled before you with all rights.
An excellent performance and great stage presence. He was epic!
i just watched Dave talking about how when he was young being invited on stage by his favourite band would've been a dream come true, its super wholesome to see Kissguy explaining it to be exactly that!
edit: would love to see them jamming for a session
Watch FFkiss video many times and still enjoy it every time 👏👏🤘
Congratulations man. Great story! Keep up the great work.
Yayo is such a humble guy, and was PERFECT! Are there links to his music / band?
I loved every minute for you ! I’ve watched it several times. Cool to hear you talk about it.
You knocked it out of the park !
My first KISS album was Dressed To Kill. I had never heard of them but those 4 freaks standing there in suits forced me to buy the cassette. Saw them in Seattle in 1976. Saw your UA-cam performance and thought the whole thing was the bomb. Dave “IS” very cool indeed. I’m really glad I saw your post and heard your story especially after seeing Dave’s recap of that night. Hope someday I see you playing your own thing on UA-cam to bring it full circle. Good luck from another KISS guy
How was Seattle 1976?
Killer
Wow so humble and full of humility after that amazing event in his life!
This is the personification of seizing your moment!! Excellent job Yayo!!
You were amazing...keep doing what you're doing!! Follow your dream. Dave is awesome and a down to earth guy, love him and the Foo!!
You were awesome mate
EPIC!!! Kudos for being ready when the moment arrived.
YOU DID SO GOOD!! 🤩
Incredible!
What an epic moment for you!!
Rock on Kiss Guy!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
I loved watching this happen and I loved listening to him tell us how it all unfolded. I’m a guitar player too and what an amazing thing to happen. How it was all in slow motion and the adrenaline pumping feeling like you’re having an out of body experience then back to reality of WTF just happened ❤ I love that he just wanted to call his Mum ❤️ if you’re reading this comment Kiss Guy, thank you for sharing this story for us. This is my dream and it’s awesome hearing you talk about it. Amazing.
Hell ya Yayo! That was epic! Best of luck in the future. We're all rooting for you! 🙏
As you say - it was an absolutely magical moment. Absolutely incredible performance.
Maybe you should make a new band with Shane Hawkins and Violet Grohl.
Bro. You f!ing owned it with Dave.
As a career side man on the side, I’m so proud of you.
You fucking owned it!!
dude im old. lol. but u were awesome. not just the playing but the way u played up the audience, ur own pick....lmfaooo.....of course!! u play? wy wouldn't u? It has honestly been one of my most replayed and smiley musical moments of past few yrs. cant believe its 5 but i caught it late. this means nothing but i performed heaps and finding ur own voice..meaning..being u, is really hard bc we mimic our heroes. u r a rockstar. peace man
Yayo! As everyone has said you totally ROCKED IT! Well done sir! Keep up the great work sir!
You killed it man. I watch that video often.

What i really chill guy!!! Got to live his dream. i know the feeling i had a cup of coffee playing on team USA. When i stepped on the rink for the first time my legs wouidnt listen to my brain. i couldn't move forthe first ten seconds. I can only imagine how he felt at that time . totally rose to the occasion !!!!. YOU ROCKED KID
So amazing he got to do this. He will have this memory for the rest of his life lol. Man good for this guy.
I’d love to see a ‘best of audience members’ Foo Fighters supergroup. They could tour!
You rock man you got that moment in life and kick it ass 😀👍
You did good love from Denmark 🤘
I suspect you'll play with them again someday 👍
Were all so happy for you...sometimes we get lucky, & sometimes we create our own luck...BRAVO...SRO
Damn, even if I could play if that had happened to me I think I would have froze! You absolutely smashed it!
Good for you man! I wish you the best!
Man for a moment you were roding with the Gods .
Salute
He's going to remember That night for the rest of his life
Awesome humble heartfelt speech
You crushed it!
He loves his mom. Good upbringing shows with this young man. Keep rocking.
NICE JOB DUDE!!!
My go to video when I need cheering up. Amazing in all the ways, but the way Yayo just fit in, especially with Taylor, was lightning in a bottle.
